Kevin Costner Helped Launch A Near-Billion-Dollar Hollywood Movie Trend
Image
Nicholas Sparks writes the kind of books you're likely to find on your mom's nightstand. His romances have captivated (mostly women) readers around the world for nearly 30 years, with over 130 million copies sold according to his website. Many of his novels follow the same formula, but clearly, he's found a winning one: stories of star-crossed lovers, often set in picturesque coastal American small towns, where a profound and enduring bond is tested by a tragic twist. Few authors can claim that all of their books have reached #1 on the New York Times Best Sellers list.

Nicholas Sparks' stories didn't make the leap to the silver screen until 1999 with the adaptation of his second novel, "Message in a Bottle." Star Kevin Costner fits perfectly into Sparks' universe, portraying the all-American, rugged man — stoic and guarded, yet warm. We've seen Kevin Costner play similar roles in some of his best movies, including...

Who Plays Raegan And Maddie Lockwood In Netflix's You Season 5
Image
The twin trope is a time-honored soap opera staple, so it's not surprising that, in the final season of "You" — the campy, heightened Netflix series that stars Penn Badgley as "nice guy" serial killer Joe Goldberg — Anna Camp plays a pair of identical twins. As both Raegan and Maddie Lockwood, half-sisters of Joe's extraordinarily wealthy and powerful wife Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie), Camp turns in a masterful dual performance, especially because the two women couldn't be more different. Raegan, a cutthroat employee and board member of Lockwood Industries who's furious that her late father Tom (played last season by Greg Kinnear) made Kate the CEO of the company, will stop at nothing to undermine her half-sister and barely has time for her husband and daughter. Maddie, a socialite whose job Joe describes as "vaguely PR" who's been married several times and calls Joe "Boo-Boo" in a way that's not not flirtatious,...

You: Every Season Of Penn Badgley's Netflix Series Ranked
Image
Major spoilers for all 5 seasons of "You" follow.

After five seasons, the lurid, pulpy, sexy, trashy, and, yes, enjoyable Netflix thriller series "You" comes to an end. Based (partially) on the books by Caroline Kepnes, "You" began its life on Lifetime before making the jump to Netflix, where fans just couldn't get enough of Joe Goldberg, a very handsome, very literate man who also happens to be a serial killer. The twist is that Joe doesn't see himself that way. In Joe's eyes, he's the star of his own ongoing rom-com, and his inevitable victims are chances at true love. He's the type of person that describes themselves as a "nice guy" when they're anything but.

For all its flaws, "You" does an excellent job of showcasing the way people can be lured into a sense of comfort by manipulative, abusive sociopaths, especially if they're handsome white guys with a winning smile.

Here's How Many People You's Joe Goldberg Has Killed
Image
This article contains discussions of child abuse and suicide.

Stop reading this right now if you haven't finished all of "You" — spoilers are coming!

The fifth and final season of "You," the Netflix series that lets noted Taylor Swift fan Penn Badgley play a serial killer convinced he's actually some sort of white knight, is finally out ... which means we can finally assess Joe Goldberg's (Badgley) body count. No, I don't mean how many people Joe has dated throughout the series; I'm talking about how many people he's killed.

In case you've forgotten exactly what went down in the show's first four seasons, here's the overview. Joe Goldberg, who presents himself as a hopeless romantic but actually seems to love murder much more than he loves love, had a very difficult childhood; his biological father abused both him and his mother, and ultimately, a young Joe shoots and kills him.

First off, Shay Rudolph of The Baby-Sitters Club will be playing the main character, who is no longer a boy named Stanley but a girl named Hayley.Deadline has the details on her: she will be "full of heart and tired of her family’s belief that fate is fixed; her arrival will inject new hope and optimism into her campmates."

Greg Kinnear will play The Warden, a gender-flipped version of the sinister character played by Sigourney Weaver in the original movie. He has what seems like a good reason for having delinquent girls come out to Camp Yucca (Camp Green Lake in the original) to dig holes, but he has a dark secret. Aidy Bryant will play Sissy,...

The Underrated Ben Stiller Sci-Fi Flop That Should Have Spawned A Franchise
Image
After more than 25 years, it truly feels like one of Ben Stiller's best films, "Mystery Men," could have been the band of underdogs that surpassed even the likes of "The Suicide Squad" or "Guardians of the Galaxy." Riffing on comic book superheroes before "Deadpool" made it cool, "Mystery Men" is adapted from a team of misfit heroes that debuted in "Flaming Carrot" #16 and showcases an array of comedic talent. These low-level and incredibly odd crimefighters consist of Mr. Furious (Ben Stiller), The Shoveller (William H. Macy), fork-throwing Blue Raja (Hank Azaria), the superhuman fart factory The Spleen (Paul Reubens), Invisible Boy, who can only disappear when no one is looking (Kel Mitchell), and The Bowler (Janeane Garofalo), whose weapon of choice is a bowling ball containing the skull of her late father.

Fighting the good fight for laughs, the film received a mixed reception both critically and financially, having...

'Never Say Never': Laurence Fishburne Says a Matrix Remake Isn't Out of the Question (But Would He Return as Morpheus?)
Image
The Matrix is easily one of the most beloved and iconic sci-fi franchises of all time. The first three films of the cyberpunk franchise have continued to be a hit even over two decades since its release, and its latest addition came in 2021 with The Matrix Resurrections.

Although not all the installments of the franchise were as successful as the first film, which won four Academy Awards and became a pop culture symbol, including the red pill and blue pill conversation and its filmmaking style, the franchise continues to be a huge hit. The story will continue with The Matrix 5, although it will take a new direction. Speaking with Cbr's Grae Drake when promoting his newest action spy film The Amateur, Laurence Fishburne also weighed in on a possible The Matrix remake.

As Drake pointed out that a remake of The Matrix "would be wild," Fishburne replied, "You know what,...

Ben Stiller’s Superhero Comedy 'Mystery Men' Is Streaming for Free
Image
The superhero has now taken over cinema thanks to the likes of the MCU and the SnyderVerse but, believe it or not, there was a time when this wasn’t the case. While superhero movies were more of a rarity, a unique send-up of the genre did emerge way, way back in 1999. And it was well ahead of its time...as the divisive response proves. Starring an all-star cast that includes Ben Stiller and William H. Macy, Mystery Men is now headed to free streaming. And, perhaps in this golden age of superhero movies, the comedy can finally get the recognition it deserves.

Directed by Kinka Usher in his feature-length directorial debut, and written by Neil Cuthbert, Mystery Men is loosely based on the "Flaming Carrot Comics" by Bob Burden. Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, William H. Macy, Greg Kinnear, Claire Forlani, Kel Mitchell, Paul Reubens,...

Burt Reynolds’ Heartbreaking 'Boogie NIghts' Oscar Loss Changed His Career
Image
Burt Reynolds achieved feature-film stardom and a large measure of credibility with his powerful dramatic performance in the 1972 thriller film Deliverance. Reynolds’ charm and sex appeal were effectively showcased throughout the rest of the decade in films like Hooper, The Longest Yard, Smokey and the Bandit, and Starting Over, which pleased audiences and critics alike while establishing Reynolds as an immensely likable star who was equally adept at action and comedy.

However, in the early 1980s, the good-old-boy image that led Reynolds to be voted Hollywood’s top box-office draw for a record five consecutive years between 1978 and 1982 reached a point of diminishing returns. His unsuccessful pairing with Clint Eastwood in the 1984 action film City Heat marked a precipice in his career from which he never regained his former star power. In the late 1980s, Reynolds made an ignominious return to television, where his career began in the early 1960s.

11 Best Shows Like ‘The Twilight Zone’ To Watch If You Love the Series
Image

The Twilight Zone is one of the most brilliant and trippy series ever made. Created by Rod Serling, the CBS series is a virtual and psychologically thrilling trip into the unknown. The Twilight Zone premiered over six decades ago, and it still holds up very well as far as the stories and the visual experience go. Maybe that’s why the Jordan Peele reboot failed: it couldn’t capture the same magic as the Serling series did. So, if you loved the trippy stories, inventive settings, and compelling characters in The Twilight Zone, here are some similar shows you should check out next.

Ben Stiller's Underrated 26-Year-Old Superhero Comedy Gets Free Streaming Home
Image
Emmy-winner Ben Stiller is currently riding the wave of the recent success of Apple TV+’s Severance, on which he serves as an executive producer, but in 1999 he starred in the star-studded and underrated superhero action-comedy movie Mystery Men. The movie, which also stars William H. Macey, Hank Azaria, and Greg Kinnear, will stream for free on Tubi starting April 1.

Set in the fictional Champion City, Captain Amazing (Kinnear) is captured by the villainous Casanova Frankenstein, played by Oscar-winner Geoffrey Rush, which gives the perfect opportunity for a group of wannabe misfit superheroes to prove themselves. Upon its release in 1999, Mystery Men was a box office flop and did not turn a profit, earning just $33.4 million against a budget of $68 million.

Stiller is “Furious” in Mystery Men

Stiller stars as Mr. Furious, a junkyard worker with a bad temper, who, with his friends Eddie and Jeffrey, decide to become superheroes.

Image
Stephen King is one of the most prolific and influential authors of all time, and the authority on the horror and sci-fi genre. His books have been adapted into countless films and television projects, some of them even more than once.

Many iconic filmmakers have attempted to adapt King's works, and some of them were successful, like frequent collaborator Mike Flanagan, and others were not on King's favorite list due to the many changes to their material. One horror veteran auteur who hasn't attempted to adapt one of King's works is James Wan, famous for works like Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring. In a new appearance on The Kingcast, Wan revealed that the "only" novel for him to adapt is one of King's most ambitious works: The Stand.

Quick LinksWhat is The Bad News Bears (1976) About? What Went Wrong With Bad News Bears (2005)?Bad News Bears Was a Critical and Financial Failure

The most common complaint that movie fans direct towards Hollywood is that remakes, reboots, and sequels are far too dominant, and the stats reflect this. 17 of the top 20 highest-grossing films of 2024 were not the first films in their series, with the only exceptions being It Ends With Us, The Wild Robot, and Wicked. While this is a harrowing trend that could bode poorly for Hollywood going forward, the continuous overflow of sequels isn't as bad as some fans may have you believe. Audiences absolutely loved legacy sequels like Gladiator II and Alien: Romulus; children and grown-ups alike flocked to the theater to see Inside Out 2 and Moana 2, and Dune: Part Two is currently nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The pure idea...

Was Glen Powell Already A Screen Sensation Before The Dark Knight Rises & Top Gun Roles? Here’s What We Think
Image
All About Glen Powell’s Big Breaks Before The Dark Knight Rises & Top Gun Roles ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Before Glen Powell looted hearts as a smooth-talking pilot in Top Gun: Maverick or showed up in Gotham in The Dark Knight Rises, he was hustling in Hollywood—but not how you’d predict! Sure, now he’s all about big blockbusters, but his rise to fame was less “instant superstar” and more “slow burn with unexpected pit stops.”

He kicked things off with some blink-and-you’ll-miss-it gigs you probably forgot (or never noticed). But hey, every big star starts somewhere! Those early roles were just stepping stones toward becoming a Hollywood heavy-hitter for Powell. The Twisters star didn’t just waltz into Hollywood as the leading man—he put in the work. From tiny roles in family films to popping up in indie projects, he was grinding, slowly making a name for himself.

10 Best Movies Set In Georgia, Ranked
Image
The great state of Georgia has been home to an impressive number of film productions, including a number of Marvel Studios movies, but only a very small percentage of those are actually set in Georgia. Instead, the Atlanta streets frequently play the role of New York or Washington D.C., and its wild spaces can be used to represent just about anywhere.

But what about those movies that actually take place in the beautiful, complicated Peach State? Films as diverse and wonderful as "Magic Mike Xxl" and "Days of Thunder" all have great stretches set in Georgia, but some films go even further and really represent a little slice of the state with most of their runtime. Whether it's Clint Eastwood's genteel Savannah true crime murder mystery "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," having an aca-awesome time with college acapella performers in Atlanta in "Pitch Perfect," or...
