Aaron Eckhart has signed on to star in The Old Man in the Dunes, an “inspirational thriller” from Angel Studios, the faith-based distributor behind Sound of Freedom and The King of Kings.

The feature, based on an award-winning short, traces the story of an enigmatic old man living in the dunes who is unjustly accused of killing a local. His only hope is a steadfast public defender determined to unearth the truth. According to a summary of the plot, the story “delves deep into the human soul, underscoring the consequences of concealing the truth and the redemption that can be found in repentance.”

Christian Guiton wrote The Old Man in the Dunes and will direct the film as his feature debut. Noli Molla and Mark Holder are producing for Wonder Street, alongside Jacques Abrahamian. The film is set to begin shooting in the third quarter of this year for a planned 2026 release.

It is behind The Accountant 2 on the list and has raked in an impressive percentage of revenue against its modest budget of less than $25 million. Exclusive: The Andrea Iervolino Company has launched commercial film label Aventura and unveiled it as a partner on upcoming action thriller Deep Water.

Directed by Renny Harlin, the previously announced production stars Aaron Eckhart, Ben Kingsley, and Nashi, seen recently in Chinese blockbuster Creation of the Gods 2 which grossed $385 millions worldwide.

Watch out Knives Out 3! Another Netflix murder mystery film, The Thursday Murder Club, is in the works from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and Netflix, based on a book by BBC game show host and British TV presenter Richard Osman.

The modestly budgeted animated film The King of Kings has quietly been conquering the box office since its debut ahead of Easter. In under two weeks of release, The King of Kings has passed a major milestone at the global box office, emerging as one of the rare religious films to break out into the mainstream. The King of Kings features an all-star cast led by Oscar Isaac, who voices Jesus. It's told from the point of view of Charles Dickens (Kenneth Branagh), who is transported to biblical times with his young son (Roman Griffin Davis). The movie garnered widespread attention on Good Friday especially.

With over $47 million domestically and more than $3 million from overseas markets, The King of Kings has now passed the $50 million mark at the global box office. The film exceeded expectations in its domestic debut, grossing $19 million and finishing second on the charts, behind holdover hit A Minecraft Movie.

The animated movie exceeded expectations in its debut weekend, and fell by just 10% in its sophomore frame. It claimed the number three spot on the domestic box office charts, finishing behind two Warner Bros. hits — director Ryan Coogler’s Sinners and Jared Hess’ A Minecraft Movie.

The King of Kings grossed over $17 million this weekend, after having generated $19 million in its debut weekend. The film’s running domestic total stands at over $45 million. It’s the second-highest-grossing movie for Angel Studios, behind the unexpectedly successful yet hugely controversial blockbuster Sound of Freedom. In its debut weekend, The King of Kings broke The Prince of Egypt’s record for the biggest debut haul for an animated biblical film.
