Wes Anderson Says Gene Hackman Was ‘Furious’ Over ‘Royal Tenenbaums’ Pay and ‘Left Without Saying Goodbye’; They Never Spoke After Film’s Release: ‘We Had Friction’
Image
Wes Anderson spoke to The Sunday Times about the infamous set tension that existed on the set of 2001’s “The Royal Tenenbaums” due to Gene Hackman, who passed away in April. Bill Murray spoke to the Associated Press in the wake of Hackman’s death and said “he was really difficult” on set.

“Gene was very annoyed about the money,” Anderson now revealed. “He was furious. Also, he didn’t want to do the film anyway. I talked him into it — I just didn’t go away. And everybody else said yes to the salary, so Gene just went with it — and that just became our way.”

Hackman played the family patriarch, Royal O’Reilly Tenenbaum, in the 2001 comedy-drama. Anderson was 32 years old at the time of the film’s release, and it was only his third directorial effort. The supporting cast included Murray, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Luke Wilson,...

Wes Anderson Remembers Gene Hackman Being “Furious” About ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’ Flat-Fee Salary: “We Had Friction”
Image
Ahead of the Cannes premiere of his latest film, The Phoenician Scheme, Wes Anderson reflected on the 12 (going on 13) features he’s made, including his approach to keeping costs down while employing elaborate world-building set designs.

In a new interview with The Times U.K., the Oscar winner reflected on how his breakthrough sophomore film Rushmore, starring eventual frequent collaborator Bill Murray, cemented his flat-fee salary approach for all talent, to the chagrin of the late Gene Hackman.

“Gene was very annoyed about the money,” Anderson said of the pic that followed the aforementioned 1998 feature, 2001’s The Royal Tenenbaums, which marks one of Hackman’s final performances. “He was furious. Also, he didn’t want to do the film anyway. I talked him into it — I just didn’t go...

JoBlo gets in on the action for Ballerina with Len Wiseman and 87eleven
Image
John Wick gave action lovers something to rejoice in, and it all started with the perfectly cast Keanu Reeves. But the incredible stuntwork is one of the things that truly set it apart. You could tell that they had something special. And with the mythology behind Wick continuing to grow, and with Ballerina, I’m happy to say that their latest looks like they are continuing to create movie magic.

Back in March, I was given an assignment. JoBlo was invited to take part in the Ballerina 87eleven Stunt Day. I also chatted with the film’s director, Len Wiseman. While that was a few months back, I remember it like yesterday. When we arrived, the journalists and influencers gathered in groups, ready for action. Before the work began, we witnessed a kick ass scene featuring the lovely Ana de Armas. It involved the heroine taking on a bunch of baddies.

Ballerina's Projected Opening Weekend Comes With Good and Bad News for John Wick Franchise
Image
Early box office projections for From the World of John Wick: Ballerina have been revealed. While, at a quick glance, the opening weekend tracking is nothing remarkable from the franchise, a closer look will tell a much different story.

Per Deadline, Ballerina is currently tracking for an opening weekend between $35 million and $40 million at the domestic box office. The bad news is that a $40 million opening would mark a steep drop for the John Wick franchise, given that Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 debuted with $56.8 million and $73.8 million back in 2019 and 2023, respectively. However, the good news is that spinoffs typically open lower than main entries, with Ballerina's current projections similar to fellow offshoots The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes ($44.6M) and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore ($42.1M). Lionsgate also has three more weeks to promote Ballerina with stars Ana de Armas and Keanu Reeves, which will likely...

'That Was Really Bad': Scarlett Johansson Says Former Co-Star Bill Murray Was 'Humbled' by Misconduct Allegations
Image
Scarlett Johansson worked with Bill Murray on the critically acclaimed 2003 film Lost in Translation, and now she's come out to defend her co-star against past claims of misconduct.

In a wide-ranging interview with Vanity Fair, Johansson stated that she believed Murray was a changed man now. But what he did was serious enough to get an entire movie shut down. The film Being Mortal was canceled - and so was Murray - when he was found to have "straddled" a female crew member and kissed her through her Covid mask.

“He’s such a different person now," Johansson told Vanity Fair. "I think life has humbled him.” Asked to clarify if she was talking about the misconduct, she said, "Certainly, yes - that was really bad." She then said, “But I also know Covid was a hard thing for him. Life - all these things have led up to him...

Past marketing for Ballerina has teased the fight sequence between Eve and John that promises to delight longtime fans of the action franchise. However, while the Wick vs. Eve fight is featured yet again, the final trailer is framed around the idea of "fire," with the title assassin shown wielding a flamethrower in one clip and fighting in a burning building in another. How Kathy Bates Proved Misery's Director Wrong With Her Stephen King Role
Image
If there's one thing we know about the Oscars, it's that they have a bias against horror. Although we here at /Film love horror for how subversive and fun the genre can be — and how it's one of the only genres that consistently seems to turn a profit — the Oscar voters seem to see it as too "unrefined" to take seriously. There are too many memorable horror performances that never got a nomination, just as there are too many talented horror directors and screenwriters who never got their due.

That's why nobody expected Kathy Bates to win an Oscar for her performance in the 1990 film "Misery." Although her portrayal of the obsessive, vindictive Annie Wilkes is still beloved even 35 years later, its horror movie context still made it a long shot as far as the Academy was concerned. That's why the movie's director, Rob Reiner, had no faith in Bates...

Keanu Reeves on ‘John Wick’: ‘I don’t do stunts — I do action’
Image
“I don’t do stunts,” Keanu Reeves said at the premiere of the documentary Wick Is Pain. “Stunt people do stunts. They’re like, ‘Look at all those stunts you did.’ I’m like, ‘F--k that. Jackson [Spidell] just got hit by a car twice.’ I don’t do stunts. I do action.”

Reeves made the distinction during a Q&a following a special Beyond Fest screening at the American Cinematheque’s Aero Theater in Santa Monica where he was joined by the creators of the John Wick franchise. The two-hour documentary, now available on VOD, chronicles Reeves' intense training for each film and his execution of John Wick’s violent rampages.

Across four films — and a cameo in the upcoming spinoff From the World of John Wick: Ballerina — Reeves portrays Wick, a legendary assassin drawn back into the underworld after gangsters kill his dog. That single event sets off a...

Keanu Reeves Clariifies Involvement With Ballerina, Promises Spinoff Maintains the 'Spirit of John Wick'
Image
From the World of John Wick: Ballerina might not be about the Baba Yaga, but Keanu Reeves enjoyed his time back on set.

"I just had like eight days on it, but it was fun to play the role again, and I'm excited for people to see the film," Reeves said at a screening of the upcoming John Wick documentary Wick is Pain, per THR. While his total screentime remains unknown, Reeves felt the spinoff retained "the spirit of John Wick and has new characters and opens up some stuff, so hopefully people like it," additionally praising lead actor -- and former Knock Knock co-star -- Ana de Armas for her performance as assassin Eva Macarro.

While Ballerina's first trailer saw Eve confront Wick about being like him, the latest trailer revealed that he will play a semi-antagonistic role, having been sent to prevent Eve from destabilizing the peace between crime bosses.

But unbeknownst to Mike, the house that he has set his heart on has a dark past that goes back for centuries.

'It Will Be Really Different': How John Wick 5 Will Continue the Story Explained by Director
Image
With John Wick 5 officially announced, fans keep speculating how Keanu Reeves' titular hitman will rise from the proverbial ashes after seemingly dying in the last sequel, Chapter 4. Though Wick's saga is "over," according to franchise director Chad Stahelski, movie lovers can expect fresh twists and turns that differentiate the next film from previous installments.

Speaking with Empire, Stahelski explained how John Wick 5 will continue Wick's story after the ending of Chapter 4, which saw him succumb to shot wounds following a faceoff with Caine (Donnie Yen) and his cohorts looking on at his gravesite. Though Chapter 4 chronicled Wick's battle with the High Table, Stahelski claimed John Wick 5's story would move on from that saga and teased that there's more to his anticipated return than meets the eye.

“The saga of John Wick was pretty wrapped up,” he said. “So the only way to do a 5 is to have a new story that involves John Wick.

Ballerina Stills Spotlight Intense Flamethrower Sequence That Shocked Ana de Armas
Image
Ballerina opens in just about a month, and as the marketing campaign ramps up, we've received a handful of new stills from the actioner, featuring Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro, a young new Ruska Roma assassin that is out for revenge.

Like with any John Wick film, this one will also showcase extensive stunt work and larger than life action set pieces, none bigger than a sequence that will see the film's Academy Award-nominated star wield a flamethrower to take on a horde of baddies.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, de Armas detailed her rehearsal for the flamethrower sequence and how the whole experince absolutely shook her to her core. "I remember the first day the stunt team was practicing with the fire, and they told me to go do it before the shoot, and I said, 'No, no, no, I'll be fine,' and they got the main fire guy that gets burned,...

Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock will reunite for an untitled romantic thriller for Amazon MGM Studios
Keanu Reeves
Pop quiz, Hot Shot! Where would a new movie starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock rank in a long list of in-demand Hollywood reunions? Before you answer, remember the duo’s outstanding chemistry in the Jan de Bont-directed action thriller Speed. If that’s not enough, think about their enchanting romantic drama The Lake House. You see what I’m getting at. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock will reunite for an untitled romantic thriller at Amazon MGM Studios.

The project boasts a script by Noah Oppenheim, the writer of the 2016 Jackie Kennedy Onassis biopic Jackie. Plot details remain a mystery. Still, THR says they’ve heard the story is “propulsive.” I admit that’s not a lot to go on, but knowing Reeves and Bullock are attached is enough for me. The untitled project finds Reeves and Bullock re-teaming with Speed producer Mark Gordon,...

Wes Anderson movies: All 11 films ranked worst to best
Image
Wes Anderson is the singularly talented filmmaker who has quickly gone from indie darling to Oscar favorite in just a little over two decades, creating a number of quirky, visually splendid classics. Let's take a look back at all 11 of Anderson's films, ranked worst to best.

Anderson made his directorial debut with "Bottle Rocket" (1996), released when he was just 27-years-old. He received his first Oscar nomination five years later: Best Original Screenplay for "The Royal Tenenbaums" (2001). He followed that eight years later with a Best Animated Feature bid for the stop-motion film "Fantastic Mr. Fox" (2009). Another Best Original Screenplay nomination followed for "Moonrise Kingdom" (2012). Then he hit the Oscar jackpot with Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay nominations for "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (2014) -- well, almost hit the jackpot, since he went home empty-handed from those awards, losing all three to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for "Birdman." Ballerina: John Wick spin-off unveils a dozen character posters
Image
Back in 2017, Lionsgate bought an action thriller spec script called Ballerina, which was written by Shay Hatten and ranked on The Black List as one of the best unproduced screenplays of that year. The idea was to have Hatten rewrite the script to take place within the world of Lionsgate’s John Wick franchise – and Hatten was also hired to co-write John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, which included a set-up for the Ballerina concept of ballerina assassins. Hatten did his rewrite, Len Wiseman was hired to direct the film, Ana de Armas was cast as the title character, and now, Ballerina is ready to make its way out into the world, with a theatrical release scheduled for June 6th. Last week, Lionsgate released a new poster for the film – and now, they have unveiled a dozen character posters! You can check them out at the bottom of this article.

Jack Nicholson offered his home to Anjelica Huston during LA wildfires
Image
For close to two decades, Jack Nicholson and Anjelica Huston were one of Hollywood’s top power couples. And while the flame fizzled, Nicholson proved how much of a card he still is by offering Huston his home as a refuge for her as she evacuated during this year’s wildfires in Los Angeles.

Anjelica Huston recently spoke of how Jack Nicholson reached out, saying, “The phone just rang out of nowhere, and it was him. It’s always a comfort when he calls. It was heartbreakingly sweet. I’ve gone back over it several times in my head, and I think next time I’d accept the invitation.”

Anjelica Huston and Jack Nicholson don’t see each other much anymore, which comes down to a mixture of being busy and construction… “Life gets in the way. Also, for some reason, they’ve been doing endless rerouting and road work near his house,...

Towards Zero Is Glamorous, Gorgeous and Sneakily Sexy — Here Are 5 Reasons to Check Out BritBox’s New Agatha Christie Series

Growing up, whenever I heard the name Agatha Christie, it was generally because our family’s TV was tuned to PBS. And while what I’m about to say is in no way fair to the famed mystery writer’s rich oeuvre, nor its wide and varied body of television adaptations, it’s true: I pretty much associated the author’s name with stuffy-seeming men with signature mustaches, looking intrigued.

Case in point:

Ballerina's lead engages the Baba Yaga in a brand new poster for the upcoming John Wick spinoff.

The poster spotlights Ana de Armas' Eve Macarro in a crowded field of new and familiar faces to the John Wick universe, including Wick (Keanu Reeves), the Director (Anjelica Huston), and Winston (Ian McShane) surrounded by guns and ornamental backgrounds. A knife fight between Macarro and Wick can also be seen in the middle of the poster, mirroring the recent Ballerina trailer shown at CinemaCon. Earlier this week, Ballerina's X page further hyped up de Armas' hand-to-hand combat via a behind-the-scenes clip of her getting thrown around by an extra, even getting a few hits on him with a frying pan.

'Towards Zero' Stars on Facing Off Against Anjelica Huston
Image
Academy Award-winner Anjelica Huston continues to steal the show in whichever project she's gracing. That includes the small screen, with the renowned American actress venturing over to the English territory for Agatha Christie's Towards Zero as her latest on-screen venture. For those who have read the iconic author's 1944 detective novel, Lady Tressilian is a key figure in the storyline — so it's a no-brainer that the role in a modern-day TV adaptation would go to a Hollywood staple like Huston.

Portraying the Lady's assistant in the TV show is Anjana Vasan (Black Mirror). Tressilian also has a grown son who has just scandalously taken a new lover when the miniseries begins, a beautiful young woman named Kay (played by Sex Education star Mimi Keene). MovieWeb recently caught up with Vasan and Keene in a paired interview leading up to the release of Towards Zero on BritBox. Both performers reflected...
