Film Constellation is launching international sales on “About a Hero,” directed by Piotr Winiewicz, an AI-driven murder mystery set to open the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). Variety premieres the film’s teaser here.
The film is an adaptation of a script co-written by an AI trained on Werner Herzog’s body of work, with his permission. Winiewicz was inspired by a quote from Herzog himself stating: “A computer will not create a film as good as mine in 4,500 years.” The result is a fictional narrative that is ironically self-reflective, interlaced with a collection of interviews with artists, philosophers and scientists reflecting on the notion of originality, authenticity, immortality and soul in the age of AI.
When a local factory worker named Dorem Clery dies under mysterious circumstances, the film’s narrator, Werner Herzog, travels to Getunkirchenburg to investigate his perplexing death. But Herzog is not who he seems,...

An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the original Nosferatu has the following synopsis: In this highly influential silent horror film, the mysterious Count Orlok (Max Schreck) summons Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to his remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains. The five character posters instead spotlight stars Nicholas Hoult, Emma Corrin, Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp, and you can check them out below.
Nosferatu will release in theaters on December 25, 2024.

As part of Marvel Television's 2025 slate preview, we have a first look at Wonder Man ahead of its release on Disney+ next December.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is playing Simon Williams and, in this brief preview, we discover that he's an actor auditioning for the lead role in a movie called "Wonder Man."
Marvel Studios is clearly putting a different spin on the Avenger here and we'd imagine he'll somehow acquire powers during this story...unless he already has them, of course. Either way, this misadventure is something Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Sir Ben Kingsley appears to be at the centre of as the returning Trevor Slattery.
Wonder Man may be a standalone story about Simon pretending to be the hero he's playing on screen but given how powerful the character is in the comics,...

Spooky season is here, which means it’s time for movies featuring all manner of ghouls, creeps, and monsters. And there may be no monster more famous than Count Dracula, the blood-sucking vampire introduced in Bram Stoker’s gothic horror novel Dracula. He’s appeared onscreen countless times in various iterations – far too many to list here. But here are a few notable Dracula adaptations to sink your teeth into this Halloween.

Vampires have fascinated filmmakers since the early days of cinema. Director F.W. Murnau’s 1922 Nosferatu is an unauthorized adaptation of Dracula. The movie was nearly lost to history when all copies were ordered destroyed after Stoker’s widow sued for copyright infringement. But a print survived, and the movie has gone on to become an influential classic. (The Witch director Robert Eggers’ remake is due out later this year.

For over 100 years now, Nosferatu has been the ultimate cinematic vampire – or, ‘vampyr’, if you want to go really old-school – story. The crooked shadow of Fw Murnau's 1922 film still looms large over the genre, later reimagined by Werner Herzog in his 1979 Nosferatu. Even the making of Nosferatu still has its fangs in people, as fictionalised in 2000’s Shadow Of The Vampire, in which Willem Dafoe’s Max Schrek – the actor who played Count Orlok – turns out to actually be a vampire. All of which to say, Robert Eggers has big shoes to fill with his 2024 take on Nosferatu – conjuring a full-blooded vision of the classic story in all its gothic terror.
When it came to finding real-life locations befitting an ancient vampire’s lair, it was impossible not to reconnect with Nosferatu history. The gatehouse and courtyard of Count Orlok’s gaff in Eggers film was shot at Pernštejn...

Robert Eggers, the modern master of gothic horror, is at long last bringing his deep-and-dark passion project to theaters this, uh, Christmas!
The notion of remaking an all-time classic like F.W. Murnau's "Nosferatu" might sound utterly mad, but this kind of risk-taking is what we've come to expect from the man who gave us "The Witch," "The Lighthouse" and "The Northman." Eggers is a conjurer. He can tell a good, tight story, but you go to his movies to be seduced by whatever spell he's casting. And when it comes to "Nosferatu," judging from the spooky trailer it looks like we'll be getting a big ol' dollop of dread.
Authenticity is a key to Eggers approach, which is why he loves to shoot out in the elements as much as possible. With "Nosferatu," he's taking this commitment to tactile cinema further than many filmmakers have gone before -- specifically,...

After stirring much controversy with his screenplay for Larry Clark’s Kids, Harmony Korine doubled down on his unsparing view of down-and-out youth with his 1997 feature directorial debut, Gummo. Set in Xenia, Ohio, but shot in the derelict outskirts of Korine’s childhood hometown of Nashville, the film depicts the corners of America that go neglected to the point of ruin. Even the setting of Xenia is telling: Gummo takes place in the present, but the opening narration by Solomon (Jacob Reynolds) focuses on the massive 1974 tornado that devastated the town, and one gets the sense from images of dilapidated buildings and masses of junk littering yards and streets that the area never recovered.
Deliberately eschewing a linear narrative that might have brought a larger thematic structure to the film, Korine instead arranges Gummo as a series of vignettes that allows for perspective to switch between characters like a baton.

Back in 2015, it was announced that The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers (who was, at that time, had only made The Witch) was planning to remake F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here). It took Eggers several years to get to Nosferatu, though, and we’ll finally have the chance to see his take on the concept when his movie reaches theatres on Wednesday, December 25th. About eight and half months after Eggers’ Nosferatu was first announced, we heard that filming had begun on a separate Nosferatu remake. Or, as the director referred to it, a remix. That was David Lee Fisher’s Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror… and that movie has now made its way out into the world! Fisher’s movie is available for purchase on Prime Video, going for the price of $4.99. It will also be released through Apple TV tomorrow,...

Named “The Netflix for Indie Film” by The Wall Street Journal, Fandor’s goal is to preserve film art and culture.
I love blockbusters as much as the next guy (probably more!), but sometimes it’s nice to break out of the mainstream and watch something a little more elevated. If you’re a cinephile who seeks substance over blockbusters, Fandor might be just what you’re looking for.
Specializing in indie films, international cinema, documentaries, and classic movies, Fandor gives viewers a curated experience for film buffs who appreciate the artistry and diversity most larger platforms don’t offer. Gummo, spine #1238, will release in the Criterion Collection on October 22, 2024.
Outside of Gummo and Spring Breakers I’ve not seen any of Harmony Korine’s filmography. Based on those two films I’d come to the conclusion that his vision and style of filmmaking didn’t align with the types of films I enjoy. Despite my negative first reaction to Gummo, which I watched in 2004 at the age of seventeen, I’ve never forgotten the movie and what a strange viewing experience it was. Now that I’m in my thirties and with the Criterion Collection releasing a brand new 4K transfer, it seemed like the perfect time to revisit it and see if my feelings had changed.

The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam — known globally as IDFA — has revealed its 2024 opening night and competition films coming this November. The 37th edition kicks off with Piotr Winiewicz’s “About a Hero” featuring Vicky Krieps and the filmography of Werner Herzog.
Per the festival, “The film presents a bold exploration into largely uncharted territories of artificial intelligence — reflecting on questions of authenticity and our understanding of what is real. With Werner Herzog’s permission, Winiewicz sets out to challenge Herzog’s assertion that ‘a computer won’t be able to create a film as good as mine for at least another 4,500 years.’ In a tantalizing experiment, Winiewicz trained an AI system on Herzog’s oeuvre and asked it to generate a screenplay. The result is a disturbing search for the soul — of human beings and of creative work.”

Nosferatu: Robert Eggers remake gets an international trailer, unveils a new image of Nicholas Hoult
The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Anticipation for The Witch and The Northman director Robert Eggers' Nosferatu remake is at an all-time high following the recent release of a terrifying full trailer, and the filmmaker has now promised that Bill Skarsgard's new take on Count Orlok will make vampire's scary again.
Aside from a few brief glimpses and an unsettling look at his silhouette as he terrorizes his latest victim, the trailers have kept Orlok under wraps, but Eggers teases that our first proper look at the ancient blood-sucker will be worth the wait during a new interview with Total Film.
"We’ve gone all the way to Edward Cullen, where vampires are not scary. So how do we go in the complete opposite direction of that? Vampires were scary enough that people used to dig up corpses and chop them into bits and set them on fire."

Bubble, boil, steam, and burn, it’s time to watch those film reels turn. That’s right, it’s October, which means it’s almost Halloween, but the minute the clock struck midnight on the 1st, we here at IndieWire were already decked in black and frightening our office mates at Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. While carving pumpkins, eating candy, and donning elaborate costumes may be how most ring in this special time of year, we believe there’s no better celebration of spooky season than entering a dark theater and sharing a few collective screams with strangers.

He's chilled us to the bone with accursed goats (The Witch). He's chilled us to the bone with accursed lighthouses (The Lighthouse). And he's chilled us to the bone with blood-soaked tales of viking vengeance (The Northman). Now, after over 10 years trying to get his passion project made, modern horror master Robert Eggers is mere months away from unleashing his Nosferatu on the world. And following a slew of eerie posters and a terrifying, tone-setting teaser for his reimagining of the classic F.W. Murnau vampire chiller, the full trailer for Eggers' Bill Skarsgård, Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, and Willem Dafoe led Gothic horror is here. Check it out below:

Nosferatu is quite easily the most highly anticipated horror movie heading our way in 2024. Today, a new trailer has been released (via FearHQ.com) which suggests this filmmaker Robert Eggers will deliver the most spine-chilling, terrifying Christmas in recent memory.
Once again stopping short of fully revealing Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, the focus is primarily on the twisted relationship between the vampire and Lily-Rose Depp's Ellen Hutter.
The atmospheric and creepy preview also features a lot of blood and it's clear Nosferatu won't be for the faint of heart. Superman star Nicholas Hoult also gets a fair bit of screentime, while it looks like we're in store for another compelling Willem Dafoe performance.
When Eggers released The Witch way back in 2016, he put himself on the map as someone who can use horror to truly terrify audiences. He'd follow that movie with The Lighthouse and The Northman but...

Robert Eggers is continuing his cult films of the occult.
The “Witch” and “The Northman” auteur takes on his long-gestating reimagining of “Nosferatu,” with Bill Skarsgård playing the titular vampire. “The Idol” breakout Lily-Rose Depp stars as Ellen Hutter, a woman whose soul is seduced by Count Orlok (Skarsgård) while her husband Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) fights to save her.
Eggers writes and directs the remake of F. W. Murnau’s 1922 film, which was later adapted by Werner Herzog in 1979. The Paddington films have always been imbued with a deep love of cinema. Paul King’s Paddington and Paddington 2 revelled in creating handcrafted textures, both beautifully shot and making nods to classic slapstick comedies, prison escape dramas, and soundstage musicals. Next, Paddington is venturing out of London – make way for Paddington In Peru, a threequel that sees Dougal Wilson make his directorial debut, taking the reins from King, and sending our young furry hero (and the Brown family) on an Amazonian adventure. That change of location means an influx of new cinematic touchstones.
Notably, Wilson mentions an influence from Werner Herzog’s jungle-traversing Aguirre, The Wrath Of God, and Fitzcarraldo. Yes, in a Paddington movie. It comes with the Peruvian territory – literally. “Peru has this incredible variety of landscapes, crazy geology, especially the Andes and the mysterious Incan side,” the director tells Empire. “If you’ve seen [Werner Herzog’s] Aguirre, The Wrath Of God,...

‘"Til you bid me come, shall you watch the world become as naught."
It's been confirmed that a new trailer for Robert Eggers' highly-anticipated Nosferatu remake will be released this Monday, and the movie's official social media accounts have now shared a foreboding new teaser in anticipation.
The brief clip features a sweeping shot of a mysterious stone structure with a hexagram symbol on the outside, which might well be where Bill Skarsgård's titular undead nobleman, Count Orlok, takes his rest during the day.
Orlok has mostly been kept under wraps, but we caught a very quick glimpse of the vampire sinking his fangs into an unfortunate victim's neck in the first trailer, and another as he slowly turns around to face the camera.
Will our next look at the movie fully unveil the monster? Check back here on Monday to find out!

In Michael Samoski's 2021 drama "Pig," Nicolas Cage plays a quiet, bearded recluse named Rob Feld who lives in a remote woodland cabin with his unnamed pet pig. The pig is a skilled truffle forager, and Rob makes a living selling truffles to a restaurant supplier (Alex Wolff) who occasionally drives out to his cabin. Rob clearly has a dark past, but has seemingly found peace in the woods. One night, however, Rob is attacked, and his pig is stolen. Rob has to trek into nearby Portland to retrieve his animal friend, and, we learn, confront his past.
As the film progresses, we discover that Rob had unusual connections in the world of Portland's high-end restaurateurs, and that he participated in eatery-related underground fighting rings (!). He's also still in mourning over the death of his wife years before, which was the primary impetus driving Rob to become a recluse. More than anything,...

The Paddington saga is one of the most highly successful animated films of all time. Not only the first two films performed well at the box office, but they also earned critical acclaim. Such feat warranted another sequel, and this time, fans will be transported in a jungle adventure in Paddington in Peru.

The third installment is the first project in the franchise that won’t be helmed by director Paul King, though he took part in the story conceptualization, ensuring that the new film aligns with the core theme and message of the previous ones.
Paddington in Peru Oozes With Peruvian Culture and Folklore
Helmed by Dougal Wilson, Paddington in Peru will follow the adventures of Paddington, voiced by Ben Whishaw, and his adopted family as they traverse the Amazon rainforest and the Peruvian mountains in search of Aunt Lucy.

The Trailer for Michael B. Jordan’s Vampire Film ‘Sinners’ Is Out Before ‘Blade’ Even Begins Filming
Michael B. Jordan is back in action with his “Black Panther” writer/director Ryan Coogler.
The trailer for “Sinners,” the highly-anticipated vampire movie from the MCU duo, is officially out years before the long-awaited “Blade” remake. “Sinners” has been positioned as the non-mcu-sanctioned take on the “Blade” comics. While Coogler has made two Marvel films (the “Black Panther” features), “Sinners” is entirely separate from the franchise — and probably for the best.
Marvel’s “Blade” starring Mahershala Ali was first announced in 2019. Since then, it’s had a rotating door of writers and directors.
Coogler and Jordan first collaborated on “Fruitvale Station,” and then moved on to “Creed.” Jordan later made his directorial debut with “Creed III.”
“Sinners,” again written and directed by Coogler, centers on twin brothers — both played by Jordan — who return to their New Orleans hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

One of the most famous silent movies of all time is the original Nosferatu. Fans are clamoring for the upcoming remake from Robert Eggers, the director of The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman. Famously, Nosferatu has already been remade as a sound film. Sadly, it was an embarrassing misfire.
An arthouse director gave us his remake of ‘Nosferatu’ in the 1970s
Werner Herzog is one of the most acclaimed arthouse movie directors and German directors ever. Most of his films were not made for the mainstream but his remake of Nosferatu — titled Nosferatu the Vampyre — has broad appeal. After all, 20th-century audiences couldn’t get enough of a certain vampiric count.
The problem here is Klaus Kinski’s version of Count Dracula. In the original Nosferatu, the character eerily pitched somewhere between a human being and an insect. Other interpretations of the count are more suave and seductive. Meanwhile,...

There's a huge amount of excitement surrounding Nosferatu and a terrifying glimpse of Count Orlok has been revealed on the first poster for the movie. With any luck, this means another trailer is going to be released any day now (and surely in time for Halloween).
When filmmaker Robert Eggers released The Witch way back in 2016, he put himself on the map as someone who can use horror to truly terrify audiences. He'd follow that movie with The Lighthouse and The Northman but is making a full-blown horror return with Nosferatu this Christmas.
A remake of F. W. Murnau's 1922 version and Werner Herzog's take in 1979, Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.
"Yeah, it’s a scary film. It’s a horror movie. It’s a Gothic horror movie," Eggers said last year.

It would be completely understandable that Ron Howard, having directed more than two dozen genre-tripping films spanning six decades, would want to shake things up a bit by jumping into something outside his proven comfort zone. And it would be equally logical that the vehicle to take him there would be a certifiably bizarre but true account of a 1920s German philosopher who sets up an experimental society with his lover/disciple on a remote island in the Galápagos, only to have it all implode when opportunists come and crash the party.
But despite all the intriguing possibilities of the concept and a game, international cast including Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Brühl and Sydney Sweeney, Eden, handed its world premiere at Toronto, never finds its happy place. The prevailing overwrought tone lands more cartoonish than satirical, while a protracted running time accentuates the film’s deficiencies.

We are just months away from the release of Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu,” the reimagining of F. W. Murnau’s 1922 film, later remade by Werner Herzog in 1979. Star Nicholas Hoult, who plays Thomas Hutter, is teasing just how terrifying Bill Skarsgård is going to be as Count Orlok.
“He’s terrifying, it’s not Bill,” Hoult told IndieWire at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of “The Order.” “That’s what’s so worrying about it. He gives a truly transformative performance where there is not anything of Bill left and it’s scary and intimidating. His voice, his physicality, I mean the makeup he has, it’s really a wonderful character and he did beautiful character work with it.”

He has made feverish films about crazed obsessives – but one idea was too excessive. The great director explains why Mexico, featuring acting frogs and fleets of ships on fire, is finding an audience at last
Werner Herzog has two faces, both wearing the same expression of grave forbearance. To some, he is the formidable adventurer-auteur whose cinematic odysseys, such as Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre, the Wrath of God, doubled as life-imperilling expeditions for cast and crew. Millions of others know him only from his work in front of the camera, as a villain in Jack Reacher or as the mysterious Client in the Star Wars spin-off The Mandalorian.
Herzog turns 82 tomorrow, but ask him how he feels about a career spanning more than six decades and he will protest. “I had no career,” he says, squinting into his webcam from a book-lined office in his Los Angeles home. “I had a...

As always, the Telluride Film Festival, which runs over the four-day Labor Day weekend in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, waits until the day before the Friday festival launch to release its official selection.
Per usual, many of the slate’s titles have already leaked via publicists and attendees, and few of the most prominent first showings — from Edward Berger’s pope drama “Conclave” (Focus) and Jason Reitman’s recreation of the 1975 launch of SNL, “Saturday Night” (Sony) to RaMell’s Ross’s Colson Whitehead adaptation “Nickel Boys” (Amazon/MGM) — are news at this point. Still, there’s plenty new to dive into.
Festival director Julie Huntsinger, who has been running the festival for years but officially took over the solo reins from the late Tom Luddy with last year’s 50th edition, got on the phone with IndieWire to discuss the selection of nearly sixty feature films, short films,...

The recent teaser for Robert Eggers' Nosferatu left horror fans thirsty for more, and we're hearing that a second trailer might be right around the corner. In the meantime, Focus Features (via FearHQ.com) has released a bloody new still featuring Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Sutter
The still finds the tormented Ellen with blood pouring from her eyes and mouth. Unless this is a pretty significant spoiler, we'd say this is from a dream sequence or vision.
The first trailer mostly kept Bill Skarsgård's titular undead nobleman, Count Orlok, under wraps, aside a very quick glimpse of the vampire sinking his fangs into an unfortunate victim's neck, and another as he slowly turns around to face the camera. Will our next look at the movie fully unveil the monster? We'd say they'll keep him hidden for as long as possible.
It was very difficult to make out the creature...
