7 Sci-Fi Series from the ‘80s We Want to Revisit
Image
We love the ’80s and we’re not ashamed to say it.

If you weren’t alive during the most epic era ever — here’s looking at you, Gen Zers — you missed out on some great TV, especially if you’re a science fiction buff.

From AI cars and furry alien creatures to time travel and horror-filled galaxy expeditions, originality reigned supreme during the ’80s.

(CBS/Screenshot)

At the time, it was quality over quantity.

We didn’t have streaming services like Netflix and Peacock.

We just had good old satellite and cable TV.

Let’s revisit some of our favorite sci-fi series from the 80s.

Star Trek: The Next Generation – 1987 (CBS/Screenshot)

Star Trek: The Next Generation was the third series in the Star Trek franchise. It debuted in 1987 and quickly became a hit with viewers.

The series is set in the late 24th century, with Earth as part...

‘Kung Fury 2’ Leak: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Fassbender, and David Hasselhoff Star in Wild Promo Footage
Image
A leaked promo for Kung Fury 2 just dropped online, and it’s as wild as it sounds. One of the most shocking moments? Arnold Schwarzenegger riding a dinosaur! Yes, you read that right.

Kung Fury 2, also known as Kung Fury: The Movie, is the long-awaited follow-up to the 2015 short film Kung Fury. The original film was a crazy, over-the-top tribute to 1980s sci-fi action movies and became a viral hit. Now, the feature-length sequel promises to be even more outrageous.

The film is written, directed by, and stars David Sandberg. It also features big names like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Fassbender, Alexandra Shipp, David Hasselhoff, and Jorma Taccone. While the movie has been delayed for years due to legal issues over visual effects, this leaked clip has fans buzzing.

The promo video leaked last week and was confirmed as real by Sandberg himself. In the clip, you can see:...

5 Things We Learned From the Leaked 10-Minute ‘Kung Fury 2’ Footage
Image
Sometimes the world hands you lemons, and sometimes it hands you Arnold Schwarzenegger riding a dinosaur while fighting Nazis. Now, you might be wondering where this ridiculous yet oddly entertaining notion sprouted from. Well, some films make you think. Some make you cry. And then there’s Kung Fury 2: a cinematic roundhouse kick to the brain that cares little for permission, logic, or linear storytelling.

It’s been a long decade of radio silence since this neon-soaked fever dream, helmed by David Sandberg, vanished into a labyrinth of lawsuits. But now, thanks to a leaked 10-minute footage, the chaos has been unleashed… and it’s even more unhinged than anyone expected.

Note that the footage was mysteriously uploaded by an anonymous YouTube user. Variety confirmed its legitimacy, and director-star David Sandberg admitted it contains unfinished VFX and spoilers. But who cares? Here are five things we have learned from this mind-melting preview.

‘Kung Fury 2’ Sizzle Reel: Michael Fassbender & Arnold Schwarzenegger Star In Leaked Footage From Absurdist Comedy
Image
“Kung Fury” was the fevered dream of Swedish filmmaker David Sandberg, who crowd-sourced a wild genre-bending short film take on the cop action film by throwing all sorts of insane elements, including Vikings, dinosaurs, time-travel, and a kung fu-trained satirical version of Adolph Hitler played by Lonely Island member Jorma Taccone. And over the weekend, high-resolution footage from the long-wrapped “Kung Fury 2” that features Michael Fassbender (“Black Bag”), Alexandra Shipp (“X-Men: Apocalypse”), David Hasselhoff, and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the President of the United States made its way online in the form of a 10-minute sizzle reel.

Must See Badass Sizzle Reel Promo for 'Kung Fury 2' Lost Since 2020
Image
"I eat lions every goddamn day. If you're not prepared to do the same, then you hang up that hat, walk out that door, and you never come back..." Hell yes - I want to watch this! Some of you will remember a badass short (at 30 mins!) film from 2015 called Kung Fury, made by Swedish filmmaker David Sandberg (no relation to Shazam! director David F. Sandberg). This was his own big project and it was a huge hit when it launched online - watch here. In 2018 he started development on a full-length feature version called Kung Fury: The Movie or Kung Fury 2. He was somehow able to wrangle up Michael Fassbender, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and David Hasselhoff for the cast, and shot the film in 2019. But after legal troubles and other setbacks, the pandemic kicked in and the film has been stuck in release limbo. Word is that it's finished...

‘Kung Fury’ Leaked Footage of Sci-fi Nazi Alien Action With Arnold Schwarzenegger Addressed by David Sandberg
Image
There are some movies that have to be seen to be believed and top of that pile would be Kung Fury: The Movie. Or, it would be if we ever got to see it. Unfortunately, thanks to lawsuits, unpaid Chinese debts, and plenty of other chaos behind the scenes, David Sandberg's indescribable action movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and MIchael Fassbender is currently stuck in limbo, and has been for the last five years. Or at least it was until a 10-minute-long sizzle reel of footage was leaked online, giving everyone a look at the movie that seems to completely ignore the coherent rules of moviemaking in favor of a film that has "cult classic" written all over it.

However, in response to the footage, director Sandberg explained to Variety that the footage was never meant to be seen by the public as it contains plenty of spoilers and unfinished effects.

Kung Fury: The Movie - Arnold Schwarzenegger & Michael Fassbender Kill Nazis In Crazy Leaked Sizzle Reel
Image
The first footage from director David Sandberg's Kung Fury: The Movie, aka Kung Fury 2, has found its way online via a 10-minute leaked sizzle reel, and this might just be one of the most gloriously insane things you're ever likely to watch.

The retro action/sci-fi comedy has been stuck in limbo since production was forced to shut down five years ago after a lawsuit between the producers and the film’s Chinese investors, Creasun. In late 2020, Creasun Entertainment USA was accused of refusing to come up with the $10 million it promised, effectively bringing the movie to a screeching halt.

“This was an internal promo video that was never supposed to be seen by the public. I feel bad because it contains a bunch of plot points and temp VFX,” Sandberg told Variety in a statement. “I hope at least people can see the passion that we poured into the movie,...

Kung Fury 2 sizzle reel leaks online; has already been taken down
Arnold Schwarzenegger in Kung Fury 2
Update: Well, that joy was short-lived, with the (awesome) Kung Fury 2 sizzle reel already being pulled off YouTube due to copyright claims. Hopefully, the added notoriety will mean that the film will get some kind of release (sooner or later), but for now, the 10-minute rip was as close as we are gonna get. Hopefully, all of you reading this saw it during its brief moment of availability, as it was glorious.

Original Post: When David Sandberg released his homage to ‘80s martial arts flicks, Kung Fury, a decade ago, it was just what fans needed: a glorious nod to a genre so many of us grew up with that just doesn’t fly in the modern age. But now he is more furious than ever, with Kung Fury 2 headed our way soon. And to promote Kung Fury 2, a sizzle reel of some of the greatest hits,...

‘Kung Fury 2’: Insane 10-Minute Sizzle Reel Leaked of Action-Comedy Starring Michael Fassbender and Arnold Schwarzenegger and Stuck in Legal Limbo Since 2020
Image
A high-octane, wildly colourful and mostly insane sizzle reel for “Kung Fury 2,” an action-comedy starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Fassbender and David Hasselhoff that shut down during post-production in 2020 due to legal issues, has been leaked online.

The outrageously over-the-top and action-packed 10-minute promo shows Schwarzenegger as a cigar-chomping, shotgun-toting U.S. president “out to kick some Nazi ass,” Fassbender as a renegade FBI agent boasting an impressive mullet and explaining how to make a “justice omelette,” and David Hasselhoff in a red leather jumpsuit cradling some puppies and transforming into an 80s sports car called the Hoff 9000. A preposterous plot appears to involve a wildly eclectic team of human, dinosaur and half-human-half-dinosaur crime-fighters called the Thunder Cops, led by the high-kicking Kung Fury (played by writer/director David Sandberg), on a mission to clean up the streets of 1985 Miami, a mission that is somehow derailed by “the worst criminal of all time,...

'The Conjuring's 'Crooked Man' Horror Movie Was Scrapped Because Fans Wanted 'The Nun' Says James Wan
Image
James Wan has been the mastermind behind some of the greatest horror movies of the last 20 years, both as a director and producer. However, one movie that got away – for now – was his planned spinoff from The Conjuring franchise centered on The Crooked Man character. While fans of the creepy franchise were massively disappointed when the offshoot was scrapped, it seems that they are actually to blame for the film’s demise – as they became too obsessed with another character instead.

The Conjuring was released in 2013, with a sequel following 2016. However, in between was Annabelle, a spinoff focusing on the vintage doll, which proved that there was plenty of scope for movies outside the main franchise to be incredibly popular. Following The Conjuring 2, there were plans for The Crooked Man to be the next adjacent movie, but something else captured the public’s attention. As Wan told Entertainment Weekly...

Who’s ‘the Guy From Baywatch’ Mentioned On The Valley?
Image
The Baywatch rumor originated from Season 2, Episode 2 of The Valley. Jesse Lally spoke to Scheana Shay about his new girlfriend, Lacy Nicole. There was a rumor that she cheated on him with multiple men, including “the guy from Baywatch.” Nicole Eggert, who starred on the original series, shared her thoughts on this mystery.

Who’s The Guy From Baywatch?

Jesse met with his ex-wife, Michelle. The two had a tense discussion about co-parenting. Somehow, the conversation shifted to Michelle accusing Jesse’s new girlfriend of talking about him behind his back. She then revealed a claim that Lacy told Scheana that she had cheated on Jesse more than once.

Jesse immediately called up Scheana on the phone, who confirmed the rumor. She wouldn’t name who “the guy from Baywatch is.” However, this had fans wondering who the guy could be. Social media immediately burned up with questions like, “Who is the guy from Baywatch?...

Paul Nichols, Longtime TV Publicist, Dies at 76
Image
Paul Nichols, a veteran publicist who had stints at Group W, All American Television, Sony Pictures Television and the Lippin Group, has died. He was 76.

Nichols died March 14 at his home in Weatherford, Texas, his family announced. His wife of 31 years, Linda, died 12 days before he did.

In 1991, Nichols helped All American Television bring Baywatch into first-run syndication, a move that essentially kicked off the weekly action-hour craze of the 1990s and early 2000s. The David Hasselhoff starrer had been canceled by NBC after one season but went on to air for 10 more years, through 2001.

Fellow publicist Les Eisner said Nichols “was largely responsible for branding [Baywatch] as the world’s most-watched TV series. Whether that was true or not, who knows? But it stuck.”

Born on March 22, 1948, in Wilmington, Delaware, Nichols graduated from State College Area High School in State College, Pennsylvania, in 1966 and from Penn State University in...

Baywatch's Bizarre Spin-Off Changed Genres Between Seasons
Image
It cannot be understated how huge "Baywatch" was. It was a goofy show with lightweight drama, resting somewhere on a matrix that incorporated soap operas, "Gilligan's Island"-like sitcoms, and 1970s "jiggle" shows like "Charlie's Angels." The central appeal of "Baywatch" was, of course, witnessing attractive people in swimsuits running dramatically down the beaches of Los Angeles. David Hasselhoff's star stayed high in the sky thanks to "Baywatch," and many of his co-stars -- notably Pamela Anderson -- became world-famous.

"Baywatch" debuted in 1989 and ran a powerful 241 episodes over 11 seasons, finally drawing to a close in 2001. The final two seasons were relocated to Hawai'i, and the title of the show was changed to "Baywatch: Hawaii," even though it retained the same cast and premise.

Weirdly, as soon as "Baywatch" ended, its cultural clout dried up. "Baywatch" was almost instantly seen as a curio of the 1990s, and 2000s audiences...

The Lord of the Rings (1978)
The sci-fi/fantasy genre has hit an all-time high with numerous new movies and shows. Epic sagas like Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones have proven that viewers want to see more. Which sci-fi/fantasy series from the 1980s are due for a revival?

5 One-Joke Premises That ‘SNL’ Ran Into the Ground
Image
No Saturday Night Live character of recent vintage gets under my skin quite like Domingo, the gyrating Marcello Hernandez creation who cheats with Chloe Fineman when hubby Andrew Dismukes’ back is turned. The first Domingo sketch was fine but forgettable, but now he returns every few weeks to have his way with Fineman once again. Blame TikTok, since the sketch lends itself to memeable dance shorts that make up for the sketches’ inability to extend the original cuckold joke.

Redditors agree, as Domingo got multiple nominations and scores of votes in a recent r/LiveFromNewYork thread that asked the question, “What are some top examples of a joke getting stretched too thin?” But Domingo had plenty of company, mostly from SNL recurring characters that repeated the same catchphrases over and over again. Here are five of the most upvoted nominations for SNL sketches that ran a single joke into the ground…...

‘The Spies Among Us’ Shows a Victim Talking to Ex-Stasi Officers, Taking You Inside a Surveillance State
Image
Forget 1984! You don’t usually get a non-fiction look behind the curtain of the state security and secret police apparatus in a dictatorship. The Spies Among Us, a new documentary from Jamie Coughlin Silverman and Gabriel Silverman (the writing duo behind 2018’s TransMilitary which the former also produced and the latter directed), tries to change that. World premiering at the 2025 edition of South by Southwest on Saturday, it is described as “a rare look into the inner workings of a data-driven surveillance state run by one of the most feared secret police forces the world has ever known — East Germany’s Stasi.”

The film follows the personal investigation by Peter Keup, a Stasi victim-turned-historian, into family secrets. His search for answers takes a unique turn when he contacts and meets men who ran the system that tore apart his family in the former German Democratic Republic, including Heinz Engelhardt, the...

“It’s very hard to believe that”: Garth Ennis Believes Marvel Would’ve Ruined R-Rated Story That Was Rumored to Star George Clooney
Image
Garth Ennis, the celebrated comic book creator behind The Boys and Marvel’s Fury, has cast doubt on the long-standing rumor that George Clooney turned down the role of Nick Fury due to Ennis’ controversial 2001 miniseries. In an interview with Comic Book Herald, Ennis expressed skepticism about whether Clooney had ever read Fury and questioned whether Marvel would have adapted his R-rated take on the character had a film materialized.

And while Samuel L. Jackson gave a new lease of life to the character, Clooney is undoubtedly a face fans will love to see in the MCU. The role of Fury, however, may never have been the ideal for the Ocean’s star.

Norm Macdonald’s Favorite ‘Weekend Update’ Targets to Roast That Weren’t O.J.
Image
During his time as host of SNL’s Weekend Update, Norm Macdonald’s favorite person to ridicule, of course, was O.J. Simpson, which he’d pay the ultimate price for. Okay, maybe not the “ultimate price” according to O.J.’s definition, but Macdonald did lose his job at SNL because of those jokes.

O.J. wasn’t Macdonald’s only punching bag though, as he had a few other recurring characters he loved to take it to. Here are five of them…

5 David Hasselhoff

Every chance Macdonald got to bring up the name “David Hasselhoff,” he took it. It wasn’t even that he’d ridicule Hasselhoff, Macdonald just loved the running gag where he’d say, “Which once again proves my theory: Germans love David Hasselhoff.”

Which, of course, they do, as has been statistically proven.

4 Hillary Clinton

Clinton was a frequent target of Macdonald’s, including references to her being the “First Bitch.

When Emily Blunt’s Kids Weren’t Interested In Her Movies Until Jungle Cruise Changed Everything
Image
Emily Blunt Jungle Cruise Kids (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Okay, hold up. Emily Blunt scared the living daylights out of us in The Girl on the Train and A Quiet Place? Yeah, her kids weren’t interested in her movies. No, seriously. They had zero interest…until Jungle Cruise hit their screens.

Blunt dropped the truth bomb during an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan, saying her two daughters, Hazel and Violet (aged 7 and 4 at the time), weren’t exactly lining up to watch mom’s blockbuster roles. But when Jungle Cruise came around, things got real. “Interestingly, this has been the only trailer they have watched multiple times,” she said.

Now, let’s talk about why. In Jungle Cruise, Blunt plays Dr. Lily Houghton, a badass early-20th-century scientist on a wild quest to find the Tree of Life in the Amazon. She’s not alone, though. She’s got riverboat captain Frank Wolff,...

Why Elizabeth Olsen Is Ready To Move On From Scarlet Witch & What’s Next For Her: ‘Calling Kevin Feige Every Day With Ideas’
Image
Elizabeth Olsen, Scarlet Witch (Photo Credit – Facebook)

Elizabeth Olsen isn’t exactly crying over spilt WandaVision magic; she’s ready to move on from the whole Scarlet Witch gig. After nearly a decade of wielding chaotic power, throwing hexes, and bringing the multiverse to its knees, she’s officially hit pause on playing Wanda Maximoff. “No, I don’t [miss it],” Olsen bluntly confessed during a chat with Meghann Fahy for Variety’s Actors on Actors. Straight to the point, huh?

It’s been almost 10 years since Olsen first flexed those mutant powers in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, followed by blockbuster hits like Avengers: Endgame and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. And don’t forget WandaVision, where she flipped the superhero TV game on its head, completely changing the MCU landscape.

But here’s the thing: after all that, Olsen is fantastic at taking a break from the iconic red cloak and chaos magic.

When Reese Witherspoon Revealed Her Assault Experience At 16 & The Deep Anger She Felt At Hollywood’s Silence
Image
Reese Witherspoon Assault Story ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Reese Witherspoon once shared a mind-wrenching truth about her early Hollywood days. At just 16, she was assaulted by a film director. But that’s not all; she felt “anger… at the agents and producers” who made silence a condition of her work.

Witherspoon alluded to this in a powerful speech at the Elle Women in Hollywood event, opening up about a chapter she’d long kept under wraps. “I wish I could tell you that that was an isolated incident in my career, but sadly, it wasn’t,” she admitted. Her words hit hard, especially as Hollywood reckoned with its dark underbelly during the Harvey Weinstein fallout.

The Oscar-winning actress didn’t dive into specifics about her teenage experience, but she confessed to enduring “multiple other experiences of harassment and sexual assault” throughout her career. Despite years of silence, something about this moment,...

When Leonardo DiCaprio Nearly Joined Baywatch—Why David Hasselhoff Stopped It From Happening
Image
Leonardo DiCaprio Baywatch Story (Photo Credit – Facebook)

Did you know Leonardo DiCaprio nearly joined Baywatch? Yep, Hasselhoff’s decision kept him out of the iconic red swimsuit.

While talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Baywatch producers Michael Berk and Douglas Schwartz spilled the tea about what could have been. DiCaprio, then just a 15 y/o rising star, was ready to dive in as the son of Hasselhoff’s Mitch Buchannon. “We actually had DiCaprio ready to be cast,” Berk shared, setting the scene for a beachside drama that almost had Leo in its lifeguard lineup.

But, plot twist! Hasselhoff wasn’t sold on the idea. “David thought he was too old to play his son,” Schwartz explained, adding that Hasselhoff feared the casting would make him look older. Yeah, the Hoff wasn’t ready to be out-shined by a younger Leo. So, they gave the role to Jeremy Jackson, who was six years Leo’s junior.

‘Pee-wee as Himself’ Would Like You to Meet the Man Behind the Bow Tie

The man staring into the camera is not Pee-wee Herman. He may look a little like him, kinda sorta sound like him, have that same sly, agent-of-chaos-reporting-for-duty-sir smirk. But he is not the man in the tight gray flannel suit, the one who went from cult-figure famous to beloved by millions. “Hi, I’m Paul Reubens, on the set of the untitled Paul Reubens documentary,” he says, speaking directly into the camera. Should you think he takes this too seriously, the character actor with the impressive IMDb page launches into...

Jason Schwartzman Almost Played Jake Gyllenhaal's Best Role
Image
Donnie Darko is an unforgettable 2000s cult classic, and it's hard to imagine the film as anything other than it is. But Jason Schwartzman (best known for playing Gideon in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) actually almost played Jake Gyllenhaal’s most iconic role. Donnie Darko is a 25-year-old independent production and writer-director Richard Kelly's debut feature. This, combined with how unconventional the story is, made it hard to finance the film initially. But igniting the interest of actors like Jason Schwartzman and Drew Barrymore (who plays Ms. Pomeroy) attracted investors.

The movie had financing and were ready to start production when Jason Schwartzman dropped out and Jake Gyllenhaal stepped in. Other than Schwartzman as Donnie Darko, another surprising casting possibility was David Hasselhoff as Jim Cunningham instead of Patrick Swayze. Ultimately, the final cast chosen for Donnie Darko was perfect for it. Although it still needed a push...

Baywatch Cast & Character Guide: What The Actors Are Up To Now
Image
The 2017 Baywatch cast features a mix of world-famous movie stars and promising newcomers at the time, and they've all followed up with some huge projects. Baywatch marked a major cinematic reboot of the classic television series that dominated screens in the 1990s. The film infused the original's campy charm with a modern twist. It not only aimed to capture the essence of the beloved series but also sought to broaden its appeal to a new generation. With its mix of action, comedy, and a hint of nostalgia, Baywatch offered a fresh take on the iconic show.

A significant aspect of the reboot's appeal lay in its star-studded cast. The film featured a mix of established and rising actors, each bringing their unique flair to the characters. This casting decision was pivotal in reimagining the series for a contemporary audience, and while it is considered one of the worst movies based on TV shows,...

10 Marvel Movie Characters Who Deserve Their MCU Chance Before The Multiverse Saga Ends
Image
The long history of Marvel movies means that there are several characters who deserve a chance to be redeemed before the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Multiverse Saga. The movies of the MCU have introduced many Marvel heroes to the screen, but characters from the comics were also adapted to film before the franchise was created. In fact, even the years since the inception of the MCU have seen Marvel movie heroes appear, although they are rarely able to replicate the success of Marvel’s flagship franchise.

The MCU’s movie timeline has seen the establishment of the Multiverse, with Post-Endgame entries into the franchise exploring alternate realities and introducing many variants of existing characters and those from other franchises. Some of these have offered cameo returns for past Marvel movie heroes, offering a chance at redemption for missed opportunity castings or otherwise unfulfilled potential. With that in mind,...

The 10 Most Common Tropes In The Star Trek Franchise
Image
You know the familiar Star Trek lines. "He's dead, Jim!" "Highly illogical." "Make it so!" We even know "Beam me up, Scotty," a line never actually uttered as such on the show but trademarked for merchandising anyway. What about the plot tropes? You may know them too, but you might not think you do. On the surface, many Star Trek shows across the franchise's history seem very different, from the war footing of "Deep Space Nine" to the comedy-of-the-awkward stylings of the "Lower Decks" team.

Just as Star Wars needs its lightsabers, clones, and stormtroopers, though, so too does Star Trek need its familiar tropes. When it comes to the best of them, they've aged like fine wine from the time of James T. Kirk and Christopher Pike, to, well, the time of the newly recast James T. Kirk and Christopher Pike. In between, the likes of Jean-Luc Picard, Benjamin Sisko,...

10 Worst Castings In Non-mcu Marvel Movies, Ranked
Image
Marvel movies don't always get their casting dead-on, especially when it comes to films that were before the advent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Pre-mcu Marvel movies were the Wild West of early superhero blockbusters. While the Fox X-Men movies had already established themselves as a powerful franchise, other one-off Marvel outings didn't leave as lasting an impression. Even since the dominance of the MCU, the Sony Spider-Man universe has struggled to step out from their shadow.

Throughout all of these films, several egregious casting mistakes have hindered the success of many films. Sometimes, assigned actors simply haven't been able to capture the essence of a given comic book character, not giving the role the passion it deserves or having the enthusiasm to work with the material. In other cases, certain casting choices are diametrically opposed misfires that can outdo the likes of the McU's worst casting choices.
