As those in attendance at last week’s CinemaCon saw, there’s a lot to look forward to when it comes to Edgar Wright’s remake of The Running Man. Starring Glen Powell in the role first held by Arnold Schwarzenegger back in Paul Michael Glaser’s 1987 adaptation of the Stephen King novel, the movie has been building plenty of anticipation. Set in a dystopian future, the story follows a man named Ben Richards (Powell), who agrees to participate in a reality competition survival show that sees him pursued by hunters. Keeping the folks back at home entertained will be Colman Domingo’s Bobby Thompson, who hosts the family-favorite TV show. From the first teaser we saw last week, Domingo’s character is flashy, over-the-top, and downright entertaining — precisely the personality you’d tune into see week in and week out.

Before Glen Powell could take on the thrilling, high-stakes role in the 2025 remake of The Running Man, there was one key person he needed to have on his side: Arnold Schwarzenegger. As a reboot of the 1987 thriller, Powell certainly had to seek the blessing of the man who defined the role for a generation.
As the star of the original film, Schwarzenegger still casts a long shadow over the upcoming remake. To ensure the Terminator legend was on board, Powell turned to a personal connection, and it led to a conversation between the two actors.

The 1987 adaptation of The Running Man is coming to Paramount+ this week.
The original film adaptation of Steven King's 1982 novel The Running Man is coming to Paramount+ on April 1st. The 1987 film, directed by Paul Michael Glaser, starred Hollywood icon Arnold Schwarzenegger in addition to María Conchita Alonso, Richard Dawson, Yaphet Kotto, and Jesse Ventura. The film was met with mixed reviews from critics, sitting at 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, and was a moderate box office success, grossing $38.1 million on a budget of $27 million.
The dystopian thriller novel, written under King's pen name "Richard Bachman," was set in an alternate version of the United States. The novel takes place in 2025, while the 1987 film took place somewhere between 2017 and 2019. The film was notably a much more straightforward action film than the original novel's plot. The film followed Ben Richards, a government scapegoat forced onto a sadistic game show known as The Running Man.

Darren Aronofsky is circling to direct Netflix’s Cujo film, based on the novel by Stephen King.
Deadline first reported the news of the film adaptation , with Roy Lee attached to produce in the deal made last week.
The 1981 novel was originally adapted into a thriller film in 1983 starring Dee Wallace as a mother protecting her sone from a 200-pound St. Bernard that turned rabid after being bit by a bat. The formerly friendly hound transformed into one of cold calculation that left a trail of bodies in its wake.
The climactic scene in that film took place when Wallace’s mother and her son face the difficult decision of battling heatstroke in a car that won’t start or confronting the big, rabid dog waiting for them outside the small vehicle.
Aronofsky’s more recent projects include Postcard from Earth (2023) and The Whale (2022) starring Brendan Fraser...

Edgar Wright has been chatting about his upcoming The Running Man movie, and whether it’s more Stephen King than Schwarzenegger.
Ever since Last Night In Soho director Edgar Wright announced that his next film would be an adaptation of The Running Man, speculation has been rife that it will be markedly different from the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie of the same name. Full of entertaining action, it ramped up the camp while also leaning into the pomp and bombast of American game shows.
The Paul Michael Glaser-directed dystopian action flick sidelined some of Stephen King’s source novel’s themes of alienation and media-induced hatred, or at least refined them significantly into something more digestible for a 1980s popcorn-munching audience. So instead, we got Arnie in a Lycra Adidas jumpsuit and appearances from pro-wrestlers.
Many have speculated that Wright’s film will instead follow King’s novel more closely...

And he will continue that streak, it seems, in the latest Edgar Wright project, a remake of the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film, The Running Man, which began filming this week in London.
In new Daily Mail images from the set, Powell is looking retro-futuristic as he makes his way through crowds of extras in front of the iconic Battersea Power Station in London, England.

I must admit, I didn’t know what to do with Todd Phillips’s “Joker” at first. The polarizing supervillain drama, based on Batman’s greatest nemesis, dazzled many viewers with its epic photography, its righteous indignation at broken social systems, and Joaquin Phoenix’s eerie and fragile performance as Arthur Fleck. But beneath all that there was a frustrating lack of specificity about what it was actually angry at, and a distracting lack of originality, since it cribbed wholesale from several obvious sources — especially Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver” and “The King of Comedy.”
It took some time but I finally found where I stand with “Joker,” and it’s halfway between the praise and the criticism. All the film’s fine qualities and all of its deficiencies are in a symbiotic relationship, and the derivativeness is their connective tissue. After all, “Joker” is the story of a failed...

Edgar Wright is officially making The Running Man, a new version of Stephen King’s novel last adapted in 1987. Here’s how it could differ from that earlier one:
Most readers would likely agree that The Running Man isn’t the best of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s cycle of action movie vehicles from the 1980s and early 1990s, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t memorable. If you’ve seen it, you can probably quote a line or two (“Sub-Zero… now plain zero!”), or remember Richard Dawson’s captivatingly oily turn as game show host, Jack Killian.
You might recall the almost musical note that one of the villains, Buzzsaw (Gus Rethwisch), manages to hit when a chainsaw’s applied to his nether regions. Or even remember the bafflement of seeing rockers Mick Fleetwood and Dweezil Zappa show up.
Directed by Paul Michael Glaser and written by Steven E de Souza,...

Well, I warned you. Kind of. While today’s story is released with Stephen King’s name plastered all over it, at the time of its release The Running Man was under the name of Richard Bachman, who had some dark stories attached to him. I was planning on doing this for a while but with the news that Edgar Wright is going to tackle the story in a new version that hopefully is closer to the book, it makes too much sense to talk about this dystopian horror now. While it’s a stalwart of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s catalogue of action, especially that range from 1987 to 1991, it’s not often looked at as a premiere Stephen King adaptation. It’s not expressly seen as horror but when it gets boiled down, both book and film, it’s horrific what happens in both stories and what’s going on in the worlds of both medias.

Edgar Wright's The Running Man remake aims to fix the mistakes of the previous adaptation, focusing on being true to the book. The Running Man remake by Edgar Wright will draw inspiration from the original Stephen King novel, not Schwarzenegger's film. Intro: At the time of writing this episode of Arnie Revisited, it’s just been confirmed that Hollywood is once again scouring popular IP with the upcoming reboot of The Running Man from Edgar Wright, with rising star Glen Powell attached to the project. The Top Gun: Maverick actor is certainly hot property right now, having just cosied up to Sydney Sweeney in Anyone But You. However, it was another actor, whose star was crashing through the sky in the 80s, who first took on the adaptation of Stephen King’s short story, which was written under his Richard Bachman pen name.
Arnie had just battled camouflaged alien hunters in Predator, released in June 1987, and the same year saw him take on another action sci-fi project, albeit this time with less aliens but similarly memorable action and one-liners. It was quite a departure from the original short story, but the...

Paramount Pictures is remaking The Running Man with Glen Powell as the star, anticipated to be his most exciting project. The remake is directed by Edgar Wright and co-written by Wright and Michael Bacall. A couple of Powell's other future films are Hit Man and Twisters.
Paramount Pictures announced they are producing a remake of The Running Man with Glen Powell as the star, making it the actor's most highly-anticipated project despite his already-exciting current lineup of future movies. The 1987 dystopian action film, directed by Paul Michael Glaser and written by Steven E. de Souza, was loosely based on the Stephen King book of the same name and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as the leading man — Captain Benjamin "Ben" Richards. The Running Man failed to impress at the box office, only grossing $38 million against a $27 million budget, and critics gave the movie mixed reviews.

Glen Powell, Hollywood’s favorite rising star, has nabbed his first action vehicle.
The actor, who cemented his leading-man status with the hit romantic comedy Anyone but You, will star in Paramount’s The Running Man, a new adaptation of the Stephen King novel that Edgar Wright will direct.
Wright, who’s been attached to the project since 2021, is also producing along with partner Nira Park and genre mainstay Simon Kinberg.
King’s Running Man, published in 1982 and written under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, was set in 2025 in an America under a totalitarian regime that uses violent game shows to placate the disenfranchised masses. One desperate man, needing money for his sick daughter, joins the most popular show, The Running Man, in which teams of killers hunt down contestants. The longer one survives, the more money that person makes. But as the game show’s producers and killers will find out,...

Stephen King is inarguably one of the most adapted authors in the world. The reigning overlord of the horror genre has seen his work translated to film and TV almost continually since his first novel, Carrie, was adapted in 1976. While he’s had his ups and downs in terms of success in those venues, it’s almost a certainty that the King adaptations will continue as the author himself keeps working well into his sixth decade as a published writer.
Naturally, most of the adaptations of King’s work focus on his horror or horror-adjacent output: just about everything from 1,000-page behemoths like the post-apocalyptic The Stand to 10-page short stories like the single-setting monster tale “The Boogeyman” have found their way to the screen. But while filmmakers and creators gravitate toward the King material that they think will scare audiences – after all, that’s his brand – some of the...
