4K Uhd Blu-ray Review: Julian Schnabel’s ‘Basquiat’ on the Criterion Collection
Image
Julian Schnabel’s Basquiat is often at war with itself. At times, it effortlessly captures Jean-Michel Basquiat (Jeffrey Wright) and the Manhattan art world in which he flourished with bracing authenticity, only for it to become weighed down by biopic clichés that flatten out its characterizations. For every patient sequence that sits back and allows the audience to observe Basquiat at work, carefully detailing his process, there are two more that feel like they were ripped straight from the artist biopic playbook.

As great a song as Modern Lovers’s “Girlfriend” is, playing it over the scene in which Basquiat meets soon-to-be girlfriend Gina (Claire Forlani)—a composite of Basquiat’s real-life girlfriends, including Suzanne Mallouk and Madonna—is impossibly on the nose. And that scene is followed up by another in which Basquiat and his best friend, Benny (Benicio del Toro), see a character on TV utter what would...

Ben Stiller’s Superhero Comedy 'Mystery Men' Is Streaming for Free
Image
The superhero has now taken over cinema thanks to the likes of the MCU and the SnyderVerse but, believe it or not, there was a time when this wasn’t the case. While superhero movies were more of a rarity, a unique send-up of the genre did emerge way, way back in 1999. And it was well ahead of its time...as the divisive response proves. Starring an all-star cast that includes Ben Stiller and William H. Macy, Mystery Men is now headed to free streaming. And, perhaps in this golden age of superhero movies, the comedy can finally get the recognition it deserves.

Directed by Kinka Usher in his feature-length directorial debut, and written by Neil Cuthbert, Mystery Men is loosely based on the "Flaming Carrot Comics" by Bob Burden. Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, William H. Macy, Greg Kinnear, Claire Forlani, Kel Mitchell, Paul Reubens,...

Jason Statham Starred In One Of The Worst Video Game Movie Flops Of All Time
Image
Director Uwe Boll has a reputation as one of the worst film directors of all time. In the mid-2000s, he helmed a string of well-publicized but critically savaged video game adaptations that immediately sunk to the bottom of cineastes' estimations. In 2003, he made "House of the Dead," and followed that in 2005 with both "Alone in the Dark" and "BloodRayne." He chased those with "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale," "BloodRayne 2: Deliverance," and "Postal" all in 2007, and capped off his run in 2008 with "Far Cry." Fans of the games on which those films are based were incensed that Boll should so clumsily handle the source material, and fans of the cinematic medium were incensed that

Despite his critical reputation, Boll has remained prolific, sometimes helming multiple pictures a year. He directed "First Shift" and "Bandidos" in 2024, and is set to release "Run" in 2025.

Stars: Skeet Ulrich, Claire Forlani, Thomas Jane, Theo Rossi, Devon Bostick, Ashley Moore, Rebecca Gibel, Samantha Gordon, Thomas Kee | Written by Alex Runnels | Directed by Mackenzie Munro

Salvation – which comes from director Mackenzie Munro (Boot Camp) and stars Skeet Ulrich, Claire Forlani and Thomas Jane – delves into a world of faith, deception, and redemption with a gripping narrative that is both unsettling and thought-provoking. The story follows a troubled foster child sent to live with a seemingly kind couple in rural Tennessee. However, as she integrates into their lives, she uncovers dark secrets tied to a snake-handling worship community, which sets the stage for a tense and unpredictable journey.

Skeet Ulrich delivers a standout performance, bringing remarkable depth and complexity to his role. Clare Forlani and Thomas Jane also excel, contributing significantly to the film’s taut and uneasy atmosphere. Munro’s direction is highly effective, masterfully building suspense and maintaining a steady,...

2020 Airplane Thriller With 80% Rt Becomes Global Netflix Hit
Image
An airplane thriller with 80% on Rotten Tomatoes becomes a global hit on Netflix more than four years after its debut. Though it arrived very late in the year, the airplane thriller premise received a boost with Carry-On. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, with T. J. Fixman writing the script. The story centers on a Tsa officer who's blackmailed into allowing a nerve agent on board a flight during Christmas Eve. The cast of Carry-On is led by Taron Egerton, Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, and Jason Bateman.

By the start of 2025, Carry-On demolished records to become the fifth-most-watched English-language Netflix Original of all time. That data will soon be backed up by Nielsen's streaming charts. But the initial response underlines the holiday-themed thriller struck a nerve with audiences. Another plane-centric suspense saga is catching on with subscribers, albeit four years after it originally premiered on a rival platform.

"We Just Lost Her": Kevin Smith on Hearing Ellen DeGeneres Walked Out of Chasing Amy
Image
Writer/producer/director/actor Kevin Smith is behind the cult classic movies like Clerks, Dogma, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy, an LGBTQ+ film. Smith, in the documentary Chasing Chasing Amy, revealed that one famous talk show host walked out of a screening of Chasing Amy, per People.

“The biggest blowback, God’s truth, that I heard, felt, and was told about was when they told me that Ellen (DeGeneres) and (then-partner) Anne Heche went to see Chasing Amy, and it was reported that they walked out in the first half hour,” Smith revealed in the Sav Rodgers documentary. DeGeneres came out as a lesbian the same year Chasing Amy was released.

“And us being like, ‘Well, that’s the most famous lesbian in the world. We just lost her. That means we’re never getting on The Ellen Show,'” Smith said. People reports that representatives for DeGeneres did not immediately return requests for comment.

Jason Statham rarely steps out of his comfort zone, but despite what detractors might say, his approach has worked incredibly well for him. In 2024, he is still one of the world’s most bankable stars, and he is unlikely to slow down anytime soon. 99% of Statham’s movies involve him playing a man with a gun with fists as additional weapons. Cruel Intentions Stars Jon Tenney & Claire Forlani On Season 1's Parental Schemes
Image
Prime Video's TV reboot of Cruel Intentions follows the students of Manchester College, an elite academy populated by manipulators, sociopaths, and their unwitting victims. Based on the cult classic 1999 film of the same name, as well as the original 1782 novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Cruel Intentions uses humor and its sharp satirical edge to cut through to the heart of its characters, users who don't care how many lives they ruin in their petty pursuit of political power.

Most of the Cruel Intentions cast are hot college students, but exceptions include Jon Tenney and Claire Forlani, who star as hot middle-aged parents. Tenney plays Congressman Russell, the father of Scott Russell (Khobe Clarke), while Forlani plays Claudia, the mother of Caroline (Sarah Catherine Hook) and stepmother to Lucien (Zac Burgess). While ostensibly the adults in the room, that doesn't necessarily mean they're more evolved than their children.

Gen Z Might Be Prudes, but ‘Cruel Intentions’ TV Creators Refused to Shy Away From Love Scenes and Horniness: ‘Sex Is Alive and Well’
Image
Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for “Cruel Intentions,” both the 1999 film and the entire first season of the new Prime Video series.”

Twenty-five years later, “Cruel Intentions” will still make you blush.

The 1999 film about high-society stepsiblings Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe) and Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) curing their privileged boredom by corrupting the last shreds of innocence in their peers feels both ahead of its time and like a movie that could never be made today. Littered with culturally insensitive language and driven by unbridled, often taboo sexuality, it was a cultural shock to the system in the waning days of the last millennium.

Replicating even a shred of that ethos was one of the many challenges facing this new version of the story. But perhaps the tallest order for “Cruel Intentions” was making a timeless tale of striving for power through sex feel relevant and revolutionary in the era of Gen Z,...

‘Cruel Intentions’ Sarah Catherine Hook & Zac Burgess On Finding “Humanity” In Their Roles & Who “Was Not Happy” About That Recreated Kiss

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details about Season 1 of Cruel Intentions.

Although Sarah Catherine Hook and Zac Burgess play conniving step-siblings with questionable boundaries in Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Prime Video‘s Cruel Intentions reimagining, this duo isn’t your mother’s Kathryn and Sebastian.

Ahead of the eight-episode series’ Thursday premiere on the platform, the actors behind Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Belmont discussed the “collaborative experience” of creating their characters with showrunners Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher, as well as pilot director Adam Arkin.

Every Jay & Silent Bob Movie In Chronological Order
Image
Jay and Silent Bob movies have seen the iconic stoner duo playing supporting characters as well as leading their own movies, and despite the madcap absurdism, they do have something of a continuity and chronological order. Writer/director Kevin Smith became an indie sensation thanks to his micro-budget debut Clerks in 1994. That was also the movie that introduced the world to Jay, a foul-mouthed, obnoxious, weed-loving punk, and his mostly mute friend Silent Bob. The popularity of these characters would lead to them appearing in several other movies that followed.

Long before the MCU, Smith created his own cinematic universe with the View Askewniverse, with Jay and Silent Bob as the common thread through all the movies. The characters have appeared in cartoon series and even shows and movies outside of Smith's own cinematic universe, but the Jay and Silent Bob movies of the View Askewniverse show the characters' wild...

Cruel Intentions TV Review: Prime Video’s remake is pretty awful
Image
Plot: Follows the elite students of Manchester College, a Washington, D.C.-adjacent university, where reputation means everything, fraternities and sororities are the gold standard, and two ruthless step-siblings, Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Belmont, will do anything to stay on top of the cutthroat social hierarchy. After a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Greek Life system, they’ll do whatever is necessary to preserve their power and reputation – even if that means seducing Annie Grover, the daughter of the Vice President of the United States. Hearts will be broken, loyalties will be tested, and secrets will be revealed in this modern-day royal court that is Manchester College.

Review: Since the 1988 film version of Dangerous Liaisons starring Glenn Close, Michelle Pfieffer, John Malkovich, and Uma Thurman, there have been ten adaptations of the eighteenth-century bestseller by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos including a 2022 series that aired on Starz. The most popular...

‘Cruel Intentions’ Review: Amazon Remake Dishes Out Liaisons Too Sizzle-Free to Feel Dangerous
Image
Amazon’s new Cruel Intentions television series is completely pointless, which isn’t the worst of sins, but isn’t much of a virtue either.

Roger Kumble’s 1999 film of the same title took Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ frequently adapted Les Liaisons Dangereuses and gave it a modern spin which, if nothing else, understood a lot of what was so pointedly twisty about it. The movie delivered some satisfying, dirty fun in a tight 97 minutes, with a spectacular cast that easily smoothed over any bumps in the thematically muddled story.

Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman’s Amazon series takes the potent premise, with its backstabbing and sexual hijinks, and mostly just manages to stretch it out across an eight-episode season — and presumably beyond, since very little is resolved by the finale. Its attempts to update the already updated tale are mostly hollow, and its ensemble of pretty young actors mostly forgettable.

‘Cruel Intentions’ Review: Prime Video Reboot Is Too Boring to Offend
Image
The 18th century French novel “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” has withstood dozens of adaptations to stage and screen, including the prestigious 1988 film “Dangerous Liaisons” and the cheesy yet beloved 1999 teen film “Cruel Intentions.”

With Prime Video’s new eight-part “Cruel Intentions” series remake, author Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ story finally hits the wall. Here, both setting and story seem outdated, with the writers’ bids to stay true to skeevier elements of the novel and (especially) 1999 movie conflicting with attempts to update storylines for a modern audience.

The show opens at a stately, vaguely Southern-looking mansion filled with overdressed young women — a promising start for fans of the similarly sorority-set “Scream Queens” or of “American Horror Story: Coven,” or even “The Bachelor.”

But the new “Cruel Intentions” does not yield any supernatural or crime thriller chills, or even enough backstabbing among romantic rivals to inspire us to pick a side. Instead, it...

Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Sarah Michelle Gellar in Cruel Intentions (1999)
Cruel Intentions | Trailer released for Prime Video television adaptation
Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Sarah Michelle Gellar in Cruel Intentions (1999)
The small screen adaptation of 1999 teen drama Cruel Intentions will stream on Prime Video next month. Here’s the trailer.

Cruel Intentions, written and directed by Roger Kumble, is a seminal teen film of the 1990s, planting the plot of Dangerous Liasons firmly in late twentieth century American youth culture. It boasted star making turns from Selma Blair, Ryan Phillipe and Reese Witherspoon. It’s also the film that helped launch the big screen career of Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Now, Cruel Intentions is heading to the small screen in a fresh modern take courtesy of Amazon Prime Video. Many versions of a television adaptation have been attempted in the past, including a 2016 pilot which saw Gellar reprise her role, but ultimately none of them gained any traction. A second film, Cruel Intentions 2, was edited together out of two completed episodes of a cancelled television prequel series called...

Jason Stathams Lowest Rated Movie Is as Bad as You Think
Image
Action superstar and Hollywood heavy hitter Jason Statham may be one of the silver screen's most bankable actors, but even he isn't immune to taking on questionable projects and roles. The charismatic performer is one of the film industry's most alluring stars, but back in 2007, Statham headlined one of the cinema's biggest box office blunders and most critically-panned flicks: the fantasy flick In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale, which was an adaptation of the popular video game series.

In the notorious movie, Statham plays a man on a mission as he sets out to get revenge against the evil forces that killed his beloved son and kidnapped his wife, a plot that sounds right up the actor's alley but also takes place in a fantasy world in a medieval kingdom where nefarious creatures run rampant. The adaptation tanked upon its worldwide release and holds just a 4% Rotten Tomatoes score,...

Sarah Michelle Gellar Would Love To Honor Shannen Doherty In Mallrats Sequel
Image
Director Kevin Smith has been wanting to bring a Mallratssequel to the big screen for a while now, but a key figure from the first film is, tragically, no longer with us after the passing of Shannen Doherty following a brave battle with cancer. Despite her passing, Smith has figured out a great way to honor the late actress, and it involves having her best friend, and fellow actress, Sarah Michelle Gellar, stepping into the role the 90210 actress originated, something Gellar is more than happy to do.

Following Smith speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about wanting Gellar to step in for her best friend, the trade posted the story on their Instagram page and the Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress commented on the post by saying, "Here for this idea!!", indicating that she's more than willing to step into the role as a tribute to Doherty. Now that Gellar is on board,...

Sarah Michelle Gellar Up for Filling in for Late Friend Shannen Doherty in Mallrats 2
Image
Filmmaker Kevin Smith has recently been hinting that a sequel to his 1995 movie Mallrats isnt completely out of the question. Per Entertainment Weekly, Smith said he would like Sarah Michelle Gellar to step in for the late Shannen Doherty if a movie was to be made. Within hours of the news, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress commented on social media that shes Here for this idea, of joining the cast of the movie.

Gellar and Doherty had been friends for 30 years, Gellar wrote in a tribute she posted on Instagram to the late actress, who died in July after a long battle with breast cancer. How do you possibly find the right words to sum up 30 years of friendship? I keep reminding myself it only hurts this much because there was so much love, Gellar wrote.

Kevin Smith offered the latest on Twilight of the Mallrats (Mallrats 2), the long-awaited sequel to the 1995 cult film Mallrats, which starred Shannen Doherty, Jason Lee, Claire Forlani, and Jeremy London.

When discussing the potential sequel — that has been in stuck in limbo for years — during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Smith said that after Doherty’s death in July following a battle with cancer, he considered walking away from the project all together. “My first feeling after Shannen passed was like, ‘Well, that’s it,'” he told THR.

Kevin Smith Reveals Plan for Moving Forward With Mallrats 2 Without Shannen Doherty
Image
Kevin Smith's quest to finally realize a sequel to Mallrats has been many years in the making, but after the recent passing of one of the film's stars, the director had paused any further development of Mallrats 2. However, Smith recently revealed a possible solution that would act as a loving tribute to his late friend and collaborator.

Doherty passed away on July 13 after a long battle with cancer, understandably putting any ideas for a sequel out of Smith's mind. At the time of her passing, Smith posted a tribute via his Instagram to his late friend saying that Doherty "was the only reason Mallrats got green-lit in 1995." For a Mallrats sequel to happen, the loss of Doherty had to be acknowledged in some way, possibly excluding her character of Rene entirely. However, Smith appears to have come up with a possible solution, a re-casting that also acts as a loving tribute.

Mallrats 2 Delay Explained: Kevin Smith Gives Latest Update On Comedy Sequel
Image
Director Kevin Smith provides an update on the possibility of making Mallrats 2, a follow-up to his 90s cult classic. Written and directed by Smith, Mallrats was released in 1995 as the follow-up to his wildly successful comedy classic Clerks, and starred Jason Lee, Jeremy London, Shannen Doherty, Michael Rooker, and Claire Forlani. While the movie was not a box office success, it was popular on home video, and, like its predecessor, went on to develop a cult following.

In an interview with Deadline, Smith discusses the possibility of making Mattrats 2. The Chasing Amy director and New Jersey native previously planned to make the movie before Clerks III, even at one point announcing a 10-episode Mallrats TV show that never materialized. Speaking of his continued desire to see a Mallrats sequel, the 54-year-old discusses the challenges of getting the movie made with Universal, and his desire to make it independently. Check out Smith's comments below:

Kevin Smith Will Make Mallrats 2 Even if He Has to Finance It
Image
Kevin Smith is expecting another reasonable hit with The 4:30 Movie, but many fans have been wondering whether he will ever get to make his long-gestating sequel to Mallrats. Talk of Mallrats 2has been ongoing for a number of years now, but as well as there being little movement on the films development, the death of original star Shannen Doherty earlier this year made the impossible task seem almost even less likely than it was previously. It seems that was also how Smith originally felt too.

In a new interview with Deadline promoting The 4:30 Movie, Smith addressed the chances of Mallrats 2 ever being made, starting with how the death of Doherty seemed to be the end of the road for the sequel. He said:

"So, with Shannens passing, at that point, I was like, 'Well, I guess that kind of closes the book for us. But then a couple of weeks ago,...

Jason Statham's Worst Movie Has The Best Cast He Ever Worked With Including The Expendables
Image
Jason Statham is no stranger to working with some seriously talented people, but perhaps the most impressive cast he's ever featured in bizarrely came in his worst-ever movie. With a track record in action franchises like The Fast and the Furious and The Expendables, Statham has arguably forged his reputation by augmenting ensembles. And yet, while these movies have become some of Statham's best-known releases, one oft-forgotten film still reigns supreme as the pinnacle of Jason Statham's screen collaborations.

It speaks to Statham's strengths as a performer that he is capable of shining both as a solo lead and a supporting player in a sprawling cast. Even his early career before he became an action superstar was defined by performances in projects like Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch: both movies that rely on extensive personnel and surprise cameos to succeed. And yet, even with this history,...

It Ends with Us has generated a great deal of buzz. Being adapted from the beloved yet controversial book of the same name by Colleen Hoover, It Ends with Us is a surprise box office hit, grossing over $50 million in its opening weekend, exceeding tracking expectations. Plenty of elements played into the movie's big opening, but one was buzz about behind-the-scenes conflict with star Blake Lively and director/co-star Justin Baldoni, as many noted neither did promotion for the film together and were not photographed at the film's world premiere. Some reports suggest that Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, overtook the production, taking control away from Baldoni, while other reports paint Baldoni as difficult to work with.

Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Sarah Michelle Gellar in Cruel Intentions (1999)
Cruel Intentions | TV adaptation heading to Prime Video
Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Sarah Michelle Gellar in Cruel Intentions (1999)
The small screen adaptation of Cruel Intentions will stream on Prime Video, and details have landed for the show.

Cruel Intentions is a seminal teen film of the 1990s, planting the story of Dangerous Liasons firmly in late twentieth century youth culture, with star making turns from Selma Blair, Ryan Phillipe and Reese Witherspoon

It’s also the film that helped launch the big screen career of Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Now, Cruel Intentions is heading to the small screen in a fresh modern take (we assume). Many versions of a television adaptation have been attempted in the past, including a 2016 pilot which saw Gellar reprise her role, but ultimately none of them were commissioned.

At one stage, a television version did see the light of day, but it was released as Cruel Intentions 2, thanks to some hasty re-editing in post-production (and it didn’t share the lead cast of the film).

Anyway,...
