Miguel Ferrer in Crossing Jordan (2001)

Trivia

Miguel Ferrer

Edit
  • Was longtime friends with Carrie Fisher whom he encouraged and helped prepare for her Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) audition. Their mothers (Debbie Reynolds and Rosemary Clooney) were known for their performances in such hit musicals as Singin' in the Rain (1952) and White Christmas (1954).
  • Was very close to his cousin George Clooney.
  • Was good friends with actress Dominique Dunne and Brandon Lee; he served as a pallbearer at both their funerals.
  • Collector of vintage comic books; Batman was always his hero.
  • Cousin of George Clooney, Cathi Campo and Carlos Campo.
  • Originally pursued a career as a musician. After seeing Little Ricky playing the drums on I Love Lucy (1951), he decided he wanted to learn to play the drums. His father, José Ferrer, who was already an accomplished pianist, encouraged him in this. He would later use this talent when traveling on tour with his mother Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby. It was not until Crosby's death that he decided to pursue acting. His career later came full circle when he worked with Denise Crosby on Crossing Jordan (2001).
  • Two members of his family have set records for memorable firsts among Hispanics. His father José Ferrer was the first Hispanic actor to win an Oscar, for Cyrano de Bergerac (1950). His cousin, Carlos Campo, son of his aunt Betty Clooney, is the first Hispanic President of Regent University.
  • His musical credits included playing drums on Keith Moon's album "Two Sides of the Moon" (1975).
  • Formerly played drums and sang in the Los Angeles band "The Jenerators" with actor and co-founder Bill Mumy.
  • Was a huge fan of author Stephen King, and had appeared in three adaptations of his work: The Night Flier (1997), The Shining (1997) and The Stand (1994). Appropriately, King has made numerous references in his work to The Caine Mutiny (1954), which starred his father José Ferrer.
  • At the 41st Grammy Awards, he was nominated for Best Spoken Word Album for Children in Disney's The Lion King II: Simba's Pride Read-Along (1999).
  • Was in the band Seduction of the Innocent with his friends Bill Mumy and mystery novelist Max Allan Collins. Seduction often performed in and around San Diego Comic-Con, and Ferrer's good friend Brandon Lee would sometimes roadie for the group.
  • In 1954, the year before he was born, his parents appeared in the year's two most successful films. Rosemary Clooney was in the top moneymaker that year White Christmas (1954), while José Ferrer appeared in the second-highest-grossing film The Caine Mutiny (1954).
  • His father was Puerto Rican. His mother had English, German and Irish ancestry.
  • Played the younger version, and his father (José Ferrer), the older version of the same character on Lest We Forget (1981)(#1.10).
  • Following his death, he was interred in San Juan, Puerto Rico's Cementerio Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis. He passed away less than three weeks away from what would have been his 62nd birthday on February 7.
  • He and his cousin George Clooney have both appeared in remakes of films that starred Frank Sinatra. Ferrer had a supporting role in The Manchurian Candidate (2004), while Clooney took over Sinatra's role in the Ocean's Eleven (2001) trilogy. He has also parodied George's role on Robot Chicken (2005).
  • Was the oldest of five children of José Ferrer and Rosemary Clooney. Miguel was followed by Maria Ferrer (born 1956); Gabriel Ferrer, Monsita Ferrer and Rafael Ferrer.
  • Along with Peter Weller, Ronny Cox and Kurtwood Smith, he is one of only four actors from RoboCop (1987) to appear in the "Star Trek" universe. He appeared in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) (his debut cinematic appearance).
  • Also a voice-over actor.
  • Studied acting at the Beverly Hills Playhouse and was also a voice-over actor.
  • Has played the DC comics supervillain, the Weather Wizard, in both animated form (Superman: The Animated Series (1996)) and live-action (Justice League of America (1997)). However, the character was referred to as the Weatherman in the latter production.
  • Father of two sons with Leilani Sarelle, Lukas José Ferrer (b. May 20, 1993) and Rafael Ferrer (b. 1996), and of a third son with Kate Dornan, Jose Robert Ferrer (b. 2004).
  • Made a guest appearance on an episode of the sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun (1996). Series regular Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the grandson of director Michael Gordon, who directed his father José Ferrer in his Oscar-winning role as Cyrano de Bergerac (1950).
  • Made his first film appearance in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), which was directed by Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy. He subsequently directed an episode of Crossing Jordan (2001) that featured a guest appearance by subsequent Spock Zachary Quinto.
  • Brother-in-law of Debby Boone. Ex-brother-law of Meilani Paul and Adrian Paul.
  • Nephew of Nick Clooney, Nina Clooney and Betty Clooney. Half-nephew of Gail Stone.
  • He and Guillaume Depardieu were both the sons of Oscar-nominated actors (José Ferrer and Gérard Depardieu) who have played Cyrano de Bergerac. Both had also played younger versions of one of their father's characters: Miguel on Magnum, P.I. (1980), and Guillaume in "Les Miserables" and "The Count of Monte Cristo". They were also both close friends of an actor who played The Crow: Brandon Lee and Vincent Perez.
  • His breakthrough role in RoboCop (1987) was released just a month after the release of Roxanne (1987). His next prominent role was on Twin Peaks (1990), which premiered shortly after the first European releases of Cyrano de Bergerac (1990). Both films were remakes of Cyrano de Bergerac (1950), which starred his father José Ferrer. David Lynch cast him in Twin Peaks after seeing his performance in Robocop.
  • His father Jose Ferrer passed away on January 26, 1992. Miguel Ferrer passed away on January 19, 2017, just one week away from exactly twenty-five years later.
  • The Monuments Men (2014), featuring his cousin George Clooney and uncle Nick Clooney, opened on his 59th birthday.
  • Miguel O'Hara, the titular hero of Spider-Man 2099, was named after Miguel as his creator Peter David and Miguel had been good friends.
