Sean McNamara’s biopic Reagan moves well beyond hero worship, as it paints the 40th U.S. president as a saint among men. The film opens with Ronald Reagan (Dennis Quaid) quoting his mother via voiceover—“Everything, even seemingly random twists of fate, is all a part of the divine plan”—just as it cuts to a vision of John Hinckley Jr.’s 1981 attempted assassination of the president. The mix of slow-mo re-enactment and archival footage is the first of many bizarre, unintentionally funny moments in a film that’s determined not only to position Reagan as the great man of the second half of the 20th century, but as a man ordained by God to defeat the colossal, religion- and freedom-hating villain of our times: communism.
In an especially strange decision, the story of Reagan’s life is told from the perspective of a fictionalized Kgb agent, Victor Novikov...

Reagan is a sweeping new biopic that tells the story of the late President Ronald Reagan in its entirety. Set to be released in U.S. theaters on August 30, it stars Dennis Quaid, Penelope Ann Miller, Robert Davi, Lesley-Anne Down, and Jon Voight.
Earlier this month, we got to sit down for a second time with Voight (you can check out our previous interview here) to learn how he approached the role of Viktor Petrovich Ivanov, a former Kgb agent who plays a major role in this new biopic.
During our conversation, the legendary Hollywood star broke down his approach to playing the real-life figure, sharing some fascinating insights into how he physically transformed into the Russian.
We also hear from Voight on the challenges of bringing Reagan to the big screen, including the difficulties presented by shooting the movie when the Covid-19 pandemic regularly forced productions to shut down.

“From dusty small-town roots, to the glitter of Hollywood, and then on to commanding the world stage, Reagan is a cinematic journey of overcoming the odds,” the film’s synopsis reads. “Told through the voice of Viktor Petrovich, a former Kgb agent who followed Reagan’s ascent, Reagan captures the indomitable spirit of the American dream.”
Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, the trailer kicks off with Quaid, who portrays Reagan as an older man, saying, “There’s nothing a retired governor can do but a president, now he can do a thing or two.”

Well, the first trailer for Dennis Quaid’s Ronald Reagan biopic has debuted. The actor plays the 40th President of the United States in the feature, which promises to span the major events of Reagan’s life, including his confrontation with childhood bullies, his acting career and time leading the Screen Actors Guild and his ascendant rise in politics bolstered by anti-communist rhetoric. Set to a cover of Tears for Fears’ ’80s hit “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” the trailer tracks how Reagan wanted to rule the free world — and did.
“I was a lifeguard on a river. And I learned how to read the currents — not just the ones on the surface, but also the ones deep underneath the water,” President Reagan says in the trailer, drawing a comparison to his own eye for geopolitical tensions. If anyone is good at spotting hidden meanings in movies, it’s Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino wrote a book of film criticism in which he said one of Elvis Presley’s movies had a rich subtext. The film was helmed by one of the most consequential action movie directors of all time.

Legendary Hollywood men typically stick to specific archetypes when playing the romantic lead in their films. Where Humphrey Bogart was often coarse and cynical with a heart of gold, Cary Grant tended to be debonair and sharp-witted with a mischievous streak. At the peak of his movie stardom, Harrison Ford had a touch of both those gents. He was a cocky scoundrel who bore his skepticism like a shield yet would allow himself to be unguarded and even sweet in the right company. Ford was also just as foxy donning a fedora as he was rocking the adorkable getup of a mild-mannered professor.
After breaking out as the suave cosmic reprobate Han Solo in "Star Wars: A New Hope," Ford co-starred in Jeremy Paul Kagan's 1977 Vietnam War veteran drama, "Heroes" (a film he worked on prior to "A New Hope" reaching theaters), and Guy Hamilton's 1978 "Guns of Navarone" sequel,...

It’s hard to believe that the 1986 supernatural thriller Nomads is the first film directed by John McTiernan, who would leap from this low-budget effort to directing first Predator and then Die Hard, the greatest action movie of all-time and, if we’re being honest with ourselves, one of the best movies ever made in any genre. Nomads is meandering and dreamlike, ponderous and often nonsensical. Die Hard is airtight technical perfection. Nomads plays like the work of an indie filmmaker making an art movie with genre tendencies. Die Hard is expertly directed studio entertainment on a massive scale. The two movies could not be more different. And, yet, somehow Nomads is the movie that gave rise to one of the greatest action directors of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Funny, that.

The directorial debut of the once revered action auteur John McTiernan comes to Blu-ray release, a little known cult favorite known as Nomads. Considering this predates his most lucrative and iconic trio of films, including Predator (1987), Die Hard (1988), and The Hunt for Red October (1990) should be reason enough to revisit the title, even if on the surface it promises to be like any number of forgettable genre titles churned out in the same period. Beyond McTiernan, the film is notable as presenting us with the first starring role of Pierce Brosnan, playing an improbable Frenchman, as well as featuring supporting turns from notable cult figures like Mary Woronov, Frank Doubleday, and Adam Ant. Ultimately, the title’s perplexing and often inexplicable narrative thwarts its overall effectiveness as a thriller, yet McTiernan manages to convey expert skills as a visual artist.
