X-Men (2000) ending explained: How does the first X-Men movie finish?
Image
2000’s X-Men started the epic franchise and a new era of comic book movies, but how did it really end?

Back in 2000, comic book movies were in a downturn with some thinking the genre was dead. Then X-Men came along to revive it. The monster hit not only brought the beloved mutants to life but grounded them in a realistic way to influence scores of other films, including the MCU.

The movie made a star out of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine with a top-notch cast and Bryan Singer’s direction was sensational. It combined into a hit film that was backed by a great storyline.

How does X-Men play out?

The movie focuses on Wolverine as he’s hunted by Magneto (Ian McKellan) and his Brotherhood of Mutants. He and young Rogue (Anna Paquin) are taken in by the X-Men, led by Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) with Cyclops (James Marsden...

Why ABC Cancelled Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital After One Season
Image
Given that he's one of the most popular novelists in the history of American literature, it's not surprising that the novels and short stories of Stephen King have been adapted for film and television myriad times since the publication of his first book, "Carrie," in 1974. Obviously, we're all well aware of the many great movies that have been spawned by his work as well as the disasters, but these adaptations are so plentiful that it's easy to forget some of the merely meh-to-good ones that exist.

Yes, there was a big studio rendition of "Hearts of Atlantis" starring Anthony Hopkins and a young Anton Yelchin, and, no, you didn't imagine "The Night Flier" or "Mercy." The television adaptations are particularly easy to forget because, well, most of them are utterly, aggressively forgettable. A "Rose Red" miniseries really happened, and "Desperation" actually was turned into a TV movie. With depressingly few exceptions,...

This Controversial 27 Year Old Stephen King Story Is More Relevant Than Ever
Image
In 1982, Stephen King published Different Seasons, an anthology of brooding dramas that explored humanity's darker impulses — and the most disturbing of the four is Apt Pupil. This late-1970s story of an American teenager's involvement with a Nazi war criminal hit the big screen in 1998, but both versions strangely forecast the dark cultural changes inaugurated by the Columbine shooting in 1999.

The protagonist of Apt Pupil is a seemingly wholesome teen whose fascist fantasies turn him into a killer. The written story concludes with a crime that has become sadly common in recent years; the film's ending is less violent, but in some ways much darker. Both versions are strangely prescient about far-right trends in modern youth culture, and even fans familiar with Stephen King's novella may find that the story has a very different impact today.

Captain America: Brave New World Leaves One Massive Question Unanswered
Image
This post contains major spoilers for "Captain America: Brave New World."

2024 was a pretty quiet year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with only "Deadpool & Wolverine" hitting theaters. 2025 is a different animal, as we've got several MCU entries gracing the silver screen this year, beginning with "Captain America: Brave New World," which is currently in theaters at the time of publication. This is a very consequential film regarding the wider MCU, from addressing the Celestial in the ocean from "Eternals" to introducing us to Harrison Ford's take on Thaddeus Ross. That second plot point warrants much discussion.

"Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones" icon Harrison Ford takes over the role of Thaddeus Ross in the MCU in place of the late William Hurt. This marks the actor's first appearance as the character, who has been part of this universe dating back to 2008's "The Incredible Hulk." In "Brave New World,...

1923 Season 1: You Aren’t the Only One to Think Taylor Sheridan’s Finale Is Awfully Similar to Leonardo DiCaprio’s $2.2 Billion Blockbuster
Image
Well, it’s not the best time to fall in love… or is it? If you’re a sucker for romantic tales that play out with all the intensity of a stormy ocean crossing, then 1923 Season 1’s finale was tailor-made for you. Picture the scene: two souls, caught between passion and destiny, trying to navigate life’s treacherous waters. Sound familiar? It should—because for anyone who remembers the iconic Titanic, there’s more than a whiff of that same fate-laden romance in the air.

Harrison Ford in 1923 | Credits: Paramount+

If you’ve watched the dramatic conclusion of 1923 Season 1, you might have felt that unmistakable déjà vu. It’s like Taylor Sheridan took a page straight from James Cameron’s notebook. If you’re getting Titanic vibes, you’re definitely not alone. What fans can’t ignore is the undeniable parallel to the iconic love story set on a massive,...

Here’s the Movie Patton Oswalt Calls ‘Incel Ratatouille’
Image
Anyone can cook, but not everyone can turn a mischief of rats into a man-eating death squad.

The central premise of Ratatouille is one of those plots that, even 17 years after the film’s release, the internet can’t stop discussing, because it’s so novel and ridiculous that memes about it never get old. In the Pixar classic, a loser loner partners with an intelligent rat who helps him solve his career problems before the rodent recruits an entire horde of organized vermin who physically overpower the host’s enemies.

Now, that synopsis may read like the plot of a C- horror film, and that’s because it is — 36 years before Ratatouille made human-rat relationships cute and culinary, the cult favorite horror film Willard did something similar.

Earlier this week, Ratatouille star and stand-up comedy legend Patton Oswalt finally got around to watching the presumed inspiration behind his biggest film to date,...

Yes, Titanic 2 Exists: Is It Supposed To Be A Sequel?!
Image
James Camerons Titanic is a standalone story, so the fact that 2010 movie Titanic 2 exists continues to raise questions about an unknown follow-up to Rose's story every time it appears on a new streaming platform. James Camerons name has become synonymous with big-budget productions, mostly from the sci-fi genre, but one of his biggest and most ambitious projects ever was Titanic, the now-legendary disaster drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslett released in 1997. There's never been a sequel to James Cameron's Titanic, which means there was no shortage of confusion when the 2010 movie Titanic II entered circulation.

Based on the real-life tragedy of the Rms Titanic in 1912, Camerons Titanic tells a fictional story led by fictional characters. Sadly, Rose and Jacks story ends in tragedy, as Jack becomes one of the many victims of the sinking of the Titanic, while Rose is eventually rescued. Titanic tells a complete story and...

Willard (2003) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The hit and miss nature of both early 2000s horror and the premise are quite obvious in today’s selection. While the original Willard and its sequel Ben are known entities, it’s not like they are the heaviest of hitters in terms of horror property. In fact, Willard is Exactly the type of property that I will always argue needs a remake. Well, needs is a strong word, but it lends itself better to a remake than something as perfect as the first Halloween or Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Willard is a solid movie but underseen by today’s audience and would have maybe been more attractive to the audiences of 21 years ago who maybe grew up with the original. Sadly, that didn’t happen as it was arguably one of 2003’s biggest flops and that’s a huge bummer because not only is the movie fun with great, mostly practical effects,...

Mutants, Monsters and Mayhem: Looking at the Body Horrors of the ‘X-Men’ Films
Image
Many of us were excited about the prospect of The New Mutants a few years ago. The sales pitch of an “X-Men horror movie” sounded like a match made in heaven. As often happens, the film that was released was far more of a pillow fight than the cage match I’d hoped for.

But as we excitedly embrace the kid in us with the release of X-Men ’97 on Disney+, I couldn’t help but imagine a more adult side of that universe. What if the X-Men franchise embraced the opportunity to lean into the horror genre? I’m talking about the body horror of its mutants, the cruelness of its villains, and the potential for superhumanly violent finishers that would make Mortal Kombat blush. With all that in mind, I took a look through the original X-Men films on a horror scavenger hunt and found some pretty cool trinkets along the way.

Robert M. Young, ‘Extremities’ and ‘Dominick and Eugene’ Director, Dies at 99
Image
Robert M. Young, the adventurous director who called the shots for Edward James Olmos in The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, Farrah Fawcett in Extremities and Tom Hulce and Ray Liotta in Dominick and Eugene, died Feb. 6, his son Andrew announced. He was 99.

After getting his start in educational and documentary films, Young also directed the 1969 Peabody-winning CBS telefilm J.T., written by Jane Wagner. Revolving around a Harlem youngster (Kevin Hooks) and an alley cat, it bowed on a Saturday afternoon and was repeated in primetime as the network preempted its most popular show, Gunsmoke.

Young also served as cinematographer, producer and co-writer with director Michael Roemer on the critically acclaimed drama Nothing But a Man (1964), featuring Ivan Dixon and jazz vocalist Abbey Lincoln as a struggling young Black couple in Alabama.

Young made his feature directorial debut with Short Eyes (1977), which starred Bruce Davison, José Pérez and several real-life prisoners...

Five Nights At Freddy's Rotten Tomatoes Score Can't Compete With Weekend's Other New Horror Movie
Image
Despite its box office success, Five Nights at Freddy's has received negative reviews from critics with a low 29% score on Rotten Tomatoes. In contrast, Suitable Flesh, released on the same day, enjoys a much better critical reception with an 83% score and is Certified Fresh. While Five Nights at Freddy's breaks box office records, it cannot compare to the critical acclaim achieved by Suitable Flesh.

Five Nights at Freddy's is a success, but critically it can't compare to the weekend's other new horror movie, Suitable Flesh. Five Nights at Freddy's, which is based on the video game franchise of the same name, is a huge success at the box office, earning the highest-grossing opening weekend for any movie from Blumhouse Productions, among other records. However, it has been panned by critics, who have given it a dismal 29% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘Suitable Flesh’ Review: Heather Graham Gamely Steers an Uneasily Erotic H.P. Lovecraft Adaptation
Image
“Suitable Flesh” bears a parting dedication to Stuart Gordon, who passed away in 2020 and is certainly missed, especially after watching this campy concoction, which revisits his beloved H.P. Lovecraft territory minus the late screen genre specialist’s knack for welding grotesque horror content to a black comedy tone.

There are some yuks (and yucks) to be had in his frequent writing collaborator Dennis Paoli’s very loose, gender-reversed riff on the cult fantasist’s lesser-regarded 1933 short story “The Thing on the Doorstep.” But director Joe Lynch haplessly plays much of this supernatural tale as an erotic thriller, the uncertainty of satirical intent leaving his actors looking silly. Releasing to limited theaters and streaming platforms on Oct. 27, it’s a movie best watched after a few libations, which might make more of the laughs play as deliberate.

A framing device finds Dr. Dani Upton examining an apparently grisly corpse in a morgue,...

‘Suitable Flesh’ Director Joe Lynch on Casting His Lovecraft Movie and Building a Stuart GordonVerse [Interview]
Image
Director Joe Lynch’s (Wrong Turn 2, Mayhem, “Creepshow”) new movie Suitable Flesh, based on H.P. Lovecraft’s The Thing On The Doorstep, is poised to unleash body-swapping horror this Halloween weekend.

Suitable Flesh is bringing Lovecraftian madness to theaters and VOD on October 27, 2023, and the film will later be hitting Shudder for exclusive streaming in January 2024.

In Suitable Flesh, “After murdering her young patient, a once-esteemed psychiatrist helplessly watches her life spiral into a nightmarish maelstrom of supernatural hysteria and gruesome deaths, all linked to a seemingly unstoppable ancient curse.”

The film stars Barbara Crampton, Heather Graham, Judah Lewis, Bruce Davison, Johnathon Schaech, and Jonah Ray.

Dennis Paoli, the writer of Re-Animator and From Beyond, wrote the script.

Bloody Disgusting previously spoke with Joe Lynch at Tribeca, where he teased the Lovecraft connections for Gordon’s fans and the advice Brian Yuzna gave him when making the film.

Suitable Flesh Review
Image
Plot: A psychiatrist becomes obsessed with one of her young clients with multiple personalities.

Review: There have been few horror films more anticipated this year than Joe Lynch’s Suitable Flesh. The buzz coming out of various festivals has made this sound like a blood-soaked, sex-crazed, good time. Then add Barbara Crampton and writer Dennis Paoli returning to the world of Lovecraftian Horror, and my excitement was off the charts. I loved the setup of the film, using Lovecraft to help bring a new flavor to the possession/body swap formula. There are namedrops like Miskatonic University and even Cthulu, so it casts a wide net for Lovecraft fans.

If you don’t consider yourself up to date on all things H.P. Lovecraft, don’t worry, there’s plenty here to grasp onto. Because whether it’s Freaky or Freaky Friday , the body swap genre has many different approaches to take.

‘Suitable Flesh’ Review: Heather Graham Is Possessed by a Lovecraftian Spirit in Giddy Homage to ‘Re-Animator’ Director Stuart Gordon
Image
When “Re-Animator” director Stuart Gordon died in 2020, he left behind a blood-soaked legacy that includes a handful of giddily exploitative horror classics and a legion of genre filmmakers who grew up in the shadow of his low-budget Lovecraft adaptations.

In that light, it would be hard to imagine a more fitting tribute to Gordon’s work than a goofy-smart and gore-happy wad of immaculate trash about an ancient Entity that inhabits the body of an undersexed psychiatrist played by Heather Graham. Lucky for us, Gordon ensured that we wouldn’t have to; based on the Lovecraft story “The Thing on the Doorstep” and written by Gordon’s longtime collaborator Dennis Paoli, “Suitable Flesh” is one of the last projects the late schlockmeister was developing before his death. And director Joe Lynch’s take on the material is every bit as loving and heretical towards Gordon’s memory as you would expect from a true devotee.

Suitable Flesh Director & Cast Talk Horror Inspirations, Stuart Gordon's Legacy & More
Image
Suitable Flesh is a haunting and visceral horror movie based on H.P. Lovecraft's "The Thing on the Doorstep," exploring body-swapping through an occult ritual. The film features an ensemble cast including Heather Graham and Judah Lewis and pays homage to Lovecraft's previous adaptations and the body horror genre. Director Joe Lynch and the cast talk about the influence of the late director Stuart Gordon, the practical effects used in the film, and the unique experience of playing multiple characters.

Not all body-swapping stories are full of fun mischief, as seen in Suitable Flesh. Based on H.P. Lovecraft's "The Thing on the Doorstep", the movie follows a psychiatrist as she learns one of her patient's schizophrenic symptoms are actually due to someone using an occult ritual to swap bodies with him, and she finds herself the next target of the one behind it.

Heather Graham and Judah Lewis lead...

"It's a fantasy, to spice up your sex life!" Rlje Films + Shudder have revealed an official trailer for an indie horror flick titled Suitable Flesh, a new Lovecraftian tale arriving to watch starting in October. This first premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival & FrightFest earlier this year, and it's next set to play at both Fantastic Fest and Sitges before the release. Written by H.P. ‘Suitable Flesh’ Trailer: Heather Graham Is a Possessed Psychiatrist in Campy H.P. Lovecraft Adaptation
Image
Heather Graham is becoming unhinged playing a slew of characters, including an undead demon, in H.P. Lovecraft adaptation “Suitable Flesh.”

Graham stars as psychiatrist Elizabeth Derby who becomes obsessed with a seductive younger patient (Judah Lewis) suffering extreme personality disorder. Yet Elizabeth soon realizes there is a dark occult danger to being in his presence.

Bruce Davison, Johnathon Schaech, and Barbara Crampton also star in the film directed by Joe Lynch, with Crampton producing. Dennis Paoli penned the script, based on Lovecraft’s 1933 short story “The Thing on the Doorstep.”

“Re-Animator” scribe Paoli first developed the original script for “Suitable Flesh,” then titled “Envy,” with late filmmaker Stuart Gordon, who died in 2020. After later signing on, director Lynch swapped the gender of the lead psychiatrist character, now played by Graham.

“Joe Lynch is such a cinephile,” Graham told IndieWire in an interview conducted during the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Frightfest 2023: ‘Suitable Flesh’ Review
Image
Stars: Heather Graham, Barbara Crampton, Johnathon Schaech, Bruce Davison, Drake Malone, Judah Lewis | Written by Dennis Paoli | Directed by Joe Lynch

Directed by FrightFest favourite Joe Lynch, Suitable Flesh is a deliberate homage to the work of director Stuart Gordon (who died in 2020), specifically his adaptations of the stories of H.P. Lovecraft, such as Re-Animator, From Beyond and Castle Freak. Sadly, though it definitely has its moments, the end result is something of a mixed bag.

Set in the Miskatonic University hospital facility (where Re-Animator took place), the film begins with psychiatrist Dr Danielle Upton (longtime Gordon collaborator and all-around horror superstar Barbara Crampton) investigating her disturbed psych ward patient Elizabeth (Heather Graham), also a former psychiatrist. As Elizabeth relates her tale, flashbacks reveal that she became obsessed with handsome young patient Asa Waite (Judah Lewis), who was suffering with paranoid delusions.

However, it soon becomes clear that Asa is something far more sinister,...

Indie Filmmaker Michael Alden On SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreements: “Sometimes The Producer is The Inadvertent Victim” – Guest Column
Image
Editor’s note: As SAG-AFTRA continues to encourage its members to both respect and support the guild’s Interim Agreements, Deadline has learned that the number of producers currently requesting permission to begin, complete and/or promote their films during the strike hovers around 1,400. Here, independent producer Michael Alden reflects on the process and questions why he’s still waiting for a thumbs up from SAG-AFTRA to spread the word about his latest film, a supernatural thriller starring Bruce Davison, Selena Anduze and Keith David.

As an independent feature film producer whose production company is SAG signatory, I produced and completed a feature film entitled The Last Call (aka From the Shadows) under the union’s Ultra Low Budget Contract.

My film is slated to be released on September 19. I was told by SAG that, with the strike, I would need an interim...

Harry Bosch Hunts Down Maddie’s Kidnapper in ‘Bosch: Legacy’ Season 2 Teaser (Video)
Mimi Rogers, Titus Welliver, and Madison Lintz in Bosch: Legacy (2022)
Harry Bosch is returning to Amazon Freevee on Oct. 20 – and he’s taking matters into his own hands to save his daughter in a new teaser for “Bosch: Legacy” Season 2.

The drama series’ second season finds Bosch (Titus Welliver) working alongside Honey “Money” Chandler (Mimi Rogers) to track down a masked assailant who kidnapped his daughter Maddie (Madison Lintz) before time runs out. But as the FBI scrutinizes Carl Rogers’ murder, Bosch and Chandler are placed under suspicion.

In the clip, Jerry Edgar (Jamie Hector) tells Bosch that he needs to let authorities do their job to find his daughter, to which he replies: “Don’t cut me out!.” He also makes clear that while the FBI has to do things the “right way,” those rules don’t apply to him.

In addition to Edgar, Season 2 will see the return of Detective Robert “Crate” Moore (Gregory Scott Cummins), and Detective...

Queering the Oscars: Bruce Davison in "Longtime Companion"
Image
by Cláudio Alves

As nominees, presenters, and other attendees arrived on the red carpet for the 63rd Academy Awards, they were met with righteous commotion. Act-up members picketed the ceremony, holding banners decrying universal inaction when over 102,000 people had already died by the modern plague of AIDS. During the festivities proper, activist David Lacaillade, who had found his way to the audience, stood up and shouted invective against the proceedings, demanding action and calling those who do nothing hypocrites. AIDS Action Now! Sadly, there seemed to be very little in the way of open solidarity inside the Shrine Auditorium.

Earlier, protestors offered button pins emblazoned with "Silence = Death" to the folk walking the red carpet. Most people declined to wear them, but Bruce Davison was one of the few to don the message. He was also the rare example to wear it all ceremony – some people took them down before the opening monologue was through.
