31 Years Before Landman, Sylvester Stallone Made a Brief Cameo in This Forgotten HBO Drama
Image
In the early 1990s, HBO was home to some of the best shows on TV. From shows like The Sopranos to Sex and the City, the network had plenty of original shows to keep viewers entertained. But before these breakout hits, one of the first HBO originals was Dream On, a quirky and creative sitcom. Created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, who would go on to make Friends, Dream On is now a largely forgotten TV show that once featured one of the most creative and unconventional formats on TV.

Premiering in 1990, Dream On stood out as one of the first HBO series to test the waters of adult content. With full nudity and some strong language, the show was an early sign of HBO's commitment to pushing the limits of what TV could be. But despite its ground-breaking approach, Dream On never achieved the same cultural impact as other shows of its era,...

The Best Christmas Horror Movies: From Gremlins to Black Christmas!
Image
‘Tis the season to watch holiday-themed horror, so we here at Arrow in the Head have decided to compile a list of the Best Christmas Horror Movies! All of the films below are, at the very least, set around Christmastime, and some of them take the connection to the holidays further than that. Here are the top 12 horror movies that we recommend checking out over the next week:

I Come In Peace (1990)

It’s easy to forget that I Come in Peace (a.k.a. Dark Angel) is set around the Christmas holiday, because Christmas is mostly just represented by some set decorations – and you’re distracted from those decorations by all the awesome stuff going on around them. Dolph Lundgren stars as Jack Caine, a Houston detective who doesn’t play by the rules. He’s stuck working with stuffy, suit-wearing FBI agent Larry Smith (Brian Benben), and these...

Vacation with John Candy with the new 4K restoration Summer Rental Blu-ray release from Kino Lorber
Image
One of John Candy’s 80s classics from director Carl Reiner, Summer Rental, was pretty elusive on physical media. Fans of this comedy don’t have to wait any longer as the boutique label Kino Lorber will now be releasing a new 4K restoration Blu-ray transfer of the film at the start of the new year. Blu-ray.com is reporting that Summer Rental, which was previously scheduled to hit retailers this year, will now have its physical media release on January 21, 2025.

The 1985 comedy stars John Candy, Karen Austin, Kerri Green, Joey Lawrence, and Aubrey Jene and is directed by Dick Van Dyke Show alum and Ocean’s Eleven star, Carl Reiner, who would direct another summer-themed comedy with Mark Harmon, Summer School, just a couple years later.

I Come in Peace (aka Dark Angel): The Best Christmas Action Movie You Never Saw?
Image
I Come in Peace… You Go in Pieces!

So goes one of the coolest one-liners I have ever heard, and it’s part of one of the most unheralded Christmas action movies ever. Now, Christmas action movies have always been a thing. Something about the juxtaposition of the holidays and ultra-violent action has always been irresistible to Hollywood. In movies like First Blood and To Live and Die in LA, the holiday theme makes the desperately violent scenario all the more grim. At the same time, other classics like Lethal Weapon and Die Hard ultimately have Christmas messages about friendship and family that come through just as strongly as in a straight-up Christmas movie like It’s a Wonderful Life.

Yet, not every Christmas action flick becomes a classic, which brings me to this special Christmas edition of The Best Movie You Never Saw, where we tackle the Dolph Lundgren Actioner I Come In Peace,...

Wendie Malick Can Only Stand Tall
Image
NBC’s long-running hit sitcom Night Court revolved around the idiosyncratic cases argued in its titular location, and the lovable weirdos who worked there — none weirder than youthful judge Harry Stone (Harry Anderson), who never let his work on the bench interfere with his true passion: close-up magic.

The sequel series, which premiered last year, doesn’t stray too far from the original. Once again, the presiding Night Court judge is young, quirky and optimistic about most people she meets. She’s also a Judge Stone — Judge Abby Stone (Melissa Rauch), Harry’s daughter. She’s exactly the kind of judge who would eagerly sign up for a program called Operation Second Chance, which hires formerly incarcerated people. And since original prosecutor Olivia Moore (India de Beaufort) has departed since the Season Two finale, Abby’s decided to fill the vacancy with Julianne, whose record for (among other crimes) arson has recently been expunged.

John Candy’s Summer Rental will be getting a Blu-ray release later this year
Image
One of John Candy’s 80s classics from director Carl Reiner, Summer Rental, was pretty elusive on physical media. Fans of this comedy don’t have to wait any longer as the boutique label Kino Lorber will now be releasing a new Blu-ray transfer of the film sometime this year. Blu-ray.com is reporting that Summer Rental will be hitting retailers in late 2024.

The 1985 comedy stars John Candy, Karen Austin, Kerri Green, Joey Lawrence, and Aubrey Jene. The plot description reads, “After air traffic controller Jack Chester loses a plane (it’s covered on his screen by a fly), he’s told to take a break. Jack books his family into a plush resort, but it turns out that their lodgings are in a hut by the beach, and that’s as good as the vacation gets.” Reiner would direct another summer-themed comedy with Mark Harmon, Summer School, just a couple years later.

Grey's Anatomy: All 3 Spin-offs Explained (& How They Connect)
Image
Grey's Anatomy has 3 spin-off shows, including Private Practice and Station 19, all with crossover stories and success. Private Practice follows Dr. Addison Montgomery, while Station 19 focuses on firefighters away from hospitals. Grey's Anatomy continues to tease more spin-offs, with ABC executives open to future possibilities.

There are three different Greys Anatomy spin-off shows connecting to the main series, continuing the legacy of one of the longest-running and most popular shows in TV history. The series premiered its 19th season in 2022 and shows no signs of slowing down. Greys Anatomy follows the basic premise of medical dramas, telling the stories of surgical interns, residents, and attendings as they do their best to balance their personal and professional lives, which end up overlapping most of the time.

The series was led by Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), one of the few characters from season 1 that lasted to season 19. Many other characters either left...

The Most Underrated Action Movies of the 1990s
Image
The 1990s represented a golden epoch for action cinema. This was the time which saw VHS and its digitized successor DVD introduce a whole new generation of fans to the magic of stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. And those titans from the ‘80s still claimed big wins, too, at the box office and home media via the likes of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Demolition Man, and Cliffhanger.

It was also the decade that saw audiences turn out in droves to theaters and rental stores to catch a glimpse of Steven Seagal’s flying fists in movies like Under Siege or Jean-Claude Van Damme and his trademark splits in Timecop; Jackie Chan finally got the larger American fanbase he so richly deserved thanks to the Rush Hour movies while Bruce Willis gave us Die Hard With A Vengeance, the best of all the Die Hard sequels, before pivoting...

Masters Of Horror Rewatch: John Landis’ “Deer Woman”
The man who gave us cinema’s greatest werewolf now brings us a pretty lady with deer legs.

I love John Landis. I know not everyone shares this opinion. He has been controversial ever since his involvement in the Twilight Zone: The Movie accident that claimed the lives of his leading man, Vic Morrow, and co-stars Myca Dinh Le and Shin-Yi Chen, both of whom were children. It’s an impossible discussion to have in any kind of satisfying way here; there was an entire book written about it (Outrageous Conduct by Stephen Farber and Marc Green) and a lengthy court case at the end of which Landis was absolved of legal responsibility. Clearly it was still a tragedy, and clearly Landis shares in the blame for an accident that could have been avoided. I only bring it up here to provide some context for Landis’ career and to let you,...

Imposters: Season Two Ratings
Bravo doesn't produce and run many of their own scripted TV shows, but they do like to keep an oar in the water.
