Last week, HBO announced that The Last of Us scene-stealer Kaitlyn Dever would be campaigning as a guest star, as opposed to a supporting actress, for the zombie apocalypse drama. That left an opening in Gold Derby's Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy odds that has since been filled by ... drumroll, please ... her costar Isabela Merced.
Dever plays Abby, a soldier who seeks revenge against Joel (Pedro Pascal) in Season 2 for the death of her father in Season 1. Since Dever has only appeared in two episodes (so far), she's eligible to compete as a guest star for The Last of Us because of the TV Academy's "less than 50 percent" ruling. The 28-year-old will also be on the Emmy ballot for Apple Cider Vinegar in Best Limited Series/Movie Actress.

Meet the Makers: The Day of the Jackal & Lockerbie: A Search for Truth
The morning kicked off with a pair of powerful dramas from executive producers Nigel Marchant and Gareth Neame of Carnival Films, the company responsible for such hits as “Downton Abbey” and “The Gilded Age.” Marchant noted that if their projects had a common theme, it was world-building. “I think that’s what we’re really good at — really looking at what entertains us is going to entertain an audience.”
Both “Jackal” and “Lockerbie” are currently streaming on Peacock and feature standout lead performances from Oscar-winning actors. In “Jackal,” Eddie Redmayne plays the titular assassin, who takes on many disguises. “He’s such a meticulous actor,” said Marchant. “He had to learn different languages, he [worked] with movement coaches, he had to have all of the prosthetics [work] and he really embraced all of that.”

Emmy season is upon us, and while many of this year's eligible contenders premiered in the second half of 2024, several new entries made their debuts in early 2025. (May 31 is the cutoff date for Emmy eligibility.)
Television critics have been sounding off about all of their latest favorites, and we've noted their top 2025 picks in the alphabetic listing below. We'll keep updating it throughout the season as more shows arrive on the scene, like the late-breaking Poker Face Season 2, which has a rare 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Some of the critics' choices are enjoying serious 2025 Emmys buzz, including Netflix's Adolescence, which follows a 13-year-old boy who is accused of murdering a classmate, and Apple TV+'s Severance, back for a second season of sci-fi superfluity after a three-year break. As a generation, we have been spoiled for options regarding the content we can watch. High-stakes fantasy dramas? Check. Action flicks where the protagonist comes back from the brink of death are common now. Not to forget, (quality) thrillers are around every corner.
While all of them hold their own lure, I can’t deny that nothing warms my heart more than watching a romcom. In a world obsessed with high-concept blockbusters, there’s something deeply comforting about returning to a good old-fashioned romcom. Valentine’s Day is one such movie that continues to warm my heart.

If there's one thing we know about the Oscars, it's that they have a bias against horror. Although we here at /Film love horror for how subversive and fun the genre can be — and how it's one of the only genres that consistently seems to turn a profit — the Oscar voters seem to see it as too "unrefined" to take seriously. There are too many memorable horror performances that never got a nomination, just as there are too many talented horror directors and screenwriters who never got their due.
That's why nobody expected Kathy Bates to win an Oscar for her performance in the 1990 film "Misery." Although her portrayal of the obsessive, vindictive Annie Wilkes is still beloved even 35 years later, its horror movie context still made it a long shot as far as the Academy was concerned. That's why the movie's director, Rob Reiner, had no faith in Bates...

CBS's modern take on Matlock was the breakout hit of the season for the network, thanks in part to casting Kathy Bates in a role that's much deeper than just a gender swap of Andy Griffith's classic attorney. Matty Matlock, aka Madeline Kingston, spends Season 1 seeking truth and justice for her daughter, who died as a result of the opioid epidemic. Viewers follow her as she makes friends and seeks clues among those in the law firm Jacobson Moore in hopes of finding who hid the critical evidence against the pharmaceutical company Wellbrexa that could've saved her daughter's life. Between this, however, is a case-of-the-week formula for Matty and the team that hearkens back to the show's predecessor. According to Skye P. Marshall, that element isn't going anywhere either as the show changes focus in Season 2.

Here comes 72 hours of ballyhoo and bluster about the state of the television business. Spoiler alert: Every platform making a upfront presentation this week in New York will find the way to pitch themselves as No. 1 in something.
But the network with the strongest story to tout won’t be part of this week’s parade. CBS staked out an early announcement of its 2025-26 season schedule on May 6. It’s the second year in a row that CBS has opted not to host an event during upfront week, in favor of smaller events in multiple cities.
CBS leaders George Cheeks and Amy Reisenbach took a hard-won victory lap last week as they unveiled the 2025-26 schedule. The pair made a presentation to media reporters that emphasized CBS’ biggest achievement has been to find new shows that connect with the network’s established linear audience and also stand out on...

The smoke has cleared after the bombshell Matlock Season 1 finale, and now, it's time to look toward the future. CBS' reimagining of the Andy Griffith legal drama followed the septuagenarian lawyer Madeline "Matty" Matlock/Madeline Kingston (Kathy Bates) as she pursued the truth about a pharmaceutical cover-up at the law firm Jacobson Moore that could've saved her daughter's life. The final episode brought the Wellbrexa case to a head when Skye P. Marshall's Olympia finally learned the truth from Julian's (Jason Ritter) deposit box – that her ex-husband had hidden the critical documents under pressure from his father. Now that she's been promoted to senior partner and is left reeling from the reveal, she's left to choose who her allies are and how she's going to best bring justice to the victims of the opioid epidemic hurt by Julian's actions.

Matlock was one of the hit new shows of 2024. Case in point: It scored the first series renewal of the season after just two episodes aired this past fall. The Kathy Bates-led legal drama delivers its biggest bombshells of the season in its two-hour Season 1 finale on Thursday, April 17, on CBS. And it won’t be a long wait for Season 2 now that CBS has confirmed its 2025-2026 schedule. Inspired by the Andy Griffith series of the same name but not a direct remake, Matlock stars Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a brilliant septuagenarian who achieved success in her younger years and decides to rejoin the work force at a prestigious law firm where she uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to win cases. Matty is assigned to Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), a senior attorney and key rainmaker with a thirst for justice, Olympia’s ex-husband, Julian (Jason...

Paramount+ is blending CBS hits, big stars, and bold new originals in one lineup.
Paramount+ doesn’t always get the spotlight, but it’s been quietly stacking a very strong lineup. A big part of that is the full CBS slate — new episodes of hit network shows drop fast, and it’s got live access too if you’re into that. But what really makes it stand out is the mix: buzzy originals, big franchise spin-offs, and the whole ShowTime library folded in. Whether you’re into soapy dramas, sharp comedies, or gritty crime thrillers, there’s something here that actually feels current and worth keeping up with. So if you’re wondering what to start with, here are my top seven shows to stream on Paramount+ right now.
Top 7 TV shows streaming on Paramount+ right now:
No. 7: ‘Matlock’
No. 6: ‘Ghosts’
No. 5: ‘Tracker’

Skye P. Marshall and Jason Ritter didn’t expect their Matlock Season 1 finale ending. In fact, Marshall thought the safety deposit box reveal was going to look a lot different and establish a different mystery. What they know for sure is, Ritter’s character is going to have much higher stakes in Season 2, premiering this fall on CBS (see the fall 2025 schedule here). And Marshall’s Olympia isn’t going to let the father of her children take the fall for the Wellbrexa scandal, not when she knows there were bigger “dictators” at play in the concealing of the all-important smoking gun in Matty’s (Kathy Bates) investigation. Marshall and Ritter’s final scene together in the Matlock Season 1 finale showed Olympia discovering the Wellbrexa study in Julian’s safety deposit box. When Julian showed up, his ex-wife made him come clean. He confessed to being instructed ...

When CBS first ordered a "Matlock" reboot back in 2023, the decision may have been a head-scratcher to some. Even aside from the fact that most of the cast of the original "Matlock" have passed away and their fans were likely nearing 60 years of age at least, the television landscape is already so crowded with courtroom dramas that an addition of this kind could understandably feel unnecessary. Speaking for those of us who held that opinion back then, we're happy to have been proven wrong.
"Matlock" is an unexpectedly fresh TV show with a unique perspective on the legal procedural genre, buoyed by a cast that flaunts comedic and dramatic talent in equal measure. This doesn't come as too much of a surprise if you recognize them from previous films and television shows, which include some of the best comedies and dramas TV has ever seen. The Emmy race for Best Drama Actor just received a shot of adrenaline.
For the first time since Gold Derby's 2025 Emmys predictions center opened in February, Noah Wyle is leading the odds in this topsy-turvy category. The Pitt star has overtaken Adam Scott (Severance), who has been in the No. 1 position since early March. Before that, Gary Oldman (Slow Horses) was the frontrunner.
Max's real-time hospital drama has been on a major upswing since its final episodes streamed in April. In one buzzed-about moment, Wyle's character, Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, had a mental breakdown after a concert shooting brought dozens of patients into his emergency room, including his quasi-stepson's new girlfriend. Wyle is a five-time Emmy nominee for ER (1995-99), but this would be his first win.

“Abbott Elementary” and “Ghosts” are two of the greatest comedies on TV, period. Yes, I know they’re broadcast shows — but that’s my point. Until recently, that was considered a knock when it came to awards and critical acclaim. Not in 2025.
Everyone loves a story about the rise of the underdog, and broadcast is definitely experiencing one. After too many years of being the place where you sold your lesser (but extremely profitable!) work, broadcast has been lauded as once again a cool place to produce.
It started, of course, with the “Netflix effect.” What have people been bingeing at the streamers? Why, broadcast series like “The Office,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “NCIS” — the kinds of shows with deep libraries because they came from broadcast’s 22- or 24-episode seasons.

Matlock is a reboot of the hit series from 1986. The new CBS series stars Kathy Batesas a septuagenarian named Madeline "Matty" Matlock and the end of Season 1 of the series had Matty being investigated by one of her closest friends. Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) had opened a case to investigate Madeline and the shocking reveal was in the penultimate episode. But the two worked together in the finale and we still have a lot to unpack in Olympia and Matty's relationship, even after the finale. Marshall though was talking to People when she shared who fans have reacted to Olympia's Season 1 arc.
“I get snatched on the street, like, ‘Sis, I was praying it wasn't you. I'm so happy it wasn't you. But what are you going to do?’ ” Marshall said. “And I'm like, ‘I can't tell you. I don't even know.’ We're all impatiently waiting for the first script of season two.

The adaptation of Stephen King's bestseller Misery remains the only movie based on the author's work to win an Academy Award. The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, both by director Frank Darabont, snatched seven and four nominations, respectively, but they didn't win any awards. Ultimately, in 1991, Kathy Bates was announced as the winner in the Best Actress category, but director Rob Reiner never believed his film could break the streak. The reason? Misery was a horror film, and he was well-trained enough to know the Academy doesn't love those.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Reiner and Bates met at the 16th edition of the TCM Classic Film Festival, where they spoke about the 1990 classic that sees writer Paul Sheldon facing his worst nightmare: his biggest fan, who will stop at nothing until Sheldon finds a way to revive her favorite character. Disney TV’s studio head has offered an update on the future of American Horror Story. In an interview with Deadline, Eric Schrier gave an update on life after season 13 of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's anthology series.
He admitted that the network doesn't "have another incarnation of American Horror Story ordered" at the moment, but they would be up for it if “Ryan has an idea that is great.” American Horror Story ran for 12 seasons between 2011 and 2024, with AHS season 13 on the way next year. Over the years, the show has covered haunted houses and hotels, aliens, witch covens, and cults.
Although there is no season 14 on the cards for AHS, Schrier has left the door open for the creator to return with new concepts. "It's a franchise that, by design, can always be rebooted. And so when Ryan has an idea that is great and can figure...

Netflix has a strong Emmy hand to play this TV awards season, positioning the seventh season of its flagship anthology series “Black Mirror” for a major awards run — and this time, the dystopian drama might be among its most formidable contenders yet.
Confirmed exclusively to Variety, the streamer is submitting three standout performances for lead acting honors in the limited or anthology series or TV movie categories: Paul Giamatti for the melancholic and moving “Eulogy,” and Chris O’Dowd and Rashida Jones for their resonant turns in the sociopolitical two-hander “Common People.” It’s a bold push that signals high hopes for a season already being hailed as a return to form — and possibly the series’ strongest outing since its Emmy-winning heyday.
Giamatti’s performance as Phillip, a solitary man navigating grief through digital means in “Eulogy,” has generated both tears and buzz. The 46-minute episode explores the ethics of AI-driven memorials,...

In a crowded sea of horror this summer season, Dangerous Animals stands apart. Not just for its originality but for the way it upends a summer genre staple: shark horror.
Dangerous Animals swims into theaters on June 6, 2025, and stars Hassie Harrison (“Yellowstone”), Josh Heuston (“Heartbreak High”), and Jai Courtney (The Suicide Squad) as the unsettling killer featured in our exclusive image (above).
The Loved Ones and The Devil’s Candy director Sean Byrne and screenwriter Nick Lepard blend the shark movie with serial killer thriller to exhilarating results, with Byrne injecting his style of intense horror to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Nerve-fraying horror aside, it’s the type of bold reinvention that’s long overdue in this particularly crowded subgenre.
It’s man who’s the most dangerous one here. Dangerous Animals may feature cinema’s favorite aquatic predator, but they’re merely animals being used as...

Kathy Bates admits that she was horrified after watching herself starring in Stephen King's Misery for the first time. She feared it would be "the end of her career."
Bates' performance as Annie Wilkes drew widespread acclaim from critics, with Misery going on to become the only film based on a Stephen King novel to win an Oscar to date. Speaking at the TCM Classic Film Festival alongside director Rob Reiner, Bates talked about the film and the creative differences they shared on set. Ultimately, Bates' role in the film did anything but kill her career. Instead, it secured her the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Interestingly, there was one scene from Stephen King's original 1987 Misery novel that Bates and Reiner didn't agree on. In the original story, Paul Sheldon (James Caan) is subjected to a series of tortures after being "rescued" by super-fan Annie Wilkes (Bates). He ends...

In the 1990 Stephen King adaptation Misery (watch it Here), Kathy Bates’ character Annie Wilkes breaks author Paul Sheldon’s ankle with a sledgehammer and shoots another man in the back with a shotgun – but in King’s book, Annie cut off Sheldon’s foot with an axe instead of breaking his ankle, and stabbed the other man before running him over with her lawnmower. While appearing alongside director Rob Reiner at a special TCM Classic Film Festival 35th anniversary screening of the film, Bates revealed that she was disappointed Reiner toned down the violence for the film version.
Directed by Reiner from a screenplay by William Goldman (which received rewrites from Reiner and and producer Andrew Scheinman), Misery has the following synopsis: After a serious car crash, novelist Paul Sheldon is rescued by former nurse Annie Wilkes, who claims to be his biggest fan. Annie brings him to her remote cabin to recover,...

Kathy Bates wishes Misery was even more miserable.
The Matlock star took the stage at the TCM Classic Film Festival alongside director Rob Reiner, where they looked back on the 1990 horror. The film is an adaptation of Stephen King’s 1987 novel, which sees Bates’ character, Annie Wilkes, rescue the beloved author Paul Sheldon (James Caan) after suffering a car crash.
After being “rescued,” Annie subjects him to a series of torture. In the original story, Paul loses his foot, which was a detail that ultimately was omitted from Reiner’s adaptation — a shift Bates wasn’t keen on.
“I was crushed that you took that out,” she told Reiner, per IndieWire. “I didn’t agree with that at all.”
During their conversation, they discussed Bates’ Academy Award winning performance, which was an accolade Reiner thought she wouldn’t win for the role.
“You said, ‘You can campaign, but you’re not gonna get it,...

Two of the stars of The Last of Us are on the rise this week in Gold Derby's Emmy predictions.
Pedro Pascal, whose beloved character Joel had a brutal run-in with a golf club in the second episode of Season 2, has jumped from fourth place to third place in Best Drama Actor. Meanwhile, series newcomer Isabela Merced, who plays the free-spirited zombie apocalypse survivor Dina, has ascended from ninth place to eighth place in Best Drama Supporting Actress. This would be Pascal's fourth career Emmy bid after receiving three in 2023 for The Last of Us, Saturday Night Live, and Patagonia; Merced is seeking her first nomination.
Series lead Bella Ramsey is still in second place in Best Drama Actress, behind only Kathy Bates (Matlock), who has claimed the No. 1 position since we began tracking the 2025 Emmys. Ramsey's defiant character Ellie must now learn how to survive without her father figure in her life.

"I am thrilled, grateful, happy ... and crippled with anxiety," says Matlock creator Jennie Snyder Urman. Her CBS drama is the No. 1 new show on television — and with success comes pressure. "I want to keep giving these amazing actors good work. I want it to continue to do well."
In Matlock, Kathy Bates plays Madeline "Matty" Matlock, a widowed lawyer returning to the workforce after her late husband's gambling debts leave her in financial ruin — or so it seems. As revealed in the pilot, none of that is true. She’s actually Madeline Kingston, a wealthy, happily married grandmother grieving the loss of her daughter to an opioid overdose. Now, she’s on a quest for answers and justice within the law firm she deems responsible.
"When you say her name, people just have a reaction," Synder Urman says of the show's star. "I love Kathy Bates. It comes with just...

CBS is currently in an era of unprecedented network television dominance. By the time the 2024-25 broadcast season ends, the Eye Network will be crowned as the top broadcaster among all viewers in primetime for the 17th season in a row via Nielsen ratings, dating back to the 2008-09 season. The streak marks a new record for sustained success on television, besting the previous high watermark of 16 consecutive seasons at #1 set by CBS back in 1955-70. Considering the measures of viewership have changed significantly since then, it's an impressive feat for the network to keep ahead of the competition for so long. Notably, there are still a few weeks left in the broadcast season, too, meaning that its lead over the other networks for the September to May season, thanks to top shows like Tracker and Matlock, is large enough that the rankings aren't likely to shift, barring a miracle.

Was Leonardo DiCaprio not the first choice for Jack in Titanic?(Photo Credit –Facebook)

The years have seen some of the best Stephen King adaptations become controversial for the changes they have made to the prolific author’s original novels – we all know King’s feelings about Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, for example. However, it seems that another film courting controversy was the Oscar-winning 1990 Rob Reiner adaptation of Misery, which starred Kathy Bates in one of her greatest cinematic roles, playing everyone’s favorite obsessive “number one fan,” Annie Wilkes. The actress had a couple of issues when it came to some of the changes made to the movie compared to King’s original novel.
While the film is a brutal and tense movie as it stands, one scene that does not play out quite the same as King’s novel is the infamous “hobbling” scene. For many people, the moment in the movie where Bates’ Wilkes takes a sledgehammer to Paul Sheldon...

Last weekend thousands of the world’s most passionate and obsessive movie fans descended upon Hollywood for the 16th annual TCM Classic Film Festival, which provided opportunities to see everything from “Gunfight at the Ok Corral” and “We’re No Angels” projected in true VistaVision to nitrate prints of “Daisy Kenyon” and “Mildred Pierce” at The Egyptian Theatre, one of only five venues in the country capable of screening that format. There was also a restoration of a silent classic with live accompaniment (“Beau Geste“), a BFI restoration of Ernst Lubitsch’s timeless — and timely — comedy “To Be or Not to Be,” and a a tribute to groundbreaking director Michael Schultz, among many other delightful programs.

Sam Anderson spent years playing Dr. Bernard Nadler on Lost, first appearing in the show's second season as Rose's husband. However, his excellent performance in the series, which centers around a plane crash leaving its passengers stranded on an island in the South Pacific, actually had some detrimental effects on the actor's real life.
In an interview with Variety, where the actor discussed his career, including his current role in the Matlockrevival with Kathy Bates, Anderson talked about his time on lost and how it affected people's perception of him – and his on-screen partner, L. How Did Leonardo DiCaprio Save His Pet Lizard On Titanic Set? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Long before he became Hollywood’s go-to climate crusader, Leonardo DiCaprio was already showing signs of being a softie for animals. We’re not talking about red carpet campaigns or big-time donations here—this story’s got a lizard, a movie set, and a brush with disaster.
Let’s rewind to the Titanic era. While most actors showed up to set with coffee, DiCaprio showed up with a lizard. His pet reptile, Blizzard, was pretty much his set sidekick. The actor’s co-star, Kathy Bates, shared (via What Culture) that he’d stroll around with Blizzard like it was no big deal: just a boy and his scaly friend.
But things got dicey real fast. One day, Blizzard somehow ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time—right in the path of a vehicle.

If you’re still processing the Matlock Finale, you are not alone in your shock and awe. That was one for the books. It was the perfect conclusion to an incredible first season.
As we wait for the next chapter in Kathy Bate’s latest endeavor, TV Fanatic is ready to break down this past season. It was amazing, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t have notes.
Not even a show as well-crafted as Matlock is safe from the discerning eye of TV Fanatic and the faithful fans of this CBS show. I’ve got my magnifying glass and I’m ready to read this series for filth.
(Sonja Flemming/CBS)
Just joking. In truth, while this is a brief breakdown of Matlock Season 1, it’s also praising the efforts of the Matlock team for giving audiences a fantastic story to follow, with even more to come.

The 16th annual TCM Classic Film Festival gets underway Thursday night in Hollywood with a 45th anniversary screening at the Chinese Imax Theatre of the acclaimed second Star Wars feature, 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, with creator George Lucas on stage to talk about it. It certainly fits in with this year’s theme, “Grand Illusions: Fantastic Worlds on Film,” though it is hard to wrap my head around the fact that this movie is now old enough to fit snugly in with so many of the classic titles TCM regularly features on their channel and at this festival, which brings them back in all their glory to the big screen.
The heavy programming of more contemporary box office hits this year does provide some irony to the title of one of the festival’s panels happening Sunday, “They Don’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To,” featuring among others Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman.

After scoring strong ratings for its freshman season, “Matlock” kicked off broadcast’s spring finales with impressive results that cemented the CBS show’s status as the season’s most-watched new series.
The two-hour Season 1 finale of “Matlock” scored 5.6 million viewers on April 17, leading the Kathy Bates-led series to rank as the No. 1 new broadcast series and No. 2 broadcast series overall of the 2024-25 TV season — a ranking that remained consistent when looking at delayed viewing data. “Matlock” averaged 17 million viewers across broadcast and streaming, according to Nielsen-live-plus-35-day figures and streaming data.
While viewership for the finale was slightly down from the 7.73 million live-plus-same-day viewers brought in by the “Matlock” premiere in September, the shift from the premiere’s special Sunday airing following”60 Minutes” to its usual Thursday timeslot might’ve accounted for shedding some viewers.
“Abbott Elementary” also closed its fourth season April 16, bringing in 4.75 million viewers across ABC,...

Matlock ended its first season with a stunning mix of cliffhangers! So how many questions are there for season 2?
Caution: This article contains Spoilers for the Matlock season 1 finale
All season, Matlock has revolved around Madeline (Kathy Bates) working at the law firm of Jacobson & Moore. Matty is hiding how she’s searching for evidence the firm buried documents that would have gotten opioids off the street, saving thousands of lives, including Matty’s daughter.
The penultimate episode had Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) uncovering Matty’s secret. While there was obvious tension about Matty’s deception, Olympia joined Matty in her quest for answers. Matty believed that Olympia’s ex-husband Julian Jr. (Jason Ritter) had hidden the documents with Olympia trying to prove his innocence.
