Why Jennifer Morrison's Dr. Allison Cameron Left House M.D.
Image
Let it never be said "House, M.D." let something as insignificant as facts get in the way of a brain-tickling mystery. For eight seasons, David Shore's Fox TV drama centered around the weekly cases of the titular, misanthropic, prodigious diagnostician and the team of doctors who spent almost as much time begging him to seek therapy for his assorted traumas as they did helping him diagnose his aggrieved patients. The show's actual medical accuracy ranged all over the place on a scale of remarkably correct to flaming garbage, but you know what? It had a damn effective formula, which provided a framework upon which the series' writers could hang all manner of soapy dramatics.

Although they would eventually escalate things to the level of having House drive his car into the home of his colleague turned ex-girlfriend Lisa Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein), the "House" writing staff started out simpler with a good old-fashioned will-they-or-won't-they.

5 Best Original Batman: The Animated Series Villains Ranked
Image
"Batman: The Animated Series" is beloved for how accurately it adapted the "Batman" comics. Many consider the series to be the definitive depiction of Gotham City. Yet "Batman" also colored in the margins, where the creators left their own thumbprints.

The series didn't only adapt existing Batman comics and characters. The "Batman" team also introduced a handful of original characters, spicing up the stories they could tell. Some of these original characters were such successes that the comics started adapting them from the show.

Take Gotham police officer Renee Montoya, one of Commissioner Gordon's (Bob Hastings) inner circle. Or Nora Fries, terminally ill wife of the villainous Mr. Freeze. Nora's admittedly more of a plot device, but her presence casts a cloud over Freeze and is the foundation of his brilliant recharacterization.

Some of the other original characters were more sinister. The many illustrious villains of "Batman: The Animated Series...

When Laughter Turns To Tears: Rediscovering ‘Nothing in Common’
Tom Hanks, Sela Ward, Bess Armstrong, Hector Elizondo, Jackie Gleason, and Eva Marie Saint in Nothing in Common (1986)
Image Source: Sony Pictures We love shining a light on movies from the past that may have been overlooked or forgotten, and Nothing in Common (1986) is a perfect example of a film that deserves a second look. Some movies touch on universal truths in ways that linger long after the credits roll. Nothing in Common, directed by the legendary Garry Marshall, is one of those rare, bittersweet treasures. Blending humor and heartbreak, this family dramedy showcases unforgettable performances from comedic icon Jackie Gleason, the elegant Eva Marie Saint, and a young Tom Hanks on the cusp of his Hollywood greatness. The story follows David Basner (Tom Hanks), a rising hotshot in advertising whose life takes an unexpected turn when his parents’ decades-long marriage suddenly ends. David is forced to step into unfamiliar and uncomfortable territory, becoming the reluctant mediator between his feisty, aging father, Max (Jackie Gleason), and his tender yet quietly resilient mother,...

Do You Remember These 30+ USA Network Original Horror Movies Released from 1989-2004?
Image
Before USA Network became series-focused, the cable channel delivered a steady stream of weekly original movies. Many of which were produced by McA (now NBCUniversal). And during this era — between the late 1980s and early 2000s — USA offered a variety of genres; action and suspense were the most common, but horror also came up from time to time.

Especially around Halloween.

USA Network is no longer in the business of airing these “World Premiere Movies,” horror or otherwise, and there haven’t been great strides to bring all of them to streaming or modern home video. However, the horror entries certainly have their merits as well as fans.

See if you can remember these original movies from USA Network’s horror history.

FBI Season 7's New Character Ends Its Three-Year Cast Pattern (But I'm Disappointed About The Trade-Off)
Image
The news of Tiffany's exit came shortly after another FBI season 7 cast update announced that Lisette Oliveri would be joining Jubal Valentine's team as a behavioral analyst named Syd. This was a very different type of role than the one Tiffany performed for the team, but the timing of these cast announcements suggests that Syd is a replacement for Tiffany. I'm not surprised, considering the concerning FBI update about the series' plan to rotate cast members to save money, but I'm not happy with the trade-off.

While I'm glad that FBI is breaking a three-year pattern with its latest cast update, the trade-off is disappointing. When FBI was renewed for three years in March, no major cast changes were announced. However, there was speculation about whether Tiffany Wallace (Katherine Renee Kane) would remain with the series after the season 6 ending, which involved her shooting the suspect who killed Agent Hobbs...

6 FBI Universe Characters That Deserved Better Exits
Image
The FBI franchise has a high cast turnover, resulting in disappointing final arcs for beloved characters like Scott Forrester. Goodbyes handled poorly with off-screen exits and rushed storylines have left viewers and characters without closure. Departures of key characters like Jess Lacroix and Kenny Crosby could have been handled more satisfactorily onscreen with better story arcs.

The FBI franchise has a bad habit of writing out beloved characters with little thought for viewers invested in their storylines. The original series has kept a good portion of its initial cast intact, with only Sela Ward and Ebone Noel departing early in FBI's run. However, FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International haven't been nearly as fortunate, experiencing higher cast turnover. In recent years, characters such as Scott Forrester (Luke Kleintank), Kristin Gaines (Alexa Davalos), and many more have exited the FBI franchise.

As a result, the successful connected universe has given countless characters disappointing final arcs.

Nielsen's departure may have been due to her busy schedule and involvement in other projects during the time of FBI's release. Ward's exit from FBI was scripted into the season 1 finale, with her character resigning after making a risky decision. Ward joined the show under a one-year contract.

FBI replaced Connie Nielsen with Sela Ward after its pilot episode, starting a trend of short character arcs in the franchise. FBI, which currently has 6 seasons, focuses on the day-to-day operations of the New York Field Office criminal division. Nielsen's Ellen Solberg was a figurehead of the division as Special Agent in Charge. Nielsen and her character didn't have a planned conclusion in the show, and she departed suddenly without explanation.

10 Hit-Or-Miss Directors Who've Made 1 Truly Great Movie
Image
Hit-or-miss directors can still have one truly great movie. Making just one great film is more than most achieve in their entire lives. Some hit-or-miss directors started off with incredible debut movies but failed to recapture that magic in their later career. Others gained success through so-bad-it's-good movies that left a lasting impact on popular culture. Directors like Roland Emmerich, Jamie Babbit, and Simon West have had mixed careers, but their one truly great movie, such as Independence Day, But I'm a Cheerleader, and Con Air, stands out as a significant achievement in their filmography.

Some film directors have truly disappointing filmographies, however, even a stopped clock is right twice a day, and they still managed to deliver one truly great movie. From big budget blockbuster directors to small independent filmmakers, hit-or-miss directors must be commended because even if many of their films don’t reach the heights of their greatest achievements,...

The Fugitive Director Andrew Davis Goes Behind the Scenes on the Harrison Ford Film and His Debut, Stony Island
Image
This year marks three significant anniversaries for director Andrew Davis. The acclaimed filmmaker burst onto the scene 45 years ago in 1978, making an impressive directorial debut with Stony Island, which recently marked its VOD release after all these years. The inviting film revolved around two friends who attempt to launch an R&b band. Then there’s the 30th anniversary of The Fugitive, which has been fully restored in 4K ultra high-definition format. The Harrison Ford-starring action picture stunned audiences in 1993 with its gripping drama and masterful action sequences. The story drew from the classic 1960s television series about a man wrongly accused of murdering his wife, and also starred Tommy Lee Jones. Finally, there's the 20-year anniversary of Holes, starring a young Shia Labeouf.

Davis has been prolific in between, of course. His other films, Code of Silence (with Chuck Norris), Above the Law, and Chain Reaction paved the way for The Fugitive,...

Franchises That Stopped After Two Movies
Image
The most popular movie franchises typically run for multiple installments, with some still going strong today. However, there are also times when franchises start out promising with their potential but unceremoniously end after their sophomore outing. Several reasons contributed to these franchises' sudden pauses, whether because of a lackluster box office reception, critical backlash, or plans for a third movie falling apart.

These hopeful franchises could have kept going, but low reception of the second film or failed attempts at creating a third prevented that from happening. From Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy to The Amazing Spider-Man films starring Andrew Garfield, these franchises pulled the plug after two movies.

10 Visually Stunning Sci-Fi Movie Scenes That Weren't CGI
Image
Practical effects can create visually powerful and memorable scenes, as demonstrated by the destruction of the White House in Independence Day. The commitment to realism in films like Apollo 13 and Inception, through the use of practical methods instead of CGI, adds authenticity and impact. Filmmakers like Christopher Nolan prioritize tangible artistry and real human energy, ensuring a genuine cinematic experience that surpasses digital tricks.

In today's sci-fi films, fancy CGI and special effects usually steal the spotlight, but not always. Think Marvel Cinematic Universe or Star Wars; two franchises that are all about digital dazzle. But there's a rare breed of sci-fi that doesn't heavily rely on flashy set pieces such as those. Before the advancement of film technologies, many successful films weren’t equipped with CGI capabilities, but still wowed with unique, creative techniques. It's a choice that screams authenticity and adds a dose of creativity and realism to the mix.

The Fugitive Was The Rare Action Movie To Get Nominated For Best Picture – And It Deserved It
Image
In a world where feature film adaptations of hit TV shows are extremely common, a film like Andrew Davis' "The Fugitive" might not look all that unusual, at least at a glance. The 30-year-old film, based on one of the highest-rated television series in history, was a "wrong man" thriller in the classic Hitchcockian mold, starring one of the industry's most successful action heroes, Harrison Ford. It's got a series of thrilling set pieces with epic stunts and derring-do. The director also wasn't a festival darling — he was a genre guy whose biggest claim to fame before "The Fugitive" was two Steven Seagal movies.

"The Fugitive" was financially successful, and even the contemporary reviews were good. But if you haven't seen it — or if you haven't seen it lately — you could be forgiven for wondering why "The Fugitive" wasn't just a hit, but was also nominated for the Academy Award...
