In 1981, Harrison Ford traded in the galaxy that is far far away for a fedora and whip to help him swing through the 1930s as Indiana Jones. He first appears in "Raiders of the Lost Ark," which includes some of the coolest moments in the "Indiana Jones" franchise. It was the beginning of a new era for Ford that lasted well into the 2020s, and the franchise's success is not just based on action alone. It's about telling stories that connect the past to the present while the mission focuses on finding a way to save the future. Yes, Indiana can be arrogant and all-knowing, but he is always focused on saving artifacts that are essential in telling the story of humankind.
He's not the only character who is using history to help save the future. While the "Indiana Jones" franchise has plenty of adventures for fans to enjoy, there...

Baltimore native John Waters is filmdom’s pencil-mustached titan of trash who has spent a lifetime of dumpster-diving into a vat of bad taste, sleaze, kinky gross-outs, over-the-top camp, maudlin melodramatics, sick jokes, taboo sexuality, vulgarity and bizarre personalities. At least he has a fabulous sense of humor. The director is a New York University film school dropout who instead became a scholar of transgressive, envelope-shredding cinema, influenced by the directorial likes of Herschell Gordon Lewis, Federico Fellini, William Castle, Douglas Sirk and Ingmar Bergman. Early on, Waters assembled a stock company of players from suburban Baltimore who he would the Dreamlanders, including Mink Stole and Edith Massey.
But Waters would find his true muse and favorite leading lady in his childhood friend, Glenn Milstead, a drag queen whose alter-ego was known as Divine. When Milstead died at age 42 from an enlarged heart in 1988, Waters' output went more mainstream, with...

Upcoming comedy The Roses, starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch as a warring couple, arrives in August. Have a trailer:
On paper, everything about Searchlight’s upcoming remake of the 1989 dark comedy, The War Of The Roses looks to be in order. You get Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch as the unhappy couple, delivering withering put-downs in a steadily escalating conflict that gets rather out of hand.
Plus, it has Jay Roach at the helm, a filmmaker who knows how to craft a big studio comedy, not to mention a script from Poor Things and The Favourite writer Tony McNamara. This doesn’t look like it will have the frisson of the Danny DeVito film that starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, though. The original War Of The Roses was a continuation of the chemistry the duo perfected in 1984’s Romancing The Stone and the following year’s sequel, The Jewel Of The Nile.

The annual trade show hosted by Cinema United, CinemaCon is where the nation’s theater owners spend a week listening to sales pitches from Hollywood’s most important people: studio executives, Oscar-winning filmmakers, and Tom Cruise. Here are the standout moments, trailer, and highs and lows from CineamaCon 2025.
Most Important Movie
CinemaCon closed with a flourish on Thursday night, with a first look at Avatar: Fire and Ash, James Cameron’s forthcoming blockbuster. In some ways, the preview — with its exceptional visuals and pacing typical of an Avatar film — felt like a Brigadoon for the nation’s theater owners and its studio partners. This year’s CinemaCon was marked by notable unease for the motion picture industry, with sagging box office totals sparking debate about theatrical windows and the future of several studio executives uncertain. The assumption is that Cameron’s Avatar will once again swoop in to save the...

Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman have a not-so-cordial split in the first trailer for The Roses, the forthcoming remake of The War of the Roses.
Jay Roach directed the new movie from a script by Tony McNamara. Hitting theaters Aug. 29 from Searchlight Pictures, the project’s cast includes Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, Belinda Bromilow and Kate McKinnon.
The ribald footage shared at CinemaCon shows Cumberbatch and Colman as a happy couple who quickly fall apart — and seem to have fun doing just that. “I suppose sometimes I do hate you,” Cumberbatch says to Colman in the trailer before clarifying, “Sporadic hatred.”
As things sour, Colman’s character quips about her hubby, “Sometimes he’s got his cock in me, and I can’t really tell.” Soon, Cumberbatch gets an unwelcome surprise while he’s soaking in the bath tub.

Big changes might be coming to the Tardis. Word on the street is that Ncuti Gatwa, the current Doctor in ‘Doctor Who,’ could be stepping away after his second series. Industry insider DanielRPK dropped this bombshell on his Patreon, claiming Gatwa’s got his sights set on a bigger prize—Hollywood. If true, it’s a bold shift for the actor who’s only just started wielding the sonic screwdriver.
Gatwa took over as the Fifteenth Doctor in 2023, following Jodie Whittaker’s exit. His first full series aired last year, and I’ve got to say, he brought a fresh energy to the role. Born in Rwanda and raised in Scotland, he’s already made a name for himself with standout performances—like playing Eric in ‘Sex Education’ on Netflix and popping up as a Ken in the 2023 ‘Barbie’ movie alongside Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Oscar-winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite) and BAFTA and Emmy winner Benedict Cumberbatch are set to star in The Roses, which, per Variety, has an official release date of Aug. 29.
Billed as a dark comedy-drama, The Roses is being directed by Jay Roach, who directed the Austin Powers trilogy, Meet the Parents, and Dinner for Schmucks. Benedict Cumberbatch remains as busy as ever these days, with no less than three movies premiering in 2025. There's a drama (The Thing with Feathers), an espionage thriller (The Phoenician Scheme), and a remake of the '80s classic The War of the Roses, which has now set a summer release date. Simply titled The Roses, Cumberbatch stars in the film alongside Academy Award-winner Olivia Colman, with the duo playing a married couple whose life seems picture-perfect on the surface, but underneath is anything but.
Per Searchlight Pictures, The Roses will hit theaters on August 29, 2025, the same day as the long-awaited remake of The Toxic Avenger. Directed by Danny DeVito and based on the novel by Warren Adler, the original The War of the Roses starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner debuted all the way back in 1989, and earned each of its two stars a Golden Globe nomination. The Roses is a remake of War Of The Roses, starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch. It’s arriving this very summer.
While we often roll our eyes at Hollywood’s lack of originality and continued reliance on remakes, we’re looking forward to Fox Searchlight’s upcoming remake of the 1989 dark comedy, The War Of The Roses.
It has Jay Roach at the helm, a filmmaker who knows how to craft a big studio comedy, not to mention a script from Poor Things and The Favourite writer Tony McNamara, who imbued both of those films humour that ranged from slapstick to biting to outright shocking.
Also, this is an anglicised take on the Danny DeVito film that starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in a continuation of the love-hate onscreen pairing the duo perfected in 1984’s Romancing The Stone and its sequel, 1985’s The Jewel Of The Nile.

Nancy Cartwright has made enough money playing Bart Simpson to buy as many elephants and all-syrup Squishees as she pleases. But over the course of her career, the actress has lent her voice to a ton of other projects, including classic shows such Animaniacs, Rugrats and Kim Possible, as well as less-than-classic shows like the Saturday morning cartoon adaptation of Problem Child that nobody remembers.
But perhaps most surprisingly, it was Cartwright’s voice that traumatized a generation of kids in the iconic ‘80s family film Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
For those who don’t remember, or who have actively suppressed the memory, when the evil Judge Doom is explaining his plan to control the toon population using a lethal toxic substance known as “Dip,” he demonstrates its effects with a helpless animated shoe. And we were all forced to watch as the poor little guy is slowly, painfully dissolved...

Andy Serkis has set his sights on another tale of rebellion. The Planet of the Apes star is trading in primates for pigs in his upcoming animated adaptation of George Orwell's 1945 satirical allegory Animal Farm. As the director and possible star of the upcoming Animal Farm adaptation, Serkis has cleared the air about his mysterious and long-awaited animated directorial debut.
Speaking with Collider, screenwriter Nicholas Stoller said Serkis' Animal Farm will be a "darkly comic" yet family-friendly animated tale that puts a modern spin on the classic political satire.

Everyone knows the sound of Kathleen Turner’s voice.
Her sexy, smoky rasp most famously gave life to Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and although that was her first animated role, it definitely wouldn’t be her last. A few years later, she voiced Malibu Stacy creator Stacy Lovell on The Simpsons. A few years after that, she became the voice of Hank Hill’s boss’ wife, Liz Strickland, on King of the Hill, who famously tried to seduce Hank. And her voice career continues today with a recent guest spot on Rick and Morty and with the upcoming animated film Animal Farm, based on the famous George Orwell novel.
It was her time on King of the Hill that we set out to talk about during a recent phone interview, but that inevitably led to a discussion about her voice career as a whole and how that...

As an actor defined by his immense screen impact and his expansive versatility—as well as a celebrity adored for his charming personality and his humble candor—Stanley Tucci has admirers aplenty all over the world. It is easy to deduce that another reason for his widespread popularity is his exceptional and rich filmography, one that dates back to the mid 1980s, with his feature film debut as “Soldier” in the 1985 comedy flick Prizzi’s Honor starring Jack Nicholson and Kathleen Turner.

Sofia Coppola has big plans for the 25th anniversary of her directorial debut “The Virgin Suicides.”
The 2000 feature, which premiered at Cannes, cemented Coppola as the director for young female angst. Kirsten Dunst led the film adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’ 1993 novel that centers on the five fictional Lisbon sisters who kill themselves one by one. Kathleen Turner and James Woods play their overprotective, religious parents; Dunst stars as middle sister Lux. The film, despite grossing just under $5 million in the U.S. against a $9 million budget, later became of a cult classic that was synonymous with the melancholic realization that teenage longing and ennui can extend into adulthood.

The Godfather Part III, the final chapter in Francis Ford Coppola’s epic Godfather trilogy, was given a wide theatrical release on December 25, 1990 – and as far as director Luca Guadagnino is concerned, that release date was the perfect choice for the film, as it happens to be his go-to choice for Christmas viewing.
When IndieWire asked Guadagnino what he likes to watch over the holidays, he replied, “[The Godfather Part III] is the best of the three for me. Part II is too perfect and The Godfather is too legendary. But Part III has the ambition of a man who did everything and the fragility of the man who is going toward this older part of his work and his life. And it’s full of this longing melancholy. As proven in David Fincher’s 2023 Netflix thriller The Killer, few have a cooler “I shall hunt you down and kill you” look than Michael Fassbender. Though perhaps he’s been matched by Cate Blanchett, his co-star in Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming thriller Black Bag.
The trailer, which just debuted on Tuesday morning, shows the two as elite London-based intelligence operatives (or something) and also a married couple. Security footage reveals that Blanchett’s character is in cahoots with some potential baddies, so Fassbender is tasked with taking her down. The film looks like a more serious spin on the Doug Liman action-comedy Mr. and Mrs. Smith starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, recently relaunched as an Amazon Prime Video series with Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch has teased his upcoming remake of Danny DeVito's beloved 35-year-old satirical black comedy-drama film The War of Roses, calling it "a joy to make." Announced earlier this year, Cumberbatch's The Roses is directed by Jay Roach and also stars MCU alum Olivia Colman.
Per Variety, Cumberbatch discussed The Roses and his other upcoming projects at the Red Sea Film Festival. The actor stated that the movie had "pretty cool ingredients" in his "amazing" co-star Colman and Tony McNamara's "great script." The War of the Roses reimagining will mark Cumberbatch's first role as the lead in a comedy, and he has found the experience gratifying. "We'll see if it'll get there, but it was a joy to make," he said. Produced by Searchlight Pictures, the movie's cast includes Ncuti Gatwa, Kate McKinnon, Andy Samberg, Sunita Mani, Zoë Chao, Jamie Demetriou, and Belinda Bromilow.

Benedict Cumberbatch is far from done with playing Doctor Strange. The actor, who is at the Red Sea Film Festival with “We Live in Time” — produced by his company SunnyMarch — called the superhero a “complex man motivated by a need to control everything at any cost.” “I am interested in seeing where these costs take him,” he said. “There is a lot more to play and it’s very exciting.”
The actor also briefly touched upon his upcoming film with Wes Anderson, “The Phoenician Scheme,” saying that it was a different experience from their previous collaboration in “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” in that “this was just character” instead of stepping into a meta-narrative based on pre-existing literary work. Of Jay Roach’s “The Roses,” Cumberbatch said the film had “pretty cool ingredients” in “amazing” Olivia Colman and a “great script” by Yorgos Lanthimos’s frequent collaborator Tony McNamara.

Remember the 1980s? The decade of big hair, neon everything, and VHS tapes taking over the video shop. Aside from the flashy pop culture, this was also a great time for thrilling, edge-of-your-seat movies. The 1980s provided a wealth of classic 80s thrillers that redefined what it meant to feel suspenseful rather than just keeping viewers wondering. From dark crime dramas to mind-bending 1980s suspense movies that made your heart race, this era became the best place for directors who wanted to try new things and moviegoers who wanted to be shocked.
Why did the best 80s thriller movies come out at such a great time? The genre wasn’t just one thing but a wide range of movies. It had dark, twisty psychological thrillers that peeled back the layers of the mind (think Fatal Attraction), gritty crime sagas dripping with danger, and every once in a while, a heart-pounding story inspired by true events.
