CSI: Vegas and NCIS: Hawai‘i got canceled within one week of each other this season, marking disappointing results for two top TV franchises. Both CSI and NCIS ranked as the No. 1 scripted broadcast TV program in the United States at one point, and both of those shows spawned successful spinoffs… and at least one that was not so successful. Dick Wolf can relate. His long-running Law & Order franchise has had its share of flops, and even his successful One Chicago universe has had one of its shows flicker out. Criminal Minds, meanwhile, suffered losses with its first two offshoots. Read about all of these short-lived spinoffs below. Law & Order: Trial by Jury (2005–2006) Bebe Neuwirth, Amy Carlson, Kirk Acevedo, Fred Thompson, and Scott Cohen starred in this fourth Law & Order series, which also marked the final screen appearance of ...

As the saying goes, ‘every great man is inspired by another great man to reach their full potential’. Well, this sentiment could not ring truer than in the case of Gene Hackman & Kevin Costner.
For the most part, viewers recognized Costner from the hit drama series Yellowstone, but he was popular throughout the 1990s for other roles as well. Beginning his career as an extra in low-budget productions, he progressed to more mainstream roles in acclaimed flicks, including Dances with Wolves and No Way Out.

Besides, he has shown a tremendous amount of endurance. Costner got up and over the critically panned films Waterworld and The Postman, which could have easily ended his career. And later, he spellbound audiences once again with his exceptional Yellowstone performance on the Paramount Network.

The doctor is in … the Michigan Senate race. Actor Hill Harper is setting his sights on politics.
The Good Doctor star on Monday announced he is running for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat, challenging U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin for the Democratic nomination.
In an interview with the Associated Press ahead of the announcement, the actor, who owns a home and a coffee shop in Detroit, described himself as a small-business owner, union member and activist and explained how not being a “career politician” would give him an advantage in Congress. “It’s not about party. It’s about people feeling represented,” Harper said. “And being an independent voice in the U.S. Senate is something I believe Michiganders want right now.”
Harper has had a 30-year career in television, co-starring in series such as City of Angels, CSI: NY, Covert Affairs, Limitless and Homeland. He has played Dr.

The Western is back, again. After it died. Prior to which it came back again.
As film historian and co-host of the How the West was Cast podcast, Andrew Patrick Nelson argues, journalists and historians love to write about the Western being dead just as much as they enjoy writing about its resurgence. However, this ebb and flow is part of a predictable life cycle that has kept the genre alive for over a century.
The origins of the frontier narrative on our public consciousness dates to 1845, when John L. O’Sullivan coined the phrase “manifest destiny” in an essay about America’s perceived right to expansion. As the Wild West came to an end and the frontier became settled, Frederick Jackson Turner introduced his “frontier thesis” in 1893. Turner hit on the binary conflicts that make the Western as a mythological place so engaging. The frontier, as he defined it,...

Former “Law & Order cast member Elisabeth Röhm will direct an episode of the NBC procedural this season, NBC announced on Monday.
The episode, titled “Only the Lonely,” follows the investigation and trial in the murder of a high-level crisis consultant, who made many enemies in her career.
Röhm starred as Ada Serena Southerlyn from 2001 to 2005. Longtime viewers may remember her surprising exit, in which her character was fired by District Attorney Arthur Branch (Fred Dalton Thompson) for not being hard-nosed enough. Her line, “Is it because I’m a lesbian?” was the first time anyone had mentioned that fact that Serena was gay on the series.

Actors and politics have always had a connection, whether it be the myriad of dramas and thrillers set in the halls of power that arrive on annual basis or the stars of stage and screen themselves making the jump into running for office. Former Western stalwart Ronald Reagan ended up becoming President of the United States, while action megastar Arnold Schwarzenegger spent over seven years as the Governor of California.
On top of that, Predator star Jesse Ventura was the Governor of Minnesota between 1999 and 2003, veteran character actor Fred Thompson became a Senator, Clint Eastwood had a brief stint as Mayor of Carmel-by-the-sea over 30 years ago, and Dwayne Johnson has constantly refused to rule himself out of potentially running as a Presidential candidate somewhere down the line.

Just when you think you've seen - and heard - it all from Donald Trump, he comes out with another surprise. This week, it was his head-turning admission during a speech in North Carolina that he regrets some of things he's said on the 2016 presidential campaign trail in "the of heat of debate." It was a rare acknowledgement by Trump that he'd made a mistake (he told People just last fall that saying "sorry" is something he "never likes to do") and many politicos are attributing it to the quick work of his new campaign manager, Republican pollster and campaign veteran Kellyanne Conway,...

Hell or High Water is a no-nonsense, confidently executed thriller, operating in the same tone and terrain as Rolling Thunder and No Country for Old Men. Two brothers — Toby (Chris Pine) and Tanner (Ben Foster) — pull off a series of bank robberies across Texas, raising money for a purpose revealed halfway through the film. Even before that disclosure, the subtext is firmly on economic dispossession and the role financial institutions play in suckering the small customers they ostensibly service (this may well be the first film in which a reverse mortgage — pace the late Fred Thompson — serves as a major […]...

In the hierarchy of significance in what made news this past week, the sudden availability of the entirety of Albert Brooks’ output of feature films as a writer-director via Netflix Streaming may not carry the urgency of, say, the alarming continuance of African-American deaths under police fire, the attack on a peaceful protest against police violence by shooters who killed five law enforcement officers and wounded several more in Dallas, the ongoing partisan bloviating inspired by the FBI’s decision to not charge Hilary Clinton with federal crimes, or the frightening clown circus of offenses that characterizes the dawning of each new day in Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. But art can, among many other things, provide a momentary respite from pain, sometimes even while examining some of the more frustrating, self-centric and petty dissonances within our own, or someone’s else’s worldview, and in this Brooks’ films at...

Senator Fred Thompson, star of such films as Die Hard 2: Die Harder, The Hunt For Red October, and Days Of Thunder, has passed away at the age of 73. Known as both an iconic Republican senator, as well as a hard nosed authority figure in most of the roles he's played, Senator Thompson passed away due to a recurrence of Lymphoma. He was surrounded by his family at his home in Nashville, and is survived by his children and his wife, Jeri. Interestingly enough, Senator Thompson's career as an actor started because of his real life work on the case of Marie Ragghianti - a former head of the Tennessee Board of Pardons and Paroles. When Ragghianti was wrongfully removed from her appointment after refusing to release prisoners that had bribed Tennessee's governor for their freedom, Thompson helped fight and win her case as her attorney. With that victory, Thompson...

When I left Tampa, it was the crack of dawn. I was in the passenger's seat of the Chevette that Scott Swan owned, and we were on our way to California to be rich and famous. I was 20 years old. I thought I had all the answers. I had a screenplay called "The President Must Die!" with me that I was sure was going to be produced by the following summer with an all-star cast. We had all of them picked. Harrison Ford, Robert DeNiro, Robin Williams. Scott and I had spent the entire spring writing it, and we were done. Absolutely, completely, positively done. It was perfect. It was going to be a huge hit. This was the logical next step. This wasn't our first script, either. We had written a script together called "Moondance" during my first year of college, and a script called "A Weekend Away" during my second year of college.

This summer, my movie ”Persecuted” will be released on 600 screens nationwide. Unlike “Son of God,” “Noah” or ”Moses,” there are no Bible robes in Persecuted, but my story — about a Televangelist turned fugitive, who refuses to support legislation favored by the political establishment — touches on religion and the values that millions of Americas hold dear. I have received feedback from some questioning how the Catholic priest that Fred Thompson plays can have a son (hint: he had a past before entering the priesthood), while others have raised eyebrows at the very notion of religious persecution in the U.S. Some have also expressed concern.

The stage adaptation of A Time to Kill is based on John Grisham’s first novel, which, next to the breakneck legal thrillers that would follow it, presents as grounded and anthropological. But the story still bears the mark of Grisham, whose gift for the vivid refuses any submission to subtlety. It’s the early eighties in small-town Mississippi, and two racist rednecks (Lee Sellars and Dashiell Eaves) brutally rape and nearly murder a 10-year-old black girl. Her father, Carl Lee Hailey (John Douglas Thompson) fears the perps will walk or do light time, institutional racism being what it is - so he methodically guns them...

Chicago – Scott Derrickson’s “Sinister” was beloved in certain horror-loving circles (including a rave from our very own Adam Fendelman) and it’s indicative of the state of the genre that this film’s flaws were overlooked simply because it’s so undeniably vastly superior to junk like “Paranormal Activity 4” and “The Last Exorcism, Part II.” There are some great ideas in “Sinister” and a truly strong central performance from the always-good Ethan Hawke but the film meanders at 110 minutes and the final act proves that pacing problems will be the most horrific thing about a poorly-written horror film.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
I was totally with the first act of “Sinister,” a film about a true crime writer who moves into a house with a mysterious past only to discover that he’s in the line of supernatural fire himself. There are some nicely creepy moments and truly shocking imagery (most of it on grainy film,...

Sinister was developed for an estimated $3 million and earned over $77 million at the box office, so it was no surprise to hear that a sequel is moving forward. Director Scott Derrickson talked about the sequel last month, but a new report confirms some of the details.
Deadline reports that Blumhouse Productions is officially moving forward on the project, with Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill returning to co-write the story. While everything is still in the early planning stages, it’s likely that a new director will be brought in, with Derrickson staying involved as a producer, along with Jason Blum.
Sinister was released to theaters late last year and is now available on Blu-ray/DVD. The movie stars Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, James Ransone, Fred Dalton Thompson, Nicholas King, Clare Foley, Victoria Leigh, Juliet Rylance and Michael Hall D’Addario.

Best of the Week Sinister - Summit - Blu-ray and DVD Director: Scott Derrickson Cast: Ethan Hawke, Fred Dalton Thompson, James Ransone,Michael Hall D'Addario, Rob Riley. Full cast + crew Sinister is the kind of genuinely scary horror movie that's so effective you just want to curse at it. It's not only the best horror movie of 2012, but one of the best in years, making excellent use of that rare combination of interesting characters with a creepy premise. There are a handful of movies a year that pull off the latter, but it's rare that they also nail the former, and it's the difference maker between a movie that can freak you out while you're watching it and one that'll pop into your brain and shoot down your spine...

When Sinister was released in October 2012, we had the pleasure of chatting with co-writer C. Robert Cargill and co-writer/director Scott Derrickson about their gut-punch thriller. With the film's home video release this week, we thought it the perfect time to catch up with the duo.
Derrickson and Cargill (read our previous interview with them here) spoke more about the mythology they created for Sinister as well as what's been the most surprising aspect of their collaboration since they began writing the project together not all that long ago. We also heard from the pair about a potential Sinister sequel and what sort of pitfalls they want to avoid when creating a follow-up to what was by far one of the more intense horror flicks to grace the big screen in 2012.
Be warned, though; the following interview with Derrickson and Cargill does contain some spoilers so if you haven't seen Sinister yet,...

Sinister
Stars: Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, James Ransone, Vincent D’Onofrio, Fred Dalton Thompson, Clare Foley, Michael Hall D’Addario | Written by Scott Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill | Directed by Scott Derrickson
The “found footage” flick. Possibly the most derided genre of horror, even more so than the slasher movie these days. With film after film seeing light of day via DVD you’d think found footage films are heading for burn out. But then along comes Sinister. Playing on the “found footage” conceit, the movie is however less a found footage film than a film about found footage.
If Paranormal Activity and Insidious captured the imaginations of cinema audiences everywhere then Sinister is surely set to do the same. With a similar “found footage meets haunted house” premise to the aforementioned films, the movie tells the story of true-crime writer Ellison who, desperate to repeat the success of his earlier work,...

After the box office success and positive audience response for Sinister, it doesn’t surprise us to hear that a sequel may be headed our way. During a recent interview, director Scott Derrickson confirmed to SciFiNow that he is interested in seeing a sequel made, and talks about what his involvement in the project would be:
“We’re in the process of doing that…. I certainly want to write the script and be involved with it as the producer – I would possibly direct the next one, we’ll see… But I don’t see myself just handing the franchise over to just anybody and letting it go… If it goes on – then maybe – but I want to see it start its process on the right foot at least, and always have some say and have some involvement in it.”
Sinister was a Blumhouse production, which was developed for an estimated $3 million and earned $65.4 million worldwide.
