Lieutenant Dan of Forrest Gump or Detective Mac Taylor of CSI: NY has had a career that spans over four decades now. But behind this popular face, there is a man whose life might surprise even his biggest fans.

Sinise was born in Blue Island, Illinois, and has built an impressive career as an actor, director, producer, and musician. He has won Emmy Awards, Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. But beyond the show business, he is a humanitarian, a veteran supporter, and a man of many talents. Let’s explore 10 such lesser-known facts about Gary Sinise.

Gary Sinise Pauses Acting to Help Son Through Rare Cancer Battle
Gary Sinise
Gary Sinise stepped back from on-screen work in 2020 when his son Mac received a chordoma diagnosis, a rare bone cancer affecting about 300 people in the U.S. each year. Best known for playing Lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump and leading CSI: NY across nine seasons, Sinise left projects including Joe Bell, I Still Believe and Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why Season 4 to care for his family.

Mac began treatment in 2018, and Sinise took charge of logistics and emotional support, describing himself as his son’s “air traffic controller.” He shielded Mac from the stress of appointments and pursued any possible breakthrough. “You’re trying to take the pain away,” he told People magazine. After Mac’s death last year at 33, Sinise said he holds his daughters “a lot tighter,” reflecting a shift in priorities that makes time away from home more difficult.

Sinise’s wife Moira faced her own battle with...

Gary Sinise Stopped Acting in 2020 Amid Son’s Cancer Battle, Says a Comeback ‘May Come Along but It’s Harder to Leave Home. I Just Want to Be Around Family’
Image
Gary Sinise recently opened up to People magazine about his decision to leave Hollywood behind five years ago amid his son’s battle with a rare bone cancer. Sinise, well known for his Oscar-nominated role as Lieutenant Dan in “Forrest Gump” and for headlining all nine seasons of “CSI: NY,” hasn’t acted since a trio of 2020 releases: The films “Joe Bell” and “I Still Believe” and his supporting turn on Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why” Season 4.

Sinise’s son, Mac, was diagnosed with chordoma in 2018. The rare form of bone cancer only affects 300 people in the U.S. each year. The actor said he “stopped acting” in 2020 and “started putting everything I had into trying to find a miracle for Mac.” Sinise lost Mac last year at 33 years old.

“Something may come along and it’ll be right, but it’s harder to leave home now,” Sinise said when...

Explosions, Aliens and Dyer’s Fists Lead Legend’s May Madness
Image
Legend has unveiled its packed May 2025 premiere schedule, delivering an ambitious run of science fiction, fantasy, and action classics that stretch across time, space, and genres.

At the top of the pile is James Cameron’s rarely broadcast deep-sea thriller The Abyss, which makes a rare UK television appearance on Sunday 25 May at 9pm. This underwater epic about alien intelligence, nuclear paranoia, and human resilience remains one of Cameron’s most visually arresting and emotionally charged films.

But for those who prefer their sci-fi terrain a little more subterranean than subaquatic, Legend has curated a trio of matinee premieres that mine classic adventure with gusto. Kicking off with Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959) on 5 May, followed by Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961) and disaster milestone The Poseidon Adventure (1972), the channel dives deep into cult cinematic archaeology.

‘Reindeer Games’ at 25: Why John Frankheimer’s Maligned Would-Be Christmas Cult Classic Deserved Better
Image
On paper, the heist movie “Reindeer Games” should have been a slam-dunk. It had action master John Frankenheimer at the helm, a buzzy cast of rising stars and reliable character actors chewing the scenery, and a clever premise in which a crew dressed as Santa Clauses robs a casino at Christmastime.

Yet “Reindeer Games” landed with a thud 25 years ago — critics mostly hated it, and it flailed at the box office, opening at number three behind the kids’ movie “Snow Day” and the Bruce Willis vehicle “The Whole Nine Yards” before disappearing from theaters entirely just a few weeks later. Was it really that bad, or just a victim of bad timing? And was there a better film to be found in the footage Frankenheimer shot before test screenings led to months of reshoots and editing-room meddling by financiers Harvey and Bob Weinstein?

These questions can largely be answered via...

No, 'Apollo 13' Did Not Lead to Netflix
Image
Apollo 13, NASA's third planned moon landing mission after Apollos 11 and 12, saw an extremely unlucky and nearly fatal problem become a triumphant display of human ingenuity. In April 1970, after suffering a catastrophic mechanical failure that rendered astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swigert unable to reach the moon, the three men were able to successfully turn around and land their stricken ship safely in the Pacific Ocean, leading NASA to dub the mission "a successful failure." Two and a half decades later, filmmaker Ron Howard accurately reenacted the harrowing NASA mission in his 1995 film Apollo 13, starring Tom Hanks as Lovell, which was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Two years later, another embarrassing failure involving Apollo 13 (the film) would lead to an incredible success, when Reed Hastings found a VHS copy of Apollo 13 that he had borrowed from his local Blockbuster long ago and forgotten to return.

Critically Acclaimed Horror Filmmaker Reveals Which Stephen King Novel Is the 'Only One' for Him
Image
Stephen King is one of the most prolific and influential authors of all time, and the authority on the horror and sci-fi genre. His books have been adapted into countless films and television projects, some of them even more than once.

Many iconic filmmakers have attempted to adapt King's works, and some of them were successful, like frequent collaborator Mike Flanagan, and others were not on King's favorite list due to the many changes to their material. One horror veteran auteur who hasn't attempted to adapt one of King's works is James Wan, famous for works like Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring. In a new appearance on The Kingcast, Wan revealed that the "only" novel for him to adapt is one of King's most ambitious works: The Stand.

If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic horror fiction, then you know there are two essential novels that everyone must read: Stephen King's The Stand, and Robert McCammon's Swan Song. Led by Officer Paul Edgecomb (Hanks), the group receives John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a new inmate who has been sentenced to death for a horrible crime. Coffey doesn't behave like a murderer and claims that he's innocent. Edgecomb eventually realizes that the convict even possesses an extraordinary power to heal people. The Best Christmas Action Movies: From Die Hard to Lethal Weapon and beyond!
Image
It’s that time of year again. The chestnuts are roasting, the eggnog is nogging, and some of us are getting ready for a house full of people that will turn this holiday season into a stressful one. So what do you do when you want to get into that merry spirit but also feel a slight bit of homicidal rage at your mother-in-law who just won’t shut up?

10. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969)

Yes, a James Bond movie took place at Christmas, and it’s a doozy. Arguably the greatest James Bond film, this one stars George Lazenby in his sole outing as 007. Now, I know what you’re thinking. How is George Lazenby the star of the greatest Bond movie ever? The fact is, even if his performance is so-so, the film itself is fantastic. And it’s the movie where James Bond gets married. So,...

12 Movies That Should Be Re-Released In IMAX After Interstellar
Image
In case you haven't heard, Christopher Nolan's deeply heartfelt space drama, "Interstellar," was recently re-released in IMAX to celebrate its 10th anniversary, and it has become a box office hit all over again. Upon its announcement, the film's entire one-week-only run quickly sold out across 166 screens, grossing a higher per-theater average than box office juggernauts like "Wicked" and "Moana 2." Tickets became so hard to find that they were being scalped and price gouged on the secondary market, like cinema's Taylor Swift. In response, IMAX has since extended the run twice over, capitalizing on the film's strong word-of-mouth and turning it into one of the year's must-see films... again!

The return of "Interstellar" proves why IMAX is the future of filmgoing. The company is estimated to earn over $1.2 billion in revenue this year, somehow surpassing their unprecedented $1.06 billion gross from 2023. However, it isn't just IMAX that is bringing in the big bucks.

What Happened to Reindeer Games?
Image
With the holidays in full swing, it’s time to unwrap the sack and ask point blank: What is the all-time Best Worst Christmas action movie? Invasion USA? Money Train? Maybe the recently released Red One? With plenty of gifts to sift through, John Frankenheimer’s Reindeer Games instantly stands out as the ultimate fun, so-bad-it’s-good yuletide action affair. Even the great Charlize Theron, who has become Hollywood’s most hardened action heroine in the interim, told Esquire Magazine in 2008 that Reindeer Games was the worst movie she ever made, stating:

“Reindeer Games Was a bad, bad, bad movie. But I got to work with John Frannkenheimer. I wasn’t lying to myself. That’s why I did it.”

Indeed, every serious cinephile knows full well that Frankenheimer helmed some of the best cross-genre movies in the 1960s and 1970s, including such minor and major classics as The Young Savages,...

Why Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders Was Canceled (& Why It Was So Controversial)
Image
Even fans who have watched Criminal Minds from beginning to end might not know that there are two spinoff shows besides the mothership and the reboot series. However, there's a reason why they're not often talked about. Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders attempted to recreate the main show's success by exploring international crime. Introduced softly in an episode titled "Beyond Borders" in Season 10, the spinoff series revolved around the FBI's international division to save Americans who get into trouble on foreign soil.

David Rossi also crossed over to support the launch of the spinoff series in the official pilot, "The Harmful One." However, despite the network's effort to get viewers invested in the series, it was eventually canceled after controversy, backlash, and a drop in viewership. Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders is a spinoff show that the network doesn't want fans to remember. In fact, the two times CBS tried to duplicate...

Mel Gibson's Rogert Ebert-Praised 'Ransom' Streaming for Free on Tubi
Image
Mel Gibson’s career has been a rollercoaster ride of successes and failures punctuated by some unpopular opinions and controversial moments. However, back in 1996 Gibson was still banging out some of his best work. This includes the action thriller Ransom, which has scored a huge resurgence on Tubi since arriving on the free streaming platform recently.

The film stars Gibson as Tom Mullen, a wealthy airline owner whose life is upended when his son, Sean, is kidnapped. Director Ron Howard delivers a blistering fast-paced race against time, which comes with several twist endings and strong performances from Gibson, Rene Russo, and Gary Sinise. Almost thirty years on, the film’s arrival on Tubi has underscored the constant demand for action movies, both old and new, on streaming platforms, and how very few pass by without a stop on a Top 10 chart somewhere.

10 Best Horror Miniseries Of All Time, Ranked
Image
The horror genre, particularly in a miniseries format, continues to rise in popularity year after year. The best of these produce jaw-dropping and heart-pounding moments that are hard to match with other genres. Rather than a traditional film, where the build-up, middle, and climax have to play out in a brisk feature-length time, in a series, there are no such constraints. This allows creators and directors time to let their storyline develop fully. This freedom allows the intense payoffs of intricate, layered stories, character development, and horrifying elements that make the best of these horror shows so unforgettable.

Though many talented hands go into each and every production, two stand above the rest, with horror stalwarts author Stephen King and filmmaker Mike Flanagan helping create many of the best horror shows of all time. Shows like It and the first part of one of the best horror anthologies, The Haunting of Hill House,...

Where’s Ransom? The Ron Howard-Mel Gibson thriller is another hard-to-find movie
Image
Yesterday, I wrote a story about how one of my favourite Thanksgiving movies, Dutch, seems to be nearly impossible to find nowadays, with the out-of-print DVD and Blu-ray pretty pricey and the movie not streaming at all on any service (although some readers noted it used to be on HBO Max). I’ve written at length about movies that are hard to find, but just how popular some of the missing titles are shocks me. It’s gotten to the point where niche titles, or at least ones with some kind of cult behind them, are often easier to find than formerly popular ones. Consider the fact that just today, Michael Mann’s The Keep, which never even got a DVD release, has just been announced for 4K Blu-ray. I was pondering this very thing when I received a text from a friend of the site, Paul Shirey, who used...

10 Problematic Movies That Somehow Still Won Awards

The Academy Awards are often seen as a litmus test for the quality of a movie, with those that get nominated and win awards being the most important films of a given year. But the movies that win Oscars do not always stand the test of time, especially when the more problematic elements of a movie's plot or characterization are put under a modern lens.

Movies that were hailed in their day as being important works of art are under more scrutiny in 2024. Many movies that ran the table at the Academy Awards in years past do not look so good when seen by modern audiences.

Gary Sinise Opens Up About Leaving Hollywood to Care for Family During Cancer Battles
Gary Sinise
Gary Sinise, an Oscar-nominated actor, has discussed why he decided to leave Hollywood. He has described a very personal story of family care and loss. In a recent interview, the 69-year-old star talked about how he had to stop playing in 2019 because of health problems in his family.

Sinise’s wife Moira Harris and son Mac were both diagnosed with cancer within a few months of each other. This would have a huge impact on their family’s life. Harris was told she had breast cancer in stage 3, and Mac was told she had chordoma, a rare and aggressive spine cancer.

Sinise told Fox News, “At that time, we were fighting cancer.” His father’s stroke and his mother’s need for care made it impossible for him to continue his job in Hollywood. “Traveling away from the family for long periods wasn’t possible with what we were going through,...

Gary Sinise on Decision to Step Away From Hollywood After Wife, Son Were Diagnosed With Cancer
Image
Gary Sinise is opening up about his decision to step away from Hollywood to care for his wife and late son during their cancer battles.

The CSI: NY actor recently told Fox News that he paused his acting career in 2019 and moved to Nashville in 2021 to be with his son, McCanna Anthony Sinise, who died in January from a rare spinal cancer called Chordoma, and his wife, Moira Harris, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

“We were in the cancer fight during that time,” Sinise said. “My wife had been diagnosed with breast cancer. My son was diagnosed with this very rare cancer within two months of each other. My dad had just had a stroke, and my mom was alone, and I had to take care of her. I kind of had my hands full.”

Sinise said Harris has since gone into remission and is now cancer-free, but...

Forrest Gump Review: Robert Zemeckis Changed The Way Dramas Are Made With This Crowd-Pleasing Classic
Image
Director Robert Zemeckis is known for innovating the technology of filmmaking but with Forrest Gump, he combined that with a classic American tale. With Tom Hanks at his absolute peak and Robin Wright (who reunited in Here) transitioning from eighties princess to dramatic actress, the trio were all at the perfect point in their careers to make an essentially strange movie and have it gross over $600 million at the global box office and sweep the Oscars.

How Tom Hanks' 1995 True Story Movie Perfectly Depicts The 1970 Apollo Space Incident Explained By Real Astronaut
Image
A real astronaut explains how Apollo 13 perfectly depicts the aborted 1970 lunar mission. Directed by Ron Howard, the 1995 film follows the aborted lunar mission in which an explosion on board Apollo 13 cripples the spacecraft, severely reducing the oxygen supply and electrical power. As a result, NASA's flight controllers abandon plans for a Moon landing and quickly devise creative scientific and mechanical solutions to bring the three astronauts home safely. The movie stars Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, Ed Harris and Kathleen Quinlan.

In an Insider video, retired NASA astronaut Nicole Stott watched and rated the realism of how outer space is portrayed in movies, including what went wrong with the mission's lunar module and how the crew returned to Earth in Apollo 13. Stott reviewed the scenes in which, with the spacecraft's navigation systems disabled, the crew begins manually steering the Lunar Module, re-enters the Earth's atmosphere, and exits the spacecraft using parachutes.

Tom Hanks Reveals Understandable Reason Why Forrest Gump Never Got a Sequel
Image
Tom Hanks, who played the iconic eponymous character in the beloved 1994 drama Forrest Gump, has revealed why the film never got a sequel. A massive box office success, met with critical acclaim, and winning six Academy Awards, Hanks revealed that the lack of a follow-up wasnt because the studio didnt want it, but because everyone involved in creating the character didnt deem it necessary.

So, if Forrest Gump was so beloved upon release, why wasnt part two ever made? Forrest Gump 2 was likely part of the plans of every executive at Paramount Pictures after the first film became one of the most watched of the year, falling second to The Lion King, Disneys animated behemoth of 1994. Forrest Gump made $678 million at the box office from a $55 million production budget, representing Paramounts biggest blockbuster of the year.

Now, in a conversation with CinemaBlends podcast, ReelBlend, Hanks revealed that Forrest Gump 2 was...

Forrest Gump Star Robin Wright Defends Jenny From 'Voldemort' Comparisons
Image
Forrest Gump star Robin Wright is responding to the criticism that's been leveled against her character. In the 1994 film, Wright played Jenny, the love interest who ultimately ends up marrying Tom Hanks' Forrest Gump.

More recently, Wright and Hanks reunited to star in Here, the new film from Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis. To promote the movie, Wright participated in an interview with The New York Times. She was asked about the suggestion that's been made that Jenny represents anti-feminism, and Wright commented on how the character has even been compared to the big bad from the Harry Potter franchise. While Jenny was admittedly "kind of selfish," Wright sees her relationship with Forrest as the "sweetest love story" that's been told.

'Thank God We Never Bothered': Tom Hanks Is Happy 1 Oscar-Winning Film Never Had a Sequel
Image
After three decades, Forrest Gump remains one of Tom Hanks' most revered films. Given its immense success, it wouldn't have been hard to have a sequel made if Hanks was interested, but the actor is grateful he never went back down that road.

Per The New York Times, Hanks commented on how Forrest Gump is a film that stands on its own, making it unnecessary for there to ever be a sequel. As the actor explained, "It is this extraordinary amalgam that stands completely on its own and never has to be repeated. And thank God we never bothered trying to make another one. Why put a hat on a hat?

Tom Hanks is out promoting his new film, the Robert Zemeckis-directed Here, but speaking with CinemaBlends ReelBlend podcast, the actor said one role, in particular, brought him to tears. Fans of Hanks probably have countless moments when his acting has made them choke up, but for him, it was a specific moment while making Apollo 13, the 1995 film directed by Ron Howard.

Hanks recalled being on the recording stage for Apollo 13, the docudrama based on the 1970 Apollo 13 lunar mission that never made it to the moon. While speaking about how a movie's musical score can impact a moment in film, Hanks said a particular time on the stage he was brought to tears.

Gary Sinise's 10 Best Movies, Ranked
Image
Gary Sinise has quietly been at the forefront of Hollywood for the past 30 years and has had several acclaimed supporting and leading roles in some of the best movies ever made. Having found major success during the 1990s with iconic roles in Forrest Gump and Apollo 13, Sinise has also excelled in playing complex characters in lesser-known films and political figures in incredible made-for-tv movies. While Sinises movie output has slowed down in recent years as he shifted focus to television work in shows like CSI: NY and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, he boasts an impressive and varied filmography.

The very best Sinise movies include incredible Stephen King adaptations and underappreciated releases by fantastic directors like Sam Raimi. With a talent for giving subtle and effective performances, Sinise has even showcased his skills behind the camera as the director and producer for the John Steinbeck classic Of Mice and Men.

Mel Gibsons Underrated Action Film From 28 Years Ago Has One My Favorite Movie Twists Ever
Image
Released in 1996 and unlike any other movie at the time, Ransom offers a fresh take on the crime thriller genre delivering a great twist that I believe makes it one of Mel Gibson's most underrated movies. More often than not, movies such as Lethal Weapon (1987), Mad Max (1979), and Braveheart (1995) are the first contenders when discussing Mel Gibson's best film. However, Ransom brings something completely new to the table. The picture challenges the lengths parents will go to to protect their child, leaving us on the edge of our seats with some truly unexpected twists especially in the finale.

Ransom succeeds in making something unique within the crime-thriller format thanks largely to the creative input of director Ron Howard. Ransom follows multi-millionaire Tom Mullens (Gibson) whose son is kidnapped. However, in the first twist of the movie, Mullens turns the tables and announces a bounty on the heads of the kidnappers live on television.

The Original Version Of A 1990s Mel Gibson Action Movie Has My Favorite Glenn Ford Performance
Image
My favorite performance of Glenn Ford's career can be found in Ransom!, the original version of a popular Mel Gibson action movie from the 1990s. One of several Mel Gibson movies set in the action genre, 1996's Ransom explored the efforts of a married, millionaire father to rescue his son, who had been taken by kidnappers. In the dramatic thriller, Gibson's character refuses to pay the ransom demanded for his son's release, setting up a huge conflict with the kidnappers.

Decades before Ransom paired A-list Hollywood star Mel Gibson with Rene Russo in a cast that also included Gary Sinese and Delroy Lindo, Glenn Ford starred in an adaptation of the same story, which originated as a stage play. In 1956, Ford appeared in Ransom! as David Stannard, a rich businessman whose son is kidnapped from school. It's an admittedly lesser-known entry and arguably not as famous as the Gibson version,...

CSIs NY Spinoff Perfectly Flipped One Of Gary Sinises Best Roles 18 Years Later
Image
CSI: NY was led by Gary Sinise, and the show perfectly flipped one of his best roles. There have been five CSI shows, each with a signature approach to the CSI formula. CSI: New York centers on Detective Mac Taylor, played by Sinise, and his team. The New York spinoff focus on the characters' personal lives and interactions with each other was widely praised at the time, while the inner city atmosphere and muted color palette give its storylines a grittier feel, with many of the CSI: New York cases being more disturbing than those in the other spin-offs.

CSI: New York's Mac Taylor often finds himself in moral conflicts with his lab detectives and staff who, while not villainous characters, understand moral gray areas, while Taylor sees the world in a more clear-cut way. He is known to be firm, but fair, and despite his sternness, Taylor is...

Forrest Gump True Story: Every Historical Event & How Accurate They Are
Image
As Forrest Gump explores the life of Tom Hanks' character, Forrest finds himself in the midst of some of the biggest historical events of the 1960s and '70s. However, the Forrest Gump true story is anything but, and this deliberate disregard for historical accuracy is where the movie gets its charm. Forrest Gump premiered in 1994 to critical acclaim, eventually winning the Academy Award for Best Picture. Forrest Gump has polarized audiences ever since, with some viewing it as a hollow glorification of the 20th century, while others see it as a compelling tale of division and passion in American history.

Forrest Gump grossed around $678 million at the worldwide box office against a budget of $55 million, the second-highest-grossing movie of 1994, only trailing behind The Lion King's $978.8 million earnings.

Hanks' character is essentially a tour guide through the second half of the 20th century, involved in some of the most...

Tom Hanks 76% Rotten Tomatoes Oscar-Winner Is a Major Hit for Peacock
Image
One of the most iconic films of all time, with a Rotten Tomatoes score many would argue is not worth winning six Oscars, is finding major success on streaming thirty years after release. Forrest Gump, the 1994 period drama starring Tom Hanks, Gary Sinise, and Sally Field, has narrowly jumped into the top 10 most popular movies on Peacock, currently sitting in the #10 spot. The film tells the story of the United States from the 50s to the 70s through the eyes of Forrest Gump, an Alabama man with an Iq of 75 who only wanted to be reunited with his childhood sweetheart. In addition to Hanks, Sinise, and Field, Forrest Gump also stars Robin Wright, Rebecca Williams, and Sam Anderson, and currently sits at a 76% score from critics but a 95% rating from general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

The ’90s CGI Movies That Changed How We Looked at Film
Image
Film historians agree that computer-generated imagery (CGI) was first used in a motion picture as far back as Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo (1958), which utilized abstract computer animation under its opening credits. Of course that’s not immediately what comes to mind when we think of CGI (or just plain CG) today: the earliest, crude instances of the kind of CG that dominates modern filmmaking were first seen in Westworld (1973), Star Wars, Looker (1981), the groundbreaking Tron (1982), Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), and The Last Starfighter (1984).

But the first genuine leap in using CG to animate and incorporate photorealistic three-dimensional objects into live-action came in James Cameron’s The Abyss (1989) via the creation of the alien pseudopod made out of digital ocean water. The techniques developed by Industrial Light and Magic for that film blew open the doors to the true CG revolution in cinema, which began in the 1990s...
