Dennis Quaid Turned Down A Major Role In One Of Kevin Costner's Best Sports Movies
Image
Kevin Costner and Dennis Quaid are like two sides of the same coin. They have winning smiles and frequently portray the all-American, wholesome, letterman-jacket type — the kind that starred in the popular genre films of the 1990s: rom-coms and sports movies. They previously worked together in the Western flop "Wyatt Earp," but they almost starred in another film: "Tin Cup."

Released in 1996, "Tin Cup" sought to emulate the success of Costner's sensual baseball rom-com "Bull Durham" (which is generally ranked among Costner's all-time best movies). Both films revolve around a love triangle between a talented but underachieving athlete and an equally talented star, with sports serving as a way of life that helps the love interests bond and learn more about one another. In "Tin Cup" specifically, Costner plays Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy, a cynical, chaotic slob and the complete opposite of David Simms (Don Johnson), the preppy, suave, PGA...

Film Quiz Friday | Bobbing Along
Image
In this week’s film quiz, only one name stands out in Marvel’s Thunderbolts – Bob! 30 movie-related questions, coming up…

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is now so massive that you don’t need the big title characters to make a team-up movie like Thunderbolts*. You can have a Black Widow (not that one), the Winter Soldier, Ghost, Taskmaster, U.S. Agent, and a new guy called Bob, played by Lewis Pullman. So, naturally, we’ve gone with a Bob-themed quiz.

“Scraping the barrel a bit, isn’t he?” First of all, shut up. Second, we’ve got quizzes about millennial movies, Disney classics, and Mission: Impossible coming up the rest of this month and then in June… well, stay tuned, you’ll see.

Once you’ve completed this week’s film quiz, you’ll find a link to a separate post with the correct answers at the bottom of this post.

Jorma Tommila in Sisu (2022)
Sisu 2, The Thomas Crown Affair, Ella McKay all set release dates
Jorma Tommila in Sisu (2022)
Sisu 2 and Ella McKay are both with us in 2025, with a new The Thomas Crown Affair due in 2027. More here.

No matter what your preferred genre might be, there’s likely to be something in this new crop of newly announced release dates to interest you.

Firstly, Screen Gems is releasing the sequel to Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander’s violent World War II action thriller, Sisu. The first film saw an ex-commando getting rather irked when Nazis stole his gold and some thrillingly-shot revenge ensued.

Jorma Tommila returns in the lead role and the sequel is getting a 21st November theatrical release date in the US and hopefully here in the UK as well. If you haven’t caught the first film yet, click here to get a taste of the movie via its (rather violent) trailer.

If grisly thrills aren’t quite your cup of tea, then what about...

Michael B. Jordan’s new movie version of The Thomas Crown Affair will be hoping for a big score in early 2027.

Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios we hear has dated Michael B. Jordan’s reimagining of The Thomas Crown Affair for March 5, 2027. The movie will also be shown in Imax.

The news comes as Jordan is on a wild ride at the box office, with original period vampire movie Sinners getting a rare A CinemaScore and banking $77.5 million domestic. The Ryan Coogler-directed movie is bound for a second robust weekend.

12 Best Danny DeVito Movies & TV Shows, Ranked
Image
Despite standing less than five-feet tall, Danny DeVito is a giant of the entertainment industry. With literally dozens of credits to his name, DeVito has towered over the film and TV worlds through sheer force of his talent for more than half a century, with no signs of slowing down. While he has made his name and earned his fame as an actor, he's also an accomplished director and a prolific producer. Heck, he has credits for screenwriting, editing, and even soundtracks! DeVito's a cinematic "Renaissance Man," and not just because he starred in a 1994 comedy with that name.

Despite DeVito's gargantuan cinematic contributions, this multi-talented, multi-hyphenated filmmaker has never won an Academy Award, and has only been nominated once, for producing "Erin Brockovich." Yet even while watching his buddies Jack Nicholson and Michael Douglas roll in gold, DeVito stays in good spirits, because that's the guy he is. Well,...

In the Line Of Fire: Clint Eastwood’s Last Action Film Was Great
Image
Has there ever been a more iconic big-screen presence than Clint Eastwood? I’d be hard-pressed to name one, as while others like Sean Connery, Harrison Ford, and maybe Humphrey Bogart and John Wayne – if you go old school – can compare, there’s a lot more to Eastwood than anyone else. How so? Well, while most of his contemporaries were happy just to act in their films, Eastwood became the auteur of his work, directing many of his post-The Outlaw Josey Wales vehicles. When he opted to semi-retire from screen acting, he was able to carry on as a director, and in fact, despite being well into his nineties, he’s still directing movies, with his recent Juror No 2 being a little gem.

However, when In the Line of Fire was made in 1993, Eastwood was at something of a crossroads in his career. For the thirty years prior, starting...

The star appeared in a video segment at Amazon MGM Studios’ presentation Wednesday, where he told the crowd that he wished he could attend the Las Vegas event but was busy working on the film in London. Jordan directs and stars opposite Taylor Russell in the heist feature.

Amazon MGM exec Kevin Wilson, who was on the stage, shared that the movie “promises to surprise audiences with a few modern twists.”

The Thomas Crown Affair originated with director Norman Jewison’s 1968 film starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway in the story of an insurance investigator working to track down the perpetrator of a bank heist. It landed two Oscar nominations.

John Travolta’s 30-Year-Old Gangster Film Is One of the Funniest Comedies of the 1990s
Image
Just a year after delivering a memorable performance as Vincent Vega in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, John Travolta came back as Miami Mobster in one of the decade's most celebrated comedies. In this 1995 gangster film, Travolta plays the character of Chili Palmer, a loan shark who had "an idea for a movie" and is fascinated with Hollywood filmmaking. He thinks that 'Hollywood ain't so different from the mob. Just a different kind of hustle.' And that's exactly what Barry Sonnenfeld's Get Shorty delivers–a gangster drama that's not about shootouts and heists but about the hilarious clash between the underworld and Hollywood.

Adapted from Elmore Leonard's novel and written by Scott Frank for the screen, Get Shorty is one of the comedies that knew exactly where to be witty, serious, and genuinely funny. Travolta, who was fresh from Pulp Fiction success, brings the cool, fashionable and...

Taylor Russell Joins Michael B. Jordan in 'The Thomas Crown Affair' Remake
Image
Hollywood star Michael B. Jordan is currently planning a modern remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, which is based on the 1968 and 1999 heist films of the same name. After a thorough casting process, Jordan seems to have found his female counterpart for the film. Taylor Russell, who was previously featured in Waves, both Escape Room movies, and Bones and All, has joined the project.

Deadline reports that Russell was the actor selected by Jordan to play opposite him in the heist film. It wasn't an easy casting process, as several other talented performers auditioned. Nevertheless, after a screen test with Jordan himself, she was selected as the next woman in charge of investigating the rich dude who likes to steal (the character was played by Faye Dunaway in 1968 and Rene Russo in 1999).

Jordan is heavily involved in the film as a producer via his Outlier Society banner alongside Elizabeth Raposo.

Taylor Russell To Co-Star Opposite Michael B. Jordan In Amazon MGM Studios’ ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ Reimagining
Image
Exclusive: Following a lengthy audition process, Michael B. Jordan looks to have zeroed in on the leading lady for his new The Thomas Crown Affair movie. Sources tell Deadline that Taylor Russell has landed the coveted role in the reimagining opposite Jordan, who is set to star and direct.

Jordan will also produce via his production banner Outlier Society alongside Elizabeth Raposo. The film will be released exclusively in theaters.

When Jordan set this as his next film last fall, the obvious next question was who would Jordan would steam up the screen with. The previous two Thomas Crown Affair films turned Faye Dunaway and Rene Russo into instant A-listers, so the role quickly became one of the more sought-after in town. On top of that, with Mission: Impossible films winding down and James Bond way off, Jordan has seen this as a potential replacement given the character’s similarities to 007. With that in mind,...

Pierce Brosnan Excited To Watch Michael B. Jordan Lead 'The Thomas Crown Affair' Remake
Image
As his former character, James Bond, is still in the process of being redesigned and recast for modern audiences, Pierce Brosnan continues to delight audiences with new and exciting roles. His latest is the TV series MobLand, and although Bond is still his most important character, Brosnan also looks back on others that helped shoot him to stardom during his prime in the 1990s. One of these was playing Thomas Crown in The Thomas Crown Affair, the 1999 romantic heist movie that Amazon Studios is now in the process of remaking with Michael B. Jordanas the lead.

Brosnan has now addressed the remake while speaking to GQ about MobLand, in which he co-stars with Tom Hardy and Helen Mirren. During the interview, Brosnan was asked about the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair and whether he approves of Jordan's casting as the roguish billionaire who likes to steal valuable artwork. The...

Why Rene Russo Disappeared From Hollywood
Image
When a Hollywood actor is big and making lots of movies, it kind of feels like they'll stick around forever. There are plenty who do, but so often a familiar face will enjoy a hot streak before vanishing from the limelight. Back in the '90s we had a number of such actors. Alicia Silverstone, Meg Ryan, and Bridget Fonda all hit their peak during the decade and became household names thanks to their hits. And then they were gone, either suffering from a string of poor choices (Silverstone), taking a break from acting (Ryan), or retiring altogether (Fonda). Another Hollywood star who enjoyed her heyday in the '90s before vacating our multiplexes was Rene Russo. But why exactly did she disappear from Hollywood?

Russo was one of several models who crossed over into acting during the '90s. Some made a big splash in their breakthrough roles, like...

Pierce Brosnan Had To Follow A Strange Rule Because Of His James Bond Movies
Image
Pierce Brosnan is a preposterously handsome man, and like most preposterously handsome men, he looks positively spectacular in just about any piece of clothing you can throw on him. A tuxedo is like a second layer of skin for Brosnan. He can rock a suede blazer with more verve than any other man on the planet. He could probably set hearts a-flutter in a clown suit.

Brosnan has been a men's fashion plate since "Remington Steele" turned him into a global superstar 43 years ago. He was the first choice to succeed Roger Moore as James Bond after "A View to a Kill," and only lost out on the role because NBC exercised its option on a fifth season of "Remington Steele" that no one wanted. Obviously, he eventually landed the role he was seemingly born to play, but while Brosnan was only ever perfect as Bond, the films around him tended to let him down.

The MCU has been capturing the imagination of moviegoers and converting many of them to superhero nerds for almost two decades now, but it's also been responsible for drastically altering the career trajectories of many of its prominent stars. Among those most affected was Chris Hemsworth. The Aussie heartthrob may be a household name now, but before he first wielded Thor's mighty hammer, he wasn't well-known outside Australian soaps.

Mel Gibson's Rogert Ebert-Praised 'Ransom' Streaming for Free on Tubi
Image
Mel Gibson’s career has been a rollercoaster ride of successes and failures punctuated by some unpopular opinions and controversial moments. However, back in 1996 Gibson was still banging out some of his best work. This includes the action thriller Ransom, which has scored a huge resurgence on Tubi since arriving on the free streaming platform recently.

The film stars Gibson as Tom Mullen, a wealthy airline owner whose life is upended when his son, Sean, is kidnapped. Director Ron Howard delivers a blistering fast-paced race against time, which comes with several twist endings and strong performances from Gibson, Rene Russo, and Gary Sinise. Almost thirty years on, the film’s arrival on Tubi has underscored the constant demand for action movies, both old and new, on streaming platforms, and how very few pass by without a stop on a Top 10 chart somewhere.

Ransom was a box office hit in 1996, landing...

Where’s Ransom? The Ron Howard-Mel Gibson thriller is another hard-to-find movie
Image
Yesterday, I wrote a story about how one of my favourite Thanksgiving movies, Dutch, seems to be nearly impossible to find nowadays, with the out-of-print DVD and Blu-ray pretty pricey and the movie not streaming at all on any service (although some readers noted it used to be on HBO Max). I’ve written at length about movies that are hard to find, but just how popular some of the missing titles are shocks me. It’s gotten to the point where niche titles, or at least ones with some kind of cult behind them, are often easier to find than formerly popular ones. Consider the fact that just today, Michael Mann’s The Keep, which never even got a DVD release, has just been announced for 4K Blu-ray. I was pondering this very thing when I received a text from a friend of the site, Paul Shirey, who used...

'Thanos Has to Fit': Josh Brolin Addresses Possible Return as Avengers Supervillain in Upcoming Sequel
Image
Despite his demise in Avengers: Endgame, Thanos could return and wreak havoc on the Multiverse again if the opportunity arises. Josh Brolin, who portrayed the terrifying supervillain, suggests he could portray Thanos in Avengers: Secret Wars, though the character "has to fit" the story being told.

Speaking with Collider at New York Comic Con, Brolin addressed the possibility of Thanos appearing in Secret Wars, the anticipated Phase Six closer and Multiverse-collapsing event. However, Brolin thinks the right narrative needs to be introduced for a Thanos comeback to make sense. "Im not kidding Theres a thing with playing Thanos. Its like, Oh, theyre gonna bring Thanos back. Its like Sicario ; it has to be right. Its like Ryan Reynolds and I talking about Taylor Swift and we should be talking about Deadpool 4. 30 Best Thriller Movies Ever Made, Ranked
Hitchcock in Alone for Christmas (2013)
There is nothing quite like the exciting expectation of a well-made thriller, whether we’re in a dark theater or the comfort of our own homes. This type of fiction is great at keeping people on the edge of their seats, with their hearts racing and minds desperately trying to figure out what’s going on. These must-see thrillers aren’t just chase scenes and shadowy figures; they’ve grown into complex psychological puzzles that play with our darkest fears and make us think about what we think we know.

The best thriller movies have always pushed the limits of storytelling, from Hitchcock’s superb use of anxiety to current psychological warfare on screen. I don’t know how much movies should entertain, said David Fincher, a director. It always interests me when movies make you feel bad. What makes great movies different from just fun is that they leave...

10 Years Ago, Jake Gyllenhaal Starred In The Perfect Crime Thriller That Was Robbed At The Oscars
Image
Dan Gilroy's "Nightcrawler" is designed to make you feel ill at ease. When small-time thief Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) is first introduced, the discomfort evoked stems from the desperation late-stage capitalism embeds into our souls and how it pushes us towards unsavory avenues. However, once Bloom pawns a stolen bicycle for a camcorder, and we are forced to dissect violent, extreme crime scenes with him, the true, eerie heart of "Nightcrawler" is revealed. Bloom isn't just pushed into taking such ethically void measures to ensure his survival: he actively hungers for these excesses, as seen in his wide-eyed, unblinking gaze, which Gyllenhaal invests with an unsettling intensity that grants "Nightcrawler" its discomfiting tint. It is an experience that comes alive solely because of him, and Gyllenhaal carries this burden by channeling a haunting, career-defining performance that is both subtle and felt deeply in our bones.

Gyllenhaal is no one-hit...

Tim Allen hasn’t been making a ton of movies or TV shows lately, but he has been making a lot of headlines for being a giant asshole. There were the reports that Allen previously threw his Home Improvement co-star Patricia Richardson under the bus during contract negotiations with ABC, allegations that he exposed himself to “Tool Girl” Pamela Anderson in 1991 and claims that he was “so fucking rude” while working with Casey Wilson, which seems especially egregious because he was literally dressed like Santa Claus at the time.

So it’s not entirely shocking that a new anecdote about Allen being a dick to his collaborators just dropped.

As reported by Slash Film, director Barry Sonnenfeld’s newest book, Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time: True Stories from a Career in Hollywood, describes the process of making the 2002 film Big Trouble. The largely forgotten crime comedy starred Allen, as...

Tim Allen Was Incredibly Disrespectful To Rene Russo On The Set Of Big Trouble
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Tim Allen is a complicated figure for a lot of folks of a certain age. Tim "The Toolman" Taylor on "Home Improvement" turned him into a beloved TV dad, voicing Buzz Lightyear in "Toy Story" made him synonymous with the childhoods of a generation, and perhaps most importantly, he's Santa Claus. He's also an actor who has been very open about his conservative political beliefs, going so far as to star in the right-wing sitcom "Last Man Standing" for nine seasons. This makes him a polarizing presence in the overwhelmingly left-leaning Hollywood, but Allen's controversies are far worse than his views on the American government.

In Pamela Anderson's memoir "Love, Pamela," she noted that Allen flashed her on the set of "Home Improvement" when she was only 23 and claimed, "He said it was only fair because he had seen me naked.

Working With John Travolta On Get Shorty Filled Gene Hackman With Rage
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

In Barry Sonnenfeld's 1995 showbiz comedy "Get Shorty," John Travolta plays Chili Palmer, a loan shark from Miami who possesses more cool than anyone currently living. He's also a deep-cut movie buff, and bought a leather jacket specifically because it looked exactly like the one Al Pacino wore in "Serpico." Chili is sent to Los Angeles to shake up a low-budget movie producer named Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman) who owes a great deal of cash. Harry Zimm most often produces movies with grave-robbing ghouls and slime creatures, frequently starring his preferred scream queen Karen Flores (Rene Russo). Chili, seeing an opportunity, doesn't shake down Harry for the money, but decides to go into business with him producing movies. Harry, you see, has found a very, very good, Oscar-quality prestige script that will pull him out of the B-movie ghetto.

Gary Sinise's 10 Best Movies, Ranked
Image
Gary Sinise has quietly been at the forefront of Hollywood for the past 30 years and has had several acclaimed supporting and leading roles in some of the best movies ever made. Having found major success during the 1990s with iconic roles in Forrest Gump and Apollo 13, Sinise has also excelled in playing complex characters in lesser-known films and political figures in incredible made-for-tv movies. While Sinises movie output has slowed down in recent years as he shifted focus to television work in shows like CSI: NY and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, he boasts an impressive and varied filmography.

The very best Sinise movies include incredible Stephen King adaptations and underappreciated releases by fantastic directors like Sam Raimi. With a talent for giving subtle and effective performances, Sinise has even showcased his skills behind the camera as the director and producer for the John Steinbeck classic Of Mice and Men.

Mel Gibson unsure if he'll direct The Passion of the Christ sequel before Lethal Weapon 5
Mel Gibson isn't sure whether he will direct 'The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection' before 'Lethal Weapon 5'.The 68-year-old star is due to helm the follow-up to the 2004 historical drama as well as the next instalment into the action franchise but has now admitted the production schedules for both movies are up in the air. When ComicBook.com asked the 'Braveheart' actor which film he'd tackle first, he said: "I don't know, and that's the funny thing."I mean, there's various obstacles to getting any film up on its feet, and not just budgetary, but there's like, there's 1,000,001 reasons why something goes and why it doesn't. "So it's really kind of a c***shoot at this point what goes first and which came first, whether it's the chicken or the egg."In 2021, Gibson revealed he would be directing a sequel to 1998's 'Lethal Weapon 4...

The Original Version Of A 1990s Mel Gibson Action Movie Has My Favorite Glenn Ford Performance
Image
My favorite performance of Glenn Ford's career can be found in Ransom!, the original version of a popular Mel Gibson action movie from the 1990s. One of several Mel Gibson movies set in the action genre, 1996's Ransom explored the efforts of a married, millionaire father to rescue his son, who had been taken by kidnappers. In the dramatic thriller, Gibson's character refuses to pay the ransom demanded for his son's release, setting up a huge conflict with the kidnappers.

Decades before Ransom paired A-list Hollywood star Mel Gibson with Rene Russo in a cast that also included Gary Sinese and Delroy Lindo, Glenn Ford starred in an adaptation of the same story, which originated as a stage play. In 1956, Ford appeared in Ransom! as David Stannard, a rich businessman whose son is kidnapped from school. It's an admittedly lesser-known entry and arguably not as famous as the Gibson version,...

I'm Worried About Creed 4 After New Michael B. Jordan Movie Remake Update
Image
Michael B. Jordan has been confirmed as the director and star of the newly-announced remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, which could put Creed IV on hold for a few years and that worries me. Jordan made his directorial debut with Creed III, which saw Donnie facing his troubled past when an old friend was released from prison and came after his championship title. After Creed III was widely acclaimed by critics and became a hit at the box office upon its release in 2023, the studio wasted no time putting a fourth film into active development, with Jordan returning to direct.

But now, Jordan has signed on to direct a totally unrelated movie first. Before he moves on to Creed IV, Jordan is directing The Thomas Crown Affair remake for Amazon MGM Studios. Jordan is also set to star in the film and produce, alongside Elizabeth Raposo, through his production label,...

Michael B. Jordan Set To Direct And Star In The Thomas Crown Affair Remake
Image
On screen, we’ve already seen Michael B. Jordan conduct an art heist of sorts – that brilliantly memorable museum scene in Black Panther, in which his Killmonger liberates artefacts shamelessly nabbed by the British during colonial rule. Now, get ready for a different kind of Jordan-pilfers-precious-art outing – the man is getting ready to step into the shoes of Steve McQueen and Pierce Brosnan, as the latest incarnation of super-smooth criminal mastermind Thomas Crown. A new take on The Thomas Crown Affair is officially on the way – with Jordan not only set to take the title role (a notion that's been hanging around in Hollywood since 2016), but also to direct.

As reported by Deadline, Jordan is lining up his second feature as director, following Creed III – and the new Thomas Crown looks set to be it. He’ll be producing via his Outline Society production banner for Amazon MGM Studios – with...

Nicole Kidman played the role of a damsel in distress in Joel Schumacher’s first of the two least-favorite Batman movies, Batman Forever. Before Kidman was chosen, the producers wanted Rene Russo to star opposite her One Good Cop co-star Michael Keaton. However, Keaton dropped out of the project and Val Kilmer replaced him, making Russo too old to be paired with Kilmer.

Kevin Feige Tells Us About Ryan Reynolds’ ‘One-Room Christmas’ Deadpool Movie Pitch
Image
While Ryan Reynolds has gone on the record as far back as 2021 to state that his dream vision for a third Deadpool movie always involved a road trip story with Wade and Logan, the path to making Deadpool & Wolverine a reality was anything but a smooth ride. In fact, Reynolds spent a good deal of time pitching Marvel Studios on a number of alternate, divergent ideas for Deadpool 3… including a low-budget concept sans any big set pieces. And when we spoke to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige last week, the MCU impresario confirmed that a “Sundance” version was briefly developed. He even shed some light on Reynolds’ apparently Yuletide vision.

“Ryan is an idea machine who every day could pitch a new Deadpool movie, and did for a while as we were working on this,” Feige told us. “I don’t know exactly which ones he’s revealed and talked about,...
