We’ve all been there and ugly-cried over Sirius Black’s death in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, whether while reading the book or while watching the film. Turns out, Gary Oldman, who played the role in the films, was equally heartbroken over his character’s demise within a short span of time.
In a behind-the-scenes moment, Gary Oldman found out he was getting the literary axe, and let’s just say, he did not take it like a Gryffindor. His good friend, David Thewlis, who played Remus Lupin in the films recalled how Oldman expressed his honest rage towards J.K. Rowling after she did our dogfather dirty.

Exclusive: Goodfellas is getting behind Kevin Smith’s mission to theatrically re-release his controversial 1999 religious satire Dogma, starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as fallen angels, after a tumultuous launch first time round.
The maverick Paris-based sales company has acquired international rights to the remastered 4K edition of the film, which is screening in the Cannes Film Festival’s Cannes Classics sidebar this year.
The Cannes splash follows Smith’s announcement last October that he had gotten the rights back to the movie which had been out of his hands since the initial release. This acquisition was made by Triple Media Film in partnership with View Askew Productions.
Under the care of Triple Media Film, the film is fully remastered in 4K, and was supervised by Oscar-nominated director of photography Robert Yeoman, who was the cinematographer on Dogma, ahead of going to work on multiple films with Wes Anderson including The Grand Budapest Hotel.

It's not an exaggeration to say that there are so many wizarding families found within the narrative of "Harry Potter" — though some are obviously more prominent than the others. Thanks to the specific focus on Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) and his friends, we know a lot about the Weasleys, the Malfoys (because Tom Felton's Draco Malfoy is Harry's nemesis at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry), and the Blacks, among others. But what about the Dumbledores?
We first meet Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts, during Harry's first year at the wizarding school; in the massively popular film franchise, the legendary British actor Richard Harris played the role in the first two movies ("Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets") before he passed away in 2002. After that, Michael Gambon took over as Dumbledore and completed the franchise as the powerful wizard,...

Praise be to Buddy Christ, because Kevin Smith’s Dogma is going to France. Kevin Smith’s acclaimed religious satire will be playing at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival as an official selection in the Cannes Classics situation, screening May 22nd at the Palais des Festivals.
Dogma screened out of competition at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival, before its theatrical release later that year. Now, its arrival at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival comes during the movie’s ongoing Resurrection Tour, which began on Easter Sunday in Los Angeles and sold out its 20-city tour in the first 24 hours, with additional shows being added in every market.
“Sold out screenings, standing ovations, and now Cannes? This is beyond divine,” Kevin Smith said in a statement. “To see Dogma honored as a Cannes Classic is a true blessing… We made this movie with humor, heresy and a hell of a lot of heart. And somehow,...

J.K. Rowling has dropped a bombshell that has got everyone talking: she is not pushing to fire Paapa Essiedu, the new Severus Snape in HBO’s Harry Potter series. Even though he has openly supported trans rights, a stance that clashes with her own views, Rowling has no plans of taking away someone’s “job.”
Rowling took to X, saying she does not have that kind of “power” to play with the series’ cast and made it clear she wouldn’t sack Essiedu even if she could. This comes amid a whirlwind of controversy over Essiedu’s casting, Rowling’s history with trans issues, and the future of the Harry Potter franchise.

One former Harry Potter actor shares advice for the person who will take over their role in the TV series. The Harry Potter movies began in 2001, starting with the release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The series came to become a multi-billion dollar entity, becoming one of the most successful film series of all time. In the years following the movies' completion, HBO announced the development of a Harry Potter TV series. The show will feature an entirely new cast, allowing for fresh portrayals of its characters.
Per People, Harry Potter alum Bonnie Wright offers advice to whoever will play the next Ginny. Wright sees the show's creation as a great chance for exciting reinterpretations of the characters that give them "new life." As Donald Trump wants to introduce tariffs for films and TV shows made outside America, there’s a chance emerging to reset parts of the entertainment industry.
There’s a line in 1988’s Die Hard, where the villainous Hans Gruber is – spoiler light! – looking to smoke out John McClane. As part of that, into the frame comes the coked-up (in two senses) character of Ellis. It’s a beautifully played moment in a much-loved movie, and Alan Rickman’s Gruber ultimately declares to McClane that “sooner or later, I might get to someone you do care about.”
Following the second coming of US President Donald Trump has been a bit like that for many. He appears to be throwing darts at an assortment of targets, in an attempt to provoke a reaction. If he’s not irked you yet, rest assured he’s going to keep trying, and is likely...

Accio, all Potterheads! Today isn’t just another trip down memory lane—it’s International Harry Potter Day, the magical anniversary of the day our beloved Chosen One defeated You-Know-Who in that unforgettable final duel at Hogwarts. A couple of days ago, I found myself summoning (no shame) my well-worn copy of The Prisoner of Azkaban—yes, again—and diving into its pages for the 1000th time.
There’s just something about Sirius, time-turners, and Hippogriffs that feels like home. And since today is Harry Potter Day, I decided to curl up with my dog, whom I’ve named Padfoot, and revisit the film.
But let me just say… Merlin’s beard, Chris Columbus did mischief-manage one of the most heart-tugging scenes right out of the movies.

Andrew Karpen, founder and CEO of Bleecker Street, has died after an extended battle with glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer. He was 59.
Karpen was a mainstay of the independent film industry for much of the 21st century, serving as co-ceo of Focus Features for more than a decade before leaving to found Bleecker Street, which took its name from the New York street where Focus’ headquarters was located, in 2014.
Bleecker Street made its first film acquisition at TIFF 2014 with “Pawn Sacrifice,” which starred Tobey Maguire as chess legend Bobby Fischer. In the decade since, Bleecker Street’s filmography has included movies like “Captain Fantastic” starring Viggo Mortensen and “Trumbo” starring Bryan Cranston, both of whom received Oscar nominations for their performances.
Other films include the Steven Soderbergh heist film “Logan Lucky” and the war drama “Eye in the Sky” starring Helen Mirren as well as Alan Rickman in his last live action role.

When Kevin Smith shot "Clerks" for $27,575, he'd received a small amount of film school training but was a babe in the woods when it came to the crucial aspect of directing actors. It shows in the movie, which is so stiffly performed that I've never been able to connect to it. The screenplay is undeniably hilarious and wise in the ways of the workaday convenience store world, but Smith's actors seem so oddly strangled. It's not the kind of acting you get in a poorly rehearsed community theater production where you can see the actors struggling to remember their lines; it's more like you're watching people who've been unnaturally directed. Their performances are really those of their director, not their own.
The off performances in "Clerks" and "Mallrats" began to make sense years later when I heard that Smith had a penchant for committing the cardinal sin of directing. Be it theater,...

Years in the making, HBO’s planned Harry Potter series adaptation is closer than ever to coming to the small screen.
First revealed as a possibility in early 2021, the upcoming television show is expected to last for several years, with each season adapting one of the six Harry Potter novels written by J.K. Rowling.
“The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail, much-loved characters, and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over twenty-five years,” Warner Bros. Discovery said in a press release in 2023. “Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic, and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”
In a statement released at the time, Rowling seemed pleased with the concept.

Jason Isaacs isn't resentful of the next person to play Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter. In fact, if anything, he's looking forward to seeing who will replace him as the evil wizard.
Isaacs got to talking about the HBO reboot in an episode of Awards Chatter. He said, via Entertainment Weekly, "I'll milk this, because this time next year, there's gonna be another Lucius Malfoy, and he's gonna be fantastic, and I'll be long forgotten. So I am savoring every round of applause I get."
I'll be long forgotten.
He made it clear that his remark was "not me fishing for compliments or more applause," but rather just whole-hearted acceptance of the fact that there would be another Malfoy soon. "I'm just saying, they are making the TV series, and it will be brilliant," he said. "And I will be - just like I'm now last season's White Lotus actor...

Like London buses, it seems as if two castings have come at once for Paapa Essiedu after months of fans waiting for news. Ten days on from the exciting, albeit expected, confirmation that the actor would be starring as Professor Snape in the new HBO adaptation of the Harry Potter TV series, Essidou is back in the headlines for a new casting announcement, this time teaming up with Bodyguard star Keeley Hawes to star in a brand-new drama for Channel 4, Falling. Speaking of his casting, as cited via Variety, Essidou said, "Falling is a story that has Jack Thorne’s singular talent of mining the sublime out of the ordinary running all the way through. I can’t wait to work with Keeley, Peter and the rest of the team to bring this world to life."

When it rains, it pours -- especially in terms of terrible movies. Like bleach, they burn into your retinas and seep all the way to the brain, refusing to let anyone forget about what they just watched. It's not all doom and gloom, though. Even in the darkest days, there's a shining light, a twinkle of redemption, an actor who makes the whole ordeal that much more bearable.
Valiantly, saviors like Raul Julia in "Street Fighter" and Uma Thurman in "Batman & Robin" gallop onto the screen to defend the honor of cinema from the misdeeds committed by their respective movies. They fight for the audience, helping to turn mayhem into magic (if only for the times they're on screen) and bring joy to the joyless.
So, let us salute the brave soldiers who never gave up when others clearly did. Let us acknowledge the actors who saved terrible movies.

When it comes to Jeopardy!, fans have a keen ear and eye on what happens during the game show. And some fans have noticed that host Ken Jennings keeps subtly repeating a famous quote from Die Hard. “‘Double Jeopardy, where the scores can really change!’ Ken’s said this a couple of times. HBO just filled up the faculty at Hogwarts, and Black Mirror actor Paapa Essiedu is playing Professor Snape. Essiedu’s casting in the Harry Potter series has long been in the rumors, and it wasn’t getting the reception that one would hope. As HBO confirms the race-swapped casting from the books, there are a lot of things that can just go wrong by making Snape a black man.
For starters, making a black guy (Snape) harass a white kid (Harry Potter) would be wrong on so many levels. I can come up with at least a few situations in the story where HBO failed to think through the casting of a black Snape.
However, I believe that the series has nailed the rest of the casting, especially Nick Frost in the role of Hagrid and Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall. I have concerns regarding John Lithgow’s long-term commitment to the role,...

HBO’s “Harry Potter” television adaptation is slowly coming together, but we’re still a ways out from actually getting it on our screens. That said, we are learning more and more as the months go on.
The series was first announced back in 2023, when HBO first launched the new name for its streaming service, Max. It has yet to be officially confirmed that each season will span one novel, similar to Disney+’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series, but each book does take place over a single school year, as did the movies.
Here’s everything we know about the series thus far.
When does the series come out?
An official release date has not been set, as the series hasn’t even started filming yet. That’ll happen this Summer. But, according to reports, the series is currently looking at a release some time in 2027.
Where will it film?...

Max’s Harry Potter TV series has officially cast four series regulars and two recurring roles, including four actors Deadline previously revealed: John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
The newly announced cast includes Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch. Whitehouse is the only actor cast thus far to have appeared in any of the original films. He played Sir Cadogan in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
The franchise follows the life of a young wizard, the titular Harry Potter, whose parents died under mysterious circumstances when he was very young. He was forced to live a life of misery and servitude to his aunt and uncle and their awful son before he was freed from his gilded cage when Hagrid extended an invitation that changed his life forever.

In their invaluable book "Writing Movies for Fun and Profit," authors Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant (former members of "The State" and writers of hit films like "Night at the Museum" and "Herbie: Fully Loaded") had a few pieces of immutable advice for aspiring screenwriters hoping to make a living in Hollywood. Importantly, they advised that writers should never hang all your dreams on a single screenplay, and they should be able to toss aside a script if it gets turned down. They also advised that writers say, "Yes, I can do that," to every single studio note, no matter how ridiculous. They wanted to ensure that an ambitious should churn out as much work as possible, and worry more about "entertainment" than "art."

Cillian Murphy’s name has been floating around for a while as a potential casting choice in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series. Although the rumors are yet to gain any substantial ground, a new interview with Warner Bros. TV boss Channing Dungey has added fuel to them.
As a result, the internet has been going crazy with speculations about which character will be best suited for an actor of his magnitude. While some lament the missed opportunity of seeing him as Snape, others seem hopeful about Murphy portraying a pivotal role in the series.

Throughout his career, Jason Isaacs had many impressive roles, including roles in franchises like Star Wars and Star Trek, and even becoming Cary Grant in Archie. However, one of his most popular roles was in Harry Potter, and now the hit HBO series The White Lotus.
The role of Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter and The White Lotus' Timothy Ratliff were vastly different, and not just because of the magical element from the fantasy series, but also because of the accents. Lucius was from the UK, while Tim was a successful businessman from North Carolina. During a new appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Isaacs explained how he managed his spot-on Southern accent, and how he shocked Harry Potter director Chris Columbus with his initial take on Lucius.
"The internet was concerned with two things," Isaacs explained about his The White Lotus role. "My penis and my accent.

At the end of the day, actors are just people. Conveniently, that’s also the time of day when everybody is least likely to notice a memento or two go missing, because people like keepsakes. Can you really blame some of them for sneaking off with an incredibly cool prop or two? Don’t act like you wouldn’t.

Emboldened by the light-fingered Alan Rickman, who stole a bunch of gold coins from the wizard bank (for charity!), the vessel of Lucius Malfoy decided to swipe a copy of the paper of record in the wizarding world, The Daily Prophet, from the set of a Harry Potter film for a friend who wanted one. Unfortunately, he was caught almost immediately by a security guard at the end of the day, who told him, “Night, Jason. Give us the Daily Prophet back.

Plot: U.S. President Danielle Sutton must defend her family, fellow leaders and the world when the G20 summit in Cape Town, South Africa is taken over by terrorists
Review: I grew up in the era of Arnold, Stallone, Jcvd, Bruce Willis, and, yes, Steven Seagal. Action movies of the 1980s and 1990s had a different flavor than today, but seeing an actor play the President of the United States and kicking terrorists or alien asses was always a fun and exploitative experience. It is impossible to avoid that surge of patriotism as Harrison Ford said, “Get off my plane,” or Bill Pullman declared, “Today we celebrate our Independence Day.” In recent years, Gerard Butler and Channing Tatum have played agents protecting the President and garnering their own action-hero status. Still, it will never replace Potus wielding a gun or beating the hell out of a bad guy. The Prime...

Creating the magical world of "Harry Potter" was a massive undertaking when the film franchise kicked off in 2001 with the very first movie, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (or, if you don't live in the United States, "Philosopher's Stone"). Warner Bros. and the creative team behind the movies were tasked with bringing Harry's journey at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to life — and his entire discovery of the magical world in general — and overall, they did a pretty great job! With young actors Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson in the lead roles as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, all of whom were flanked by incredible British actors like the late Alan Rickman and Dame Maggie Smith, and picked up cameras in the United Kingdom to create these magical movies.

Harry Potter is still a beloved IP, despite the ongoing controversy with the author and the fact that the final film was released a decade and a half ago. The eight films had a perfect cast made up of newcomers for the child actors and highly accomplished stars for the older characters, a formula that is going to be hard to replicate.

It seems odd to refer to 1988's "Willow" as "the Willow movie," but that's because every nostalgic intellectual property is ripe for refreshing in the modern franchise era, and "Willow" finally got a sequel streaming series on Disney+, also called "Willow." Over 30 years passed between the two, and that's a lot of time for actors to change or even pass away. Warwick Davis' passion for his biggest lead role without special effects makeup never waned, and his enthusiasm is palpable still as he struggles to get the series reclaimed from the Disney vault into which it quickly vanished (and we know the annoying reason why).
The original movie, written by George Lucas and directed by Ron Howard, was an attempt to do for fantasy what "Star Wars" had done for science fiction, and it even featured groundbreaking special effects, like the first use of digital morphing. It was a box office disappointment in its day,...

"Two tickets to New Jersey, please." The two fallen angels are back! Kevin Smith has revealed a brand new trailer for the 25th Anniversary of Dogma, his celebrated religious comedy classic that first opened in 1999. I remember hearing about this movie growing up because it was so edgy and provocative, and the religious world didn't want anyone to watch it. Dogma is being re-released in theaters this June in the middle of the summer with a new 4K restoration, along with a nationwide screening tour featuring Kevin Smith + special guests (starting April 20 in LA). Two fallen angels who were ejected from paradise find themselves banned in Wisconsin. They are now headed for New Jersey where they find a loophole that can get them back into heaven. The only catch is that it will destroy humanity. A group bands together to stop them. The ensemble cast features Ben Affleck & Matt Damon as Bartleby & Loki,...

Challenges Facing HBO’s Harry Potter!(Photo Credit –Instagram)
HBO’s Harry Potter remake is brewing in the cauldron, and let’s just say this potion won’t be all Felix Felicis. The series, still a couple of years away, already has fans split like a bad Sorting Hat decision. From casting debates louder than a Howler to the inevitable showdown with the beloved films, this reboot is stepping into a minefield of nostalgia, high expectations, and, let’s be honest, some serious skepticism.
Can it pull off a spellbinding reinvention, or will it fizzle out like a dud wand at Ollivanders? If HBO wants to avoid a Mischief Managed moment before it even starts, it needs to tackle some harsh realities head-on, because pretending they don’t exist? That’s a one-way ticket to Azkaban.

For the past few years, it’s been near impossible to watch Kevin Smith’s 1999 religious comedy Dogma because Harvey and Bob Weinstein personally owned the rights, and they’ve faced more pressing matters in recent years than finding a new home for it. But The Hollywood Reporter reports that Smith has finally regained the rights to his film, and it’s returning to theaters on June 5. Prior to that, Smith will appear at special Dogma screenings all across the country, kicking off April 20 at the Grove in Los Angeles.

A few months ago, writer/director Kevin Smith confirmed that his 1999 film Dogma, which he had said was being “held hostage” by the infamous Harvey Weinstein for years, has been “bought away” from that guy by a company that was interested in having Smith take it on tour in theatres around the country. A "Cape Fear"-esque action crime thriller hit theaters in the autumn of 1991. This film, titled "Ricochet," started as a spec script that accidentally mirrored the plot of 1962's "Cape Fear" and was initially intended as a "Dirty Harry" installment featuring Clint Eastwood. After Eastwood rejected the script for being too grim, the script changed hands until "Die Hard" screenwriter Stephen de Souza rewrote chunks of it while still retaining the original premise.
The premise in question is a violent revenge plot, where a righteous attorney is stalked by a psychopath who wants an eye or eye, ready to go to extremes to enact his nefarious plan. A month after "Ricochet" premiered, Martin Scorsese's "Cape Fear" — an official remake of the 1962 version — handled this premise with chilling brilliance, etching a visceral picture of hatred and disgust that also boasts nuance. A month after "Ricochet" premiered, Martin Scorsese's "Cape Fear" — an official remake of the 1962 version — handled this premise with chilling brilliance, etching a visceral picture of hatred and disgust that also boasts nuance. Did Pierce Brosnan want to play a role in Harry Potter? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Well, it turns out Mr. 007 himself would’ve totally said “Accio role!” if offered a chance to join the wizarding world. Brosnan revealed he would’ve happily jumped aboard the Hogwarts Express to play one very iconic character, and honestly, we can kinda see it.
With that suave charm and magical presence, he’d have nailed it. While Daniel Radcliffe, Alan Rickman, and others are forever linked to their Og roles, the upcoming TV reboot is mixing things up with fresh faces. But knowing Brosnan was totally down for some wand-waving action? That’s pure wizard gold. Now we can’t stop imagining him sweeping through Hogwarts with his fancy robes and that signature Brosnan smirk.

Ever since the Golden Age of Hollywood explored film Noir and mystery thrillers, a variety of directors and writers have made a point of giving the audience unexpected twist endings to make films that much better. From cerebral science fiction movies to psychological thrillers, the best twists make for an entirely new experience upon second viewing. While some twists can be uninspired or predictable, others are simply perfect.
Twists can come in all forms, from whodunit mysteries finally revealing the culprit to the reveal of hidden allegiances and betrayals. When directors manage to pull off a great twist, it often leads to some of the most iconic movies there are, sometimes defining an entire decade in a single story. When done well, these films reach the very peak of cinema, and their big reveals keep audiences talking for decades after release.
