La marca del hombre lobo.Jacinto Molina grew up in Francoist Spain, the son of an extremely successful furrier. As a young boy, he was surrounded by death in the aftermath of the civil war, losing friends and family members, and passing corpses in the streets and fields around Madrid. Two of Molina’s uncles, both collectors who ran in artistic circles, introduced him to a bohemian lifestyle and range of interests. He met famous painters (Jose Gutierréz Solana), writers (Camilo José Cela), and matadors (Manolete); he was entranced by comic books, the movies, and the occult. When, at his elite boarding school, he was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, he knew to respond with the respectable aspiration of “architect.” Instead, he would become Paul Naschy.Naschy is now synonymous with a mid-century surge in Gothic Eurohorror that replicated in continental Europe the success of Hammer Films in the UK.

The Simpsons’ annual “Treehouse of Horror” Halloween specials were a seasonal highlight and a strong opportunity for the animated series to truly let loose and explore radical riffs on celebrated horror touchstones like The Shining, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and even classic genre archetypes like King Kong and The Twilight Zone. It’s appreciated that The Simpsons hasn’t turned its back on this annual tradition and that it’s still going strong. There are now more “Treehouse of Horror” episodes than there are days in October. Now, despite the pedigree of the “Treehouse of Horror” specials, they’ve become increasingly inconsistent and lazy in many regards, much like The Simpsons as a whole.
The Simpsons’ “Treehouse of Horror” entries now just tackle the biggest pop culture trends, rather than explicitly telling horror stories. Instead of episodes that are focused on successful horror films from the past few years like Smile,...

One of the most famous classic rock songs ever is The Eagles’ “Hotel California.” The tune has a lyric that alludes to the name of another rock band that was popular at the same time as The Eagles. The band in question might not have been big Eagles fans.
The Eagles’ ‘Hotel California’ tips its hat to Steely Dan
“Hotel California” feels more like an Edgar Allan Poe short story than the average pop song. The tune has inspired a lot of speculation. One of the song’s seemingly straightforward lines is actually layered. The lyric “They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can’t kill the beast” was meant as a nod to the popular jazz rock band Steely Dan.
During an interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, The Eagles’ Glenn Frey discussed why “Hotel California” has a Steely Dan reference. “One of the things that impressed...

“Don’t Move” is a Netflix movie starring Finn Wittrock, Kelsey Asbille. With Moray Treadwell, and Daniel Francis. It is directed by Brian Netto and Adam Schindler.
“Don’t Move” is a film that relies heavily on a limited number of characters and minimal settings, channeling its entire strength into the script and direction. With a solid premise, the directors manage to create a functional movie, presenting a tense thriller with some interesting plot twists and moments of genuine suspense. But does it leave a lasting impression? That remains to be seen.
Plot Summary
The story begins with a woman standing on the edge of a cliff, contemplating suicide. A man appears and kindly persuades her not to go through with it. However, after they leave the scene together, the man kidnaps her and administers a drug that renders her immobile.

To this day, Rod Serling's sci-fi anthology series "The Twilight Zone" regularly tops lists of the best TV shows of all time. Serling, and a team of some of the best sci-fi authors of the 1950s and 1960s, conceived of 156 miniature morality stories, usually with a supernatural bent, and in so doing changed the very face of television. Sci-fi and horror were considered more commercially viable, inspiring a new slew of imitators and a shift in the public's attention. Serling also introduced a unique form of storytelling efficiency with "The Twilight Zone," proving that an entire, closed morality fable could be wrapped up in a mere 25 minutes (or 51 minutes in the show's fourth season). Serling was also careful to explicitly state a moral in every episode, making "The Twilight Zone" a fantastic social commentary.

Some classic rock songs were thrown together haphazardly, but the best of the best took a lot of planning. For example, one aspect of The Eagles’ “Hotel California” took weeks to complete. The Eagles’ Don Henley dismissed the idea that all this work counted as perfectionism from his bandmates.
The Eagles’ ‘Hotel California’ has amazing guitar solos that connect to its setting
Most pop and rock hits are over in three minutes or so. Meanwhile, “Hotel California” goes on for over six minutes. One of the reasons for the song’s titanic length is its narrative, which feels more like a short story by Edgar Allan Poe than a 1970s pop song. Another reason the song goes on for so long is its dueling guitar solos by Don Felder and Joe Walsh. The solos give “Hotel California” a Latin rock flair that works well for a tune about the Golden State,...

Despite Marge’s ominous warning, The Simpsons’ first “Treehouse of Horror” episode wasn’t really all that scary or graphic. But it did trick a lot of kids into enjoying the work of literary master Edgar Allan Poe.

As the years progressed, the annual Halloween episodes did become more violent. Just a few years later, “Treehouse of Horror V” found Groundskeeper Willie taking an axe to the spine not once, not twice, but thrice.
In 1997, the eighth “Treehouse of Horror” episode became the first to be broadcast in the age of the TV ratings system, which was introduced in January of that year. So The Simpsons opted to parody this development by beginning the show with a visit from the good old “Fox Censor,” whose job is to protect us “from reality.” But after cutting the episode’s crack-pipe references, and informing audiences of the new parental guidance policy,...

The 1960s saw the release of many classic horror films, including Psycho, The Birds, and Carnival of Souls. My favorite 1960s horror film is more over the top than any of those. It’s also possible that the movie in question had an impact on the world of religion.
My favorite 1960s horror film makes an Edgar Allan Poe story even darker
During the 1960s, director Roger Corman made a series of Gothic horror films based on short stories by Edgar Allan Poe. Almost all of these films starred horror icon Vincent Price. One of the most famous is The Masque of the Red Death. The original story is about Prospero, a prince who hides in a castle with his court while a disease known as the “Red Death” ravages the countryside.

As a follow up to the excellent "Bram Stoker's Dracula Starring Bela Lugosi" graphic novel, Kerry Gammill and El Garing return for “Mary Shelley's Frankenstein Starring Boris Karloff." A new adaptation that remains faithful to Mary Shelley's original novel, the graphic novel features Boris Karloff's in a new vision for Frankenstein's Monster, and Sara Karloff, daughter of Boris Karloff, served as an executive consultant on the project. I had the pleasure of catching up with her recently to talk about the graphic novel, her thoughts on the 1931 film and Boris Karloff's performance, and her favorite films that star her father. For those who like to really indulge in the Halloween season, Find Familiar Spirits’ next high-end curated potable is for the horror fans: Macabre Spirits, referred to as “the world’s first tequila made by and for fans of horror.”

This weekend is The International Edgar Allan Poe Festival & Awards, commemorating the 175th anniversary of Poe's death in Baltimore. Taking place from October 4th - 6th, the event also celebrates a big milestone: the 60th anniversary of Roger Corman and Vincent Price's The Masque of the Red Death.
The event includes a panel of special guests to talk about the film and its legacy, including Victoria Price, whom I had the pleasure of speaking with to talk about the importance of the film, Vincent Price's lasting impact, and her Halloween celebrations.
The festival will have a 60th anniversary screening of Roger Corman and Vincent Price's The Masque of Red Death, which is a personal favorite of mine.
Victoria Price: Me too! Roger was one of those people I thought was going to live forever, so it's strange to not have him here.
He left such an impression on the people he interacted with.

Almost two years have gone by since A24 announced that production was underway on the psychological horror film The Front Room, with Brandy Norwood taking on the lead role and Max and Sam Eggers – the younger brothers of The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman director Robert Eggers – at the helm. Fans of the comedy horror Bodies Bodies Bodies will be disappointed to learn that the movie will leave Netflix on Sept. 19, 2024. But the good news is that a long list of horror comedies is available on the streaming service to fill the void. And don't miss this year's Netflix & Chills lineup.
Bodies Bodies Bodies and other horror comedies are a unique subgenre of horror that mixes slasher elements with absurd comedic ones. Mixing comedy with horror is nothing new, as Edgar Allan Poe and other writers often combined the two in their works.
Bride of Chucky
Bride of Chucky is the fourth installment of the Child's Play franchise, written by creator Don Mancini and directed by Ronny Yu, also known for Freddy vs. Jason (2003). Brad Dourif returns as the voice of Chucky, with Jennifer Tilly portraying Tiffany Valentine, a role she would reprise in several other installments of the franchise.

Much has been said about Stephen King, the prolific author of dozens of novels, screenplays, teleplays, and even a few comic books and a stage musical. However, less has been said about Stephen King: Pop Culture Influencer. While King's name has become about as prestigious as other writers whose works have stood the test of time like Shakespeare and Edgar Allan Poe, King is one of the few titans of culture who's been alive while his star rose to such great heights, allowing him to enjoy a level of reputation that other artists only reach posthumously. As such, King has parlayed this fame into being a sort of media guru of sorts; while he's not and has never passed himself off as what we know to be an influencer today, he's regularly offered his opinions and suggestions on the art he enjoys almost as an offshoot of the nonfiction he's...

Much to the surprise of, well, no one, The Crow isn't exactly eyeing a "caw-some" weekend at the North American box office. Lionsgate did its best to keep reviews under wraps until the remake was already playing, though moviegoers are smarter than that and decided against flocking to theaters yesterday evening.
With a dismal $650,000 from previews, it was handily beaten by Blink Twice, the new thriller directed by Zoe Kravitz and starring Channing Tatum.
As things stand, The Crow will only fly as high as $6 million - $9 million at the domestic box office this weekend. With Blink Twice aiming for $7 million to $8 million (and playing in an additional 500 theaters), Rupert Sanders' reboot of the 1992 cult classic starring Brandon Lee will be fighting for fourth place.
Yes, fourth. With a reported $50 million budget, that could be a problem.

For over 15 years, a remake of “The Crow” has been in development with countless directors and stars cycling in and out. A new spin on the stylistically influential comic book movie from 1994 that is mostly remembered for the tragic on-set death of star Brandon Lee would fall apart just as quickly it would generate heat or a star to coalesce in some way. At various points in time actors like Bradley Cooper, Jason Momoa and Luke Evans were attached to prior iterations of the project. All of them went away.
But now, a new version of “The Crow” finally opens wide courtesy of Lionsgate Friday, with Bill Skarsgård as the doomed title character and pop star FKA Twigs as Shelly, his equally doomed fiancée. Prepare for Alan Cumming’s thrilling and theatrical voice to lull you to sleep. The host of “The Traitors” is partnering with the meditation app, Calm, for a reading of “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, TheWrap has exclusively learned. The Sleep Story is available now on Calm.
“I really enjoyed recording this Sleep Story, taking my character on ‘The Traitors’ on a soothing, suspenseful bedtime journey with Calm,” Cumming said in a Tuesday statement to press. “I hope my voice will be able to lull people off to sleep, and maybe even encourage them to dream about being a traitor.”
Fittingly for the celebrity behind “The Traitors,” “The Cask of Amontillado” is one of Poe’s most esteemed short stories. Set in an unnamed Italian city, it follows a man named Montresor who invites his friend Fortunato down to his family vaults, presumably to sample a cask of amontillado.

Tim Burton’s movies have a memorable visual style that keeps fans coming back to them again and again. The Batman director himself was asked what makes his movies different and his response was unusual. Burton noted that even people who aren’t film buffs can sense his aesthetic.
Tim Burton’s movies take inspiration from a slew of oddities
Burton’s films combine some of the dark, distorted visuals of silent horror films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari with elements of fairy tales and Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion creations. He’s also heavily pulled from Gothic fiction, such as the Edgar Allan Poe adaptations starring horror legend Vincent Price. While he usually makes color films, he still emphasizes black and white in his color palettes. Even when his movies have subpar stories, they’re usually interesting to look at, whether you are touring the spooky 18th-century woods of...

With her Harry Potter books, which were later adapted into a popular and successful film series, author J.K. Rowling raised and inspired several generations of children around the world. The series is currently being adapted for television, but despite the fact that the series is still one of the most cherished ones of all time, the author has recently been in the spotlight not because of her works, but because of politics.
Namely, for a while now, J.K. The Addams Family is a classic, but Wednesday really takes things up a notch, so it’s no surprise she got her own show. When the first season premiered in 2022, it was a total hit. However, like any TV show, it did get some negative feedback from the audience as well.
Jenna Ortega and Emma Myers in Wednesday (Netflix)
With the new season, it looks like the public’s feedback has been heard, and improvements are being made. One major talking point on social media might set the tone for the upcoming episodes. Fans can expect things to be very different from now on.
Wednesday Season 2 Will Be Scarier Still from Wednesday Season 1 (Netflix)
Many fans expect adaptations to stay true to the original, which makes it challenging to create a movie or series that appeals to a broad audience. The result won’t always please everyone, but some elements...

Pennywise the Clown is arguably horror author Stephen King’s most famous creation. During an interview, he discussed the impact his novel It will have on popular culture after his death. His take on the situation seems a little myopic. The Carrie author doesn’t take his cinematic legacy into account as much as he should.
Stephen King said Pennywise the Clown will be around forever
During a 2022 interview with Bloody Disgusting, King revealed that he viewed Pennywise as his sturdiest creation. “I think that when I die I will kind of disappear from the paperback racks,” he opined. “But that f****** clown is going to live forever. That’s one thing I’ve got going for me.”
While King has written several sequels over the years, he won’t write a sequel to It. “Well, I don’t have a relationship to Pennywise now,” King said. “Because I have...

The presence of drag performers at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris was proof of liberal democracy’s demonic tendencies, or so says the man who made a career off of doing drag and buddying up with the literal son of Satan.

If your formula for a tragic intergenerational family drama turned kaleidoscopic ghost story ain’t broke, don’t fix it. So says horror heavyweight Mike Flanagan, who got candid when accepting the Cheval Noir career award at the opening weekend of Fantasia Fest (July 18 to August 4) in Montreal.
In a Q&a with Fangoria editor Michael Gingold, Flanagan was asked about the key to adapting the great literary works of horror authors like Stephen King, Shirley Jackson, and Edgar Allan Poe. The multi-hyphenate storyteller, who made the leap from writer/director at Intrepid Pictures to showrunner at Netflix in 2018 (but has since moved to an overall deal at Amazon), pointed out the structural similarities between his beloved indie features and his most successful prestige streaming projects.

Mike Flanagan has become the most important horror filmmaker of our time. In 2018, he signed a deal with Netflix, which gave him the long-awaited opportunity to create an anthology work.
He directed and wrote The Haunting of Hill House, a series that brought incredible success to Flanagan and had amazing ratings for streaming. Even the master of the horror industry, Stephen King, called it a work of genius.
Since then, Flanagan has been delighting fans of horror every fall with a miniseries with a special, creepy atmosphere that is conveyed not by fountains of blood, but by masterfully written dialogue and brilliant direction.
At the same time, most of his works are adaptations of novels in a modern way or in a new form. For example, The Haunting of Hill House is a loose interpretation of Shirley Jackson's novel of the same name, and The Fall of the House of Usher...

Family Portrait.“You can’t always trust photographs,” may just be one line out of many in Lucy Kerr’s decisively polyphonous Family Portrait (2023). It is also a meta-statement encapsulating the film’s source of narrative tensions—that glaze of artificiality over every family portrait ever taken. Kerr’s debut feature stars Deragh Campbell as the protagonist, Katy. She and her boyfriend, Olek (Chris Galust), are the youngest couple in Katy’s big family—not to mention unmarried and childless—which makes them undeclared outsiders. There is no dramatic reason for them to be so eager to leave the holiday home, and yet they should get going. It’s late morning. The breakfast is lavish, with just the right amount of chaotic buzz. Olek is tasked with taking a family portrait, which will become this year’s Christmas card, but something feels off. Tensions mount as whispers of a recently...

Edgar Allan Poe's C. Auguste Dupin in 1841's "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" is the first fictional detective to appear in literature, but Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes is hands down the most well-known detective in all of pop culture.
Identifying himself as a "consulting" detective, Sherlock Holmes is intelligent beyond all reason, analytical to a fault, and emotionally distant due to his obsessions with logic. But when he's hot on the case in an investigation, his flair for the dramatics kicks in and he lives to show off his findings. Not because he wants to be the center of attention, but because he must let everyone know just how brilliant he is for cracking the case. He's also a morally questionable individual, who has no problems lying to law enforcement or committing petty crimes of his own if it means getting one step closer to solving the mystery.

Now we’re only a couple months away from the film’s theatrical release date of September 6th (a date that puts it in direct competition with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice), and A24 has just unveiled a trailer. One of Tim Burton's first professional gigs after his stint at the California Institute of Arts was working as an animator, storyboard artist, and graphic designer at Disney. Burton was born and raised in Burbank, California, which is where Disney's offices are located, so he more or less grew up in the company's shadow. He worked at the Mouse House for a few years in the early '80s, working on films like "The Fox and the Hound," "Tron," and "The Black Cauldron." It should be noted that this was a notoriously bad time for Disney, and the financial failure of the ultra-ambitious and very expensive "Cauldron" (it cost $44 million) led to an open conversation about Disney shutting down its animation department.
Of course, while Disney was floundering financially, they were freer to experiment artistically. I maintain that Disney's most interesting movies came at a time when their kiddie-flick successes didn't define them.

Tobe Hooper’s gonzo massacre movie set the template for so many horror films that were to follow – but retains a uniquely disturbing power all of its own
In 1974, Tobe Hooper released this intimately upsetting and disturbing horror: a gonzo-macabre masterpiece inspired by the true story of serial killer Ed Gein, who was arrested in 1957 for grisly atrocities in remote Wisconsin. (Texas sounds better in the title.)
Hooper’s minimalist shocker appeared just 14 years after Hitchcock’s sleek Psycho, which was also indirectly inspired by Gein (via the novel by Robert Bloch). Psycho is a far more refined variation on the Gein theme, more like Edgar Allan Poe. In contrast, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre feels utterly different: gritty, gloomy, social-realist; a no-budget account of how the Gein horror might have felt to those who actually encountered it. It feels closer, in its down-home style, to something like Barbara Loden’s Wanda,...

When Mike Flanagan first spoke to Carla Gugino about his latest Netflix production, The Fall of the House of Usher, he didn’t yet know what it would be beyond something inspired by the work of Edgar Allan Poe. “It was going to be something around a family and elements of Succession,” recalls Gugino. Having worked with Flanagan on several horror projects (Gerald’s Game, The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass), Gugino was confident that the writer-director would find the perfect thematic material for our present moment. “It’s extremely appropriate, destroying yourself by not opening yourself up to actually seeing your effect on the world,” says the actress of the Sackler family-inspired narrative, which turns the Ushers of Poe’s 1840 short story into an elite clan who earned their riches from the opioid crisis. “His humanistic take on the genre,” Gugino says of Flanagan,...

Mike Flanagan began his filmmaking career in 2011 with "Absentia," a Kickstarter-backed horror movie about a pregnant woman whose missing husband mysteriously returns after an unexplained seven-year absence. He gained mainstream attention with 2013's "Oculus," a gripping horror film about a haunted mirror that technically takes place almost entirely in one room. Then, in 2016, Flanagan offered the one-two-three punch of "Hush," "Before I Wake," and the mainstream sequel "Ouija: Origin of Evil." He was now a recognizable force in the horror community.
Flanagan gathered a huge fanbase with his subsequent adaptations of several famous horror novels. In 2017, he adapted Stephen King's "Gerald's Game" into an excellent feature film. In 2018, he turned Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House" into a TV miniseries. In 2019, he made "Doctor Sleep," a convoluted ghost story based on King's sequel to "The Shining." New Exorcist Director Mike Flanagan Is 'Terrified' To Be Taking On The Horror Classic [Atx Festival]
Earlier this month, horror mastermind Mike Flanagan was announced as the new heir apparent to the "Exorcist" franchise, assuming the reins from David Gordon Green in what's being described as a "radical new take" on the truly scary source material. Little is known about the "Haunting of Hill House" and "Midnight Mass" creator's plans for the long-running property, but at the annual Atx festival in Austin today, Flanagan spoke frankly about the pressure of crafting a new story in the shadow of one of the most frightening tales ever told.
"For 'The Exorcist' specifically, I'm f**king terrified," Flanagan admitted at a panel attended by /Film's Ryan Scott. A spotlight on adaptations titled "From Book To Script To Screen," the event also featured a number of other panelists, including the executive producers behind AMC's "Interview with the Vampire," ABC's "Will Trent," Netflix's "Black Mirror," and the Apple TV+ series "Silo.

“Quoth the Raven ‘Nevermore.’” With those words, over a century and a half ago, Edgar Allen Poe cemented the iconography of the bird as a metaphor for death in pitch-black ink. Though “The Raven” has hatched many cinematic imitators (including the 1935 film starring Bela Lugosi that was “suggested” by it and the 1963 film by the late Roger that more explicitly adapted it), few have carried with them the crater-like sadness that pervades the narrative poem. And while it isn’t explicitly an adaptation of “The Raven,” Daina O. Pusić’s feature debut, Tuesday, feels the weight of death’s visitation in the form of a macaw, resulting in a film of tremendous emotion, spirit, and paradoxically restraint and ambition.
Pusić’s expansive zeal for confronting the subject of dying initially takes the form of placing us in the very head of Death (voiced by Arinzé Kene), which bursts with the voices of those,...

Not so long ago, we reported that the upcoming Blumhouse and Universal planned remake of The Exorcist had seemingly found its director, as renowned genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan was in talks to direct the movie. This news broke not long after David Gordon Green, who directed last year’s reboot film The Exorcist: Believer, left the project altogether. At the time, the studios announced a big $400-million trilogy, but after Green’s movie failed completely, they were looking for a change of direction. Now, we can confirm both that Flanagan has signed on to direct the next movie, and that the studios have given up on their original idea.
Namely, the trilogy plan was completely scrapped and Flanagan will be given more creative freedom to do what he wants, and from what we can gather, the series is heading into completely new territory, as Flanagan doesn’t really intend to...

Doctor Sleep director Mike Flanagan will take the Exorcist series in a ‘fresh, bold’ direction following the disappointing reception to 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer.
Universal has confirmed the rumours that have been whirling around for some time now, announcing that Mike Flanagan will be stepping into the director’s chair to oversee the future of The Exorcist. The move follows the exit of David Gordon Green after last year’s franchise relaunch, The Exorcist: Believer failed to ignite much in the way of audience interest. Director and showrunner Mike Flanagan has always been a "listener" when understanding the human condition.
While his genre of choice has been horror, and primarily psychological horror at that, he has made a career out of listening to what people have to say about religion, guilt, insanity, and death.
He is as much a spiritual guru as a movie director.
Even from his early works, like Absentia and Oculus, one could see Flanagan as a visionary and an interactive designer, determined to deliver the audience an experience they crafted, a game, a nightmare they could vicariously live through archetypical characters.
