For the past three or four years (at least), Saturday Night Live has been treading water as it geared up for its historic golden anniversary, a landmark that no other comedy show has come close to realizing. Sure, the show was stuck in mediocre mode, but watch out when SNL blew off the doors for Season 50! There’d be four documentaries, Olympics cameos, an anniversary concert, books, commemorative T-shirts and a parade of the biggest comedy stars of the past half-century.

But unfortunately — and inevitably — SNL failed to meet the moment. While oversized expectations meant the show was doomed to disappoint, SNL still managed to find multiple ways to screw up the biggest year in TV comedy history. Up to 2020 I used to watch a lot of stand-up comedy. I guess my introduction to the genre was through Seinfeld. After that, I used to actively seek out old videos of Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Jim Carrey, George Carlin, and every other comic who built the bedrock of this profession. And I used to keep track of the newcomers, especially from India, because it was so interesting to get fresh and hilarious perspectives on things I encountered in my daily life. But then the pandemic happened, live shows were shut down, and all those Zoom sessions didn’t really cut it anymore. Then Bo Burnham released Inside and changed everything. Crowdwork didn’t seem funny anymore. Observations about urinals and, I don’t know, sliced bread fell flat. Jokes about the transgender community and sexist humor, which weren’t amusing to me to begin with, felt all the more crass.

Few stars in entertainment were as bright as Eddie Murphy during the 1980s. It also meant the Saturday Night Live star did things his own way, including avoiding SNL afterparties. That is, until one music superstar convinced Murphy to go.

Saturday Night Live afterparties are legendary and a key aspect of the show's 50-year history. Countless stories have been shared (or alluded to) over the years as cast members gave a behind-the-scenes look at how SNL blows off steam after a show.

One would think Eddie Murphy stood at the center of SNL's parties during the '80s. But that wasn't the case, as Murphy explained during a visit to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

"I was 19, and it's 1980, '81," Murphy said. "So I was the only Black person up there, and I was the only teenager up there. So I was like, 'I don't want to party with them!

When I first learned that Sly Stallone had it out for Eddie Murphy, I assumed it was because Murphy became a mega movie star after taking over for the Rocky star in Beverly Hills Cop. But that comedy’s success wasn’t why Stallone was irate with Murphy — it was a behind-the-scenes rumor on another movie that generated the beef.

First, some background. Stallone was hired to star in Beverly Hills Cop while Murphy was still an up-and-coming comic on Saturday Night Live. The original screenplay had plenty of comedy elements, but Stallone rewrote the script to crank up the action elements. According to Far Out, Sly’s version of the story would have ended with a showdown between a Lamborghini and a freight train. Sounds like Stallone, all right.

It’s been a few days since Nurve, whose real name is Justin Woody, was crowned the winner of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 17, and it hasn’t quite clicked for the queen who has been celebrating since Friday and is now up at the crack of dawn, speaking to the press.

NBC’s comedy institution “Saturday Night Live” (“SNL”) is crossing the pond to launch a British edition in partnership with Sky.

The iconic late-night sketch show, which has been a cornerstone of American pop culture since 1975, will debut “Saturday Night Live U.K.” in 2026, bringing its signature mix of political satire, celebrity impersonations and musical performances to British and Irish audiences.

“SNL” mastermind Lorne Michaels, who created the original NBC series, will serve as executive producer for the U.K. adaptation while continuing to steer the American mothership. The London-based version will follow the same live format that has made “SNL” a cultural juggernaut for nearly five decades.

“For over 50 years ‘Saturday Night Live’ has held a unique position in TV and in our collective culture, reflecting and creating the global conversation all under the masterful comedic guidance of Lorne Michaels,” said Cecile Frot-Coutaz, CEO of Sky Studios and chief content officer at Sky.
