Duster Season 1 Review: High-Octane Caper in the Southwest
Image
Duster launches viewers into a world where chrome-bright Plymouths carve dust trails across desert highways and every glance carries a hidden agenda. Set in 1972 Phoenix, the series pairs Jim Ellis (Josh Holloway), a smooth-talking getaway driver running cash for crime boss Saxton Higgs (Keith David), with Nina Hayes (Rachel Hilson), the FBI’s first Black female agent determined to prove her worth in a bureau resistant to change. Under J.J. Abrams and Latoya Morgan’s guidance, Duster marries pulp thriller instincts with moments of quiet character study, letting rust-toned landscapes mirror inner conflicts.

Visually, the show bathes each frame in warm hues that recall both Spaghetti Westerns and ’70s exploitation flicks, while the soundtrack—packed with James Brown grit and Hendrix riffs—underscores every high-octane chase and hushed interrogation. Editing choices shift gear from punchy cross-cuts in traffic pursuits to lingering close-ups during Hayes’s hushed discoveries. In its narrative design,...

Wes Anderson movies: All 11 films ranked worst to best
Image
Wes Anderson is the singularly talented filmmaker who has quickly gone from indie darling to Oscar favorite in just a little over two decades, creating a number of quirky, visually splendid classics. Let's take a look back at all 11 of Anderson's films, ranked worst to best.

Anderson made his directorial debut with "Bottle Rocket" (1996), released when he was just 27-years-old. He received his first Oscar nomination five years later: Best Original Screenplay for "The Royal Tenenbaums" (2001). He followed that eight years later with a Best Animated Feature bid for the stop-motion film "Fantastic Mr. Fox" (2009). Another Best Original Screenplay nomination followed for "Moonrise Kingdom" (2012). Then he hit the Oscar jackpot with Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay nominations for "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (2014) -- well, almost hit the jackpot, since he went home empty-handed from those awards, losing all three to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for "Birdman." He...

7 Years Before NCIS, Pauley Perrette Starred in a Cult-Hit 2-Season Legal Drama That Was Unfortunately Canceled
Image
Before she became everyone’s favorite goth forensic genius on NCIS, Pauley Perrette had already been in a short-lived but beloved legal drama that flew under the radar. A whole seven years before stepping into Abby Sciuto’s lab coat, she starred in a quirky two-season series that’s now got cult status among TV buffs.

Sadly, despite its charm and a loyal fanbase, the network pulled the plug way too soon. It’s one of those “canceled too early” heartbreakers and a hidden gem in Perrette’s pre-NCIS resume.

Before NCIS, Pauley Perrette starred in Murder One, a forgotten legal drama

Seven years before NCIS made her a household name, Pauley Perrette was already serving up standout performances — this time in a sharp, short-lived legal drama called Murder One. The show ran for two seasons on ABC, and Perrette joined the cast in Season 2, which aired in 1996. It didn’t last long,...

Meet The Girl On ‘The Evil Dead’ Poster
Image
Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead has a gripping poster, featuring a beautiful girl rising out of an open grave on a dark, foggy night with a rickety wooden cross behind her. A hairy, monstrous arm is wrapped around her neck, pulling her back into the open grave, as her arm beseeches for help that will never come. There’s just one problem with the poster—that mysterious girl and that scene Aren’T in the film.

Meet Bridget Hoffman, the girl who is (and isn’t) in Sam Raimi’s classic Evil Dead franchise!

“Yes, that’s me,” actress Bridget Hoffman smiles, playfully recreating her pose, with her right hand in the air and her left arm wrapped around her own neck.

“I wound up on the poster for The Evil Dead even though I’m not in it!” she said. “I’m from Michigan. I went to Michigan State University...

10 Movies With the Greatest Plot Twists of All Time
Image
Films have a unique way of showing us how stories are built, broken, and reimagined, and nowhere is that more evident than in a well-executed plot twist. It reshapes the entire experience and forces audiences to question everything they have just seen.

A great twist flips the narrative on its head. It isn’t, however, just about pulling the rug out for shock value. None of it matters if the scene you’re building toward for the entirety of your film falls flat. We’re looking at you, the much dreaded, “It was all a dream.” Succintly put, a good twist builds on three very specific things – anticipation, revelation, and satisfaction – and it only hits hardest when it ties into your characters and themes.

In this instance, we’re taking ranking ten movies that make us sit up stunned with the realization that we’ve been played, perhaps in the best way possible.

New Arthouse Cinema To Rise On Upper West Side At Site Of Old Metro Theater
Image
The former Metro theater on Broadway at 99th Street is set to be turned into a five-screen arthouse theater thanks to grants from the city and state of New York and private donors including the Kate Capshaw and Steven Spielberg Hearthland Foundation, the Klingenstein-Martell Foundation and the Brandt Jackson Foundation.

The Upper West Side Cinema Center, a newly formed nonprofit, completed the $6.9 million purchase of the building, said president and co-founder, producer Ira Deutchman. He launched the center with Adeline Monzier to bring “art cinema back to the Upper West Side, which has become a cinema desert since the demise of the Lincoln Plaza Cinema.” The yet-to-be-named arthouse will feature movie classics, foreign films, documentaries, and first-run independent films. The plan also includes an education center and a café and lounge open to the street.

New York’s Metro Theater Is Being Revived by Upper West Side Cinema Center
Image
Fans of cinema rejoice! It’s not often a movie palace from yesteryear is given a chance at new life, but today it was announced that New York City’s Metro Theater on Broadway at 99th Street has been purchased and that the new owners intend to rebuild and reopen. Shuttered and gutted since 2005, the Metro was built between 1932 and 1933 amidst the Great Depression, when theater owners were looking to downsize from the grandeur of movie palaces to smaller houses that were easier to maintain. Though the interior of the building was demolished, the Art Deco facade was and is still considered a historical landmark and remains intact.

A recently formed nonprofit organization known as Upper West Side Cinema Center has bought the building for $6.9 million, shared the group’s President and Co-Founder, Ira Deutchman. These funds were gathered through a combination of grants provided by Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature,...

'The System Is Not Really Designed for Us': Halle Berry Claims Black Female Actors Should Stop 'Coveting' Oscars
Image
The long wait for another Black female actor to win the Best Actress Academy Award goes on as Halle Berry remains the only one to take home Hollywood's biggest honor. Frustrated with that wait, Berry advises Black women in the film industry to stop "coveting" Oscars because they aren't "designed" for women who look like her to win them.

Speaking on the newly-released Apple TV+ documentary, Number One on the Call Sheet (via The Guardian), which chronicles the influence and plights of iconic Black actors in the movie industry, Berry addressed the fact she remains the lone Black Best Actress Oscar winner 23 years after her historic triumph. As groundbreaking as her achievement is, Berry thinks it's lost some meaning given that no other Black woman has succeeded since her win, claiming the long wait has “forced me to ask myself, did it matter? Did it really change anything for women of color?...

Halle Berry Reflects on Being the Only Black Best Actress Oscar Winner: “Did It Really Change Anything for Women of Color?”
Image
Halle Berry is opening up about being the first — and only — Black woman to have won the Oscar for best actress in the nearly 100-year history of the Academy Awards.

In the Apple TV+ documentary Number One on the Call Sheet, Berry reflects on what has happened since she won the Oscar in 2002, for her role in Monster’s Ball. In that time, no other Black actress has taken home the award.

“It’s forced me to ask myself, did it matter?” Berry asks. “Did it really change anything for women of color? For my sisters? For our journey?”

The documentary shows a montage of Black actresses losing out to white women at the Oscars. Overall, 13 Black actresses have been nominated for the honor, including, most recently, Cynthia Erivo, who’s been nominated twice. This year, Erivo was nominated for her role in Wicked but lost to Anora star Mikey Madison.

The Seven Twilight Zone Segments Directed By Horror Master Wes Craven
Image
"The Twilight Zone" is one of those shows so ingrained in popular culture that it's become synonymous with anything mysterious or spooky, even for people who have never seen an episode before. Conceived by Rod Serling as a method of exploring social commentary and often controversial ideas that are still relevant today, the original series first aired in 1959 and ran for five seasons. Serling wrote the bulk of the teleplays and narrated in his own inimitable way, sometimes inserting himself into an episode while dangling an ever-present cigarette. "The Twilight Zone" was also a showcase for some great actors: William Shatner, Burgess Meredith, Buster Keaton, Lee Marvin, Peter Falk, and many others made memorable impressions in classic episodes.

10 years after Serling passed away in 1975, CBS decided to resurrect the show. Although 1983's "Twilight Zone: The Movie" was a disappointment, the '80s "Twilight Zone" TV revamp was still able to...

Sarah Michelle Gellar Says 'Buffy' Revival "Moving Faster Than Expected"
Image
A Buffy Summers comeback is on the horizon, and it may be happening sooner than anticipated. Sarah Michelle Gellar is set to return for the as-yet-untitled Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival series, which is nearing a pilot order at Hulu. Gellar will reprise her role and executive produce. And in a recent interview, she gave fans many reasons to be excited.

And while Gellar won't lead the upcoming series — the show is set to follow a new slayer, after all — it remains a mystery if any of the other original cast members will return to reprise their roles. Sadly, we know that we won't see an on-screen family reunion between Buffy and her sister Dawn, as Michelle Trachtenberg, who depicted the younger Summers sister, passed away last month. While speaking with People, Gellar delivered the good news, as well as a call for patience from fans who are eagerly awaiting...

The One Director with More Oscar-Winning Films Than Spielberg
Image
Earning more than one Academy Award during a career is a surprising rarity for actors. Katharine Hepburn holds the record of four Oscars, while the rare feat of winning three rests with Jack Nicholson, Daniel Day-Lewis, Walter Brennan, Meryl Streep, Ingrid Bergman, and Frances McDormand. For filmmakers themselves, it is a bit of a different metric, as the ones behind the camera push all aspects of the production. A win for a film is often attributed, in part, to their work.

Steven Spielberg's work has been monumental in defining the modern face of cinema, and the success of his films at the Academy Awards reflects this unparalleled career over five decades, starting when Jaws became his first film to win an Oscar. Fifty years of excellence seem challenging to beat, yet one director's films won more Oscars within four decades: William Wyler. Let's compare the impressive records of the two cinema titans.

12 Female Directors Who Are Changing Hollywood
Image
Hollywood has always been a tough industry to crack, but women are proving time and again that they belong behind the camera just as much as anyone else. From science to business to filmmaking, women have been making history for centuries, pushing boundaries and leaving their mark. In Hollywood, female directors are doing just that—reshaping the industry, one film at a time.

Back in the early days of cinema, trailblazers like Alice Guy-Blaché and Lois Weber took the director’s chair, paving the way for future generations. Their work inspired legends like Ida Lupino, Madeline Anderson, Agnès Varda, and Penny Marshall—women who brought fresh perspectives and unforgettable storytelling to the big screen. Today, female directors continue to break barriers, bringing their creativity and unique vision to audiences worldwide.

Whether they’re redefining genres, telling bold new stories, or giving underrepresented voices a platform, these women are changing the game.

How Mikey Madison beat Demi Moore for the Best Actress Oscar
Image
Anora scored five Oscars on Sunday, but one of its wins took many, including Jack Antonoff, by surprise. Demi Moore was the odds-on favorite to win Best Actress, but The Substance star fell to Anora star Mikey Madison. But Madison's victory is not very surprising when you get down to it. Here's how she pulled off the win.

1. The stronger movie prevails over narrative

Anora won five Oscars from six nominations, with four wins for Sean Baker: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. The Palme d'Or champ was the Oscar frontrunner for most of the season, with just a short blip after its Golden Globe shutout before it claimed the Producers Guild of America and Directors Guild of America Awards to reassert itself. The Substance had five nominations, a great haul for a body-horror film, and won one, Best Makeup and Hairstyling. It...

When it comes to Oscars statistics, here are the ones that really matter
Image
Here at Gold Derby, we traffic in data. We use numbers, odds, and statistics to predict awards. But when it comes to the Oscars, some statistics matter more.

Famously, the rates of milk consumption and divorce in Colorado have been shown to correlate closely in the past few years. But how much are they influencing each other? Probably not a whole lot.

So, when it comes to the Oscars, which stats are worth paying attention to? We will look at some common data points referenced by prognosticators and tell you which to consider when making your final Oscar picks.

To win Best Picture, you need a Best Director nomination

For a long time, a Best Director nomination was touted as a “must-have” for a film vying to win Best Picture. In the past few years, Best Picture contenders Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and Trial of the Chicago 7 did not receive Best Director nominations,...

5 reasons why Fernanda Torres could pull off an upset win for Best Actress for ‘I’m Still Here’
Image
Without a doubt, this year's Best Actress race is a nail-biter. With frontrunners Demi Moore (The Substance) and Mikey Madison (Anora) having split the major precursor awards, prognosticators are divided between who will take home the top prize. Which leaves room for dark horse contender Fernanda Torres (I'm Still Here) to potentially pull off an upset.

Here are five reasons why the Brazilian actress could surprise everyone and take home the Oscar for Best Actress this Sunday.

See Video Interview: Fernanda Torres

1. She seized her momentum at a key time with the Golden Globe win

Torres solidified her status as a serious Oscar contender back in January when she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Actress. The winner of (either) Best Actress awards at the Globes has gone on to win the Oscar for Best Actress four times in the last six years. While there's no substantive overlap...

We have ourselves a race! The Oscar contests for Best Actor and Best Actress got especially interesting at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday because the winners disagreed with another industry peer group honor, the BAFTA Awards. 'I'm Blown Away': Steve Buscemi Reacts to Hearing He Inspired Robert Pattinson's Newest Movie Role
Image
Robert Pattinson said he channeled Steve Buscemi's Fargo character in Mickey 17, which follows the disposable life of a human guinea pig. Buscemi is still oblivious to Pattinson's role and the film, but he's still floored by the comparison.

Mickey 17 will feature a quirky Easter egg in every scene Robert Pattinson is in. The actor recently revealed his Mickey 17 and 18 reprints emulated Carl Showalter and Gaear Grimsrud, Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare's characters in 1996's Fargo. That explains Mickey 17's eternal optimism, something that's likely shared by previous reprints. Speaking to THR, Buscemi said he's unaware of the compliment, unsure if Pattinson was referring to his accent in the film. Buscemi played iconic roles in Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction but Fargo was a milestone in his career.

Oscars Best Actress breakdown: Why Demi Moore is still the frontrunner in the final days
Image
Originally published Feb. 6, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. Pt; updated Feb. 24, 2025, at 4:10 p.m. Pt

The Oscars race for Best Actress was wholly reset at the Golden Globes when self-described "popcorn actress" Demi Moore (The Substance) prevailed and delivered a speech that was award-worthy in its own right. Suddenly, there was a new Oscar frontrunner. But then Mikey Madison (Anora) fought back at BAFTA, beating the odds to claim a come-from-behind victory. Let's break down this year's Best Actress category, which also includes their fellow nominees Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), and Fernanda Torres (I'm Still Here).

Frontrunner: Demi Moore

Moore's shocking victory at the Globes helped catapult her to the top of Gold Derby's Oscar odds for the first time, surpassing Madison, who had been the favorite to win since September. Not only was Moore's Golden Globe speech powerful in the moment, it also spoke more...

Frances McDormand as Fern in Chloé Zhao's Nomadland

Nomadland, 6.50pm, Film4, Monday, February 24

Chloé Zhao became only the second woman to lift the Best Director Oscar for her consideration of the new generation of US nomads who, hit by financial constraints, call campervans their home as they move from place to place, picking up work and friendship along the way. Zhao's film has an almost zen sense of calm about it even as we watch Frances McDormand's Fern struggling with both grief and the challenges of her new life. Featuring non-professionals, the film moves at an unhurried pace celebrating those small moments of connection, with nature and with other people, that those involved here would no doubt argue, are far more valuable than possessions. Read what Zhao told us about the music in the film.

Demi Moore wins Best Actress at the SAG Awards
Image
Demi Moore won Best Actress for The Substance at Sunday's Screen Actors Guild Awards, adding another wrinkle to the Oscar race.

Moore, who was in first place in the Gold Derby odds, beat Mikey Madison (Anora), Pamela Anderson (The Last Showgirl), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), and Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez).

Still in first place in the Oscar odds, Moore dethroned Madison as the Oscar frontrunner following her Golden Globe victory and inspirational speech, and became the favorite to win SAG, a group that loves a narrative. She also collected the Critics Choice Award and numerous regional critics prizes in the past month — all non-industry awards — but when it was time for the industry to weigh in, BAFTA crowned Madison Best Actress last week. Anora has also shown to be strong with the industry, taking the Producers Guild, Directors Guild, and Writers Guild of America Awards, reestablishing itself as the Best Picture frontrunner.

Who’s up and down in the Oscar race after Sunday’s BAFTA Awards shockers?
Image
BAFTA Awards voters often go by the beat of their own drums, and that independence was fully displayed during Sunday’s ceremony. After winning top awards from the Producers Guild, Directors Guild, and Writers Guild, Best Picture frontrunner Anora won only two awards on Sunday — but its victory for Mikey Madison in Best Actress was significant. Meanwhile, after flopping with the major guilds, The Brutalist rebounded with four wins, including Best Actor for Adrien Brody and Best Director for Brady Corbet. However, The Brutalist couldn’t win Best Film, falling to Conclave, which also won three other awards. Ahead, the biggest takeaways from the BAFTA Awards results and what it all might mean for the Oscars race as winner voting continues until Tuesday.

Best Actress will come down to the wire

8 Takeaways From BAFTA Winners: From Mikey Madison’s Surprise Best Actress Win to ‘Conclave’ and ‘A Real Pain’ Beating ‘Anora’
Image
Spoiler alert: The crazy, unpredictable Oscar season? Still crazy. Still unpredictable.

Fresh off a one-two punch weekend where “Anora” cleaned up at the PGA and DGA Awards, the BAFTAs decided to stir the pot with their own take on the race. If history tells us anything, it’s that BAFTA can be either a crystal ball or a red herring.

In 2024, every BAFTA winner (except for visual effects) went on to win the Oscar, making it the most predictive year in recent memory. The year before, however, BAFTA charted its own path — only “Everything Everywhere All at Once” editor Paul Rogers repeated at the Oscars. So, with the final Oscar voting closing on Tuesday, Feb. 18, let’s break down the key takeaways from BAFTA’s curveballs and what they could mean for Hollywood’s biggest night.

Carlos Diehz stars as Cardinal Benitez in director Edward Berger’s Conclave, a Focus Features release.

Demi Moore on the ‘Shock and Awe’ of First Oscar Nom and Her Blended Family With Bruce Willis: ‘There Is Life After Divorce. There’s a Way to Co-Parent With Love’
Image
On a particularly gloomy afternoon in Los Angeles, Demi Moore walks into the room, her presence instantly brightening the space. Dressed in a chic yet relaxed ensemble, she carries her designer handbag, —but her adorable, tiny, wide-eyed puppy is not with her.

Moore is no stranger to reinvention. From the breakout success of “Ghost” (1990) to the cultural phenomenon of “Indecent Proposal” (1993), and now to her critically acclaimed turn in “The Substance,” she has had a career that defies Hollywood’s conventional wisdom. But this time, something feels different.

“This whole journey has just been a shock and awe,” she says with humility and amusement. “I had no expectations, so everything has been a surprise, and honestly, that’s a really beautiful place to be sitting in.”

At 62, Moore has just earned her first Academy Award nomination for best actress, a recognition that was both unexpected and long overdue. Her performance...

‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Sequel Series With Sarah Michelle Gellar Returning Nears Hulu Pilot Order
Image
In every generation, there is a chosen one — again.

Variety has learned from sources that a sequel series to the beloved show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is nearing a pilot order at Hulu.

Sources say that Sarah Michelle Gellar is in final talks to once again play the iconic title character in the untitled project, although it would focus on a new Slayer and Gellar would appear in a recurring role rather than leading the series.

Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write, showrun, and executive produce. Chloé Zhao is attached to direct and executive produce under her Book of Shadows production banner. Gellar would also executive produce along with Gail Berman. Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui will executive produce via Suite B, while Dolly Parton will executive produce via Sandollar. 20th Television and Searchlight Television will produce. Berman, the Kuzuis, and Parton were all executive producers on the original “Buffy” series.

The Best Actress Oscar nominees are all in a Best Picture nominee for the first time in 47 years
Image
For the first time in 47 years, all five Best Actress Oscar nominees hail from Best Picture nominees.

The Best Actress lineup was the top five in the odds: Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here). Four of those films were widely predicted to score Best Picture nominations except for I’m Still Here, which was in 13th place in the odds; but in the biggest surprise of the day, the Brazilian feature made the cut on Thursday. The other Best Picture nominees are The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, and Nickel Boys.

The last time the Best Actress and Best Picture lineups aligned was during the 1977-78 season when Diane Keaton (Annie Hall) won Best Actress over Jane Fonda (Julia), Marsha Mason (The Goodbye Girl), and The Turning Point stars Anne Bancroft and Shirley MacLaine.

Cynthia Erivo makes Oscar history with second career Best Actress nomination
Image
Cynthia Erivo made Oscar history on Thursday morning with her Best Actress bid for Wicked. She is now only the second Black female performer to receive multiple bids in this category, after Viola Davis.

Erivo plays Elphaba Thropp, the Wicked Witch of the West, in director Jon M. Chu‘s big-budget adaptation of the beloved Broadway stage musical. Wicked actually marks her second Best Actress mention after Harriet (2019), for which she also earned a Best Song bid for “Stand Up” (cowritten with Joshuah Brian Campbell). Wicked received 10 Oscar nominations this year, including for Erivo’s supporting co-star Ariana Grande.

Davis was the first to accomplish such a feat, thanks to her double Best Actress Oscar bids for The Help (2011) and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020). While she lost both of those contests, she did win the Best Supporting Actress prize for Fences (2016); she also had a prior bid in that...

Good Omens | 90 minute finale begins filming
David Tennant
David Tennant and Michael Sheen will return for a final, feature length episode of Good Omens.

Update: The final, 90 minute episode of Good Omens has now begun filming in Scotland. It involves everyone who’s not Neil Gaiman in wrapping the series up.

Gaiman, last week, faced extensive, detailed, further allegations of sexual assault. He has denied the detailed allegations. He is no longer involved in Good Omens.

Original story from October 2024…

The television adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s fantasy series Good Omens has been hugely successful over the last few years, not least due to the chemistry and charisma of leading duo David Tennant and Michael Sheen. The second series, which debuted in August 2023, was reported to be the number one show on Amazon Prime worldwide, and the first season was hardly struggling for acclaim, either.

The show had been commissioned for a third series before...

'Grand Tour' Review: A Jarring Attempt to Combine Fiction and History
Image
Life often imitates art, and art is often inspired by life, and finding a balance between the two is one of the great challenges of any great filmmaker. This is true regardless of a feature film's format or genre, be it a fictional narrative or a non-fictional documentation. In the case of Grand Tour, Portugal's official submission for the 2025 Academy Awards, it attempts to combine both. It's a very similar vein that Chloé Zhao and Frances McDormand's Best Picture-winning hit Nomadland tapped into, but Grand Tour takes a far more experimental approach.

Coen Brothers' 'Fargo' Streaming for Free on Tubi
Image
The Coen Brothers have established themselves as the brotherly duo behind some of the best deadpan comedy thrillers of all-time, and one of their best is now streaming for free. The pair began their directorial career in 1984 with Blood Simple, starring John Getz and Frances McDormand. They followed that up with an incredible run of movies, including Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, and The Hudsucker Proxy. But, in 1996, they released what many claim to be their pièce de résistance, Fargo.

Fans of the Coen Brothers, and new viewers can now stream Fargo absolutely free on Tubi. Like many of their movies, Joel and Ethan Coen wrote and directed Fargo, while assembling an all-star cast for the film. The movie re-united them with McDormand (who is also Joel's wife), while adding in William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, and Peter Stormare, all in break-out roles.

When Brad Pitt Turned Down This Role In Almost Famous Over Creative Differences: “There Just Wasn’t Enough”
Image
Why Did Brad Pitt Turn Down A Key Role In Almost Famous? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

What if Brad Pitt had played Russell Hammond in Almost Famous? It sounds like a missed opportunity! Well, he almost did until creative differences happened. In an interview (via Fox News), director Cameron Crowe spilled tea about the very moment, which could’ve changed the film entirely.

At the start, the Almost Famous cast lineup looked extremely different. Per Crowe, there were talks of Meryl Streep as the mom, Elaine Miller, and Natalie Portman as the iconic Penny Lane, the free-spirited “band-aid,” the role that ultimately went to Kate Hudson. However, it was Pitt who was initially tapped for the role of Russell Hammond, the lead guitarist of the fictional band Stillwater.

“He was the first choice, just the first choice,” casting director Gail Levin said of Brad Pitt. Crowe had a strong connection with...

How Demi Moore’s Awards Run for ‘The Substance’ Could Redefine Horror at the Oscars
Image
After watching the scene in “The Substance” where Elisabeth Sparkle, played by Demi Moore, repeatedly applies and wipes off lipstick in front of a mirror — a chilling metaphor for identity, erasure and self-loathing — I couldn’t have imagined that critics and awards voters would embrace it. Yet here we are, with Moore emerging as a frontrunner in the Oscar race for her career-defining performance in Coralie Fargeat’s provocative body horror film. Her Golden Globes win Sunday not only cements Moore’s legacy but also shines a long-overdue spotlight on horror as a genre worthy of awards season acclaim.

At 62, Moore is on the verge of earning her first-ever Oscar nomination for best actress. Her haunting and multilayered portrayal of an aging star who takes a mysterious serum to regain her youth — only for the experiment to spiral into a surreal nightmare — has been hailed as a masterclass in physical and emotional transformation.

Pugh had her breakthrough in 2016’s period drama Lady Macbeth.
