Skincare Guru Ole Henriksen to Get Biopic Treatment in Collaboration With Niels Juul, Scribe James Wyllie
Image
The wild, hydrated life of skincare guru to the stars Ole Henriksen is being prepped for the big screen.

The 74-year-old is the subject of a new biopic project mounted by frequent Martin Scorsese collaborator Niels Juul through his No Fat Ego along with author-turned-screenwriter James Wyllie. The news was announced during the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday morning at a press event aboard the Lady Jersey yacht docked on the Albert Edouard jetée in the city’s old port. Henriksen took a seat on a sofa on the yacht’s upper deck where he participated in a panel discussion about the vision for the project alongside his creative collaborators.

“It’s been two years in the making,” Juul told The Hollywood Reporter of the project which is in the early stages and does not have a director or talent attached but does have a finished screenplay from Wyllie reportedly titled The Glowing Man.

Crime Novelist Don Winslow Unretires For ‘The Final Score’
Image
Exclusive: Author Don Winslow might not be the retiring type, after all.

The prolific bestselling crime novelist “paused” his retirement to write a new collection of short novels titled The Final Score. The deal was made quietly a few months ago, and it is now up for pre-orders on Amazon, Apple and Barnes & Noble. Harper Collins/William Morrow will release the book on September 16.

“I don’t know if I am back for one more book or more,” Winslow told Deadline. “One day I just started writing again and I couldn’t stop. I wrote all of these stories in secret and for the first time in decades without a deadline. It felt good and I feel that two of these stories, Collision and The Final Score, are among the best work I’ve ever done.” Those will be the ones shopped for film and TV deals.

Peter Bart: Having Survived Decades Of Enemy Attacks, ‘60 Minutes’ Must Now Defy A New Phalanx Of Powerful Legal & Political Foes
Image
Don Hewitt, the brilliantly contentious founder of 60 Minutes, saw to it that the most impactful characters in key segments turned out to be the “heavies.” Hewitt wanted his audience to understand the threat posed by “bad guys” — hence an ambush interview or some other dramatic confrontation.

During his 37-year reign, Hewitt never would have imagined the list of alleged “bad guys” presently casting a shadow over his show. They include the principal stockholder of CBS, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission and a major sector of the legal establishment. Welcome to the Trump media universe, Don.

Last weekend 60 Minutes sent a defiant signal to the prospective “heavies,” who include Shari Redstone and FCC chairman Brendan Cox as well as The President. The nation’s highest rated TV news show announced it would not back off its coverage nor support financial appeasement of its adversaries. The show’s boss, Bill Owens,...

Rediscovering ‘Public Enemies’: The Christian Bale-Michael Mann Partnership You Might Have Missed
Christian Bale at an event for The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Image Source: Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Christian Bale has worked with some truly amazing directors during his impressive career. As a young boy, he got his big break with Steven Spielberg in Empire of the Sun. Years later, he teamed up with Christopher Nolan to create the unforgettable Batman in The Dark Knight movies and delivered a haunting performance in The Prestige. And who could forget the collaboration with Michael Mann? Bale has a unique gift for finding directors who are able to tap into his greatness, and help him disappear into his characters, throughout the course of his career in Hollywood. Most people think of his collaborations with Spielberg and Nolan; they don’t remember how Bale has worked with Mann, the director of the taut thrillers Heat and The Insider, and the man responsible for bringing Hannibal Lecter to the big screen in Manhunter. This powerful collaboration happened...

“Tom Cruise is overrated”: The Tom Cruise Can Not Act Debate Is Ridiculous and These 3 Movies Should Change Critics’ Minds
Image
Okay, haters, let’s get one thing straight—Tom Cruise is Not overrated, he’s just operating on a different cinematic frequency. Despite the TikTok hot takes and Reddit threads, this man has been serving iconic roles, killer stunts, and pure movie magic since the ‘80s. And whether you agree or not, M&a consultant, former business editor, and cinephile Fabien Buzzanca stood up for the legend himself.

While some folks are still fixated on Tom Cruise’s gossip and his Scientology phase, real ones like Fabien Buzzanca, know he’s the Goat. And it’s not because he can hang off planes at 60 or do ridiculous stunts all by himself. No, Cruise is way more than that, and we’ve three critically acclaimed films to prove our point. So let’s settle this once and for all.

‘Poker Face’ Season 2 Review: Natasha Lyonne Keeps Murder Fun in Peacock Series’ Return
Image
Late in Season 2 of Peacock’s “Poker Face,” Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) remarks, “Everywhere I go, I get sucked into other people’s bullsh—t.” It’s stated in a moment of frustration, as if she’s a thief reluctantly pulled back in for one last score, but it’s also a neat bit of meta-commentary on the series’ episodic nature. Despite everything telling her otherwise, Charlie can’t help but get involved. While it might be annoying for her, it remains deeply entertaining for the audience.

Created by Rian Johnson of “Knives Out,” “Looper” and “The Last Jedi” fame, “Poker Face” returns for its sophomore season just as self-assured as it was the first time around. Once again playing with the idea of the “open mystery” format — i.e., audiences see the culprit behind a murder in the opening acts before then cutting back to see how Charlie ultimately...

Check out the best heist movies streaming right now
Image
From slick Vegas heists to messy break-ins, these movies prove crime can pay — at least on screen.

There are few things as bad ass — or as flat-out fun — as a well-executed heist movie. You want to be that cool, that calculated, and that smart, even if it’s just for a couple of hours. Watching the plan come together is half the thrill. Watching it all fall apart? Somehow even better. A great heist movie gives you both… the rush of seeing everything click into place, and the chaos when it inevitably goes off the rails. So if you’re in the mood for some big risks, big rewards, and even bigger betrayals, here are my top seven heist movies you can stream right now, ranked.

Top 7 heist movies on streaming right now.

The Best Films Playing in New York and Los Angeles Repertory Theaters in May 2025
Image
April showers bring May flowers, but May is bringing a whole bouquet of cinematic gems to transition from spring into summer. Perhaps the most timely of all the options listed below is Michael Mann’s biting takedown of American corporatization and its effect on mass media, “The Insider.” Nominated for Best Picture at the 2000 Academy Awards, the film follows “60 Minutes” producer Lowell Bergman (Al Pacino) as he works to cultivate and protect a tobacco company whistleblower (Russell Crowe) who may be carrying the most vital public health story of the 20th century.

Unfortunately, when the legal team behind “60 Minutes” parent company CBS catch wind of the story — amidst a key merger with Westinghouse Electric no less — they do everything they can to keep the news piece from running lest it upend a possible deal. For those paying attention to current affairs, the narrative will have echoes to a...

Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera
Image
Gerard Butler is one of those actors who exists in a category all of his own: a subgenre unto himself. 2018’s Den Of Thieves was among the better of Butler’s prolific recent output, the film that introduced the world to the classically Butlerian role of ‘Big Nick’ O’Brien: a grizzled detective in the Los Angeles Major Crimes Unit with a shit-eating grin, a disastrous home life, a chain-smoking cigarette habit, and a distaste for playing things by the book.

The first film established a kind of trashy, brashy take on Michael Mann’s Heat: a two-sides-of-the-same-coin cops-and-robbers relationship between Butler’s Big Nick and Pablo Schreiber's bank robber Ray Merrimen. That frenemy dynamic returns, this time between Big Nick and O’Shea Jackson Jr's heist mastermind Donnie.

Look, nobody’s saying they’re De Niro and Pacino, but the dynamic between Big Nick and Donnie gets more interesting in this sequel,...

Joseph Kosinski - Santa Monica, CA 2022
Miami Vice | New film to be directed by Top Gun Maverick’s Joseph Kosinski
Joseph Kosinski - Santa Monica, CA 2022
Top Gun Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is moving from F1 to Miami Vice, as he signs up for the new movie.

If Tom Cruise really did “save Hollywood’s ass” – as Steven Spielberg is reputed to have told Tom Cruise in the wake of Top Gun: Maverick's incredible success in 2022 – then the film’s director Joseph Kosinski must also share in some of the acclaim for keeping the lights on.

The town has certainly been quick to reward Kosinski, too. Lots of studios have been keen to partner with the filmmaker on the two projects that he’s announced thus far: a Formula 1 racing movie coming this summer starring Brad Pitt (called F1) and an untitled UFO movie that will follow next.

Kosinski ultimately chose to partner with Apple on both movies, but a report from Daniel Richtman (via Dark Horizons) claims that he has set up a...

How Heat's Legendary Diner Scene Came Together, According To Director Michael Mann Himself
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Michael Mann's classic crime thriller "Heat," which famously saw legendary actors Al Pacino and Robert De Niro appear in the same scene together for the first time despite having previously co-starred in "The Godfather Part II." The "Heat" diner scene, in which Pacino's world-weary cop, Vincent Hanna, sits down across from De Niro's stoic thief, Neil McCauley, has been an obsession for a certain type of cinephile for years, and has been the subject of homages from across the film and TV spectrum, including most recently in "Daredevil: Born Again." Before the closing night screening of "Heat" at the 2025 TCM Classic Film Festival, Pacino and writer/director Michael Mann participated in a Q&a where they spoke about that moment and how it felt on set at the time.

Pacino spoke...

'Top Gun: Maverick's Joseph Kosinski Directing 'Miami Vice' From Dan Gilroy
Image
Anthony Yerkovich and Michael Mann's original Miami Vice series has stood the test of time, with its unique spin on the police procedural making it worth rewatching 35 years later. The story of Miami Vice was also so engrossing to its producer, Michael Mann, that he directed a feature film adaptation of the series in 2006, starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Unfortunately, it received poor critical and audience reception. Now, another iteration is in the works, as Universal Pictures has recruited a new director and writer to help bring this new version of Miami Vice to life.

A new report from Deadline reveals that Director Joseph Kosinski will helm the new Miami Vice film and that Dan Gilroy will write the script for the upcoming movie. Moreover, Dylan Clark will be producing the movie alongside Kosinski. Overall, it's an impressive group of talent. Kosinski is best known for directing the...

Top Gun: Maverick Director to Reboot 41-Year-Old Hit Cop Show for the Big Screen
Image
Filmmaker Joseph Kosinski's next big project has been revealed. After the immense success of Top Gun: Maverick, he's now going back to the past to bring back another franchise that was born in the 1980s.

Per Collider, Kosinski has been tapped by Universal Pictures to direct a new feature film based on Miami Vice. The new film will be written by Dan Gilroy, while Kosinski will also serve as a producer alongside Dylan Clark. Miami Vice is now expected to be Kosinski's next film following the June release of F1, the high-octane racing movie starring Brad Pitt. However, a release date hasn't yet been set for the film, and it remains unclear when filming might start. Because the project is early into production, no cast members are yet attached.

Kosinski may be best known for helming Top Gun: Maverick, which earned over $1 billion at the box office upon release in 2022 amid universal praise.

Joseph Kosinski to Direct ‘Miami Vice’ Reboot
Image
Joseph Kosinski is giving another iconic ’80s IP a contemporary twist. After helming “Top Gun: Maverick,” Kosinski will now be directing the “Miami Vice” reboot film, as THR reported. IndieWire has reached out to reps for Kosinski and Universal to confirm.

Kosinski, who also has “F1” at Apple, will collaborate with screenwriter Dan Gilroy for the feature. Kosinski’s version will be produced by Dylan Clark (“The Batman”).

“Miami Vice” was first an NBC TV series starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as two undercover Miami police officers. Michael Mann, who served as a producer on the series, later brought the concept to the big screen in 2006 with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell in the Universal Pictures film.

Kosinski recently told Deadline that his Formula 1 film “F1” is technically a sibling feature to “Top Gun: Maverick” with the stunts and camera work. “It’s the next generation from what we did on ‘Top Gun,...

Top Gun: Maverick Director Joseph Kosinski Is Making A New Miami Vice Movie
Image
If you're looking for a filmmaker to take a zeitgeist-y, high-octane, beloved slice of 80s pop culture and turn it into 21st century blockbuster gold, you could do far worse than hire the director who gave us Top Gun: Maverick. Which is why it makes perfect sense then that for their upcoming big screen retooling of synthed-out, super-stylised 80s NBC cop show Miami Vice, Universal Pictures have done precisely that. Yes, as reported by Deadline, none other than Joseph Kosinski is set to helm the studio's new Miami Vice movie, the first since Michael Mann's 2006 effort starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.

Penned by Nightcrawler writer-director — and brother of Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy — Dan Gilroy, apparently this take on Miami Vice, which at its core is about two sharply dressed undercover detectives busting drug dealers on the Miami strip while listening to bona fide era appropriate bangers, has been in the offing for sometime.

Jodie Foster, Mel Gibson, and James Garner in Maverick (1994)
Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is set to direct a Miami Vice remake for Universal Pictures. Nightcrawler scribe Dan Gilroy will write the script for the big screen project, an adaptation of the classic ’80s TV series starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover cops. Bring on the pastels!

Kosinski will also produce the project through Monolith, and Dylan Clark will also produce through Dylan Clark Productions. This won’t be the first time Crockett and Tubbs have made their way to the big screen. Michael Mann directed a remake in 2006, which starred Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Although the film received mixed reviews at the time, not to mention a lackluster box office, it has since become a cult favourite.

“Top Gun: Maverick” filmmaker Joseph Kosinski is set to direct a “Miami Vice” remake for Universal Pictures.

Dan Gilroy is adapting the screenplay. Though plot details haven’t been revealed, the movie is based the 1980s TV series, starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover detectives in South Florida. The neon-hued show ran on NBC for five seasons from 1984-1989. A film version was first attempted in 2006, with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell leading the cast and Michael Mann (who produced the original series) behind the camera. Though it became a cult favorite over time, the “Miami Vice” movie flopped in its theatrical run, grossing $165 million against a reported $135 million budget.

Casting has yet to be announced. In addition to directing, Kosinski will produce through his company, Monolith. Dylan Clark, who worked with Kosinski on 2016’s post-apocalyptic action thriller “Oblivion” as well as the Matt Reeves-directed “Planet of the Apes” series,...

Dylan Clark will produce through Dylan Clark Productions. Kosinski will produce through Monolith.

‘Miami Vice’ Redo Revs With ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Helmer Joseph Kosinski, Dan Gilroy Rewriting Eric Warren Singer Script
Image
Universal Pictures has set Joseph Kosinski to direct Miami Vice, a drama based on the iconic ’80s NBC series about undercover cops taking down drug dealers. Dan Gilroy is rewriting a first draft script by Eric Warren Singer. No cast yet. Dylan Clark is producing along with Kosinski.

They’ve been percolating this one for a bit, and Kosinski has one of the summer buzz titles in the Brad Pitt-starring Formula One movie F1 made by Apple and headed for theaters through Warner Bros. He’s expected next to reteam with F1 producer Jerry Bruckheimer for an untitled UFO project at Apple, and this will come after. Kosinski and Bruckheimer also teamed on Top Gun: Maverick.

Hatched by NBC topper Brandon Tartikoff, who sent a note essentially asking for a cop drama with the flash of MTV that was so popular at the time, the series was created by Anthony Yerkovich.

Joseph Kosinski is headed to Miami. The filmmaker behind the $1.49 billion hit Top Gun: Maverick is attached to direct a Miami Vice movie for Universal, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

The Batman producer Dylan Clark is producing through Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski producing through Monolith.

Miami Vice began life as the Anthony Yerkovich-created TV series starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as two undercover Miami police officers known for their love of pastel suits. Sylvester Stallone Almost Made One Of The Worst Crime Thriller Sequels Ever
Image
After the success of "The Godfather" in 1972 and the even larger success of "The Godfather Part II" in 1974, writer/director Francis Ford Coppola was done with the series. He felt that the stories of Vito Corleone and his son Michael (Al Pacino) had been told. Coppola told a complex Shakespearean drama about a man's loyalty to his mob-leading family, and how that seemingly honorable quality undercut his desire to live a normal life. Michael was granted power in the mob as a result, and as he rose through the ranks, he lost his soul. In his more lucid moments, he was at peace with that.

Coppola was finished, but Paramount wanted to keep going, knowing that the "Godfather" movies weren't just prestige pictures, but major blockbusters. In that way that studios have, Paramount wanted to put a stool down next to "The Godfather" and milk it for all it was worth.

The 7 Best New Movies Streaming on Netflix Right Now
Image
Netflix‘s April film acquisitions include masterpieces from some of the most revered Hollywood directors of the past 50 years, including Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese and Michael Mann. Whether you are in the mood for Nolan’s best superhero film or Mann’s greatest crime thriller, Netflix has whatever its subscribers may be looking for in April. That is to say nothing, either, of the pair of timeless sports dramas that the streaming service also added to its platform this month.

Here are TheWrap’s picks for the seven best movies that have started streaming on Netflix in April.

“The Dark Knight” (Warner Bros. Pictures) “The Dark Knight” (2008)

Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” is still considered by many to be the peak of the superhero genre, and for good reason. Nolan’s 2008 sequel to 2005’s “Batman Begins” is a propulsive, gripping crime thriller that doubles as a battle of wills...

TCM Classic Film Festival To Open With George Lucas And ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ & More Popular Blockbusters Than Ever From ‘Jaws’ To ‘Back To The Future’ To ‘Superman’
Image
The 16th annual TCM Classic Film Festival gets underway Thursday night in Hollywood with a 45th anniversary screening at the Chinese Imax Theatre of the acclaimed second Star Wars feature, 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, with creator George Lucas on stage to talk about it. It certainly fits in with this year’s theme, “Grand Illusions: Fantastic Worlds on Film,” though it is hard to wrap my head around the fact that this movie is now old enough to fit snugly in with so many of the classic titles TCM regularly features on their channel and at this festival, which brings them back in all their glory to the big screen.

The heavy programming of more contemporary box office hits this year does provide some irony to the title of one of the festival’s panels happening Sunday, “They Don’t Make ‘Em Like They Used To,” featuring among others Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman.

Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas in Miami Vice (1984)
Miami Vice (2006) Revisited: Michael Mann’s Hypnotic Crime Masterpiece
Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas in Miami Vice (1984)
I had the pleasure of rewatching Miami Vice the other day and was reminded of what a great experience this film is. I wondered if I’d still enjoy it after years away, but within the first five minutes, I caught myself thinking, “Oh right, this is a classic.” One thing I love about this movie is that it throws you right into the action. It doesn’t hold your hand—you’re expected to let go of any preconceived notions and just ride the wave. You hear a few seconds of music, and suddenly you’re inside a seedy Miami nightclub, right as things are about to get intense. The two protagonists, played by Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, carry themselves with a cool, subdued demeanor that feels authentic rather than over the top.

Miami Vice was released in 2006 to a lackluster response, but its appreciation has steadily grown over the years.

Wtf Happened to Jason Statham?
Image
When you think of Jason Statham, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? If it’s a fit bald dude beating the shit out of a nameless goon, good. That means we’re on the same page. Range is not Jason Statham’s forte, nor would we expect his characters to be able to spell “forte”. But the man has marked himself as maybe The action star in modern movies. And that’s good enough for us and his millions of fans. As Frank Martin said in The Transporter: Never change the deal.

Jason Statham was born on July 26th, 1967 in Shirebrook, England. A natural and gifted athlete, Statham was competing in everything from football to diving (he would later be inducted into the International Sports Hall of Fame). Then came modelling because, well, look at that jawline!

But it was the screen he was destined for.

Night Call review – locksmith opens the wrong door in impressively twisty crime caper
Michael Mann
An inventive debut by Michiel Blanchart, this tightly wound thriller owes a debt to Michael Mann’s Collateral, but has a confidence all of its own

Picturesque, bureaucracy-dominated Brussels is probably not on the top of many lists of cities likely to serve as a setting for an exciting crime film. But this Francophone drama just goes to prove that, given enough moody lamplit street scenes, well-designed stunts and chase sequences and a bit of imagination, any city will work. It’s even more impressive a feat in that it is co-writer-director Michiel Blanchart’s first feature, and yet it feels confident, inventive and as grippy as duct tape throughout.

The protagonist is Mady Bala, a young, independent locksmith who stays up all night on call in case he’s summoned to help a customer break into their own home. In order to ensure he’s not being used to commit a crime,...

Channing Tatum movies: 17 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Channing Tatum, a natural athlete who found that college was not to his liking, moved to Tampa in his teens to work construction and found an outside gig as a male stripper at night. To Tatum's credit, he never denied his stripping gig but instead turned it into artistic gold (years after he became an actor) with a hit franchise you may have heard about: "Magic Mike" (2012), "Magic Mike Xxl" (2015) and "Magic Mike's Last Dance" (2023).

After being discovered by a talent scout, Tatum started his career with small movie parts until he snagged the lead in "Step Up," (2006), a successful dance/romance mash-up. Tatum's looks and athleticism, as well as his dancing and acting skills attracted casting directors, who began to place him in bigger and bigger films.

With Tatum's skills, that led to films with better and better directors, a list that any actor would envy -- Michael Mann...

Michael Mann Would’ve Hated if Will Smith Had Given Him a Sylvester Stallone Like Boxing From Rocky
Image
Michael Mann may have fumbled a bit with Ferrari, but he has killed it with biopics and real-life stories before. The Heat filmmaker explored Jeffrey Wigand’s life after exposing the tobacco industry with The Insider and chronicled the life of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali in the Will Smith-starrer Ali. The film got Smith his first Oscar nomination.

Smith reportedly trained and studied Muhammad Ali for a year before filming, as Michael Mann hoped to make the film as accurate as possible. This reportedly even reached a point where Smith took some real punches to bring in that authenticity, and he was trained by his fight and physical trainer to make sure he avoided ‘Hollywood boxing’ in the movie.

Sorry Sylvester Stallone, But Will Smith is the Best Boxer in Hollywood After What Muhammad Ali Said About Him
Image
Before the Oscar controversy and the headlines surrounding his personal life soured his public image, Will Smith had long established himself as one of Hollywood’s most versatile and bankable stars. From his early days as a rapper to becoming a household name on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Smith’s career has spanned decades and genres, with jaw-dropping range.

In 2001, he took on one of his most challenging roles in his entire career, and that was portraying boxing legend Muhammad Ali in Michael Mann’s critically acclaimed biopic Ali. The real Muhammad Ali himself was moved by Smith’s portrayal.

So, with all due respect to Sylvester Stallone and his iconic Rocky legacy, it might be time to pass the title. After all, if Muhammad Ali gave his nod of approval, Will Smith may just be the best boxer Hollywood has ever seen, on screen, at least.

This is...

Top Gun Director Joseph Kosinski Reportedly Set to Rev Up Miami Vice Reboot
Image
Exciting news for fans of action and style: Joseph Kosinski, the director of Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy, is reportedly in talks to direct a brand-new Miami Vice movie for Universal Pictures. This update was shared by trusted insider Daniel Richtman on his Patreon page.

The movie is still in early talks, but it already has some big names attached. Along with Kosinski as director, the script will be written by Dan Gilroy. Gilroy is known for his work on Nightcrawler, a dark and intense thriller that received critical acclaim. With Kosinski’s eye for visuals and Gilroy’s strong storytelling, this could be a powerful team-up.

Miami Vice was first a hit TV show in the 1980s. It was known for its cool style, neon colors, fast cars, and unforgettable music. It followed two detectives—Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs—as they took on drug dealers and criminals in the streets of Miami.

Who Plays Sinners' Main Villain Remmick?
Image
The creatures of the night, what music they make -- especially in Ryan Coogler's haunting but hugely entertaining new vampire horror film, "Sinners." The latest from the "Black Panther" director has Michael B. Jordan pulling double-duty as Smoke and Stack, twin brothers returning home to 1930s Mississippi to set up their own club, only to find some nightmarish outsiders trying to get on the guest list. The claret-covered terror leading this choir of monsters, Remmick, is played by Jack O'Connell, a British talent whose name is undoubtedly bigger on one side of the pond than the other ... though that could -- and should -- be changing in the very near future.

At 34, O'Connell has already collaborated with some impressively big names, including George Clooney, Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie, and Ben Mendelsohn. He wouldn't have gotten anywhere, however, without springing to stardom at a young age and delivering some career-defining...

Joan Chen and Youn Yuh-jung on Meeting for the First Time Filming ‘The Wedding Banquet’ and Wanting to Collaborate Again: ‘But We Better Hurry’
Image
Upon the release of Michael Mann’s film “Heat” in 1995, cinephiles rejoiced at watching acting legends Robert De Niro and Al Pacino share the screen together for the first time. One can’t help but get that same feeling when seeing legends Youn Yuh-jung and Joan Chen share the screen as their characters bond over a dinner table in “The Wedding Banquet.”

Youn is the legendary South Korean actor whose first American film, “Minari,” landed her an Academy Award for supporting actress. Chen is the Chinese-American actor and director who achieved superstardom in China before starring in 1987’s “The Last Emperor,” which won nine Academy Awards. Since then, she has maintained a busy career not only in Hollywood, but internationally.

In “The Wedding Banquet,” the two are presented as very different parental figures. Youn is the grandmother of Min (played by newcomer Han Gi-Chan), a gay man in love with...

The Criterion Collection, July 2025: New Hollywood, Film Noirs, 4K Kubrick, and more!
Image
The Criterion Collection has announced their July 2025 slate of titles, delivering Stanley Kubrick, a film noir classic, an underrated New Hollywood gem, and more. Let’s check out what Criterion has in store:

First up is Fritz Lang’s The Big Heat (spine #1269), a scorcher of a noir that offers Glenn Ford and femme fatale Gloria Grahame in some of their finest performances (and don’t forget Lee Marvin!). With stellar black and white cinematography by Charles Lang (no relation), The Big Heat stands out in a decade crowded with some of the greatest film noirs ever. Special features include two new commentaries, an archival audio interview with director Lang (co-conducted by Peter Boganovich) and interviews with filmmakers Michael Mann and Martin Scorsese.

A pleasant addition is 1971’s Carnal Knowledge (spine #1270), one of just three Mike Nichols films featured in the collection. I always considered Carnal Knowledge one of the...

The Criterion Channel’s May Lineup Includes The Ghost Writer, Spike Lee, Kathryn Bigelow, Jia Zhangke & More
Image
We’ve always loved setting trends at The Film Stage and are accordingly chuffed that, nine months after we screened a 35mm print at the Roxy, Roman Polanski’s late-career triumph The Ghost Writer comes to the Criterion Channel in next month’s Coastal Thrillers, a series that does what it says on the tin: The Lady from Shanghai, Key Largo, The Long Goodbye, The Fog, and the other best film of 2010, Scorsese’s Shutter Island. It pairs well with Noir and the Blacklist featuring films by Joseph Losey, Fritz Lang, Jules Dassin, and so on. Retrospectives are held for Terry Southern, Kathryn Bigelow, Jem Cohen, and (just in time for Caught By the Tides) Jia Zhangke, while Spike Lee gets his own Adventures In Moviegoing.

For recent restorations, Antonioni’s Il Grido and Anthony Harvey’s Dutchman appear. Criterion Editions include The Runner, Touchez pas au grisbi, Godzilla vs.

Will Smith Went Home and Cried After Taking the Most Merciless Beating While Training For a Movie But Never Complained
Image
Ever since his debut as an actor, Will Smith has consistently proven himself as an actor capable of taking on any role you throw his way. Even though there have been quite a few misses, Smith’s acting caliber has never diminished, but only grown through these fallouts.

While there have been several roles where he exceeded expectations, one of his earlier works in a biographical film really knocked the ball out of the park. If you haven’t figured it out yet, yes, we are talking about Ali. The film was one of the worst things he had to go through in terms of preparation, but being the man he is, Smith never called it quits.

Despite the public backlash for his slap, one thing that fans can agree without any debate is that Will Smith is a damn good actor when it comes to portraying some amazing roles.

From a funny Agent J in Men in Black to a serious boxer in Ali, Smith has done it all, and to achieve his desired role, the actor has also reportedly sacrificed a lot of things.
