A pedestrian was reportedly seriously injured near the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday after strong winds blew down a palm tree.
A section of the walkway along the Croisette, the main boulevard that runs through the seaside resort, was closed as emergency workers cleared debris. The accident occurred near the Mademoiselle Gray Plage Barriere beach, a venue where many parties and events are held during the festival.
A spokesperson for Cannes confirmed that a pedestrian had been injured, but referred other inquiries to City Hall. A spokesperson for City Hall did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
It was not immediately clear what injuries the person had suffered, but according to Screen International, “A man was…seen lying on the ground with blood coming from his head, being attended to by fellow pedestrians, and emergency services were called.”
Another witness told the Afp: “There was a terrible...

As you walk up The Croisette toward the Palais, there’s a long, winding series of tents overlooking the yachts anchored in the Bay of Cannes. Atop each tent is a flag representing the country that hopes to impress the producers, financiers and executives gathering at Cannes on the hunt for locations (and most importantly, financial incentives) for their next projects.
Near the end of these tents is the American Pavilion, which historically has been a place for the world’s biggest exporter of entertainment to meet with international guests, and for individual U.S. states to tout their tax incentives and facilities.
New York had its own dedicated day in the early 2000s, but never before had California made a concerted effort to court the Cannes crowd. After all, Los Angeles has long been the most influential city on earth when it comes to entertainment, an entire town built...

Producer Jason Michael Berman feels he has an advantage with the launch of A/Vantage Pictures.
The former president of Mandalay Pictures has built his career identifying the space where artistry meets impact. Now, with A/Vantage, he’s placing that mission front and center, starting with the Cannes Film Festival premiere of the Spike Lee-directed “Highest 2 Lowest,” starring Denzel Washington.
Launched in April, A/Vantage is committed to culturally resonant, commercially viable films. The name reflects its goals: “A” for authentic, “Vantage” for a unique point of view, and a nod to Berman’s childhood as an Av club kid.
“I’m an Av kid at heart,” he says with a chuckle and smile. “This is about perspective, giving filmmakers the vantage to tell stories that matter, and giving audiences a vantage to see the world differently.”
Berman has long supported visionary storytellers with something personal to say.

Inside Man: Most Wanted didn’t need to exist, but here it is, sitting pretty on Netflix six years later as a surprise hit. It never lived up to the legacy of Spike Lee’s original, and adding Better Call Saul star Rhea Seehorn didn’t exactly fix that. The sequel felt like a straight-to-stream cash grab with none of the original’s brains or tension.
But somehow, folks, it’s found an audience now. Maybe people just can’t resist a good old-fashioned heist, even when it’s wrapped in a forgettable follow-up. It’s chaotic, unnecessary, but weirdly watchable, and that’s probably enough for Netflix.

One rumor is gaining serious traction (and backlash): Denzel Washington is stepping into the role of Magneto. According to recent reports, the legendary actor is confirmed to play a race-swapped version of the iconic X-Men villain. While many fans are hyped to see what Washington brings to the table, not everyone’s on board.
The announcement has sparked waves of racist outrage online, proving once again how deep-rooted bias runs in fandom spaces. As Marvel continues pushing for more inclusive casting, this move could reshape the MCU and challenge some uncomfortable truths along the way.

Back in 2020, it was big news in film circles when Netflix picked up the original script by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Simon Kinberg for Here Comes The Flood in an undisclosed seven-figure deal. Then, the agreement for this not-so-conventional heist movie seems to have fallen into the shadows, with the early possibility that Jason Bateman will direct an iteration that will never occur.
Five years on, and the whole project is back on track, with the directing duties, production team, and principal cast officially announced. Here Comes The Flood, based on Kingberg’s screenplay, will have a strong cast featuring Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Daisy Edgar-Jones in key roles.
Oscar-nominated Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles takes on directing duties, and Samson Mucke is executive producer. The production is yet to start, so no trailers or release date are available.

Denzel Washington's salary for streaming movies has reportedly been revealed. With a career that spans over three decades, Washington is an award-winning, celebrated performer. He has been nominated for ten Academy Awards, winning two, and continues to act in high-caliber projects. His latest undertaking is Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest, which is a modern-day, New York-set reimagining of the Akira Kurosawa film High and Low. The movie is a co-production of Apple TV+ and A24 and is expected to be released on August 22, 2025.
As per Puck, Washington's pay for streaming movies has seemingly been unveiled. The actor is getting a hefty $35 million for Netflix's Here Comes the Flood. Inside Man: Most Wanted, the 2019 sequel to Spike Lee’s classic crime thriller starring Denzel Washington, is now trending around the world on streaming. The direct-to-video movie was released on Netflix to little fanfare six years ago and has been completely overlooked by critics ever since, but has now made its way into the streaming platform’s global top 10. Directed by M. J. Bassett and starring Aml Ameen in the Denzel Washington role as an NYPD hostage negotiator, Inside Man: Most Wanted appears to have benefited from the arrival of its forerunner on Netflix last year.
The streaming giant first dropped Spike Lee’s heist movie Inside Man on its platform in May 2024, and after leaving later in the year, the film returned to Netflix in January 2025. Meanwhile, its sequel has been available to watch on Netflix since December 2019. Inside Man: Most Wanted is set five years after the original movie,...

Illustration by Franz Lang.As an American, I usually avoid spending too much time at a festival considering the films from my own country—Notebook has an international lens, and those films will get more than enough attention from the mainstream American press. But it’s hard to ignore the American titles in this year’s Cannes selection; to look at this year’s competitors—Wes Anderson, Ari Aster, Richard Linklater, and Kelly Reichardt—is to experience cultural dissociation that suggests not only that our cinema is fine and dandy, but that, gee whiz, our country might be too. At festivals, art films are often burdened with representing the state of an entire country; perhaps too readily, they are taken as national allegories. The positive artistic force on display at Cannes, however, belies the reality back home, where misanthropic, self-serving leaders are governing with unfathomable authoritarian cruelty. These films seem...

Jeff (Kiefer Sutherland) obsesses over the fate of his missing girlfriend in George Sluizer’s American remake of his own 1988 Franco-Dutch psychochiller. Is it as devastating as the original? Absolutely not! But Jeff Bridges has never been creepier, and at least the dumb Hollywood ending won’t give you nightmares.

Cannes Film Festival is known for its standing ovations and this year, we’re trying to predict how long they’ll last.
The Cannes Film Festival, perhaps the glitziest, most glamorous film festival of them all, is now in full swing. Celebrities and journalists alike have gathered on the French Riviera for 11 days of movie premieres and press conferences.
In the next few days, the internet will be full of reviews for the new films by Richard Linklater, Wes Anderson, Lynne Ramsay and even Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (here’s one!). We’re also going to be getting daily updates on the lengths of the standing ovations each film gets, a scoring methodology that’s Cannes’ own version of a Rotten Tomatoes score.
Most films presented at the festival will get a standing ovation and (some) headlines love to highlight the specific minutes the audience stayed standing up and clapping.

Netflix is preparing to develop a new heist film, and it's one that has three major Hollywood stars attached. The studio has announced that Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Daisy Edgar-Jonesare set to star in the upcoming film Here Comes the Flood, a crime thriller that will be directed by Fernando Meirelles. Details of the plot are largely unknown, but the film sounds like it's shaping up to be a large venture.
Specifics remain in the dark on where exactly this project will take us. However, the film will be an "unconventional heist movie about a bank guard, a teller and a master thief in a deadly game of cons and double crosses," according to a logline from Netflix. It is unclear who of the trio will be playing which role. However, it sounds like this is the type of Ocean's-brand heist film that has seen a resurgence in recent years.

Kinberg’s script dates as far back as 2020, when Netflix first won the spec script from Kinberg and later when Jason Bateman was in talks to direct the film. Now though, Pattinson has just closed his deal to star.

Meirelles is also producing the feature with Oscar nominee Kinberg and Audrey Chon, the latter two via their Genre Films banner.
Netflix picked up the original screenplay in 2020, making a splashy seven-figure deal to win a heated spec script auction. It was a markedly different era, with the streaming wars in full swing and the streamer’s film unit being run by Scott Stuber, who always had Netflix’s wallet open. Still, the project survived (at one point Jason Bateman was in talks to direct an iteration but a deal never took), and now five years later has attracted top-shelf talent.
Logline details are being kept in the dark, but Flood is being described as an unconventional heist movie about a bank guard,...

Hollywood has been betting on sequels for decades as they are almost always guaranteed hits, especially after the huge success of a first installment. However, the recipe doesn't always work.
In 2006, two-time Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington starred in Spike Lee's successful, star-studded movie Inside Man. It was a critical and commercial hit, and over a decade later, Inside Out: Most Wanted was released. Although the sequel didn't make a splash, it achieved success on Netflix, debuting in second place in the global streaming charts, per Tudum.
Although this is not Inside Man: Most Wanted's first stint on Netflix, the movie was back in the charts for the week between May 5 and 11. It amassed 12.3 million views and 21.8 million hours viewed, debuting in second place just behind Vince Vaughn's new feel-good comedy Nonnas. The heist film entered the Top 10 in 69 countries, and became the number one film in 21 territories across the globe.

Who out there hasn't stood in line at the bank, looked around at the layout and the guards and the security cameras, and wondered: How could I rob this place and get away with it? I bet some of you have even figured out what kind of masks your crew would wear. It's a fun game to play and maybe that's why we all love a good heist flick. They give us the vicarious thrill of taking part in a masterplan for a few hours and be part of the gang while wondering how exactly they're going to pull it off.

The NBA has always been part of Hollywood. Not that they run it or anything, but it might as well be their favorite game. Over the years, basketball has embedded itself in many places, gaining a huge fan following and becoming a key actor in the world of entertainment. At this time and age, it’s not just about respect and scores but also about the spotlight and showboating, something Hollywood loves.
Whether it’s appearing in movie plots, celebrity interviews, or red carpet conversations, the NBA has found a permanent place in the heart of Hollywood. Many Hollywood actors are die-hard NBA fans. You can see some of them courtside more than some season ticket holders, and reacting to buzzer-beaters like their lives depend on it.
Some of these actors’ obsessions have even come on screen, writing, producing, or starring in basketball-related movies that genuinely show their love for the sport.

All eyes were on Halle Berry as the Cannes Film Festival kicked off on Tuesday with its jury press conference, where the Oscar winner was questioned on everything from Cannes’ new dress code to if she would ever go back to the James Bond universe.
When asked by Variety if she would be open to revisiting a spinoff involving her character Jinx — or if she would take on the role of the famous spy herself — Berry said: “I don’t know if 007 should be a woman.” On the spinoff, she added that “there was a time that that could have happened. Probably should have happened. I would have loved for that to happen.”
Elsewhere during the jusry press conference — which also included president Juliette Binoche and “Succession” star Jeremy Strong — Berry was quizzed on the news of a stricter dress code banning nudity and “voluminous outfits.” In fact, Berry revealed...

As previously announced, this year’s main competition jury president will be Juliette Binoche, who will oversee the choosing of the Palme d’Or and other festival awards alongside a jury yet to be announced. When I wrote my inaugural Critic’s Take some seven Cannes ago, it made sense to explore the apparent chasm between the films celebrated at cinema’s high temple — where austere and unsparing fare could feed the zeitgeist — and those that made inroads within the American industry, where hard auteurism had a tougher time cracking the mainstream, Palme d’Or or not.
Suffice it to say, I didn’t have a similar impetus this time around. How could I? Not when Cannes rides high on recent awards glories as festival honcho Thierry Frémaux relishes his kingmaker status; not when so many international distinctions have collapsed; and not when the very nature of a Palme d’Or has so strikingly shifted in the intervening decade.
Indeed, the cascading effects of streaming wars, labor unrest and widespread social shifts have fundamentally altered film culture. Since that first column, the theatrical market has continued to contract,...

‘South of Midnight’ Writer Zaire Lanier On Creating A Relatable Human Story Through Black Girl Magic

Compulsion Games’ mythical adventure game, South of Midnight, is a one-of-a-kind tale. Drenched in folklore and unique stop-motion graphics to bring the dark tales and heroic stories of the Southern Gothic to life, the Xbox Game Studios property is a serious contender for 2025 Game of the Year, especially considering that in just under a month of its release, the game has already amassed 1 million players.
The story follows a young woman named Hazel, reeling after a hurricane devastated her hometown as she journeys through the highest peaks and the bayou to find her mother, who went missing during the flood. Pulled into a magical reality where folklore creatures emerge, Hazel embraces her powers as a Weaver—a magical mender of broken spirits—to confront formidable creatures called Haints as she unravels the secrets of her family and those around her.

It also means that the American Pavilion (AmPav) is rolling out a predictably robust lineup of educational programming aimed at providing an inside look at the film industry to students and seasoned veterans alike.
Taking place at the Roger Ebert Conference Center from May 14-22, AmPav’s series of conversations and panels will see the likes of Spike Lee, Michael Angelo Covino, and Vicky Krieps sitting down to share their words of wisdom with festival attendees. There will also be specialty programming such as California Day, a series of panels aimed at promoting film production in California; and House Party, a two-day summit aimed at elevating global perspectives in film.

Cannes boss Thierry Fremaux addressed Trump’s proposed tariff of 100% on foreign-produced movies and the resilience of American cinema at his press conference on Monday.
U.S. President Donald Trump threw the film industry into confusion on the eve of the Cannes Film Festival which hosts the world’s biggest market, by proposing a 100% tariff on all movies produced outside of the U.S. Asked to react to this, Fremaux said he’d prefer to hold off on commenting, suggesting that Trump has a habit of changing his mind.
“The American president has, over the last three months, accustomed us to saying one thing and then adding to it, elaborating on it, contradicting it, etc. So, no, I don’t know what to say,” he said.
“The idea that American cinema could be penalized by foreign countries is, I think, an idea that can be discussed, but there is one thing we have noticed,...

At Cannes last year, Jon Voight’s weapon of choice was the crossbow phallus.
In a scene in Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis (a Cannes competition title last year), Voight, playing the deranged capitalist Hamilton Crassus III, pulls back a bed sheet to reveal it conceals not his grotesquely exaggerated manhood, as his wife Wow Platinum (Aubrey Plaza) had expected, but a device even more dangerous and deadly.
Executives heading to Cannes this year are feeling a lot like Plaza. They are tempted to mock Voight, with his Trump-backed plan to Make Hollywood Great Again, while still fearing the damage the “special ambassador” could do to the international film industry.
Voight’s plan, a confusing stick-and-carrot combination of taxes and tariffs on “foreign-made films” and new but vague promises of domestic production incentives, has rattled the film world. It will be the talk of the Croisette.

Oscar season is ready to start.
The 2025 Cannes Film Festival kicks off on Tuesday with a lineup that includes new movies from Wes Anderson, Ari Aster, Richard Linklater, Spike Lee, Lynne Ramsay, and more of the world’s top auteurs.
In many ways, the Cannes Film Festival is more important than ever for the awards race. Over the last five years, multiple movies that premiered on the French Riviera have gone on to receive Best Picture nominations at the Academy Awards, including Oscar winners Parasite and Anora, and nominees Top Gun: Maverick, Triangle of Sadness, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Substance, and Emilia Pérez. With the 2025 lineup loaded with some highly anticipated titles, it would be considered an upset if at least one or two of the following movies failed to secure eventual Oscar bids in the top categories.

Acclaimed Swedish-Egyptian filmmaker Tarik Saleh spotlights the fraught history of the Arab film industry with his latest film, “Eagles of the Republic.” Saleh concludes his Cairo trilogy films with the satirical political thriller, which takes place in Egypt.
Swedish actor Fares Fares plays a fictionalized Egyptian superstar actor who is pressured to star in a government-commissioned film. After he reluctantly accepts the role, he finds himself thrown into the inner circle of power and begins an affair with the mysterious wife of the general overseeing the film. Lyna Khoudri, Cherien Dabis, Zineb Triki, and Sherwan Haji co-star. “Eagles of the Republic” will premiere in competition at Cannes 2025.
Saleh’s Cairo trilogy began with his 2017 Sundance Grand Jury prize winner, “The Nile Hilton Incident.” Saleh was exiled from Egypt prior to shooting his 2017 film, yet he continued to set films in the country while shooting instead in Turkey. “It’s very sad.

In the 24 hours after President Trump declared he would be putting 100 percent tariffs on all films produced in foreign lands, and with little clarity about what that even means, the gut reaction was to declare it a death sentence for independent films looking to get funding from international pre-sales. It seemed like a scary coincidence that the announcement came a week before the industry jetted off to France for Cannes, the biggest global film market of the year.
“It’s not helpful,” one sales agent told IndieWire, adding that anything that creates more uncertainty isn’t a good thing, especially for international folks who are only responding to a headline. The agent said he received a lot of worried calls and emails on Monday.

Ludi Lin, who stars as Liu Kang in the upcoming “Mortal Kombat II,” is making moves behind the camera. The Chinese-Canadian actor has signed on as both lead actor and producer for “The Unlucky,” a new sci-fi chiller from filmmaker Quentin Lee.
The project is being shopped to international buyers at the Cannes Film Market by executive producer Jennifer Price, who previously served as the Los Angeles representative for the Quebec Film and Television Council.
“The Unlucky” draws from Lee’s personal experience as an international student in America. The Canada-certified feature follows a Yale graduate student from overseas who falls for a captivating young woman and accepts her Thanksgiving invitation, only to become entangled in a con that spirals into horror.
“‘The Unlucky’ is a genre twisting sexy thrill ride and I am so excited to be a part of it,” Lin said.

Tom Cruise explained why Mission: Impossible was the first film he boarded as a producer and reflected on his inaugural filmmaking experience in the UK, during a wide-ranging discussion at the BFI Southbank ahead of collecting the organisation’s Fellowship award.

Tom Cruise is in London to receive the honorary BFI Fellowship. On his trip, however, he appears to have made time for a leisurely stroll up one of the city’s most iconic buildings.
On Sunday afternoon, the Mission: Impossible actor was photographed on the roof of the BFI IMAX building in London. It’s unclear how exactly the actor scaled up the roof, but we’ve confirmed with sources close to Cruise that it was indeed him.
From the footage, which you can view below, you can see the BFI IMAX building is currently wrapped in an advertisement for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Paramount Pictures will launch the eighth installment in the franchise in the U.S. on May 23. Before that, Cruise will debut the film in Cannes next week. The movie will play Out of Competition on May 14 with Cruise, director Christopher McQuarrie, and the cast walking the famous red carpet.

Seven films down with an eighth and final edition launching in cinemas this month, Mission: Impossible is undoubtedly one of contemporary cinema’s most enduring franchises.
But back in 1996, what made a young Tom Cruise, red hot in Hollywood thanks to hits like A Few Good Men and Interview with the Vampire, board the spy thriller?
“It was the music,” Cruise joked this evening in London, where he took part in a wide-ranging discussion about his career onstage at the British Film Institute. “I loved the theme music.”

Out of the several successful collaborations between Spike Lee and Denzel Washington, heist thriller Inside Man, released back in 2006, was probably not the best, but it sure was entertaining in the way the narrative blended the heist motif with historical context. The movie was supposed to get the sequel treatment in later years, plans for which fell off with the departure of the original cast and director from the project. However, a continuation still came in the form of Inside Man: Most Wanted, with director M. J. Bassett helming the project and an entirely new cast starring in lead roles. Unlike its predecessor, the sequel lacked any narrative depth as it tried to ape the original entry beat by beat, and a forgettable bunch of characters coupled with a predictable plot leaves a bad aftertaste.
