In January 2020, Adil and Bilall began to ride high. The Belgian directing duo’s American debut, Bad Boys for Life, set a franchise record with $424 million, becoming the highest grossing domestic film of the pandemic-stricken year. That fall, they joined the MCU’s Ms. Marvel and helmed the first two episodes of Kamala Khan’s coming-of-age superhero series. Led by Iman Vellani, the Disney+ show would eventually garner critical acclaim, especially Adil and Bilall’s outings, which added some much-welcomed visual flourishes to Earth-616. Then, in the spring of 2021, the filmmakers extended their hot streak when they signed on to direct the Dceu’s Batgirl for HBO Max. And to top it all off, in May of 2022, their Belgian film, Rebel, premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival to strong reviews.

While Tom Hanks is renowned for his iconic acting skills as one of the best veteran actors in the entire entertainment industry, he is also quite famous for the powerful relationship he shares with his current wife, Rita Wilson.
If anything, their 30+ years of being in love have transformed them into being regarded as one of Hollywood’s most beloved power couples of all time.

But while fans know the duo for what they are today, not many know how it all started. Ironically enough, the beginning of this pair’s legendary friendship before they fell in love has something very close to do with one of Hanks’ best qualities.
In fact, the actor even sported this quality in Forrest Gump and transformed it into one of his most celebrated masterpieces: His storytelling skills!

Tom Hanks was fated to lead Penny Marshall’s comedy feature that made history more than three decades ago. But, as it turns out, two rather exceptional actors reportedly passed down the film that was well on its way to becoming a box-office sensation.

Both Batman star Michael Keaton and Yellowstone actor Kevin Costner were apparently offered to play the ebullient protagonist in the fantasy drama, Big. But thanks to their refusals, Hanks ended up swiping the opportunity from them, starring in the first-ever movie by a female director to reach $100 million at the box office.

In the summer of 1990, screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin became an overnight success with the release of “Ghost,” a romantic thriller that would go on to become the top-grossing film of the year and earn Rubin an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. At least that’s how it seemed from the outside; the truth is that the 47-year-old filmmaker had been kicking around the industry for decades, working as a TV news editor, film museum curator, and writer-for-hire before “Ghost” (and then “Jacob’s Ladder” a few months later) established him as one of the most original voices in Hollywood cinema.
Rubin tells the story of everything that led up to “Ghost” — and everything that came after — in “It’s Only a Movie,” a book that’s half-show business memoir, half spiritual inquiry detailing his lifelong quest for enlightenment. That quest informs Rubin’s best films — “Brainstorm,” “Jacob’s Ladder,” “Ghost,” “My...

The last film Tim Burton directed, 2019's live-action "Dumbo" remake, became something of an accidental metaphor for his career. For its first half, the movie sticks fairly close to Disney's original 1941 animated feature, as the titular elephant with unusually large ears is abused and treated with disdain by the customers at the traveling circus where he resides. When Dumbo's newfound ability to fly makes him the show's star attraction (the point at which the animated film ends), he and his fellow performers are recruited by a greedy and unscrupulous businessman (Michael Keaton) who exploits them at his gaudy amusement park. It's up to Dumbo and his pals to escape the park in search of greener pastures.
It's not a one-to-one analogy, but you can see why, upon reflection, Burton said Disney was a "horrible big circus" and he was its Dumbo. After decades of collaborating, the once visionary filmmaker...

The year was 1989 when Michael Keaton first donned the cape and cowl for Tim Burton’s Batman, Cher wanted to turn back time, and Marty McFly bungled the most sure-fire get-rich-quick scheme in cinematic history in Robert Zemeckis’ Back to the Future Part II.
After the monumental success of Back to the Future, Univeral Studios approached Robert Zemeckis about creating a sequel to his film that had quickly become a pop culture touchstone. Hesitant about capturing lightning in a bottle twice, Zemeckis said he wouldn’t make the film unless Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd returned as Marty McFly and Doc Brown, respectively. Thankfully, both were game to gas up the DeLorean and push the speedometer to 88mph for another excursion through time. With Fox and Lloyd confirmed, Zemeckis arranged his ceremonial objects to summon his writing partner, Bob Gale, to determine where Marty and Doc would travel next.

One of the films that Michael Keaton had done before donning the cape and cowl in Tim Burton’s Batman is the 1986 cultural merging comedy Gung Ho. The movie came from Ron Howard after making a splash with….well, Splash — a Tom Hanks/Daryll Hannah comedy from 1983. Then, Howard went on to direct the hit film Cocoon with Steve Guttenberg in 1985. Cocoon is also a film that we’ve headlined in our column about hard-to-find movies. However, in a strong step for this Ron Howard film, the video label Kino has announced the release of a 4K restoration on Bluray for Gung Ho.
The movie would open at number one at the box office in March of 1986 with a $7 million opening and finish its run with $36 million. Interestingly, a TV series based on the film would actually premiere later that year in December of 1986. That version would star Scott Bakula...

Tim Burton’s rendition of Batman remains perhaps one of the most eccentric yet authentic versions of the Caped Crusader. To the gothic filmmaker, the orphaned superhero didn’t symbolize the heroic savior that comes to Gotham’s rescue, as is the quintessential take of the character.

Perhaps it is this painfully realistic and gritty take on the character that sets Burton’s creation apart from the sundry other Batman films, making it next to impossible to recreate his historic vision.

Warner Bros. released the full trailer for Tim Burton's Beetlejuice sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (oops!), last week, giving us a first glimpse of several new characters, including Willem Dafoe's brilliantly-named Wolf Jackson.
Now, Empire has shared a new image from the movie, providing us with a better look at the "afterlife cop," who is missing a portion of his skull.
When he was alive, Jackson was an actor who was known for playing a police officer by the just as fantastically-named Frank Hardballer, and took on a similar role after his death as head of the Afterlife Crimes Unit.
“The most important thing for me was to find the tone. It had to be rooted but it also had to be free enough that you could play with it. I take my cue off of [Michael Keaton],” says Dafoe. “You take your cue off of the world.”

Michael Keaton has played many iconic characters over the years. While Batman and the Vulture have certainly gotten him a lot of attention, there is no denying that his work in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice was one of the most iconic points in his career. The influence that the character had cannot be put into words, as he was immortalized in the hall of Burton’s most iconic characters.

In recent years, audiences have seen Willem Dafoe do all kinds of things. He’s played ‘God’ in Poor Things, responsible for the creation of all kinds of hybrid creatures. He leapt around and farted in a cave for Robert Eggers’ The Northman. Even Spider-Man: No Way Home had him talking to himself down a back alley in his return as the Green Goblin. “There’s been so much merchandising of it, I had to drop back to where it started,” Keaton told Empire. “I had to go, ‘What was my unusual imagination even thinking about when I was developing it in the first place?’ As opposed to seeing a coffee mug or a golf-club cover [adorned with Betelgeuse’s face].”
The character is no longer just some weird product of his imagination; It is now iconic in the Tim Burton canon — if not the canon of cinema itself.
“The ubiquity of Beetlejuice as a character in the culture created its own challenges. “”That was fucking weird,” Keaton admitted to Empire. “To be honest with you – I’m being very frank – it was off-putting, to look and go, ‘I don’t want to look like all these little things,...

Martin Lawrence has been a recognized face in Hollywood for decades now. He starred in many beloved projects, however, none have been as iconic as the Bad Boys film series. Where many thought that 2020’s Bad Boys for Life would be the end of the series, Lawrence and his co-star, Will Smith, brought about a gift for their fans.

Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice is finally getting a sequel after 36 years of waiting, as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (informally known as Beetlejuice 2) is going to be released later this year in theaters around the world. Michael Keaton is back in the titular role after more than three decades, which is interesting, seeing how he has recently returned to the role of Batman as well. Beetlejuice is one of the movies that made Keaton’s career, and seeing the actor back in the role will certainly create a wave of nostalgia for fans, especially since he is reuniting with Tim Burton once again.
But the experience of returning to the role was somewhat surreal for Keaton himself, who said that he did not like the fact that Beetlejuice became a part of the mainstream and that the character was effectively corrupted and ruined by the merchandising it was exposed to.

Jenna Ortega gained worldwide recognition for her role as Wednesday Addams in the hit Netflix series. Wednesday, executively produced and partially directed by goth legend Tim Burton, acted as a significant career boost for the 21-year-old actress.
For her work in numerous horror projects, Jenna Ortega has been crowned as a prominent “screen queen” in the industry. Despite giving loads of effort to perfectly play Wednesday, Ortega claimed that she would have never gotten the role if two major elements had not appealed to Tim Burton.

Michael Keaton is opening up about the “surreal” process of returning to his beloved character for the upcoming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice sequel.
The actor, who debuted the ghoul Betelgeuse in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice in 1988, recently told Empire magazine that he had to look past the pop culture aspect of his character and find the quirky source ahead of filming.
“There’s been so much merchandising of it, I had to drop back to where it started,” Keaton explained. “I had to go, ‘What was my unusual imagination even thinking about when I was developing it in the first place?’ As opposed to seeing a coffee mug or a golf club cover [featuring Betelgeuse’s face].”

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' hunt for a Spider-Man 4 director continues, with Bad Boys: Ride or Die helmers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah now rumoured to be in the running for the job.
They previously worked with Marvel Studios on Ms. Marvel after directing the premiere and finale of the critically acclaimed Disney+ series. They then made the leap to the Dceu to direct Batgirl, only for the near-completed movie to be scrapped as a tax write-off by Warner Bros. Discovery.
Talking to ComicBook.com, El Arbi and Fallah addressed the Spider-Man 4 rumours head-on.
"It came out of nowhere, because we've got the Sony bosses here, and they didn't tell us anything!" El Arbi joked before Fallah chimed in to say, "I'm a superfan of Spider-Man, so you can imagine, when I was reading that, I was like, 'Whoa - that would be cool.'"

The decade of the 1990s was fruitful for thrillers and mystery stories, including the ones that contain erotic elements too. The main director of this kind was David Lynch, who inscribed his name in history with the Twin Peaks fever sweeping over America.
However, there were other directors who tried to ride this hype train. Such an attempt was made in 1992, when the psychological thriller we’re going to talk about was released, and since then it gained such a cultish status it’s still discussed on Reddit.
Its plot revolves around Allison, a young woman who decides to separate from her fiancé and starts looking for a roommate. Eventually, she finds one, a femme fatale named Hedra, who seems to be incredibly interested in her neighbor's life.
However, when Allison starts thinking of reconciling with her boyfriend, Hedra grows jealous and even aggressive. The more we observe her changed behavior,...

Back in 1988, Beetlejuice became Winona Ryder’s breakout movie. This was before Heathers, before Edward Scissorhands, before Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Little Women, before she became a generational icon. And it’s no wonder she stood out in Tim Burton’s supernatural comedy – her Lydia Deetz was the sullen, sardonic teenage goth girl at its heart, who relates more to the ghosts in the attic than her own living relatives. Now, 35 years later, Lydia is back and all grown up in Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. And, as Ryder tells Empire in our world-exclusive new issue, stepping back into her goth boots has been a real trip.
“I struggle to find the words,” she says of the sequel. “It’s just one of the most special experiences that I’ve ever had. The fact that we’re coming back to it, it’s… It’s beyond.” The...

'I'd had enough': Tim Burton was disillusioned with the film industry before Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Tim Burton had "lost interest" in movies before making 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice'.The 65-year-old director has returned to helm the long-awaited sequel to the 1988 horror comedy 'Beetlejuice' but confessed that he felt disillusioned with the industry prior to the project. In an interview with Empire magazine, Tim said: "I actually had sort of lost interest in the movie industry. I felt like I'd kind of had enough with studios. I'd had enough of all this kind of stuff."Burton explained that a significant appeal of the sequel was the focus on Winona Ryder's character Lydia Deetz rather than Michael Keaton's titular ghost. The 'Edward Scissorhands' filmmaker said: "From that first (film), I really identified with Lydia. It was a character that I understood, that I felt very strongly about."The new film becomes very personal to me, through the Lydia character. What happened to Lydia? You know,...

Beetlejuice is back! Batman director Tim Burton and beloved actor Michael Keaton are reuniting for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to Burton's award-winning Beetlejuice.
Empire Magazine has shared two covers for the sequel, with the first putting the spotlight on the title character alongside stars Winona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, and Catherine O'Hara. The second focuses solely on Beetlejuice and was illustrated by artist Chris Christodoulou.
After an unexpected family tragedy, the movie sees three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened.
With trouble brewing in both realms, it's only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice's name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

Michael Keaton just wanted to get back to the basics of playing ghoul Betelgeuse.
Keaton told Empire that returning for sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” in the title role meant he had to somewhat overlook the zeitgeist iconography from the 1988 original Tim Burton film.

Keaton called witnessing the lore of Betelgeuse in the merchandising world a “fucking weird” experience.
“To be honest with you – I’m being very frank – it was off-putting, to look and go, ‘I don’t want to look like all these little things, fuck that – what was the thing that started this?'” Keaton said.

The DC Extended Universe delivered the odd hit, but for the most part, it's likely to be remembered as a failure. That was evident from most of 2023's offerings and the news of a Dcu reboot from the newly formed DC Studios was welcomed by most fans.
There are lots of reasons to be excited about what's to come, especially with Superman on the horizon. Unlike their predecessors, James Gunn and Peter Safran appear to have a plan and they've already attracted some A-List talent to the overhauled franchise.
That doesn't mean they haven't already made a few mistakes, of course. Even Marvel Studios went through growing pains and, before even a single movie or TV show has launched, we have some concerns about DC Studios' plans for these characters.
We're hoping to be proved wrong, but you can find the Dcu's biggest mistakes by hitting the "Next"/"View List" buttons below.

It’s been five years since Tim Burton’s last movie hit cinemas – his live-action take on Disney’s Dumbo. In the intervening years, the director had moved away from feature films, instead entering the streaming game with his massive Netflix hit series Wednesday, imagining the Addams Family’s daughter solving spooky mysteries at a supernatural high school. But now, Burton is officially back on the big screen with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – a long-awaited sequel to his 1988 classic comedy, reuniting the director with Michael Keaton’s garrulous ghoul and Winona Ryder’s outsider Lydia Deetz. While sequels can be eyed with skepticism from audiences, make no mistake: this is deeply personal territory for cinema’s greatest goth auteur.

In every sense, Beetlejuice is a force of nature. The titular ghoul in Tim Burton’s beloved spooky comedy is a total hellraiser, unleashing supernatural shenanigans on the living and the recently deceased: possession, transmogrification, and absurdist pranks are the name of his game. And in the hands of Michael Keaton, the character became an instant cinematic icon – not only for that distinctive black-and-white get-up and green shock of hair, but the freewheeling ferocity of Keaton’s physical performance. Whenever Beetlejuice is summoned, you never quite know what he’ll do next. Now, over thirty years later, he’s about to conjure up even more chaos.
Yes, Beetlejuice is back in long-awaited sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – with Burton once again directing, and Keaton ready to rip it up all over again. And in Empire’s world-exclusive cover feature, Keaton spoke about the “surreal” experience of finding himself back in the stripes.

In a highly anticipated reveal, the official trailer for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the long-awaited sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 cult classic, has finally premiered. Fans of the original film, which starred Michael Keaton as the mischievous ghost Beetlejuice, have been eagerly waiting for a follow-up for over three decades. The trailer promises a thrilling return to the whimsical and macabre world that made the first movie a beloved classic.
