Some actors are lucky and manage to immediately luck into a perfect role. Jeremy Irons has landed perhaps his most unlikely role to date, voicing the ocean itself in an upcoming feature doc described as a “visionary cinematic odyssey.”
The Oscar-winner will lend his vocals to the upcoming film “Water People: The Story of Us,” which Embankment Films is launching in Cannes.
The film follows six individuals — a navigator, freediver, surfer, shark whisperer and two visionary scientists — each offering a “window into our symbiotic bond with water,” according to the filmmakers. These different lives are anchored and threaded together by Irons.
“Water People: The Story of Us” comes from acclaimed artist Maya de Almeida Araujo.
“I am delighted to be part of this extraordinary and important piece of work,” said Irons, who himself is a supporter efforts to bring awareness to the issue of plastic pollution in oceans, and fronted the 2012 documentary Trashed about the impact of consumerism and pollution.

Jason Statham is a prolific and profitable action star whose films bring millions of dollars at the box office. In 2024, the actor teamed up with Suicide Squad director for The Beekeeper.
The action movie was a critical and commercial success, which led to them reuniting this year for A Working Man. However, considering how profitable The Beekeeper was, a sequel was granted. Now, Deadline reports that The Beekeeper 2 has received a major update as Amazon MGM Studios landed the worldwide distribution rights in a $50 million+ deal.
The move is hardly surprising, as the first entry in the franchise was also distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures through Amazon MGM Studios, with Miramax producing. The same team will produce and distribute the sequel as well, but The Beekeeper comes with a big change: David Ayer won't return to direct.

Oh, for the life of a movie star! To be able to pretend for a living, and in return face the adulation of an adoring public! Except, of course, when one doesn't.
No actor sets out to make a failure, and few seek to be hated, but many over the years have taken on roles that showered them in backlash. Whether it was the role itself that was deemed inappropriate or their particular performance of it, some actors have been associated with roles that risked alienating huge chunks of the public. Some dealt with it better than others: it comes with the territory for veterans but can be devastating for newcomers every so often, though the scorn is deserved.

Jonathan Pryce was humorous, O’Toole capricious, Liv Ullman secretly female and Jude Law memorably Speedo-clad – onscreen pontiffs have come in all forms
Everything about the papacy is cinematic – especially picking a new one, as shown in the wildly popular movie Conclave, with Ralph Fiennes as an unwilling contender for the top job. There is the mystery, the ritual, the vestments; the spectacle of a lone, fragile human being poised over an abyss of history and good and evil; the elevation of one flawed man to a position of supreme authority, an exaltation whose parallel to the crucifixion is sensed but not acknowledged.
Discussing the onscreen representation of the pope in Conclave would risk the blasphemy of spoilerism but there have been many popes on screen, some cheekily fictional, many factual. Many a heavyweight British thesp has turned in a gamey cameo as some hooded-eyed Renaissance pontiff. Peter O’Toole was...

Ed Harris did not come on like a clear-cut leading man 44 years ago when he starred in George A. Romero's awesomely offbeat "Knightriders," but there was something about the balding 32-year-old actor with the piercing, Paul Newman-esque blue eyes that commanded your attention. He could be steely, tender, and a bit of a goof. These qualities continued to be evident in films like "The Right Stuff," "Alamo Bay," and "Sweet Dreams," so he finally got a chance to co-anchor a massive Hollywood production in 1989 with James Cameron's "The Abyss." He aced the assignment (as did his co-star Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), but the film underperformed at the box office (even though it's still the best thing Cameron's ever directed), so he became more of a character actor throughout the 1990s while he personally developed his next leading role.

Let’s be honest. The first thing that comes to mind when you hear that Jason Statham is gonna star in a movie is the fact that the action is gonna be good. And not without reason.
The Meg star has time and again proved his mettle before the world. A Working Man is a testament to his skill set. And director David Ayer believes that it has a lot to do with everything that started in 1998 with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

We are still four months away from pressing play on Jason Momoa's (A Minecraft Movie) passion project — the epic series Chief of War. However, as it teased all of its summer releases, Apple TV+ offered a brief glimpse of the show and its epic scale. The cast also features Luciane Buchanan (The Night Agent) and Tamuera Morrison (Star Wars), and the nine-episode series is set to debut on August 1.
Even though it's not much revealing, the teaser does hint at the scale of the show, and it looks like once again Apple TV+ has spared no expense to make a new title look as good as possible. The first bit shows Momoa among a huge slate of warriors who look like they are about to enter a massive battle. Then, we get a look at the show's impressive costume design and get the notion that Momoa's character Ka'iana is...

Ridley Scott’s made some legendary films, but even the best directors have their regrets. Kingdom of Heaven was supposed to be an epic masterpiece, yet one major decision still haunts him. Decades later, he can’t shake the feeling that he messed up – big time.
The swords clashed, the battles raged, but behind the scenes, Scott’s biggest fight was with himself. He knew he had made the wrong call, and audiences weren’t shy about letting him know.

Man, oh, man. It’s impossible to overstate the monumental loss the filmgoing world suffered with David Lynch’s passing on January 15, 2025. A true artistic visionary and singular voice who made movies unlike anyone before or since, the often imitated, never emulated surrealist filmmaker deserves a special place in the pantheon of all-time greats. Whether Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks, Lost Highway, or Mulholland Drive, few filmmakers plumbed the subconscious and unconscious the way Lynch did, tapping into his own personal psychological state to lend the world a collection of cinematic nightmares that continue to awe, inspire, haunt, and speak to countless fans worldwide.
As we bid a fond farewell to the undisputed master of celluloid dreams and nightmares, it only seems right to take a closer look at Lynch’s tenth and final feature film, Inland Empire, inarguably the most auteur-driven, experimental, and...

Michael Fassbender’s critically panned video game movie has returned to streaming charts thanks to the release of the latest franchise installment, Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Fassbender features alongside Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, and more in Assassin’s Creed, the 2016 adaptation following Callum Lynch, a man who explores the memories of his ancestor, Aguilar de Nerha, to gain the skills of a Master Assassin to take on the Templars. Assassin’s Creed is currently the #2 most popular movie on Max at the time of writing. Although the film earned over $240 million at the global box office, it was maligned by both critics and audiences upon release, earning scores of 19% from the former and 42% from the latter on Rotten Tomatoes. Assassin’s Creed also stars Brendan Gleeson, Charlotte Rampling, and the late Michael Kenneth Williams.

Liam Neeson might be a household name now, but the inception of his career can be traced back to low-budget film/television titles and modest stage productions. In fact, filmmaker John Boorman noticed Neeson's potential when he was on stage for "Of Mice and Men," which led to his film debut in the 1981 Arthurian saga, "Excalibur." Sure enough, "Excalibur" opened many doors for Neeson, and he starred in a handful of projects over the years, including 1986's "The Mission."
In that film, Neeson played a Catholic missionary in 18th-century South America alongside Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons, and this small yet impactful role altered the trajectory of Neeson's acting career. You see, De Niro introduced Neeson to an American casting director while they were filming together, which allowed the latter to acquire a work visa in the U.S. and work his way up the ranks. David Cronenberg has offered up his thoughts on the backlash that the Oscar-winning film The Brutalist was on the receiving end of throughout awards season.
The Canadian filmmaker was at a London Soundtrack Festival talk with career-long collaborator Howard Shore to discuss some of the films they’ve partnered on over the years.
The two visionaries discussed M. Butterfly, Cronenberg’s 1993 film about a French diplomat (Jeremy Irons) who becomes infatuated with a Chinese opera performer, Song Liling (John Lone). Their affair lasts for 20 years, and they subsequently marry, but Irons’ character is unaware or willfully ignorant that Liling is a man.
Cronenberg compared his editing of the film to the criticism surrounding Brady Corbet’s post-war epic when it was revealed that artificial intelligence was used on the film’s lead, Brody (who went on to win the best actor Oscar for his performance), to enhance the accuracy of his character’s Hungarian accent.

In the grand pantheon of comic book adaptations, The Rocketeer stands as one of the most curious cases of Hollywood misfires (although we love it here at JoBlo). A film that had all the makings of a blockbuster—charismatic leads, a visionary director, thrilling aerial action, and the full backing of Disney—it instead crash-landed at the box office and left behind a legacy of what could have been. So what happened to The Rocketeer? Why did it fail to take off upon release, and why has Disney left it to languish in obscurity instead of embracing its cult status? Let’s strap on our rocket packs and find out.
The story of The Rocketeer begins with the comic book series created by Dave Stevens in 1982. The character, Cliff Secord, was a loving homage to the pulp serials of the 1930s and 40s, particularly King of the Rocket Men. With...

Today, Samuel L. Jackson is one of the most famous and beloved actors. He is also extremely prolific, having appeared in numerous movies, and even franchises, among which are several of Quentin Tarantino’s films, the Star Wars franchise (where he played Mace Windu), and the MCU, where he is still playing Nick Fury.
The latter is related – in a very indirect and odd way – to an older role Jackson played back in 1995. It is the role of electrician Zeus Carver in Die Hard with a Vengeance, where he became the unlikely partner of Bruce Willis’ John McClane in the latter’s pursuit of Simon Peter Gruber, played by Jeremy Irons.

Assassin's Creed is one of the worst video game adaptations of all time, but it has turned into a streaming hit on Max. The 2016 flop starred Michael Fassbender, who was red-hot coming off two excellent X-Men prequels, Marion Cotillard (Inception), and Jeremy Irons (who was in the terrible adaptation of Dungeons and Dragons). It's currently at number two on Max's Top 10 movie list in the United States, and is also in the Top 10 in a few countries worldwide.
The movie is a film adaptation by director Justin Kurzel (The Snowtown Murders) and is based on the popular video game series and follows Cal Lynch / Aguilar (Fassbender), who travels back in time to learn how to be an assassin from his ancestors so he can fight the Templar Knights in the present day. The film is as ridiculous as it sounds, despite the incredible talent appearing on the screen.

More than once throughout his 50-year career, British writer J.G. Ballard's writing turned out to be eerily prescient. From the more straight sci-fi of his early-60s work to the surreal and often controversial satires of the '70s, Ballard had an uncanny knack for turning humanity's worst tendencies into art. His works have been adapted to film by directors as disparate as David Cronenberg and Steven Spielberg, a testament to the range of his talents. One of his most celebrated works, 1975's High-Rise, received its own film treatment back in 2015, courtesy of eclectic filmmaker Ben Wheatley, the director behind such acclaimed indie fare as Kill List, A Field in England, and Free Fire.
Following the residents of a state-of-the-art high-rise apartment building that quickly devolves into chaos when the amenities break down, Ballard's novel chillingly satirizes the ways that the upper classes cannibalize each other when their imagined social order begins to crumble.

Die Hard has become a classic, for its thrilling action and because some consider it a Christmas movie. However, not everyone loved the movie upon its release, like film critic Roger Ebert, who had one major problem with the movie. Even more surprising, Ebert had glowing reviews for the next two films in the series, and likened the films to the James Bond movies.
Ebert Thought 'Die Hard 2' Did Action Well
Roger Ebert much preferred Die Hard 2: Die Harder over the original. He gave Die Hard 2 three-and-a-half stars out of four, compared to the two stars he gave Die Hard. To him, Die Hard 2 was "terrific entertainment," and a film that would have your date clutching your arm during some of the tenser moments. In his review, Ebert wrote:
"Die Hard 2 is as unlikely as the Bond pictures, and as much fun.

Humankind has waged war since before the beginning of recorded time. The first massacre took place around 10,000 years ago in Kenya, while the first definitive war took place several millennia later between the Sumerians and the Elamites in Mesopotamia circa 2,700 BC. From these bloody beginnings was born one of our most enduring and consistent institutions: War. The word itself sounds harsh, owing to its origins from the old High German word "werran," meaning "to confuse." Could there be a more accurate description?
It should be no surprise that war "movies" began before the advent of motion pictures as an art form or industry. The earliest war footage (some of it staged) was probably from the Greco-Turkish War of 1897, while the first proper war film was "Tearing Down The Spanish Flag" released in 1898 as a 90-second short film for nickelodeon theaters. Since its first season in 2019, AppleTV+'sThe Morning Show starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon has walked the line between drama, satire, and comedy. It addresses relevant and hard-hitting topics in the cultural landscape of America (and sometimes the world) with deft delicacy. And it tends not to shy away from pointing out nuances in any of its subject matter, leaving its characters far from black and white. As with most TV shows, it suffered a delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Season 2 was in production and already written when everything ground to a halt.

The Beekeeper 2 with Jason Statham is in the works at Miramax. Unfortunately, one member of the original movie's creative team will not be returning (at least in the same role) for the action sequel.
According to Deadline, David Ayer will not be returning as director for The Beekeeper 2, with Nobody 2 helmer Timo Tjahjanto tapped as his replacement. Ayer is currently busy filming the Brad Pitt-led movie The Heart of the Beast for Paramount. However, Miramax is hoping that Ayer will join the sequel in a producing capacity. Kurt Wimmer returned to write the screenplay for The Beekeeper 2, which is slated to begin production this fall. Amazon MGM Studios is expected to secure the sequel's domestic rights. The company previously handled distribution on the 2024 original.
