This Day That Year: Looking Back at Ram Gopal Varma’s Department
Image
As Ram Gopal Varma’s Department turns 13, Subhash K Jha looks back at the drama in this new installment of This Day That Year.

Welcome to Rgv’s world of muck and mayhem. The one definite thing that must be said about Rgv is that his exploration of the nexus between the law and the underworld is ceaselessly seeking new modes of storytelling. Department is one breathless surge of aggression and violence. Shot with cameras that capture the actors at their quirkiest and most candid, the film is not for those who think cinema is all about style. Rgv left his stylish days behind in Rangeela and Company.

Repeatedly and mercilessly, Rgv dismantles all conventions of pretty storytelling and aims for the jugular. The camera angles are often much too casual to be considered ‘cinematic’. But breaking rules is a given in Rgv’s cinema. He breaks them in Department...

Clint Eastwood's Son Has Starred In Two Very Different Westerns, But Both Were Flops
Image
Clint Eastwood is the quintessential Western star, known for his steely gaze and quick draw, who went on to become one of the greatest directors of all time. He holds the record for being the oldest to win the Oscar for Best Director, receiving the award at the age of ripe old age of 74 for the boxing weepie "Million Dollar Baby." 20 years later, Eastwood is still making movies; at the age of 93, he released the intense courtroom drama "Juror #2." He also has a son, Scott Eastwood, who's taking advantage of his familial status by being featured in his dad's movies.

He's appeared in several of Clint Eastwood's films, including "Flags of Our Fathers," "Gran Torino," and "Invictus." Scott has also followed in his father's footsteps by stepping into the Western genre, although his efforts pale in comparison to the Sergio Leone classics that helped make Clint a legend. Two of...

Wes Anderson Remembers Gene Hackman Being “Furious” About ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’ Flat-Fee Salary: “We Had Friction”
Image
Ahead of the Cannes premiere of his latest film, The Phoenician Scheme, Wes Anderson reflected on the 12 (going on 13) features he’s made, including his approach to keeping costs down while employing elaborate world-building set designs.

In a new interview with The Times U.K., the Oscar winner reflected on how his breakthrough sophomore film Rushmore, starring eventual frequent collaborator Bill Murray, cemented his flat-fee salary approach for all talent, to the chagrin of the late Gene Hackman.

“Gene was very annoyed about the money,” Anderson said of the pic that followed the aforementioned 1998 feature, 2001’s The Royal Tenenbaums, which marks one of Hackman’s final performances. “He was furious. Also, he didn’t want to do the film anyway. I talked him into it — I just didn’t go...

Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

When one thinks of the greatest Western TV shows of all time, titles like "Gunsmoke" and "Deadwood" will likely (and rightfully) start ringing. For any Western fan who wants to rewatch this epic four-part glory (or any lucky son of a gun who gets to see it for the first time), "Lonesome Dove" is currently streaming on Prime Video and Peacock. If you're shuffling between streaming services (who isn't nowadays?) and don't currently have either, the series is also available for free on YouTube.

Adapted from Larry McMurty's novel of the same name, the miniseries boasts a downright legendary roster: Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Diane Lane, and Danny Glover make up the main cast, with names like Chris Cooper, Steve Buscemi, and...

Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon (1987)
Lethal Weapon | 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray goes up for preorder in UK
Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon (1987)
1987’s Lethal Weapon is arriving on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in June: more details on the new release right this way.

Warner Bros continues to mine its back catalogue of titles really rather well, and also support physical media too. The latest case in point: Richard Donner’s 1987 favourite Lethal Weapon is heading to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, and it’s just gone up for preorder.

There are gaps in the information at the moment. No release date has been announced yet, although the expectation now is that the film will be landing this side of the summer. Furthermore, it’s unclear if we’re getting any fresh extra features either. We are getting both the theatrical and the director’s cut of the film, though.

And we are definitely getting the original Lethal Weapon on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format for the first time. So far, the Steelbook edition is available to order.

Run Werewolf Run - An Illustrated Werewolf Novel by Onur Tukel: "Run Werewolf Run is the first novel from filmmaker Onur Tukel, who adapted it from a feature film script he wrote in 2018. "I've always loved this script," Tukel said. "It's one of my favorite projects. Covid complicated production for so many films in 2020, and I really wanted to bring this project to fruition, so adapting it as a novel made sense. It was much harder than writing a script, of course. I thought it might take a year or two, but it ended up taking five years.

Takashi Shimizu
This Terrifying J-Horror Remake Is Now Streaming For Free!
Takashi Shimizu
The early aughts launched a wave of horror remakes, but they’re especially known as an era full of American remakes of Japanese horror classics. One such adaptation is Takashi Shimizu‘s 2004 film, The Grudge, based on the Japanese film Ju-On: The Grudge, which Shimizu directed in 2002. It’s not often the original director is brought on for the American adaptation, so this is a fascinating film even for just that reason.

In the film, “An American nurse living and working in Tokyo is exposed to a mysterious supernatural curse, one that locks a person in a powerful rage before claiming their life and spreading to another victim.“

The Grudge stars horror icon Sarah Michelle Gellar, as well as Jason Behr (Roswell) and Clea DuVall (The Faculty). It was a massive hit upon release, raking in a reported $187.3 million on a $10 million budget. It was released when I was a kid,...

Killer of Sheep (1978)
"This is who we are" by Paul Risker
Killer of Sheep (1978)
Killer Of Sheep Photo: courtesy of Film Forum

American director Charles Burnett's 1977 student film and indie classic, Killer Of Sheep, captures a snapshot of everyday life in the Black community. The loosely structured story of vignettes, with a neorealist and semi-documentary sensibility, revolves around Stan (Henry Gayle Sanders), who works at a slaughterhouse. The bloody work is eating away at his soul, and his exhaustion leaves his connection with his wife and children strained. Meanwhile, the kids venture into the streets, where the nature of their reality strips away their innocent sensibilities, as their play is intruded upon by the need to learn how to survive.

Martin Scorsese has said, "Charles Burnett is one of the finest filmmakers in this country. His pictures speak in a cinematic voice that is uniquely and completely his own." In Burnett's 1990 black comedy, To Sleep With Anger, Danny Glover plays the unexpected visitor who brings trouble to the.

‘Predator: Killer of Killers’ Takes the Franchise to the Viking Era: Where (and When) Else Have Predators Gone?
Image
“Predator: Killer of Killers” arrives this summer on Hulu, the first animated film in the long-running franchise and one of two new “Predator” movies due out this year. “Killer of Killers” also finds the franchise headed to another era — actually, in this case, three.

The new animated film, directed by “Prey” filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg and set to release on June 6, 2025, will be an anthology story. In total, fans will get to experience a Predator story in the Viking era, feudal Japan, and WWII Europe, each with different heroes leading them. More details on that below.

But before we get there, let’s take stock of everywhere — and every time — the “Predator” franchise has been. It actually dates back pretty far.

Predator (1987) 20th Century Fox

The first “Predator” film, released back in 1987 — with the events of the film taking place the same year — stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Dutch Schaefer, who is...

Samuel L. Jackson Clashed With Quentin Tarantino Over Jules’ Wig In Pulp Fiction & Proved His Instincts Right
Image
Samuel L. Jackson Wig Clash(Photo Credit –Facebook)

Samuel L. Jackson never backed down from making bold choices, especially when it came to his look. In Pulp Fiction, his character, Jules Winnfield, became instantly recognizable with his jheri curl wig. But getting that hairstyle on screen wasn’t easy. Jackson had to fight Quentin Tarantino for it.

Jackson always saw his appearance as part of his craft. Early in his career, he made a conscious effort to change up his look for every role. For Pulp Fiction, he had a vision for Jules’ hair – one that Tarantino didn’t share at first.

“It was my deliberate choice to be as different as I possibly could in as many films as I could,” Jackson told Gentleman’s Journal. “So I made my face and my hair and my beard my canvas. It was my idea for the wig in Pulp Fiction.

American Dreamer (2022)
Plaion Pictures has announced that American Dreamer, a new dark comedy starring Peter Dinklage as a new homeowner who gets more than he bargained for, is now available on digital. Ice Cube's Filming Accident In The $154M Buddy Cop Movie Convinced Kevin Hart To Stop Doing Stunts
Image
Buddy cop movies are a staple of the action-comedy genre, pairing mismatched partners who must overcome their differences to chase down criminals. Director Richard Donner's Lethal Weapon series is well-known for popularizing the buddy-cop genre, as Mel Gibson's reckless cop and Danny Glover's by-the-book officer made for plenty of mishaps and over-the-top action sequences. The 1980s/90s franchise went on to inspire a new wave of buddy cop films, including Rush Hour, Bad Boys, and Shanghai Noon.

More recently, the genre has evolved with hits like 21 Jump Street, The Other Guys, The Heat, and The Nice Guys. Among the modern entries in the genre, Ride Along carved out its own space thanks to the comedic energy of Kevin Hart, which paired hilariously with Ice Cube's stoic intensity. With a $154 million global box office haul, Ride Along became a surprise hit, setting the stage for its 2016 sequel.

Athol Fugard, South African Playwright Who Spoke to Worldwide Audiences, Dies at 92
Image
Athol Fugard, the South African playwright of works including ” ‘Master Harold’…and the Boys,” ”The Road to Mecca,” “Boesman and Lena,” ”A Lesson From Aloes,” died on Saturday. He was 92.

While a cause of death was not disclosed, the South African government confirmed Fugard’s death and said South Africa “has lost one of its greatest literary and theatrical icons, whose work shaped the cultural and social landscape of our nation,” according to AP.

Fugard brought critical, wrenching portrayals of South African society under apartheid to international stages, including Broadway, helping to generate the wave of worldwide criticism that eventually led to the end of that policy in the country, in the process gaining wider access for South African dramaturgy outside that nation. He was also an actor and director, and a number of his works were adapted into films.

In a 2014 profile of Fugard, NPR dubbed the playwright South...

Rotten Tomatoes Says This Is The Best John Grisham Movie Adaptation
Image
For a moment in the 1990s, adapting a John Grisham novel into a movie was akin to printing money. It all started with "The Firm," a film that had the good fortune of coming along just as its leading man, Tom Cruise, was really hitting his stride that decade thanks to "A Few Good Men." Of course, it helped that the 1993 legal thriller also paired Tommy C with the dream team of director Sydney Pollack, writer Robert Towne, and a killer supporting cast featuring Jeanne Tripplehorn, Ed Harris, Holly Hunter, Wilford Brimley, and the ever-on-point Gene Hackman.

(Fun fact: "The Firm" is also the flick Aubrey Plaza's character is watching as she practices her meat-beating skills in "The To Do List." If having your movie serve as the punchline in a teen sex romp isn't something all filmmakers aspire to, then I dunno what we're even doing.)

On top of striking box office gold,...

Mel Gibson Action Thriller 'Hot Seat' Finds Success on Free Streaming
Image
Oscar-winner and controversial Hollywood star Mel Gibson remains popular with audiences, as the Braveheart and Lethal Weapon actor’s severely panned 2022 action thriller dominates free streaming. Gibson, who remains a polarizing figure following issues with alcohol and a series of controversies, including well-publicized antisemitic tirades, homophobic comments, and a domestic violence-related restraining order, was recently appointed a "Special Ambassador" for Hollywood by President Donald Trump. And, clearly, audiences still find Gibson a magnetic screen presence...especially when it's free.

Directed and produced by James Cullen Bressack, and starring Kevin Dillon, Shannen Doherty, and Michael Welch alongside Gibson, the action thriller Hot Seat is now #1 on free streaming platform Freevee, with audiences loving this tale of an anonymous criminal who plants a bomb under the chair of an ex-hacker, forcing him to break into several high-level banking institutions. You can check out the official synopsis for Hot Seat below.

Gene Hackman's Best Royal Tenenbaums Scene Highlighted His Ferocity As An Actor
Gene Hackman at an event for The 60th Annual Golden Globe Awards (2003)
It is a testament to the depth and breadth of the career of Gene Hackman that, upon the announcement of his passing at the age of 95, people have come together on social media to praise him, but without a uniform winner among his large filmography. Comic-book fans can continue to marvel at how he set the standard for villainous characters with his take on Lex Luthor in "Superman: The Movie." Fans of modern action movies are no doubt fondly remembering his work in the tense and sweaty thriller "Crimson Tide," among other examples. And the number of dramas he made, introspective or otherwise, are nearly innumerable. You can find so many examples of brilliance in Gene Hackman's list of credits, across so many genres. One of the most common threads throughout his career was his deft ability to create effectively memorable confrontations with his fellow performers, taking what's written on...

The death of Angus Cloud in 2023 was a tragic blow for the must-see series, but Barbie Ferreira and Storm Reid's departures have also been tough pills to swallow, and all three actors will be sorely missed. In fact, Reid said that not returning as Zendaya’s on-screen sister, Gia Bennett, is "bittersweet" in an interview with Variety:

"That’s my sister before 'Euphoria' and after. That’s gonna be my sister for life, so I’m sure we’ll work together again one day in some capacity. [It’s] bittersweet. I love Gia. I loved being able to embody her and give her life. I’m really excited for Season 3. I know they’re going to do something special, and...

“Why me?” | The bizarre experience of watching films on British TV in the 80s and 90s
Image
From dubbed actors to jarring edits to terrible image quality, watching films on British TV was a minefield in the 80s and 90s…

Saturday the 5th August was a truly magical day on BBC One. Not just because Dale Winton – assisted by the ever-dependable Terry Nutkins – presented a vintage episode of Pets Win Prizes. Or because Tony Robinson presented Stay Tuned!, a thoroughly charming series about the history of animation.

No, the 5th August was particularly memorable because it featured an unusually early screening of shark attack sequel, Jaws The Revenge. Its 6pm air time was so early, in fact, that the BBC wound up cutting out roughly 10 minutes of its gore and toothsome mayhem to keep it friendly for a pre-watershed audience. Never a long film to begin with (roughly an hour and a half), the Jaws sequel which showed that summer evening ran for just 80 minutes.

This was...

Gene Hackman’s Second Chapter: What to Know About His Career as a Novelist
Image
If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission.

Gene Hackman’s film career is shorthand for greatness, from roles like Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation to Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven. As Rolling Stone’s Rob Sheffield put it, “no film was ever worse off for having Hackman in it.” The actor, born in 1930, had his breakout role in Bonnie and Clyde before appearing in The French Connection, which won him the Best Actor award at the Oscars.

Why The Royal Tenenbaums Is Now The Perfect Gene Hackman Swansong
Image
Royal O’Reilly Tenenbaum 1932-2001: Died Tragically Rescuing His Family From The Wreckage Of A Destroyed Sinking Battleship

– Royal Tenenbaum’s epitaph

Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) is not Gene Hackman’s final film. But it feels now, in the wake of the sad news of his death at the age of 95, that Tenenbaums — a witty, warm comic family drama about a flawed patriarch who re-enters his family’s life after years of absence and estrangement — is a beautifully appropriate swansong for the beloved actor. In its own sardonic, eccentric sort of way, it is a story of a man in his twilight years, reaching the end of his life and surveying what he has, what he misses, what he values. It is sweet, it is surprising, and in a career disproportionately stacked with brilliant performances, it possesses one of the best Gene Hackman performances ever recorded on celluloid.

Kamala Harris Urges Collective Action in Troubled Time at NAACP Image Awards: “We Have No Illusions About What We Are Up Against”
Image
Former vice president and 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris received a hero’s reception, including multiple standing ovations and enthusiastic applause, at the 2025 NAACP Image Awards, where she was on hand to receive the Chairman’s Award.

Seated in the audience with husband Doug Emhoff, Harris was introduced by NAACP board of directors chair Leon W. Russell.

“Against impossible odds, she gave America a campaign that was a force of nature,” Russell said of Harris’ 2024 presidential bid, which saw her ascend to the top of the Democratic ticket in late July after President Joe Biden ended his re-election effort. “No one else could’ve accomplished what she did, and no one else is more deserving of our gratitude.”

Harris, of course, ultimately lost the general election to the Republican candidate, President Donald Trump. However, she received more than 75 million votes after a campaign that lasted roughly 100 days.

While Harris’ political future remains unknown,...

Kamala Harris Takes Swipes At Trump, Elon Musk At NAACP Image Awards; Decries “Shadows Gathering Over Our Democracy”
Image
“Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty,” Kamala Harris told the NAACP Image Awards on Saturday night in her first major public appearance since leaving office last month.

Accepting this year’s Chairman’s Award on Saturday at the 56th NAACP Image Awards, the ex-vp came on stage to a standing ovation from the star studded attendees at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Resurrecting her campaign mantra of “We the People,” California-born Harris sounded a lot like someone who wasn’t thinking of retiring from public life.

“This chapter will be written, not simply by whoever occupies the Oval Office, nor by the wealthiest among us,” the former Vice President and 2024 White House candidate added with a swipe at Donald Trump and Elon Musk without mentioning either of her political foes by name. “The American story will be written by you, written by us, by We the People.” — as you can...

Kamala Harris Gives Rousing NAACP Image Awards Speech in First TV Appearance After Leaving Office: ‘Our Power Has Never Come From Having an Easy Path’
Image
Former Vice President Kamala Harris gave a rousing speech at the 56th NAACP Image Awards on Saturday night at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California, where she accepted the organization’s Chairman’s Award.

“This organization came into being at a moment when our country struggled with greed, bitterness and hatred. And those who forged the NAACP, those who carried its legacy forward, had no illusions about the forces they were up against — no illusions about how stony the road would be,” Harris said on stage in her first TV appearance since leaving office. “But some look at this moment and rightly feel the weight of history. Some see the flames on our horizons, the rising waters in our cities, the shadows gathering over our democracy, and ask, ‘What do we do now?’ But we know exactly what to do, because we have done it before, and we will do it again.

'I Wish I Had Done That': Mel Gibson Reflects on Turning Down Gladiator and James Bond
Image
Many actors passed on iconic roles — whether due to scheduling, fear of typecasting, or not having enough confidence in the material. Years later, Mel Gibson reflected on turning down some big roles.

The actor starred in many iconic roles, including 1979's Mad Max, 1987's Lethal Weapon, and 1995's Braveheart. He has also stepped behind the camera as a director and directed the critically and commercially successful The Passion of the Christ, among other projects. However, at the 2025 Megacon Orlando, the actor addressed passing on James Bond and Gladiator roles, per People.

1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger Action Movie 'Predator' is Streaming Free on Tubi
Image
The Predator franchise recently received a huge shot to the arm in 2023 with the arrival of Prey, Dan Trachtenberg’s incredible prequel to the 1987 original that refreshed and revived the sci-fi action franchise, and for many even surpassed the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger movie in several ways. Now, audiences are reminding themselves of how Arnie tried, and failed, to get everyone to the chopper almost 40 years ago, and have made the original film an apex predator of Tubi's free streaming chart.

Directed by John McTiernan—who would later helm Die Hard—Predator stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer, leading an elite Special Forces team on a covert rescue mission in Central America – well didn’t he always. What should have been a routine operation soon spirals into a bloody and desperate battle for survival when the group find themselves under attack from an invisible and deadly hunter unlike anything they have encountered before.

Action fans, get ready to barely contain your glee, as Lethal Weapon stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover have reunited amid talk of a fifth outing in the beloved buddy cop franchise. “I’m too old for this sh*t”: Guillermo Del Toro’s Canceled DC Movie, if Revived, Can Not Only Decimate the Box Office but Also Potentially Win Multiple Oscars
Image
Since the controversial fall of the Dceu regime, the remainder of the projects under development receded back into the shadows. Among the many whose names stuck out is Justice League Dark, a film that once sought out the great Mexican auteur Guillermo del Toro as its director. But it wasn’t meant to be.

Justice League Dark (2017) [Credit: Warner Bros. Home Entertainment]

Over time, and with a mighty push from Black Adam, the Dceu was officially dismantled in October 2022. As such, the Guillermo del Toro project fell through as well despite the master of horror devoting his career to bringing such characters as Swamp Thing and Etrigan the Demon to life.

Now, under the light of the new DC leadership, wandering minds cannot help but think of what greatness could be accomplished if only the suits and the execs had put studio politics aside to make one of the greatest movies happen.
