5 Actors Who Refuse to Work With David Fincher Again — Including Rdj & Jake Gyllenhaal
Image
David Fincher might be the guy behind your favorite mind-bending thrillers, but on set, he’s got a bit of a reputation — think genius director meets control freak — with a habit of running scenes so many times you lose count (and maybe your sanity). That level of intensity might result in cinematic gold, but not every actor is signing up for round two. In fact, some have quietly (or not-so-quietly) vowed never to step on one of his sets again.

You’d think that an auteur with a Best Director Oscar nomination under his belt would have actors lining up at his door, and in most cases, that’s true. But Fincher’s “my way or 75 takes later” style has pushed even A-listers to their breaking point. We’re talking about stars who’ve headlined billion-dollar franchises, award winners, and indie darlings alike, each walking away with unforgettable performances… and unforgettable tension.

Celebrating 2003’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Image
If there was a horror movie remake scales of justice, it would be tipping heavily toward the side reading “Failure.” Most of the time, the film being revisited is a classic and really begs the question as to why it needs to be made again in the first place. Every once in a while, though, a remake will come along that defies expectations—one that deserves to be given a chance because of the care that was clearly taken to quench the thirst of fans of the original as well as bring new fans into the family. The Marcus Nispel-directed Texas Chainsaw Massacre from 2003 is one of those films. It hit all the right notes, captured the right tone, and cut off the right limbs.

From the opening voiceover, once again recorded by original narrator John Larroquette (though he probably got paid with actual money this time for his...

Image
New Line Cinema's Chief Commercial Officer shoots down a sequel to David Fincher's Se7en, unless one specific person returns.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, New Line Cinema Cco Richard Brener was asked if a sequel to Se7en was anywhere on the studio's horizon. The 10 Most Realistic War Movies, Ranked
Image
Hundreds of war movies exist, designed to thrill audiences, sometimes at the behest of the summer movie season -- we're looking at you "Pearl Harbor." Too often, Hollywood neglects to tell the whole story, resulting in cookie-cutter pictures like John Wayne's "The Green Berets" or generic action extravaganzas like John Woo's "Windtalkers." Sure, they may contain state-of-the-art special effects, A-list stars, and rousing battle scenes, but they too often rely on genre cliches or wrap their historical backdrops around sappy romantic subplots.

What's missing? Well, all great war movies contain a pivotal ingredient: realism. Far too many pictures nix this key element and wind up as shallow cash grabs that exploit history for their own benefit. Luckily, plenty of directors also went to great lengths to achieve optimal realism, ensuring audiences walked away from their pictures with a greater understanding of the strength and sacrifices of those who died on the battlefield.

Vince Vaughn & Ben Stiller's 'The Watch' is Now a Streaming Hit on Hulu
Image
Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn were two of the biggest comedy stars of the 1990s and early 2000s, appearing in a series of hit movies that defined the era. Vaughn’s breakout role in Swingers, followed by memorable turns in Old School and Wedding Crashers, paired with Stiller’s iconic performances in There’s Something About Mary and Zoolander, established them as Hollywood’s go-to funnymen. The duo even showcased their comedic chemistry by collaborating in Dodgeball: A True Underdog’s Story. But as the 2010s rolled in, the Frat Pack frenzy began to wane, and their sci-fi comedy, The Watch, failed to leave a mark. But the tables have turned, and The Watch has recently become a streaming hit on Hulu, where it ranks #8 as of February 19.

The Watch follows the story of four suburban dads – Evan (Ben Stiller), Bob (Vince Vaughn), Franklin (Jonah Hill), and Jamarcus (Richard Ayoade...

Zack Snyder’s ‘Dawn of the Dead’ Does This One Key Thing Better Than the Original
Image
The 2000s were the era of the remake and the reboot for horror. It seemed like every classic scary movie was getting a reimagining, and while most were unnecessary, a few set themselves apart by trying something different from the masterpieces that came before them. For example, there was no way of topping The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, but the 2003 reboot worked by changing the plot just enough, and making R. Lee Ermey's character somehow more terrifying than Leatherface himself.

Director David Fincher Reveals Why Denzel Washington Wasn't Cast in Se7en
Image
Se7en's ensemble would have been led by other A-list Hollywood actors. Director David Fincher said the dark script repelled most candidates including Denzel Washington, who was an early frontrunner.

Director David Fincher said A-list Hollywood actors were tapped to lead the film's ensemble; most thought the script was deplorable. "Almost everybody that I sent it to originally also passed," he told The Independent. "I sent it to Ned Beatty to play John Doe, and he wouldn't even consider it. Almost everyone thought that the film was far too ghoulish to deal with." Val Kilmer was also a candidate but declined, and R. Lee Ermey, who played Full Metal Jacket's iconic villain, was passed over. Denzel Washington was also heavily courted to play David Mills but repeatedly rejected the offer.

David Fincher Wanted Ned Beatty, Christopher Guest for 'Se7en' Villain
Image
Se7en, the deeply disturbing serial killer film from director David Fincher, is turning 30 this year. While you silently cry over how many years have passed, here's an awesome detail that Fincher has just confirmed: Kevin Spacey wasn't his first choice to play the cold-blooded killer, John Doe. As it turns out, another, much different Hollywood legend was his first pick.

Fincher spoke to Variety about the film's upcoming 4K restoration, and he used the opportunity to reminisce about making such an important film in his career. Alien 3 had opened to terrible reviews, and three years later, Fincher was still feeling the effects of an industry that had turned its back on him. Fortunately, it all worked out for the best, as Se7en shot him into stardom as one of modern cinema's most interesting auteurs.

David Fincher used modern technology to undo a mistake in his 1995 thriller that had been bothering him for 30 years. Widely regarded as one of the best directors working today, Fincher has received Academy Award nominations for Best Director for the dramas The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Social Network, and Mank. Though he started his career directing music videos, Fincher made his feature film debut in 1992 with Alien 3, which the director disowned due to studio interference, and his breakthrough was the 1995 crime thriller, Seven.

Stanley Kubrick's 90% Rotten Tomatoes War Masterpiece Is Coming to Paramount+
Image
Stanley Kubrick helmed 13 full-length features throughout his career, six of which were war films. Full Metal Jacket is arguably his magnum opus with its jarring depiction of war from the frontline perspective.

Paramount+ is streaming Full Metal Jacket this December. This 1987 war drama was the last of Stanley Kubrick's films released during his lifetime. Kubrick also appeared in cameos sneaked into two scenes; the director played the voice of Sergeant Murphy during Cowboy Evans' (played by Arliss Howard) calls for reinforcements in the film's second half. Those scenes showed the characters' fortunes reversed, just like the tide of war's fickle swells. Among other themes, the movie explores human behavior's devolution to its most primal nature. Kubrick sidestepped questions about the meaning of the film, however, asserting the answer is nuanced and complex.

Louis Gossett Jr: Five Great Roles
Image
A few months ago, veteran character actor Louis Gossett Jr, who got his acting start in Broadway productions back in 1950s (including Take a Giant Step and a 1959 production of A Raisin in the Sun where he shared the stage with Sidney Poitier), passed away at 87. While we have to get used to the fact that our favorite actors are all human, and like all of us, eventually pass away, it can’t help but hurt anytime we lose a legend like this. But he leaves behind a rich legacy, so let’s look back at five of his coolest roles.

An Officer and a Gentleman:

Louis Gossett Jr. won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley in this, and became the first African-American actor to win an Academy Award in that category in the process. Next to R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket,...

The True Story Behind The Roger Ebert-Approved Mississippi Burning
Image
In 1988, as the tension of the Cold War began to wind down and a decade of excess and decadence came to its inevitable conclusion, audiences went to theaters to watch a film entitled Mississippi Burning. Led by a stellar cast that featured Gene Hackman, Willem Dafoe, Brad Dourif, Frances McDormand, and Michael Rooker, Mississippi Burning depicted domestic terrorism, unrestrained violence, oppression, and a murder investigation being spearheaded by two FBI agents. Alan Parker, who had previously directed Pink Floyd: The Wall and Angelheart, was at the helm of this production, one that film critic Roger Ebert described as an important statement about a time and a condition that should not be forgotten.

The words from Roger Eberts 4/4-star review of Mississippi Burning are poignant regarding the content of Parkers film. Mississippi Burning was based on a true story from a time when the struggle for equality and civil rights was...

Vincent D'Onofrio's Intense Scene In Oscar-Nominated 1987 War Movie Gets Near-Perfect Score By Expert For Acknowledging Struggles For Soldiers
Image
The 1980s was a strong decade for war movies, particularly movies exploring the Vietnam War, which ended for the Americans in 1975. After titles like The Deer Hunter (1978) and Apocalypse Now (1979) several key movies in the '80 leaned into the less flashy aspects of the Vietnam War, questioning the morality of the conflict and exploring its psychological consequences for the soldiers on the ground.

Oliver Stone's Platoon (1986) remains one of the most important movies about the Vietnam War, featuring harrowing depictions of combat and what life was like for the average American grunt. Hamburger Hill (1987) is another notable title from the decade, as is Born on the Fourth of July (1989), which takes a different approach to the war by following one of its Veterans as he becomes disillusioned by the conflict. Another 1987 film, however, remains a Vietnam War classic, offering up some truly chilling scenes.

Full Metal Jackets Matthew Modine Slams Donald Trump for Using Clips in Propaganda Video
Image
Stanley Kubrick's award-winning Vietnam War movie Full Metal Jacket is stirring up controversy after the Donald Trump presidential campaign used clips from the film for a "propaganda" video. One of the stars of the film, Matthew Modine, has now unequivocally blasted the campaign's appropriation of Kubrick's masterpiece, calling it a perversion of Full Metal Jacket's pivotal anti-war message. However, in a surprise twist, the late director's daughter Vivian Kubrick declared via social media that the former Potus has her blessing in using the movie "to [help] the cause of freedom."

Sections from the 1987 psychological war drama have begun to appear in videos at Trump rallies to spread a vision of the former president's ideal military. The clips in question highlight R. Lee Ermey's vulgar and often racist rampages as the battle-hardened Marine Sargent in charge of whipping Modine's Private Joker and other new recruits into shape. This...

‘Full Metal Jacket’ Star Matthew Modine Compares Trump to Hitler After He Used Kubrick’s Film in Military Ad: It’s ‘Perverse, Homophobic Propaganda’
Image
Matthew Modine is comparing Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler after Trump used footage from the actor’s iconic movie “Full Metal Jacket” in a recent campaign ad touting the U.S. military. Modine starred as the wisecracking marine J. T. “Joker” Davis in Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 anti-war movie. Trump used clips from the film in an ad that he shared on social media with the following caption: “We will not have a woke military!”

“In the 1930s, Leni Riefenstahl directed the Nazi propaganda films ‘Triumph of the Will’ and ‘Olympia,'” Modine told Entertainment Weekly in an emailed statement about Trump’s ad. “These two films are considered among the most effective propaganda ever made. Riefenstahl denied any knowledge of the Holocaust, repeatedly invoking the ‘how could we have known?’ defense. Ironically, Trump has twisted and profoundly distorted Kubrick’s powerful anti-war film into a perverse, homophobic, and manipulative tool of propaganda.

Body Snatchers (1993) – The Test of Time
Image
There are some stories in the history of film that end up being repeated over and over again. Some of these are just simple categories like vampire, werewolf, and zombie films. Some of them get a little more granular and specific like the story of Dracula or Frankenstein’s monster. Finally, we can get even more granular and look at a specific title that has made the rounds a few times. I Am Legend by the wonderful and prolific Richard Matheson was made into three different movies with Last Man on Earth, The Omega Man, and finally I Am Legend. While King Kong and Phantom of the Opera probably have the most, Invasion of the Body Snatchers has the most consistent offerings. The 2007 iteration was a bust but the other 3 are all incredibly solid. With the 90s version turning 30 we thought it was worth seeing if it was a generic...
