Dark castles, haunted forests, tragic romances, and twisted fairy tales...when Gothic sensibilities meet fantasy, it creates a moody, decadent genre that hits like no other. Gothic fantasy thrives on atmosphere. For me, it's the genre of black lace and blood red roses, of candlelit corridors and a cursed destiny. Whether you are new to the genre or just looking to revisit some old favorites, here are seven essential Gothic fantasy films that demand your attention, right now.
1. Crimson Peak (2015)
Director: Guillermo Del Toro
You can’t talk about modern Gothic fantasy without talking about Crimson Peak. It’s Guillermo Del Toro doing what he does best, melding the grotesque with the beautiful.
Crimson Peak is a ghost story wrapped in a tragic romance and dripping with rich period detail. An aspiring author named Edith (Mia Wasikowska) moves to a remote Gothic mansion with her new husband and sister-in-law. There,...

Sadie Sink might be swinging straight outta the Upside Down and into the Spider-Verse. Rumors are flying faster than Spidey on a webline that the Stranger Things breakout could be joining Tom Holland in the next Spider-Man flick.
While Marvel’s keeping her role under tighter wraps than a Demogorgon in a lab cage, fans are already flipping out over the idea of Max Mayfield teaming up—or facing off—with Peter Parker. Holland even dropped a sneaky hint about the project during a Good Morning America appearance last year.
Now, the fandom’s in full spec mode: Is she a friend? Foe? Or something far stranger?

Having turned 50 last year, the French film studio and arthouse cinema chain MK2 is far from a midlife crisis. The family-run company, which was founded by Marin Karmitz in 1974 and is now presided over by Nathanael and Elisha Karmitz, has never been more in the game. MK2 Films, whose international sales division is headed by Irish-born executive Fionnuala Jamison, rolled into Cannes with six films in competition and 12 in total across the Official Selection, likely more than any other sales outfits.
The company, which has always championed female auteurs, has been turning the spotlight on a new generation of daring female directors, from Celine Sciamma to Noemie Merlant, Justine Triet and Mati Diop. And at this year’s Cannes, they have three out of the seven competition films directed by female directors, Hafsia Herzi’s drama “La petite dernière,” Carla Simon’s “Romeria” and Mascha Schilinski’s “Sound of Falling” which has been unanimously praised.

Alexander Skarsgård — the six-foot-four Swedish actor you may know from playing one of two Northmen — is a giant, beautiful weirdo. Those less familiar with his work as a bloodthirsty creature of the night (or his character in “True Blood”) may only see a classic Hollywood hunk — the kind of guy who could conceivably marry Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst; who looks like he was built by Hasbro to sell Tarzan action figures but can still slap on a tuxedo and win the red carpet; who can convincingly step onscreen as a soldier or a doctor or an international man of mystery.
The Alexander Stangårds out there know better. They know the star’s mysterious allure sparks from within. They know his characters range from terrifying monsters to hilarious parodies of those monsters to something indefinable in between. They know even when he plays himself, he’ll somehow end up jerking...

Idle Hands, House on Haunted Hill, Dawson’s Creek, American Pie — these are some of the projects that you’d likely have spotted the cast of the original Final Destination in before the franchise-starting movie had its date with destiny in 2000. And, while Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, Kerr Smith, and Seann William Scott were all recognizable faces at the turn of the millennium, they weren’t quite as huge as, say, Kirsten Dunst or Courteney Cox — and that was the point. During an exciting live installment of Collider Ladies Night with Perri Nemiroff, which was preceded by a screening of Final Destination: Bloodlines, longtime franchise producer Sheila Hanahan Taylor spoke about the first casting decisions that allowed the movie to be not just entertaining but terrifyingly relatable.

Simon Pegg will soon be seen reuniting with Tom Cruise for their upcoming movie, and we honestly cannot wait to see the Mission: Impossible duo back in action. While Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is making its way to the theaters, there is one person who will not be able to attend the movie’s premiere – Matilda Pegg.
Due to commitments to her education, Simon Pegg’s teenage daughter will not be seen at the movie’s premiere. However, if it were up to Tom Cruise, Matilda would be by his father’s side on the red carpet, putting her school on the back burner. Luckily, Simon Pegg was right there to steer his daughter in the right direction.

Mikey Madison has signed onto her first movie after winning an Academy Award for her performance in Anora. Demi Moore was widely expected to be named the Oscars' Best Actress at this year's awards, only for Madison to win instead. She reportedly turned down a role in Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter movie starring Ryan Gosling.

Think about this: A new Oscar winner and a beloved former Spider-Man star are about to share the big screen together for a movie that sounds like a weird and intriguing fever dream. If Kirsten Dunst and Anora breakout star Mikey Madison fit the description perfectly, it's because the two are set to star in a new Alejandro Landes Echavarría feature called Reptilia that involves a dental hygienist and...a mermaid. As odd as it sounds, it's not too out of the ordinary for two women who have very diverse character resumes. Dunst was literally the love interest of a guy who got bit by a spider and turned into a superhero, and Madison was one of Scream 5's Ghostfaces. So they feel like a perfect fit for this new project.

Anora Oscar-winner Mikey Madison has found her next project, and it's certainly an unexpected choice.

Mikey Madison is setting up her first post-Oscar role as she’s set to star in Reptilia, a new feature from Alejandro Landes Echavarría (Monos). Kirsten Dunst will co-star in the movie about a dental hygienist who is seduced by a mysterious mermaid into the dark and wet underworld of Florida’s exotic animal trade. I take it this isn’t a Splash sequel.
The movie is based on a script by Landes Echavarría and Duke Merriman. It will be introduced to international buyers at the Cannes market by Charades. Principal photography will commence this fall.

Madison almost certainly had her pick of projects after winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for Anora, and Reptilia sounds like an interesting choice.
She’s had offers for much bigger projects, including Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars movie starring Ryan Gosling.

Which American Beauty Scene Changed Thora Birch’s Career? (Photo Credit –Facebook)
Thora Birch faded away from the Hollywood scene after she stepped away from the silver screen, leaving behind a legacy that echoed long after her exit. From the get go, she was one of those rare child actors who seemed carved for something big and early on, she held her own alongside the mighty Harrison Ford in 1994 film, Clear and Present Danger.
However, it was American Beauty in 1999 that truly cemented her status. It was a film of cinematic acclaim, which went on to snag five Oscars and eight nominations. Birch’s portrayal of Jane Burnham, the withdrawn teenager with a bruised soul and a sharp gaze, left a mark few could shake off.

Fargo wrapped up with its final season last year, and the show has seen many movie and TV veterans come and go through its five-season run. One of the stars from the first and second seasons of Fargo was Allison Tolman, famed for her role as Molly Solverson. Unlike many other TV shows, Fargo brings in a mostly new cast each season to tell a new story, with names like Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Hamm, and Jason Schwartzman all coming and going over the years. Tolman never came back after Season 2, but we now know this wasn’t due to a lack of interest. During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Tolman was asked about her time on Fargo, and she spoke about it fondly but also recalled how difficult it was to stand on the sidelines after departing the show:

Spider-Man fans, heads up. If you love Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy or the animated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse then you have few days left before these web-slinger stories leave Netflix. The Tobey Maguire-starring trilogy, directed by horror icon Raimi, was the kick-start of the superhero genre as we know it today.
The original Spider-Man trilogy sort of provides a blueprint of Peter Parker’s origin story on the big screen. Thanks to the success of these movies, fans around the world have a solid trilogy to go back to that also stars Willem Dafoe, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, and more. Furthermore, hints of what happened to the Og Peter after the movies ended can be found in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which brought back both Maguire and his successor, Andrew Garfield, to the MCU.

The Raimi trilogy’s influence on the then-blooming superhero landscape can’t be overstated, as not only did it set the benchmark for Spider-Man movies, it gave us one of the best CBMs of all time, Spider-Man 2. But despite all of its feats, Spider-Man 2, and the whole trilogy in general, couldn’t get one character right, Kirsten Dunst’s Mj.
Kirsten Dunst as Mj | Credits: Sony Pictures Releasing
From being the literal embodiment of the girl next door in the starting to a damsel in distress in the follow-ups, the screenwriters never got her character right. And one scene from Spider-Man 2 perfectly highlights the character’s narcissistic tendencies in the franchise.

While Spider-Man 2 perfectly demonstrates a superhero’s grapple between responsibility and personal struggles, the same can’t be said for Mj’s character progression.

Commandos! Get ready for a new crisp 4K Blu-ray release of the under-appreciated Joe Dante film Small Soldiers. The 1998 movie can be seen as a spiritual successor of sorts to Dante’s Gremlins series — as little sentient beings run amok on an unsuspecting group of people in a small town and it takes a plucky young hero, with his own little ally, to try to contain and destroy them. Blu-ray.com has reported that Paramount Home Media Distribution is set to release this new 4K remaster alongside a limited edition Steelbook Blu-ray on July 22.
The movie includes an all-star cast with Kirsten Dunst, Gregory Smith, Jay Mohr, Phil Hartman, Kevin Dunn, David Cross and Denis Leary. Meanwhile, the voice cast includes Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Brown, George Kennedy, Frank Langella, Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Ernest Borgnine, Harry Shearer, Bruce Dern, Clint Walker, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Christina Ricci.

Both Europe’s most right-wing nation and its second hottest destination for international shoots, Hungary has shocked the world with its recent ban on LGBTQ+ public events. But Hollywood is not yet ready to give up on the country’s generous tax incentives.
An amendment to the constitution passed on Monday by the Hungarian parliament codifies a law passed in March that made it an offense to hold or attend events that violate Hungary’s “child protection” legislation, which prohibits the “depiction or promotion” of homosexuality to minors under 18.
The Hungarian government will use measures to enforce the ban including the use of facial recognition software to identify those attending LGBTQ+ public events — such as Budapest Pride — and infractions can come with fines of up to 200,000 Hungarian forints ($546).
It’s not Hungary’s first anti-lgbtq+ law. Back in 2021, the country’s parliament passed a law forbidding the dissemination of content...
