French distributor Memento has acquired the distribution rights to the star-studded upcoming film The Entertainment System Is Down from director Ruben Östlund (Triangle of Sadness, The Square) for France.

The film is shooting in Budapest after production started in January.

A24 has already scooped US rights, Lionsgate Films for the UK, and Sf Studios has Nordic distribution rights.

Mikey Madison has set her first movie after winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for Anora in March (and passing on a role in Shawn Levy's Star Wars: Starfighter). She will star alongside Kirsten Dunst in Reptilia, an indie thriller feature from director Alejandro Landes Echavarría (Monos). Fargo wrapped up with its final season last year, and the show has seen many movie and TV veterans come and go through its five-season run. One of the stars from the first and second seasons of Fargo was Allison Tolman, famed for her role as Molly Solverson. Unlike many other TV shows, Fargo brings in a mostly new cast each season to tell a new story, with names like Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Hamm, and Jason Schwartzman all coming and going over the years. Steve Buscemi and Daniel Brühl are set to attend Slano Film Days, which will focus on the work of actors this year. The festival, which was set up two years ago by former Sarajevo Film Festival chief Miro Purivatra, runs June 17-21 in Slano, Croatia. Marking the directorial debut of writer and editor Stephanie Ahn, “Bedford Park” began production on April 14 in New Jersey.

Exclusive: Screenwriter Marcus Hinchey has signed with Theresa Kang’s Blue Marble Management for representation across film, television, and all media.

Hinchey most recently worked on the Tom McCarthy-directed film Stillwater, starring Matt Damon and Camille Cottin, which premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.

His previous credits include an adaptation of the This American Life episode, “Heretics”. The film, titled Come Sunday, was developed with Jonathan Demme and directed by Joshua Marston, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Martin Sheen and Lakeith Stanfield. The film premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and was released on Netflix.

He co-wrote and co-produced 2010’s All Good Things, inspired by the case of Robert Durst, starring Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst and Frank Langella. The film led to the reopening of the murder case against Durst, later documented on the Emmy-winning HBO series The Jinx.

A feature film adaptation of Leslye Headland’s stage play Cult of Love is in development.

Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum are set to produce the feature adaptation of the play under their Gloria Sanchez Productions banner. Headland is set to adapt the screenplay and direct.

The play, which ran on Broadway from November 2024 through January 2025, focuses on the “complex sin of pride” as a family returns to their parents house for Christmas. The production, which was well-reviewed by critics, ran at the Second Stage’s Hayes Theater, with a cast including Shailene Woodley, Zachary Quinto and Barbie Ferreira. Casting for the film will be announced at a later date.

Ferrell and Elbaum previously produced Headland’s Bachelorette, starring Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan, and her film, Sleeping with Other People, starring Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie. Headland was also the creator and showrunner on the Disney+ Star Wars series The Acolyte.

An amendment to the constitution passed on Monday by the Hungarian parliament codifies a law passed in March that made it an offense to hold or attend events that violate Hungary’s “child protection” legislation, which prohibits the “depiction or promotion” of homosexuality to minors under 18.

The Hungarian government will use measures to enforce the ban including the use of facial recognition software to identify those attending LGBTQ+ public events — such as Budapest Pride — and infractions can come with fines of up to 200,000 Hungarian forints ($546).
