Jack Black & Paul Rudd to Lead Reboot of Cult Classic 90s Horror Movie Anaconda
Image
The cheesy cult classic horror movie Anaconda is getting a new, very different installment courtesy of Columbia Pictures. A new outing in the beloved creature feature franchise is now in the works, with comedic icons Jack Black and Paul Rudd in talks to star in what sounds like a much more meta-approach to the material. Black and Rudd are reportedly in early talks to lead the project, which is described as a reimagining of the original 1997 adventure horror flick starring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, and Jon Voight that follows a documentary film crew who head off into the Amazon rainforest and quickly find themselves being hunted by a giant anaconda.

In this reimagining, the story will follow a group of friends facing a midlife crisis who attempt to remake their favorite movie from their youth. According to sources (via THR), they too will head to the rainforest, only to find...

Hard Target Is Based On One Of The Most Ripped-Off Movies Ever Made
Image
August isn't especially famous for its great movies. As months go, the eighth one on the calendar has often been a bit of a wasteland for Hollywood, as blockbusters peter off, kids have a lot less free time and money, and studio executives need to find somewhere to dump their proverbial dead bodies.

If you want a good example, you can pretty much throw a dart at any year after "Jaws" popularized the concept of summer blockbuster season. For example, let's take a look at 1993. 30 years ago, August was a month for dreck comedies like "Son of the Pink Panther," family film misfires like "Father Hood" and "Surf Ninjas," and the weird-ass "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday."

But then again, there are exceptions to every rule. There were also a few excellent motion pictures in August 1993. The increasingly timeless classic "The Fugitive" came out that month, along with...

John Woo’s Hard Target turns 30: Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Best Movie?
Image
The early nineties were arguably the heyday of brawny action. Arnold Schwarzenegger was the world’s biggest star, thanks to Total Recall and Terminator 2. Sylvester Stallone was just a little behind him with Cliffhanger and Demolition Man, but the lower-tier action stars were starting to catch up. Steven Seagal had a string of hits and was briefly about to hit the big time with Under Siege. At the same time, the Muscles from Brussels was finding his way into bigger studio fare and teamed up with arguably the greatest action director of all time for one of his best movies – Hard Target, which is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its release.

Jump back to 1991, when Jean-Claude Van Damme had two movies that broke through at the North American box office. First up, in January of that year, was Lionheart, which carried a low budget but made $22 million for Universal.

‘The Accursed’ DVD Review
Image
Stars: Jena Carpenter, Yancy Butler, Melora Walters, George Harrison Xanthis, Izabela Vidovic, Maiara Walsh, Goran Visnjic, Miraj Grbic, Ian Fisher, Alla Tumanian | Written and Directed by Kathryn Michelle, Elizabeta Vidovic

The Accursed opens with a text crawling across the screen telling us about groups of Croatian women who banded together into groups or Sisterhoods, of three to harness the elements. And how all of them moved to the USA and prospered, except for one such trio. I’m sure you can guess who this film is about. And probably how it all ends up for that matter.

After emigrating to America Aishe (Jena Carpenter; The Hatred) catches Hana with her husband. In the ensuing chaos, Hana kills Aishe before she can complete an epic curse on her and her family. Which means that Nadia has to cut off Hana’s hand and bury Aishe with it over her mouth to...

The Accursed (2022)
Yancy Butler Must Battle Evil in Horror 'The Accursed' Official Trailer
The Accursed (2022)
"If I would've known, I never would've come here." Gravitas Ventures has unveiled the trailer for an indie horror film titled The Accursed, also known as Severed Silence, from writers / filmmakers Elizabeta Vidovic and Kathryn Michelle, both making their feature directorial debut with this film. It opens in a few more weeks, available to watch on VOD anywhere. Yancy Butler stars as a woman who has spent twenty years suppressing and fighting off a maleficent curse that was placed upon her bloodline. Then one day a family member knowingly releases it, forcing her to kill or to be killed. The cast includes Izabela Vidovic, Goran Visnjic, Maiara Walsh, George Harrison Xanthis, and Melora Walters. Unfortunately this does not look good at all. Only thing I'm wondering is what's in the vines moving all on their own. Strange. Here's the trailer (+ poster) for Elizabeta Vidovic & Kathryn Michelle's The Accursed, from YouTube...

Q&a with Initiation Director/Co-Writer John Berardo
Image
A college campus becomes the hunting ground for a masked murderer in John Berardo's Initiation, and with the new murder mystery now playing in theaters and available On Demand and Digital, we caught up with Berardo in a new Q&a feature to discuss taking a unique approach to the slasher subgenre, working with a talented cast (including Yancy Butler and Lochlyn Munro), and the self-reflective nature of the killer's mask in Initiation.

Thanks for taking the time to answer questions for us, John, and congratulations on your new movie, Initiation! What sparked the idea for Initiation, and how long did it take you, Brian Frager, and Lindsay Lavanchy to write the script?

John Berardo: Thank you for promoting the movie! We're all so excited, it’s been a long time coming. The evolution of the idea and script happened in many different stages throughout the years. The initial...

Strange Murders on Campus in Social Media Horror 'Initiation' Trailer
John Berardo
"If this were to spiral out of control..." Saban Films has released an official US trailer for the indie horror Initiation, the latest from director John Berardo (also of The Labyrinth). This premiered at the Sitges & Screamfest Film Festivals last fall, and it will be arriving on VOD this May. Whiton University unravels the night a star-athlete is found murdered in his dorm during pledge week, kicking off a spree of social media slayings that force the students to uncover the truth behind the school's hidden secrets and the horrifying meaning of an exclamation point. What does it all mean, Basil?! Lindsay Lavanchy (who also co-wrote the script) co-stars with Jon Huertas, Isabella Gomez, Froy Gutierrez, Gattlin Griffith, Patrick Walker, Bart Johnson, Shireen Lai, Kent Faulcon, Yancy Butler and Lochlyn Munro. This looks like some crazy campus serial killer horror, not so much any commentary on university culture. Check it out.

‘Emerald Run’ Review
David Chokachi
Stars: David Chokachi, John Schneider, Steven Williams, Michael Pare, Vernon Wells, Chris Mulkey, Yancy Butler, Angela Gots | Written by Anthony Caruso, Marialisa Caruso | Directed by Eric Etebari

Drug smuggling is a topic that has been covered by TV and film over and over. Some of the most well known include Traffic, Blow and Scarface. Emerald Run though does not cover the trafficking of drugs though, it’s the first movie I have seen that covers the trafficking of emeralds. I mention the drug smuggling movie because this by all intents and purposes is exactly that. Except for the fact that the ‘drugs’ are emeralds, everything else hits the same notes as the movies in that sub-genre.

We see a desperate man (David Chokachi) get involved in a plan to smuggle emeralds across the Mexican border. He believes he has no choice and needs the money to save his daughters life.

David Chokachi in Emerald Run (2020)
‘Emerald Run’: Film Review
David Chokachi in Emerald Run (2020)
“Emerald Run” is one of the weirdest hodgepodges to make its way to theater screens and digital platforms in quite some time. Unfortunately, oddness is just about the only thing this muddled little indie has going for it. Despite the game efforts of lead actor David Chokachi and attractive lensing by Dp Michael Caradonna, the film — directed by Eric Etebari from a script credited to Anthony and Mariuccia Caruso — somehow manages to transition from anodyne desert noir thriller to heavy-handed faith-based melodrama without ever generating sufficient interest to be credible or compelling.

Chokachi plays John Thomas, an unemployed family man who’s understandably anxious about his teenage daughter’s medical condition — some hard-to-diagnose disease is making her life a living hell — and increasingly desperate to find a way to cover mounting medical bills. Anna (Yancy Butler), his devoutly Catholic wife, feels frequent mass attendance and some comforting words from their...

Midnighters (2017)
After unveiling its first lineup of feature film offerings last month, the SXSW Film Festival is rolling out more additions to its 2020 program. The annual Texas festival has already announced its features and episodic premieres, and now those picks are joined by Midnighters, Festival Favorites, Shorts, and Special Events, plus late-addition features and the full list of Episodic Pilot Competition shows.

This year’s program has 135 Feature Films, including 99 world premieres, nine North American premieres, five U.S. Premieres, 75 films from first-time filmmakers, and 119 short films. The lineup also features music videos, episodic premieres, pilots, special events, and Vr projects.

Midnighters (2017)
Emily Mortimer’s ‘Relic,’ Ella Balinska’s ‘Run Sweetheart Run’ Selected for SXSW Midnighter Section
Midnighters (2017)
The SXSW festival has announced its program for the Midnighters, Festival Favorites, Shorts, Special Events, Episodic Pilot Competition, and late addition Features for its 2020 film festival.

This year’s program has 135 feature films, including 99 world premieres, 9 North American premieres, 5 U.S. premieres, and 75 films from first-time filmmakers. The SXSW Midnighters section is a favorite for festival attendees who like the weird, electric and terrifying selections. It includes dark comedies, thrillers and slasher horror.

“Programming the Midnighters section this year felt especially invigorating,” Jarod Neece, SXSW Senior Film Programmer, said. “The filmmaking teams, while particularly diverse, all seem to be using their films as a cathartic lens to view the modern-day world. One trend we noticed was the presence of a strong female protagonist fighting off everything from hordes of zombies, bad dates, creepy rideshare drivers and supernatural forces. As always, genre filmmaking can be found throughout the SXSW program, and...

Roger Corman’s Death Race 2050 Shows Off Road Kill Carnage in Red Band Trailer
50 points for running over seniors! Now that’s bloody fun.

Legendary filmmaker Roger Corman produced a new re-imagined Grindhouse-style Death Race 2050, starring Manu Bennett and Malcom McDowell.

In this high-octane race, a corporate government devised a way to maintain population control in futuristic America in the year 2050 by having a crew of violent drivers competing in a cross-country road race. As the drivers compete for the crown, they score extra points for running innocent people and killing each other on the path. And the crowds will love it.

The reigning champion and fan favorite, Frankenstein (Bennett), who’s half-man and half-machine, wants to take the crown, but his rebel spy co-pilot threatens his legacy.

The rest of the cast features Burt Grinstead, Marci Miller, Folake Olowofoyeku, Anessa Ramsey, Yancy Butler and Charlie Farrell. G.J. Echternkamp directed the film from the screenplay he co-wrote with Matt Yamashita.

Death Race 2050 will be available on Blu-ray,...

Death Race 2050 Red Band Trailer Is Sexy, Violent and Covered in Blood
Manu Bennett, Folake Olowofoyeku, Marci Miller, and Burt Grinstead in Death Race 2050 (2017)
Back in October, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment debuted the Death Race 2050 trailer, which offered our first look at the colorful characters featured in this gruesome race. There is only so much that can be shown in a regular trailer, so today, the studio has unleashed an insane red band trailer, that offers a better look at the gruesome carnage, along with some R-rated language and brief female (non-frontal) nudity. Those under the age of 18 shouldn't be watching the video below, but for those who are of age, this trailer will take you on quite a ride.

Death Race 2050 Trailer: Roger Corman is Back with a Low-Budget Sequel to His Cult Classic
Roger Corman, the legendary producer who has over 400 credits to his name and mentored directors like James Cameron, Joe Dante, and dozens of others, is back with a sequel to Death Race 2000, the cult classic he produced back in 1975. This one's called Death Race 2050, and as you might expect, it takes place fifty years later but retains the premise of the original: there's a race, and drivers get points for taking out pedestrians (and bonus points for wiping out the elderly). The original is a fun piece of satire that was perfect for its time, but I'm not quite sure if that sort of skuzzy charm will still be in tact in a version made in 2016.

(Note: this appears to be a direct sequel to the '75 original, which means it probably ignores the events of the Death Race remakes.)
