War of the Worlds: Extinction is a followup to The Asylum’s 2021 film War of the Worlds: Annihilation, but in the opening montage, however, the film flips the script entirely, revealing that rather than Earth being invaded it was us doing the invading, attacking and trying to colonize the planet Emios after we made Earth uninhabitable.

Almost immediately after that montage, we see the one returning character, General Skuller leading his troops against the Earth forces, apparently in defiance of orders to stand down and welcome what are referred to as refugees from Earth. Any chance of that happening vanishes when he sees his daughter vaporized by an enemy craft while trying to lead some of those refugees to safety.

Cameron Crowe's bafflingly convoluted yet intriguing "Vanilla Sky" opens with affluent businessman David Aames (Tom Cruise) in prison. Donning a prosthetic mask to hide his supposed facial disfigurement, David is initially reluctant to open up to court psychologist Dr. Curtis McCabe (Kurt Russell), only to end up recounting the events that led up to his arrest and confinement in prison. The narrative structure of the film unwinds like a labyrinth with no exits, mirroring David's inexplicable brush with strange visions that overlap and shift around to create unreliable memories -- that is, until the last 10 minutes introduces a twist that renders everything crystal clear.

Lucid dreams and cryonic suspensions emerge as a part of David's reality, revealing that a chunk of his experiences are products of his muddled subconscious, including McCabe, whose insistent proclamations of being "real" start to feel hollow with every step David takes.

He quickly became an attraction in the media and appeared in several commercials and TV shows. In 1997, he appeared in a TV show alongside one of America’s top models at the time, Cindy Crawford. Back in 1990, director Joel Schumacher teamed with screenwriter Peter Filardi to bring us the psychological horror film Flatliners, a movie that was memorable enough to receive a forgettable reboot in 2017. Filardi recently regained the rights to his original screenplay – and Deadline reports that he has given author J.D. Barker the chance to write a novel called Flatliners Resurrection, which is based on Filardi’s script but puts a new twist on the concept.

The film has the following synopsis: Seeking answers about the afterlife, Chicago medical student Nelson persuades his fellow pupils to help him end his life, and then resuscitate him in the nick of time. Atheist David, playboy Joe, and troubled Rachel also journey into the unknown, looking for meaning in their own lives. As the experiments become more perilous, each is forced to contend with the paranormal consequences of trespassing on the other side.

In the wake of the original 1990 movie and the largely forgotten 2017 remake, the Flatliners saga will continue with Flatliners Resurrection, a new novel that’s currently in the works.

According to Deadline’s exclusive report this morning, the upcoming novel will be penned by J.D. Barker (Dracul), and it puts a fresh twist on the original Flatliners screenplay.

Deadline explains, “The original [movie] was released by Columbia, but Barker said that scribe Peter Filardi got back the rights to his original script, and the author swayed the scribe with a twist to the original tale that takes the reanimation tale down a different road than the original or a later remake. The novel is based on that script, not the movie, and Intellectual Property Group’s Joel Gotler will broker both the publishing and screen rights.”

“We’re thrilled to have J.D. Barker on board for this project,” said Filardi.

Following recent star turns in Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone But You, Richard Linklater's Hit Man, and buzzy summer disaster movie blockbuster Twisters, it would be fair to say that Glen Powell is very hot right now. But he could be about to get hotter — quite literally. In a recent interview with CNBC posted to the broadcaster's YouTube channel, Imagine Entertainment co-founder Brian Grazer said not once, but twice, that a remake of Ron Howard's 1991 firefighting classic Backdraft is in the works, with none other than Powell set to star. Now, as we say, some salt-pinching is required at this stage because neither Powell nor original Backdraft director Howard are on the record as saying this film is happening just yet.

Ron Howard is reportedly developing a sequel to the 1991 hit film Backdraft, and Glen Powell is said to be considering joining up.

Here’s an interesting story which suggests that Backdraft, the 1991 firefighting drama may be getting a sequel. Well, another sequel that is given that Universal Pictures Home Entertainment released a direct-to-video follow-up in 2019. Given that Ron Howard’s production company are involved this time though, we’d imagine that should this come to fruition, this one would be a proper bells and whistles sequel with a sizeable budget and lots of movie stars.

But what about the hyper-specific category of special effects shows? Live stunt shows don't count, because those are too well-known. Instead, we're talking about more obscure attractions, the ones people might wander into on a whim between waiting in line for the park's ultra-popular rides.

In these special effects shows, most of which have since been closed down or revamped into other attractions altogether, park visitors were essentially herded into a controlled area to witness some kind of bombastic demonstration. You know, in some film circles, Ron Howard gets a lot of guff for being a "boring" director. But I think that's unfair. Sure, Howard has some duds in his directorial career, but he also has some home runs. "Apollo 13" is an exciting "based on a true story" flick, "The Paper" is a nifty look at the world of newspaper journalism, the underrated "Cinderella Man" is a stellar boxing drama. And then there's "Backdraft," Howard's 1991 thriller about firefighters. To be fair, the "Backdraft" script is a bit weak, but the film itself is action-packed and boasts some incredible visual effects that use real fire. The film also has a killer cast, including Robert De Niro, the late, great Donald Sutherland, Jennifer Jason Leigh, J.T. Walsh, Scott Glenn, and, of course, Kurt Russell. 

Russell plays Lieutenant Stephen "Bull" McCaffrey, a really cool guy who is also a damn good firefighter.

William Baldwin starred in three projects with Donald Sutherland, the Emmy- and honorary Oscar-winning actor who died Thursday at age 88 after a seven-decade Hollywood career.

Below, he shares his thoughts on Sutherland, his co-star in Ron Howard’s Backdraft, Universal’s Virus and the ABC series Dirty, Sexy, Money.

I have the honor and pleasure of working with Donald Sutherland on three occasions.

The first was when he so brilliantly portrayed the deranged, psychopathic arsonist Ronald in Ron Howard’s Backdraft.

The second was 20 weeks on the Universal sci-fi thriller Virus with Jamie Lee Curtis.

The third, and by far my favorite, was when he played my father and patriarch of the Darling family, Tripp Darling, on the short-lived but wonderful ABC hit Dirty, Sexy, Money.

Donald was a complex, complicated and quirky man in the most delicious way. He had a gentle, childlike boyish streak in him that I absolutely adored.

Billy Ray called him “a prince.” Kiefer Sutherland said his dad was “never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly.” Horror filmmaker Joe Russo simply wrote, “Rip to the Goat.”

Hollywood is sounding off on the death of Donald Sutherland, the 2017 recipient of an Honorary Oscar who died Thursday in Miami at 88. Stars such as Michael Douglass and Rachel Zegler have responded to the news as well.

Sutherland played key parts in films like Ordinary People (1980), Pride & Prejudice (2005) and The Hunger Games quartet of films based on the books by Suzanne Collins. He was also a staple of Robert Altman’s Mash in the role of Hawkeye Pierce.

“I never had the honor of knowing him personally, but it was the honor of a lifetime to follow in his footsteps,” Tom Blyth, who portrayed a younger version of Sutherland’s Hunger Games character in a prequel film, wrote on Instagram.

Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man receives less fan love than these superheroes in the MCU. When fans were asked to poll on the best superhero trilogy in the MCU, most of them chose Chris Evans’ Captain America trilogy and James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. While the first Iron Man film remains one of the best films in the 30 billion-dollar franchise, Downey Jr.’s third film had unfavorable opinions, which made it many people’s third favorite trilogy.

However, the critical and audience opinions are different cases from the box office numbers of these films. Interestingly, the controversial Iron Man 3 had box office earnings higher than any of the Captain America movies or the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

The year 1990 was a pretty decent time for a trip to the movies, especially if you’re a self confessed gore-hound, like yours truly. There’s nothing better than sitting down in a packed movie theater, or even at home with the pet cat or a similarly cherished human, to watch some carnage on the screen. Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis have issued an apology after writing letters in support of Danny Masterson ahead of his sentencing in his Los Angeles rape case.

Kutcher and Kunis took to Instagram on Saturday and posted a video and apologized, saying it was never their intent to undermine the testimony of the victims or re-traumatize them in any way with the letters they submitted to Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo.

“We are aware of the pain that has been caused by the character letters on behalf of Danny Masterson,” Kutcher said in the video, to which Kunis followed with, “We support victims. We have done this historically through our work and will continue to do so in the future.”

The judge overseeing Danny Masterson’s criminal case handed the actor the maximum allowable sentence, resisting calls from nearly 50 of his family, friends and colleagues to allow him to serve his prison term concurrently rather than consecutively.

Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Kurtwood Smith, Debra Jo Rupp and David Trainer — all of whom worked alongside Masterson in That ’70s Show — wrote to the court as character references urging Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo to offer Masterson leniency in letters dated between July and August, after he was convicted in May. They mostly touted his commitment to discouraging the use of drugs.

Masterson on Thursday was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison. Though she had the choice to restrict his sentence to 15 years to life, Olmedo declined to do so.

Masterson will be eligible for parole in roughly 25 years, when he’s 72 years old.

When allegations of rape against Danny Masterson cost him his TV show and Hollywood career in 2017, he bought land in the Santa Ynez Valley (setting for the movie “Sideways”) and started a vineyard, toiling “long days on the land” to make it a profitable venture, his wife Bijou Phillips said.

Phillips, the “Almost Famous” and horror film actress who has been married to Masterson since 2011, made the disclosure in a letter to Judge Charlaine Olmedo, one of many that was included in a defense memorandum asking for sentencing leniency.

Despite heartfelt pleas from Masterson’s “That ’70s Show” castmates Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis and others, Olmedo sentenced Masterson to the maximum 30 years to life in prison this week.

Journalist Tony Ortega published excerpts from the letters to the judge in the case on his Substack blog The Underground Bunker.

Recalling their first time meeting in 1998, Kutcher wrote of Masterson in his letter, “He instantly became a friend, dedicated co worker, and role model to me. And has remained as such for 25 years.”

Later in the letter, the actor wrote, “While I’m aware that the judgement has been cast as guilty on two counts of rape by force and the victims have a great desire for justice.

Suspected serial killer Rex Heuermann had some surprising acquaintances. It turns out that actor Billy Baldwin, also known as William Baldwin, went to high school with him.

Billy, the second youngest of the four Baldwin brothers, got on Twitter the morning of Heuermann’s arrest to share that he went to the same high school as the then-suspected Gilgo Beach murderer.

“Woke up this morning to learn that the Gilgo Beach serial killer suspect was my high school classmate Rex Heuermann,” Billy wrote.

He then wrote the name of the high school they attended together, Berner High School in Massapequa, New York, and the year they graduated in 1981.
