Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Tom Cruise praises Nicole Kidman on Eyes Wide Shut, cites Jack Nicholson’s influence on him
Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Tom Cruise has worked with some of the greatest directors ever. But at the top might be Stanley Kubrick, who directed Cruise and then-wife Nicole Kidman in his final film, 1999’s Eyes Wide Shut. And despite a nasty divorce, Cruise still has wonderful things to say about Kidman – along with some other notable Hollywood luminaries.

Cruise recently spoke to Sight and Sound (via Deadline) for the May issue, wherein he recalled meeting Kubrick and ensuring that Kidman get the role of his wife in Eyes Wide Shut. “I flew out to his house and I landed in his backyard. I read the script the day before and we spent the day talking about it. I knew all of his films. I spoke to [The Color of Money director Martin] Scorsese about him and [The Firm director/Eyes Wide Shut co-star] Sydney Pollack… so I knew what he did and how he worked. Then...

“I was scared as f*ck”: Mel Gibson and Josh Brolin Kept Shia Labeouf Alive With Their Crucial Support
Image
Onscreen, Shia Labeouf might as well be accepted by the majority to be one of the finest actors to have come out of Hollywood’s entertainment industry, going to whatever extremes required just to get his performances right. But his behind-the-scenes life hasn’t been all that easy, and he credits stars like Mel Gibson and Josh Brolin for lending him support through the same.

As is widely known, like many others, Labeouf also struggled with substance abuse issues, specifically alcohol, and has pretty much battled back from the brink to restore his career as a movie star. And the ones helping him beat the booze and keeping him alive and away from giving up seem to be none other than Gibson, Brolin, and Sean Penn, as he himself admitted.

Shia Labeouf credits Mel Gibson, Josh Brolin, and Sean Penn for his sobriety (L-r) Mel Gibson, Josh Brolin, and Sean Penn.

Shia Labeouf Lived in Central Park Horse Basin During ‘Orphans’ Prep
Image
Almost nothing about Shia Labeouf’s involvement with Orphans went the right way. In 2013, the actor was slated to make his Broadway debut with a lead role in the play, but ultimately exited the project due to “creative differences.” It ultimately boiled down to an internal feud with Alec Baldwin, who entered the production as a replacement for Al Pacino. Part of their sparring was related to process, but the other part had to do with Labeouf being in an unsettled headspace as someone who was living in Central Park.

Hilaria Baldwin Says Husband Alec Baldwin Was ‘On The Phone’ While She Was Giving Birth, Threatened To Divorce Him
Image
Hilaria Baldwin threatened a divorce during a tumultuous period in her marriage.

In her upcoming memoir, Manual Not Included, Hilaria details a time when her relationship with husband, actor Alec Baldwin, was “rocky” and they almost ended it.

The fractures in their marriage occurred before and after their second child, Rafael, arrived in June 2015.

“I was so focused on how I thought things should be, and Alec was so set in his ways. Neither one of us would budge.”

At the beginning of their marriage, Hilaria actually admitted she didn’t understand what a prenup was.

Many of their issues revolved around Alec’s demanding work schedule and their differing views on work-life balance. Hilaria was home alone with their daughter, Carmen, and their dogs while Alec was traveling for long periods for work. She, desiring more family time, found it challenging when Alec’s work took precedence, even during the birth of their son.

‘Glengarry Glen Ross,’ ‘Fifty Shades,’ and ‘Fear’ Director James Foley Dead at 71
Image
Acclaimed director James Foley has died at age 71. A representative for the Foley family confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the filmmaker passed “peacefully in his sleep earlier this week following a years-long struggle with brain cancer.” It is unclear when Foley was diagnosed and for how long his illness was.

Foley most famously helmed the 1992 film adaptation of David Mamet’s “Glengarry Glen Ross,” starring Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, and Kevin Spacey. Foley would later reunite with Spacey for 12 episodes of Netflix’s first-ever series, “House of Cards.”

Foley made his feature directorial debut in 1984 with “Reckless” starring Daryl Hannah and Aidan Quinn. He was best known for working in the domestic thriller genre, despite defying filmmaker labels. His features include directing Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon in “Fear,” Halle Berry and Bruce Willis in “Perfect Stranger,” and “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed...

James Foley, ‘Glengarry Glen Ross,’ ‘House of Cards’ Director, Dies at 71
Image
James Foley, director of films including “Glengarry Glen Ross,” “At Close Range” and “Fear,” died at his home in Los Angeles earlier this week.

He died after a year-long struggle with brain cancer, according to a rep.

Foley worked with stars including Sean Penn, Madonna, Al Pacino and Halle Berry, and specialized in atmosphere-soaked, noir-adjacent stories.

His first feature was 1984’s musical romance drama “Reckless,” starring Daryl Hannah and Aidan Quinn. Foley followed that with “At Close Range,” starring Penn and Christopher Walken in a neo-noir that included the Madonna song “Live to Tell.” Madonna was married to Penn at the time, and Foley went on to work with Madonna several times, directing music videos and her feature “Who’s That Girl.” The screwball comedy bombed, and Foley told FilmInk, “It was a major life experience. That first failure is so shocking.”

“Glengarry Glen Ross” was one of his most high-profile films,...

Foley’s next movie was At Close Range, the 1986 crime thriller toplined by Sean Penn and Christopher Walken, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and was nominated for its Golden Bear prize.

James Foley, the Brooklyn-born filmmaker who collaborated with A-list stars like Al Pacino, Sean Penn, Madonna and Mark Wahlberg across a 30-plus-year career in film, TV and music videos, has died. He was 71.

Born on Dec. 28, 1953, and raised in New York, Foley graduated from high school and went on to study film at New York University followed by USC in Los Angeles. Hilaria Baldwin Now Claims Her Accent Changes Because She Has Adhd
Image
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hilaria Baldwin says that her Adhd and dyslexia may have led to her biggest scandal.

Several years ago, Hilaria’s accent became a hot topic of discussion.

This was not a case of people bullying a foreign-born American. Because she is American, and was accused of altering her accent (and name) in order to pretend to be from another country.

Though this is not the most painful source of backlash for her family, it clearly stings. And she’s talking about it.

Though it wasn’t necessarily the franchise that she wanted, ‘The Baldwins’ has made Hilaria Baldwin into a reality TV star. Of sorts. (Image Credit: TLC) Hilaria Baldwin is not from Spain

In 2020, social media users called out Hilaria Baldwin, accusing her of faking an accent to impersonate someone born in Spain.

The reality is that Hilaria was born as Hillary Lynn Hayward-Thomas.

Alec Baldwin's Controversial Western Receives Encouraging Reaction From Moviegoers Despite Poor Critical Reception
Image
There are some projects that simply can't be separated from the tragedy surrounding them. Whether it's a legal battle, a feud, or even a death, the project is forever tied to its controversy.

One of those cases is Alec Baldwin's latest release, the controversial Western Rust. The movie had been long in development, as it started filming in October 2021, but everything was halted when Baldwin accidentally fired a live round from a prop gun on the set, injuring the director and killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The film's journey to the theater was long, and after an unimpressive reception from the critics, Rust received more encouraging reactions from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes.

Rust officially premiered in theaters on May 2 and debuted with a low score of 56% from the critics on the review-aggregator website. That automatically led to a "rotten" badge. As more reviews came in,Rust's score further dropped...

Alec Baldwin's Controversial Western 'Rust' Earns Abysmal Box Office Debut
Image
The history surrounding the movie Rust has put a stain on it after more than three years since an incident on set ended with a filmmaker tragically losing their life. The film first made news in 2021 after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed following the accidental discharge of a prop gun that the film's star, Alec Baldwin, believed was loaded with blank rounds. In the years since the tragic accident, Rust has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, and that continues with the movie's arrival in cinemas. Rust was finally released over the weekend, but the film's box office haul indicates that many people chose not to show up.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Rust grossed a mere $25,000 during its opening weekend while showing in 115 theaters. The film ranked 27th on the box office chart, behind the documentary Secret Mall Apartment, which managed to gross $29,750 on just 39 screens. In Rust's defense,...

Alec Baldwin's Controversial Rust Finally Arrived At The Box Office – And It Was Totally Ignored
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

More than three years after the on-set incident that put the movie on the world's radar, Alec Baldwin's "Rust" has arrived. In late 2021, during the initial phase of production, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed when Baldwin accidentally discharged a prop gun that he thought only had blank rounds in it. It's a tragedy that has reshaped the conversation about on-set safety regarding firearms. But in part because Hutchins' family is benefiting from the proceeds generated by the movie, it has officially been released both in theaters and on digital marketplaces.

Despite the high-profile nature of everything surrounding the production of the film, its theatrical debut was all but ignored. "Rust" made just $25,000 during its opening weekend, playing on 115 screens. That put it at 27th on the domestic charts, just behind the documentary "Secret Mall Apartment," which made $29,750 on just 39 screens,...

Marvel’s Thunderbolts Leads U.S. Box Office With $76M Opening Weekend
Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Olga Kurylenko, Sebastian Stan, Hannah John-Kamen, and Florence Pugh in Thunderbolts* (2025)
Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* opened in first place at the North American box office, earning $76 million in ticket sales over its debut weekend. The film’s global total stands at an estimated $162 million. While the domestic figure trails Marvel’s highest-grossing releases, it signals a promising start for a title built around characters who have remained outside the franchise’s primary spotlight.

Directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts* features Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan alongside David Harbour and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The story follows a group of morally conflicted figures who are brought together for high-risk missions. With production costs around $180 million, the film’s performance marks a critical test for Disney’s long-term plans for its superhero properties.

Initial reactions from audiences have been strong. The film holds a 95 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and received an “A-” from CinemaScore polling. These figures contrast with a more divided critical reception, with...

'I Would've Loved to': Alec Baldwin Reveals Why Tim Burton Didn't Cast Him as Batman
Image
Michael Keaton famously starred as the Dark Knight in both of Tim Burton's Batman movies, and his performance remains a favorite for many fans of the DC character. The role could have gone to the actor's Beetlejuice co-star, Alec Baldwin, but Burton didn't feel he was right for the role.

Baldwin discussed the subject during a recent interview for his brother Stephen Baldwin's podcast One Bad Movie. He noted how his ex-wife, Kim Basinger, has a role as Vicki Vale in the original Batman film by Burton. Baldwin then explained that Basinger told him that she'd spoken with Burton about why he wound up casting Keaton as Bruce Wayne. This was said to be because Burton was looking for someone who'd make a more believable Bruce Wayne than Batman, and the director was having trouble imagining Baldwin such a troubled character.

"Well, back then, he said, he told my ex-wife,...

Alec Baldwin's Controversial Film Gets More Bad News at Box Office After Leaving Critics Unimpressed
Image
This weekend’s box office saw Thunderbolts*easily take the No. 1 spot with $76 million from 4,330 theaters. However, it was another story for Rust, the problematic film from actor and writer Alec Baldwin. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Rust, directed and co-written by Joel Souza, took in $25,000 in its debut weekend in limited release. The film had a budget of around $8 million.

The $25,000 total comes from just 115 theaters after the movie was finally released four years after its star, Baldwin, accidentally discharged a weapon on set that killed the film’s cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, and wounded Souza. Baldwin thought the weapon contained only blanks, but the chamber contained a live round of ammunition.

The Lawsuit was Ultimately Settled

A lawsuit followed the events, with Hutchins’ family settling and all charges being dropped against Baldwin. Baldwin paid a settlement to the cinematographer’s family, and Hutchins’ husband, Matthew Hutchins, was made an executive producer on the film.

‘Thunderbolts’ kicks major asterisk at box office; Alec Baldwin’s tragic ‘Rust’ goes bust

Update: Thunderbolts brought some boom to the box office, exceeding expectations with a weekend take of $76 million domestically to finish first. The new Marvel Cinematic Universe entries, which teamed up a group of misfits from previous films, was in line with other installments focusing on lesser-known heroes like 2021's Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings ($75 million) and Eternals ($71 million). Thunderbolts also tallied $86 million overseas for a total of $162 million nearly recouping its $180 million budget in three days. With reviews calling it "a return to form" for Marvel, an 88 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and an A-minus CinemaScore, Thunderbolts is in a strong position to jump-start the summer box office and tee up the McU's looming Phase 6.

Alec Baldwin’s ‘Rust’ Makes Just $25,000 From Limited Theatrical Release
Image
Four years after the on-set death of its cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, the independent western “Rust” received a limited theatrical release this weekend alongside a home release on video on-demand. But the film has gone largely ignored, grossing just $25,000 from 115 theaters.

“Rust” stars Baldwin as Harland Rust, a wanted outlaw who comes out of hiding to rescue his estranged grandson, who is sentenced to death for accidentally killing a rancher. Twenty-six reviews have been logged for the film on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 42% score.

In 2021, Hutchins was killed when Baldwin, who co-wrote and produced the film along with starring in it, accidentally discharged a gun he thought had blanks inside while rehearsing a scene. The live round struck Hutchins and also wounded director Joel Souza.

Prop armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison. Baldwin was also charged with involuntary manslaughter, but those charges were...

Image
The weekend box office is in, and Thunderbolts came in pretty much exactly where we predicted it would earlier this week, with $76 million. While this is a solid number, it can’t be denied that it’s on the low end for Marvel, with it roughly on par with how Shang-Chi and Eternals opened during those grim pandemic days. In fact, it was beaten by Captain America: Brave New World, which is being seen as something of a money loser, given its slow crawl to $200 million domestically, and only $414 million internationally, meaning it likely lost money. However, Thunderbolts may have an easier time breaking even, given the fact that it has a thriftier budget, and also scored a good A-minus CinemaScore rating, meaning that word of mouth is good.

One reason it might not have opened as big as other movies is the fact that Ryan Coogler’s Sinners has...

Box Office: ‘Thunderbolts*’ Flies to Solid $76M Opening, Alec Baldwin’s ‘Rust’ Flails
Image
A group of misfits and outsiders are making headlines at the box office after winning over audiences and critics in a major way.

Marvel and Disney’s Thunderbolts* soared to the top of the domestic chart with an estimated domestic opening of $76 million from 4,330 theaters, slightly ahead of expectations for a superhero pic that features lesser-known characters. While Marvel and Disney would no doubt have liked north of $80 million, the biggest factor will be how the $180 million movie legs out.

Overseas, the star-studded ensemble pic led by Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan pulled in $86.1 million for a global start of $162.1 million; again, in line with expectations. The global Imax haul was a huge $20 million.

It drew impressive audience sentiment across the board, including boasting a glowing 95 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the third-highest score for a title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a tie with Spider-Man: Far From Home...

Alec Baldwin Explains Why He Prefers the Original Beetlejuice After Missing Out on Last Year's Sequel
Image
Alec Baldwin played a major part of the original Beetlejuice film, but he was not among the returning stars of last year's sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The actor did watch the film, however, and he's shared his thoughts, noting how he still prefers the original movie over the sequel.

Baldwin discussed Beetlejuice during a recent interview for the One Bad Movie podcast, hosted by brother Stephen Baldwin. Alec said that he saw the sequel in theaters twice at the request of his kids, who still had only seen video clips of the original film that he was in. Baldwin then spoke about how the sequel feels more "grim" compared to the "innocent" original. The actor was also not thrilled about director Tim Burton putting an "inconceivably gorgeous" woman like Monica Bellucci in dark makeup and stitches to portray the soul-sucking ghoul Delores, the ex-wife of Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton).

"I Don't Think Anyone Would Have Come Back...Without Their Blessing": How Rust Cinematographer's Family Revived Alec Baldwin Western Explained By Star
Image
After Alec Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed were criminally charged due to their involvement with the Rust shooting, the movie is now available to general audiences. The Western, which stars Baldwin as outlaw Harland Rust, was originally intended to be a small-scale production with a budget of under $10 million. Tragically, a devastating accident led to cinematographer Haylna Hutchins' death, after Baldwin's prop gun proved to hold live ammunition. Three years after the incident, the movie was officially released on May 2, despite initial speculation that it would never be finished.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns, Josh Hopkins (Wood Helm) explained exactly why the cast returned to the production. While Hutchins' death was extremely painful for everyone involved, the profits will go directly to her family. Hopkins stated that "her husband asked me to come back and finish this," which was his primary reason for returning. He believes that...

“They are a real turn-off for Hilaria”: It’s Hard to Ignore This Alleged Red Flag in Alec Baldwin’s Relationship With His Wife
Image
When it comes to love, laughter, and lasting marriage, Alec Baldwin and his wife Hilaria seem like the ultimate power couple. Until someone brings up baggy eyes! Yep, according to a spicy RadarOnline scoop, the 41-year-old yoga instructor is not vibing with her husband’s aging face, especially those puffy under-eyes.

Sources revealed that Hilaria Baldwin even compared her husband’s under-eyes to the cartoon character Droopy Dog. So now, the yoga queen, who’s no stranger to a little cosmetic “glow-up” herself, reportedly seems to want her Emmy-winning hubby to hit the plastic surgeon’s office Asap—for her sake, if not his.

Alec Baldwin’s wife wants him to get rid of his puffy under-eyes

Aging is a natural part of life, but apparently, not everyone is on board—especially not Hilaria Baldwin. Word on the street, at least from RadarOnline sources, the 41-year-old yoga influencer reportedly wants...

Halyna Hutchins’ Mother & Sister Encourage You To See ‘Rust’
Image
Relatives of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer tragically killed on the Santa Fe set of Western Rust, have come out in support of the film, encouraging movie lovers to see it.

Olga Solovey, the Dp’s mother, said, “I watched my daughter’s stunning film twice. I was so happy for the success of my daughter because it was filmed so beautifully. I would want everybody to watch it because it was the dream of my daughter and she would want people to see it.”

Solovey continued, “I would want people to see the talent, the beauty, the success, and I’m just so immensely proud of [Halyna]. She had a very specific style of cinematography and she saw the world differently. She could see and capture how the sun sets and how animals behaved. She saw the beauty of it all. She could capture it. She could capture nature. I like the film.

Rust Review — Alec Baldwin’s Western is Quietly Moving, Haunting
Image
Four years after the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust, Alec Baldwin’s Western is finally releasing in theaters. Despite, or perhaps because of, the controversy surrounding it, this film will likely go under most people’s radar. It’s a surprisingly heartfelt Western about the bond between a young vagrant and an aging cowboy, beautifully shot and nicely paced. Still, it’s difficult to watch without the weight of its history looming over it.

Rust Review

Rust is, unfortunately, doomed to always be overshadowed by the tragic events of its production. In October 2021, Hutchins was killed after a live bullet was discharged from Baldwin’s prop gun. This horrifying accident came as a result of multiple catastrophic failures in the production process. The film now carries an unavoidable legacy of tragedy that colors every frame.

The story follows Lucas Hollister (Patrick Scott McDermott), a...

‘Rust’ Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins’ Family Toasts the ‘Stunning’ Film’s Theatrical Release: ‘Want Everybody to Watch It’
Image
The mother and sister of Halyna Hutchins – the late cinematographer who was fatally shot on-set during filming – have seen “Rust” and found it “stunning.” They encouraged audiences to go see film in Hutchins’ memory.

Olga Solovey, Hutchins’s mom, and Svetlana Zemko, her sister, toasted her final movie’s theatrical release. Solovey urged as many people to see it as possible to “remember her for as long as they can.”

“I watched my daughter’s stunning film twice. I was so happy for the success of my daughter because it was filmed so beautifully,” Solovey said. “I would want everybody to watch it because it was the dream of my daughter and she would want people to see it. I would want people to see the talent, the beauty, the success, and I’m just so immensely proud of her. She had a very specific style of cinematography and she saw the world differently.

'Rust' Stars Comment on the Polarizing Film Release and Honoring Halyna Hutchins
Image
The cast of the controversial Western film Rust has commented on the film's release after a difficult process to complete production after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was accidentally shot and killed on set in October 2021. In 2023, production resumed, and while some returned to finish their scenes, others had to be replaced. Among the new stars were Patrick Scott McDermott and Josh Hopkins, who replaced Brady Noon and Jensen Ackles, respectively, due to scheduling reasons. It was McDermott and Hopkins who shared their comments on completing the Alec Baldwin movie, which is now in cinemas.

In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, the actors opened up about finishing and releasing what's already a controversial movie. Even though Hutchins' family settled with production, and they're set to receive the film's eventual profits, the project has been met with divisive reactions from the public. Baldwin, as the actor who was manipulating the pistol containing a...

Alec Baldwin’s Tragedy-Stricken ‘Rust’ Debuts with a Subpar Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Rusthas become one of the most talked-about films in years due to the tragic events surrounding its filming. Four years after an accidental shooting left the film's cinematographer Halyna Hutchinsdead and director Joel Souza injured, the Western has finally been released courtesy of distributor Falling Forward Films. But viewers appear to be unmoved, as Rust's Rotten Tomatoes score is largely underwhelming.

At the time of this article's publication, Rust is sitting at a "rotten" critic's score of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 21 reviews. However, it should also be noted that the film currently has no audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, so there is a chance that audiences could end up liking it far more than the critics, as is the case with many films. The film is as "about as standard a Western as you can imagine, one that hits all the narrative beats and clichés expected of the genre,...

'Rust' Director Opens Up About Controversial Western & Alec Baldwin's Reality Show
Image
Rust director Joel Souza has shared his opinion of the TLC reality show The Baldwins, in which Alec Baldwin finds himself facing the cameras after the Rust shooting incident dramatically changed his life. Souza is not exactly friends with Baldwin today, and when asked if he saw The Baldwins when it premiered, the director candidly replied: "I think I was busy hitting myself in the face with a frying pan that night."

Souzais not enjoying the release of his latest film. Rust, the western thriller starring Baldwin, has finally seen the light of day, but the incident that took place during its production is still hard to process for most. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot in 2021 during a rehearsal in which Baldwin manipulated a pistol that contained a live round. After a dense judicial process, people were sent to jail, others had their charges dismissed, and production eventually resumed.

‘Rust’, Western With A Tragic Past, Honors Work Of Slain Cinematographer, Proceeds Will Go To Her Family – Specialty Preview
Image
Rust, the indie Western with a tragic backstory, is now out at at some 115 theaters through Falling Forward Films, as well as on PVOD. The release comes well over three years since the film’s cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed by a bullet from Alec Baldwin‘s gun on the New Mexico film set.

An on-again-off-again involuntary manslaughter criminal case against the producer and star was put to rest last December. Multiple civil suits related to the shooting remain in the courts in California and New Mexico. A jury found Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer for the production, guilty of involuntary manslaughter for the October 2021 incident and she was sentenced to 16 months in prison.

Amid all that, the movie itself has taken a back seat, until now. Deadline’s review calls the release “bittersweet” but notes “the exceptional cinematography of Hutchins, as well as Bianca Cline, who came in to film the remaining scenes.

After On-Set Tragedy and Controversial Release, Alec Baldwin's Western Gets Unfortunate Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Alec Baldwin's latest film, Rust, has just hit theaters. However, the film had been long in the making following the fatal shooting accident on set and the controversial release.

Rust has officially released in theaters on May 2, and it's already not a favorite. The Western, which was written and directed by Joel Souza, stars Baldwin in the leading role, besides his role as co-writer and producer. As Rust hit theaters, the movie debuted with an unfortunate score of 56% from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which makes the movie considered "rotten." After this debut score, the number has begun to sink lower.

Rust had its world premiere last year on Nov. 20, 2024, at the Camerimage Festival in Poland, but to smaller audiences. The movie's release at the festival was also controversial, as Hutchins' former cinematography peers were wondering if premiering the movie was the right thing. Now, the movie is officially...

Alec Baldwin's Controversial Western Movie Debuts With Middling Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Alec Baldwin is best known for his leading and supporting roles in a variety of genres, from comedy to drama, in both film and television. He's received a whopping 20 Emmy nominations for his work on the sitcoms Will & Grace, winning three for playing network executive Jack Donaghy on 30 Rock, and Donald Trump on the sketch comedy series, Saturday Night Live. Baldwin also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for playing a casino manager in the 2003 film, The Cooler.

Baldwin's film career began in 1988 with a series of roles in Beetlejuice, Working Girl, and Married to the Mob before playing Jack Ryan in The Hunt for Red October (1990). Baldwin has made brief, but memorable appearances in movies like Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), Along Came Polly (2004), The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), Blue Jasmine (2013), and the Mission: Impossible movies Rogue Nation (2015) and Fallout (2018). Now, Baldwin's controversial Western movie has finally been released.

‘Rust’ Review: Defined by Tragedy, Alec Baldwin’s Cursed Western Offers Halyna Hutchins’ Story a Small but Necessary Sense of Closure
Image
When cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was inadvertently shot and killed by a live round on the set of “Rust” in October of 2021, it seemed unfathomable to me that production would ever be completed — let alone that I would be tasked with reviewing the finished product one day.

“Twilight Zone: The Movie” and “The Crow” were both released in spite of similar tragedies, but that was before the internet had so thoroughly flattened every film into the context of its own creation. The horror took on a life of its own when second assistant camerawoman Sarah Jones was fatally struck by a freight train on the first day of filming “Midnight Rider” in February 2014, and the Facebook group that crew members started to oppose resuming the shoot had swelled to more than 10,000 members by April of that year.

And what happened on the set of “Rust” caused such an instant firestorm that...

Alec Baldwin's Controversial Western 'Rust' Gets Middling Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
It's no secret that Rust is one of the most controversial projects to get completed in recent memory due to the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. However, despite that fact, critics have weighed in on the final product, and it seems to be a heavily divisive entry in the Western genre. It's hard to separate the behind-the-scenes tragedy from what is on-screen, but thankfully, it seems Hutchins' work is getting the bulk of the praise despite mixed reviews.

As of this writing, Rust debuted with a 50% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes based on 20 reviews, which gives it a rotten label. The middling score is reflective of the deeply controversial nature of the film and everything surrounding it. Some critics were quick to point out the film's "bare-bones" plot, while others were impressed by the film's grim visual aesthetic. Meanwhile, MovieWeb's own review by Julian Roman praised Rust as...

Alec Baldwin Reveals He Wanted to Be Batman – And Why He Lost the Role to Michael Keaton
Image
Whether it was as Bruce Wayne or the Dark Knight himself, Michael Keaton owned the cape and cowl in Tim Burton’s Batman and Batman Returns. Even today, decades later, fans still argue in dimly lit forums about who the best Batman is. Sure, Affleck looked like he could bench press a bus, but let’s be completely honest—he was no Michael Keaton. But now, a recent interview has fans wondering if Alec Baldwin could have done a better job as Batman instead of Keaton. What many don’t realise is that Keaton almost didn’t get the gig. Warner Bros. was basically playing a game of Batman Tinder, swiping right on names like Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner, Charlie Sheen, Tom Selleck, Bill Murray, Harrison Ford, and Dennis Quaid before director Tim Burton swiped left on everyone and doubled down on Keaton as Batman. But guess who else wanted the role?...

‘Rust’ Is Both a Tribute and a Major Tragedy
Image
There is an alt-timeline in which Rust, writer-director Joel Souza’s pulpy and pathos-fueled Western, is just another tale of an outlaw in his autumn years. It’s simply the latest entry in a genre whose century-plus history is filled with similarly modest sagebrush epics. After a brief theatrical run, a slightly longer tenure on VOD and a lifetime of cable re-runs every Father’s Day, this frontier opus would trot off into the sunset as a footnote in Alec Baldwin’s post-30 Rock, pre-reality TV show career. You know,...

Kevin Costner Really Wanted The $200M Movie With His Idol That Offered Him ‘Limitless’ Money But Left It for Something Better
Image
When Kevin Costner chose not to appear on the much-acclaimed fifth and final season of Yellowstone, partially due to scheduling conflicts and largely to focus on his latest western, Horizon: An American Saga, hearts were broken. In doing so, the Oscar winner not only denounced the chance of encashing a hefty paycheck but also invested a significant amount of his own money to make the project see the light of day.

While the 70-year-old is no stranger to taking risks when it comes to pursuing his passion for western films, this is hardly the first time that he has chosen the creative freedom of the director’s seat over the lure of an eye-watering salary. In fact, in his prime, Costner left a lucrative opportunity to star with one of his idols – Sean Connery – in The Hunt for Red October that went on to gross over $200 million in the 1990s.
