‘Glengarry Glen Ross,’ ‘Fifty Shades,’ and ‘Fear’ Director James Foley Dead at 71
Image
Acclaimed director James Foley has died at age 71. A representative for the Foley family confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the filmmaker passed “peacefully in his sleep earlier this week following a years-long struggle with brain cancer.” It is unclear when Foley was diagnosed and for how long his illness was.

Foley most famously helmed the 1992 film adaptation of David Mamet’s “Glengarry Glen Ross,” starring Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, and Kevin Spacey. Foley would later reunite with Spacey for 12 episodes of Netflix’s first-ever series, “House of Cards.”

Foley made his feature directorial debut in 1984 with “Reckless” starring Daryl Hannah and Aidan Quinn. He was best known for working in the domestic thriller genre, despite defying filmmaker labels. His features include directing Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon in “Fear,” Halle Berry and Bruce Willis in “Perfect Stranger,” and “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed...

James Foley, Director of ‘Glengarry Glen Ross,’ ‘House of Cards’ and ‘Fifty Shades,’ Dies at 71
Image
James Foley, the Brooklyn-born filmmaker who collaborated with A-list stars like Al Pacino, Sean Penn, Madonna and Mark Wahlberg across a 30-plus-year career in film, TV and music videos, has died. He was 71.

Foley’s rep said Thursday he died “peacefully in his sleep earlier this week following a yearslong struggle with brain cancer.”

Born on Dec. 28, 1953, and raised in New York, Foley graduated from high school and went on to study film at New York University followed by USC in Los Angeles. It was during his final year of film school that a chance meeting would change the course of his life and jump start his career behind the camera.

“I was very lucky, and in the perverse calculus of Hollywood I was in the last year of film school and shared a house with a guy. There was a woman who was pursuing my friend so we had this film school party,...

On Henry Cavill’s 42nd Birthday, You Should Watch Him Play a Jerk in a Blonde Wig in This Movie From 2007, Stardust
Image
Many fans would’ve forgotten that Daredevil and Superman acted together in a 2007 romantic fantasy film. A young Henry Cavill wore a blonde wig and played the pompous jerk Humphrey in Stardust, a movie starring Charlie Cox. The film is based on a story by Neil Gaiman, with Argylle director Matthew Vaughn helming it.

It is no wonder that you don’t remember seeing him in the film, because his role was relatively small and the film had a star-studded cast. However, Cavill’s breakout role came after this film in the medieval series, The Tudors. His role in Man of Steel in 2013 would earn him international recognition.

Ben Affleck Was Brutally Roasted About 'Armageddon' by His Chidren to His Face
Image
Ben Affleck might be an Oscar-winning actor, director, and screenwriter—but according to him, his harshest critic lives right under his own roof. Recently, in an amusingly candid moment shared with Jimmy Kimmel, Affleck revealed the brutal roasting he was given by his own children while they watched his 1998 disaster blockbuster, Armageddon. Some would say it is a brave person who endures a screening of their work with their kids, others would say it is foolish.

Michael Bay’s Armageddon is a movie that has divided opinion and been debated since its release almost 30 years ago. Starring Affleck alongside Bruce Willis, Liv Tyler, and a large ensemble cast, the film was the highest-grossing movie of the year in 1998, but it didn’t exactly become the darling of reviewers thanks to its usual Bay mix of over-the-top plotline, outlandish-action sequences, and a somewhat convoluted ending. In short, its story about a...

Luca Guadagnino’s DC movie Sgt. Rock ‘cancelled’
Luca Guadagnino’s DC film ‘Sgt. Rock’ has reportedly been shelved. The 53-year-old director had been working on the comic book movie with his ‘Challengers’ and ‘Queer’ collaborator Justin Kuritzkes, though TheWrap has now claimed the project is no longer going ahead at DC Studios. The outlet reports ‘Sgt. Rock’s cancellation was due to its scheduling, with the film seemingly needing to have started production this summer in the UK due to its reliance on exterior shoots - though the movie is said to have not been able to make the deadline.TheWrap added ‘Sgt. Rock’s budget - which was reportedly set at under $70 million - was likely not an issue and did not factor into its supposed cancellation. While both TheWrap and The Hollywood Reporter claim ‘Sgt. Rock’ has been shelved, Deadline has said the movie’s pre-production has simply halted, with principal photography now aiming to start next summer.

DC Studios’ ‘Sgt. Rock’ with Luca Guadagnino Directing On Hold
Image
DC Studios is putting “Sgt. Rock,” a DC Comics adaptation that was meant to be directed by Luca Guadagnino and star Colin Farrell, on hold for the time being, a source told IndieWire.

The project was in the midst of pre-production and casting and was plotting a shoot in England for this summer, but the source told IndieWire that a summer start for “Sgt. Rock” would’ve been untenable. The film hopes to shoot on location in England and would require summer daylight hours, according to the source, so postponing to the winter would not have been ideal for cast or crew. The film is hoping to find a new start date next summer.

It’s unclear if director Guadagnino or Farrell would still be involved come summer of 2026. Guadagnino specifically is busy with several other projects, including his upcoming film for Amazon and MGM called “After the Hunt” and...

DC Studios Delays 'Sgt. Rock' Film From Luca Guadagnino & Colin Farrell; Reportedly Not Canceled
Image
Sgt. Rock seemed to have been cut down before it even got into the fray at DC Studios. Reports suggested that despite recruitingThe Penguin star Colin Farrell for the lead role, the company had decided not to move forward with the production due to unforeseen hiccups.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, DC Studios was not moving forward with Luca Guadagnino's Sgt. Rock with Colin Farrell in the titular role. However, it has since been suggested by multiple sources, including Deadline, that this is not the case, and instead there is a chance that the film will still set cameras rolling next summer instead of this year so it has more time to prepare. Challengers star Mike Faist was said to be locked in for a supporting role, while an actress had been courted for a starring part alongside Farrell. Check out the plot description, per THR:

DC Studios’ Luca Guadagnino Movie ‘Sgt. Rock’ Not Moving Forward
Image
The battle is over even before it even began for World War II soldier Sgt. Rock.

Sgt. Rock, DC Studios’ action war movie based that was to shoot this summer, will no longer move forward, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

The feature project, with Luca Guadagnino in the director’s chair, had Colin Farrell as the titular DC Comics hero and was in preproduction as it planned a shoot in England.

It was also in the throes of casting, trying to line up actors who would play the men of Easy Company, the combat unit fighting Nazi forces in Europe. Sources say Mike Faist, who starred in Guadagnino’s Challengers, was lined up for a role. The role of a female French Resistance fighter had also been set, per sources.

It is unclear why the project has been shut down, although an insider said it came down to the project...

Luca Guadagnino’s DC Movie ‘Sgt. Rock’ Scrapped | Exclusive
Image
Well, there’s one less soldier on the DC Studios battlefield.

“Sgt. Rock,” to be directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by his “Challengers” and “Queer” collaborator Justin Kuritzkes, is no longer moving forward at DC Studios, TheWrap has exclusively learned. Colin Farrell, already a part of the DC Comics universe thanks to his role as The Penguin in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” and the HBO spinoff series “The Penguin,” was in talks to play the title character after Daniel Craig dropped out.

The issue, one insider noted, came down to scheduling. The film, which would require a lot of exterior shoots, needed to start production this summer and wasn’t going to make its date. Budget didn’t appear to be an issue — it was meant to come in under $70 million, which for a high-priority comic book adaptation, is a bargain.

DC Studios had no comment.

The character, a...

With a career spanning five decades, the man has kept busy, playing over 100 parts… and now, we have taken on the task of picking some of his best movies. Here we go:

Don’T Kill It (2016)

Directed by Mike Mendez, Don’t Kill It combines action, horror, and comedy while dropping Lundgren into the role of badass demon hunter Jebediah Woodley, who seems more interested in finding his next drink than catching demons. The Tom Hanks Vatican Thriller That's Becoming A Hit On Hulu
Image
When Pope Francis died last week at the age of 88, Catholics and people who'd like to see the Catholic Church become more progressive in its thinking mourned the loss of a good man who foregrounded urgent issues like climate change, LGBTQ rights and Israel's unconscionable assault on Gaza. He was about as liberal-minded as you could hope for a Pope to be at this point in human history, and he gave us hope that the church may continue to evolve for the better. The world was fortunate to have him.

On a far more trivial level, Francis' passing was such a massive cultural event that it was bound to compel people to read more about the church, particularly Vatican politics ... which meant "Conclave," the winner of Best Adapted Screenplay at last month's Academy Awards, suddenly saw its popularity surge once again. But what about the many movie lovers who've...

Marvel's Original Thunderbolts Plans Were Similar To A Bruce Willis Action Movie
Image
If there's anything that Marvel Studios has a vested interest in, it's team-up movies. All of the "Avengers" adventures were billed as events, complete with a who's who of names in starring roles as your favorite comic book characters. 2023's "The Marvels" attempted to recapture some of that magic to mixed results, while the deeply obnoxious "Deadpool & Wolverine" went on to become a massive earner and record breaker. But the biggest surprise to come out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is "Guardians of the Galaxy" and how its scrappy band of space misfits were able to propel a trilogy of films that still stand among the studio's best.

Half of the fun of these movies was watching previously obscure Marvel characters get thrust into the spotlight and seeing how they played off one another. The Guardians were the underdogs who had to prove themselves among the studio's more popular roster of characters.

How Kevin Smith Hilariously Failed To Give Alan Rickman A Line Reading In Dogma
Image
When Kevin Smith shot "Clerks" for $27,575, he'd received a small amount of film school training but was a babe in the woods when it came to the crucial aspect of directing actors. It shows in the movie, which is so stiffly performed that I've never been able to connect to it. The screenplay is undeniably hilarious and wise in the ways of the workaday convenience store world, but Smith's actors seem so oddly strangled. It's not the kind of acting you get in a poorly rehearsed community theater production where you can see the actors struggling to remember their lines; it's more like you're watching people who've been unnaturally directed. Their performances are really those of their director, not their own.

The off performances in "Clerks" and "Mallrats" began to make sense years later when I heard that Smith had a penchant for committing the cardinal sin of directing. Be it theater,...

How Leaving “ER” After Season 5 Changed George Clooney’s Hollywood Career
Image
Almost 30 years ago, NBC premiered a TV show named ER in 1994. As the title suggests, the series followed the inner life and stories of an Emergency Room of the fictional County General Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. The storyline revolved around the critical cases that the hospital staff and doctors faced and how they dealt with other problems in their personal lives that bled into their professional lives.

Way before Grey’s Anatomy, people would tune in to watch the NBC show to learn more about the historic lives of doctors and nurses. George Clooney played Doug Ross, while Julianna Margulies portrayed Carol Hathaway’s character.

A snippet from ER (Emergency Room) | Credits: NBC

The show had a good run for 15 seasons, but as it progressed, many lead actors left and said goodbye to their characters. One such actor was Clooney, who got massive fame for featuring in the series and made an exit after season 5. However,...

How Ben Affleck Feels About His Infamous Armageddon DVD Commentary Years Later
Image
Is the commentary track a lost art? For those who get their movies at home via streaming services, it certainly is. Unfortunately, the major services don't offer any sort of bonus features, while VOD purchases only come with a small selection of content. For those of us who still worship at the altar of physical media, the academic commentary track is alive and well, with every release containing at least one track examining a film. However, both groups have to endure the loss of what used to be a Hollywood staple: the cast commentary track for a recent film. While these continue to crop up on occasion, they've become exceedingly rare, which is bizarre for anyone who was around for the heyday of DVD. Heck, commentaries used to be such a prerequisite that in 2008's "Tropic Thunder," Robert Downey Jr.'s Kirk Lazarus (playing Lincoln Osiris) made a quip about...

'Thunderbolts*' Director Reveals How 'Die Hard' Is Part of the Marvel Film's "DNA"
Image
Marvel is no stranger to rewrites, and Thunderbolts* —which debuts this week — is no exception. However, unlike other films under the MCU umbrella, the upcoming film has an interesting connection to an action classic. The director of the film, Jake Schreier, spoke to GamesRadar+ about its inspirations, and its connection to John McClane.

"When [screenwriter] Eric Pearson came up with it [the story] with Brian Chapek, I think one of the original versions was kind of like a Die Hard thing. Or it was all going to take place in this vault, and getting out of it, which would have been a very cool thing. So I think in the DNA of the film, it was always a little bit more contained."

The vault would have been the original meeting place of all the titular team's members, as opposed to being brought together by a particularly determined Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). Trying to...

10 Most Influential ’90s Sci-Fi Movies, Ranked
Image
Science fiction is one of the most popular genres out there, but it takes a lot of effort and thought to get right. Sci-fi is not just about aliens and spaceships; it is about what science can do to address the current problems of the world, and whether it will solve those issues or worsen them. There is a reason speculative fiction like that always stands apart.

While ‘80s films like Blade Runner and Terminator wondered about the future of humanity, Hollywood seemed to pivot to a more blockbuster-y treatment for these films. Some of them asked profound questions, but also had fun with it. There is a reason the following list of films is extremely popular and influential, as their inspirations can be seen even today.

Here are the ten most influential sci-fi films of the 1990s.

Ben Affleck Calls Out Kevin Costner’s 1989 Movie Flashback Facade

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon started in the movie industry at a young age, and even so, they have already shown what they can offer. In fact, the power duo joined Kevin Costner’s 1989 sports drama movie Field of Dreams even though they were only extras. Well, they had to start somewhere, right?

While the Yellowstone actor claimed he fondly remembers them, Affleck is not convinced. He thinks that Costner was only being nice when he said this, but in reality, he does not really recall seeing them on the movie set.

Quentin Tarantino’s 2003 Hit Film Was the Catalyst for Demi Moore’s Career Doubts: “Where do I fit in?”
Image
Demi Moore just gave the performance of her life. And she did it covered in blood and brilliance. Moore has never been one to play it safe. From Ghost to G.I. Jane, she’s made a career out of bold choices—but in The Substance, she doesn’t just push the envelope, she sets it on fire. At 62, Demi Moore bares it all—emotionally, physically, metaphorically—and reminds Hollywood that she’s still a force to be reckoned with.

When The Substance premiered at Cannes, it didn’t just debut—it detonated. Moore walked out of that screening as The name on everyone’s lips, all over again. Directed by Coralie Fargeat (Revenge), the film is a visceral, blood-soaked body-horror trip that channels Cronenberg, Carpenter, and a bit of Death Becomes Her on steroids. And Moore? She owns every frame.

She plays Elisabeth Sparkle, a washed-up Hollywood icon clinging to relevance.

Unbreakable (2000) Movie Ending Explained & Themes Analyzed: What is the Ultimate Revelation in David and Elijah’s Final Encounter?
M. Night Shyamalan in The Last Airbender (2010)
A superhero thriller without the hyper-stylized energy or the textbook hero-villain framework, M. Night Shyamalan’s “Unbreakable” quietly kicked off what would later become the Unbreakable film series. Originally written as a spec script and structured like a comic book, the film never really cares to follow the line between studio-safe genre and stubborn realism. It just does its own thing and ends up finding a voice that feels oddly singular.

Starring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson in performances that strangely mirror each other, the film roots both its superhero and supervillain origin arcs in something so grounded, you stop watching it for patterns or genre cues and start watching for what’s actually happening. There’s a kind of lived-in grit to the storytelling—like domestic drama that just happens to brush against the supernatural. And somehow, without even trying too hard, the film builds this moody, almost...

30 Lowest Rated Movies on IMDb
Image
All the new movies coming out in recent years are aiming to be critically praised, but some films defy the odds—they don’t really care about IMDb scores but rather serve as a source for people to have fun. Think about it—how many times have you watched a movie, had a blast, and then checked the IMDb score only to find a mediocre number?

Many films out there get roasted by critics but still manage to rack up millions. And sometimes, who doesn’t love over-the-top, CGI-packed movies—types of films that make you roll on the floor laughing? There are many films starring actors like Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell that somehow manage to rank low on IMDb, yet grip the audience from start to end.

So, this list will not be about movies that are bad in any way; it’s about the ones that, despite all their flaws,...

Bruce Willis in Die Hard (1988)
Quentin Tarantino Says This Classic Prime Video Thriller is “Clever” and “expertly made”
Bruce Willis in Die Hard (1988)
Die Hard is an iconic feature that forever changed the action movie landscape. Countless films have imitated it, but none have done it better. You don’t have to take my word for it, though. Quentin Tarantino and his Video Archives Podcast cohost Roger Avary spent a few moments discussing the epic picture on last week’s episode. After listening, it’s clear to me that the Reservoir Dogs filmmaker holds the feature in high regard.

“If you live in a world where Die Hard already existed, it means nothing to you or you already know it’s a terrific movie,” explained Tarantino. “What was so great about Die Hard is you didn’t know that walking in. It’s just so clever, and it’s so expertly made.”

I concur with Tarantino. Die Hard made me fall in love with action cinema. I saw it for the first time several decades ago.

15 Time Travel Movies That Actually Make Sense
Image
Time travel is one of the coolest concepts of sci-fi; the whole idea of manipulating and bending time to take yourself to a time of your wish is fascinating, and Hollywood has surely tried its hand at it. There are plenty of movies out there that play with the concept, but let’s be real, not everyone can nail it, oftentimes making movies with confusing paradoxes and stories filled with plot holes.

However, there have also been several movies that came out over the years that did justice to the concept and made cinematic gold. From directors bending the rules of time to creating thrillers and romantic comedies; there is something for everyone, especially to those who like sci-fi.

Recent movies follow multiple concepts of time, from time loops, alternate timelines, and paradoxes, directors tapped into a vast playing field that is guaranteed to fulfill a nerd’s dream. So...

Before Clint Eastwood And John Wayne, One Actor Dominated Westerns For Years
Image
Actor Tom Mix made his feature film debut, as far as film scholars have been able to determine, in the 1909 Western "The Cowboy Millionaire" (directed by Francis Boggs and Otis Turner). The name of Mix's character is not known. "The Cowboy Millionaire" is a rarity in Mix's filmography in that it survives to this day. Most of Mix's films, sadly, are lost media; no prints survive. He was one of the most prolific American actors of his generation, appearing in multiple one-reel Westerns every year from 1909 to 1929. In 1916 alone, he appeared in 37 movies, which is three films per month and one extra besides. 1914 was also a banner year for Mix, as he appeared in a mere 15 movies yet directed 14 of them. Overall, Mix appeared in about 150 films in his career, usually playing the same type of paternal, friendly, heroic cowboy character in each one. Of those films, however, only about 35 survive.

Why Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, And Arnold Schwarzenegger Turned Down The Simpsons
Image
There are enough stars that have cameoed in "The Simpsons" to cover the entire Springfield Walk of Fame and back again. Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep, U2, and Daniel Radcliffe (who has voiced more than one character) are just some of the names that've shared the animated space with Homer (Dan Castellaneta) and the rest of that beloved family. Three names that you have never seen on the end credits, however, were three iconic action heroes that were scheduled to make an appearance but unfortunately never did: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Bruce Willis.

It turns out that the heroes who dominated the silver screen in the '80s and early '90s never swung by the home of 742 Evergreen Terrace, even after they were explicitly written into an episode. Season 5, episode 10 of "The Simpsons," entitled "$pringfield," saw Mr. Burns (Harry Shearer) open a casino, and Schwarzenegger, Stallone, and Willis agreed...

Image
Ben Affleck was just a young kid alongside Matt Damon when the two wrote and acted the iconic 1997 film Good Will Hunting, which got them their first Oscar win in a Hollywood career that would go on to span decades.

He was a young adult when he starred in the iconic 2001 Michael Bay film Pearl Harbor, where the world fell in love with the actor. The actor would be forever grateful to that gift because he got to spend a lot of time with the U.S. military while filming.

Ben Affleck had real military experience during Pearl Harbor

The movie is one of Michael Bay’s finest films to date and is often remembered fondly by millions of fans despite being released two decades ago. Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett, and Kate Beckinsale made up the lead cast of the movie, which went on to earn $449 million at the global...

Image
Demi Moore has been around for multiple decades, with a series of successful hits at the box office. However, 2024 gave her the critical acclaim she deserves with the horror hit The Substance, which led to her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

However, once the award show came, the person who was crowned winner was Anora's Mikey Madison. Over a month after the Oscars, Moore reacted to her Oscar loss in an interview with Time magazine.

Moore was named one of 2025's Most 100 Influential Artists, and received a tribute from filmmaker Ryan Murphy. ‘Jeopardy!’: Is Ken Jennings Secretly Quoting ‘Die Hard’ on Show?
Image
When it comes to Jeopardy!, fans have a keen ear and eye on what happens during the game show. And some fans have noticed that host Ken Jennings keeps subtly repeating a famous quote from Die Hard. “‘Double Jeopardy, where the scores can really change!’ Ken’s said this a couple of times. Is he quoting John McClane in Die Hard?” a Reddit user asked. John McClane was the main character in the 1988 film, who was portrayed by Bruce Willis. “100%,” said one user. “Yes,” wrote another. In Die Hard, McClane referenced Jeopardy! when he said to Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), “Sorry, Hans, wrong guess. Would you like to go for Double Jeopardy, where the scores can really change?” One Reddit user said that original host Art Fleming used to say the quote that Jennings does all the time. “Die Hard was quoting Art. Drop's Incredible Screenplay Learned Every Lesson Die Hard Taught Us Decades Ago
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

In their invaluable book "Writing Movies for Fun and Profit," authors Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant (former members of "The State" and writers of hit films like "Night at the Museum" and "Herbie: Fully Loaded") had a few pieces of immutable advice for aspiring screenwriters hoping to make a living in Hollywood. Importantly, they advised that writers should never hang all your dreams on a single screenplay, and they should be able to toss aside a script if it gets turned down. They also advised that writers say, "Yes, I can do that," to every single studio note, no matter how ridiculous. They wanted to ensure that an ambitious should churn out as much work as possible, and worry more about "entertainment" than "art."

Perhaps most crucially, an aspiring screenwriter should watch "Die Hard" over and over and over again.

G20 Review: Viola Davis has her guns out in Prime Video’s formulaic action movie
Image
Plot: U.S. President Danielle Sutton must defend her family, fellow leaders and the world when the G20 summit in Cape Town, South Africa is taken over by terrorists

Review: I grew up in the era of Arnold, Stallone, Jcvd, Bruce Willis, and, yes, Steven Seagal. Action movies of the 1980s and 1990s had a different flavor than today, but seeing an actor play the President of the United States and kicking terrorists or alien asses was always a fun and exploitative experience. It is impossible to avoid that surge of patriotism as Harrison Ford said, “Get off my plane,” or Bill Pullman declared, “Today we celebrate our Independence Day.” In recent years, Gerard Butler and Channing Tatum have played agents protecting the President and garnering their own action-hero status. Still, it will never replace Potus wielding a gun or beating the hell out of a bad guy. The Prime...
