Cannes Film Festival Photos Day 7: Spike Lee, Denzel Washington, A$AP Rock at ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ photocall, Dakota Johnson & More
Image
The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival continues on Day 7 with the world premiere of Spike Lee’s Highest to Lowest, starring Denzel Washington, Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, and A$AP Rocky; Michael Angelo Covino’s Splitsville starring Kyle Marvin, Adria Arjona, Dakota Johnson, and Alpha from director Julia Ducournau.

The film follows a titan of the music industry (Washington), a man whose legendary hearing has earned him the moniker “the best ears in the business,” as he becomes the target of a high-stakes ransom plot. This perilous situation forces him into a life-or-death moral quandary.

Marking the fifth collaboration between brothers Washington and Lee, the film reimagines Akira Kurosawa’s gripping crime thriller High and Low, transplanting its tense narrative to the gritty reality of contemporary New York City.

Spike Lee Toasts ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ With The Hollywood Reporter and Threads at Cannes Bash
Image
With his beloved New York Knicks leading its NBA playoffs matchup with the Boston Celtics after a 119-81 victory this weekend, Spike Lee doesn’t need a million reasons to raise a glass. But The Hollywood Reporter and Threads gave the veteran auteur one more by hosting an early evening celebration for his Cannes Film Festival selection Highest 2 Lowest at Hyde Beach by Campari on Sunday.

Set to make a triumphant return Monday to the Palais for the world premiere of his Apple Original feature in partnership with A24, Lee got buzz going early — in more ways than one thanks to cocktails by Campari — by turning up to the beach-set bash accompanied by his family, including wife Tonya Lewis Lee and their children Satchel and Jackson Lee.

Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee hold up his THR cover.

The Lees turned up just before 6 p.m. to the party, where...

The Cannes Film Festival is underway, and while the Marché Du Film is as booming as ever with exciting packages of future films, there are plenty of titles playing in competition or in the Cannes sidebars that could make a big splash at the box office or the awards season race for the right buyer. Last year’s “The Substance” was acquired by Mubi before it landed a Best Picture Oscar nomination and made $77.3 million worldwide.

Here are the 13 films we predicted ahead of the festival could find homes quickly. We’ll update the below list with all the acquisitions as they come in.

Antonio Banderas' Gripping Historical Action Flop Is Finally Finding An Audience On Tubi
Image
Based strictly on box office, it would not be accurate to call Antonio Banderas one of the biggest movie stars of the 1990s, but once I laid eyes on the striking Spaniard in Pedro Almódovar's "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" and "Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down," I wanted to him to be in everything. In terms of scintillating, dead sexy screen presence, only Denzel Washington could match him. He became a mainstream American sensation when Madonna failed to seduce him in her "Blonde Ambition" tour documentary "Madonna: Truth or Dare." Banderas was primed for superstardom. And Hollywood promptly fumbled the ball.

Banderas delivered the smoldering goods in Arne Glimcher's lively historical drama "The Mambo Kings," but Warner Bros. had no idea how to sell a movie about Cuban music to American moviegoers, so it stiffed commercially in 1992. Banderas subsequently got lost in the star-studded...

Cannes: Falling Palm Tree Injures Pedestrian, Closing Down Section of Croisette
Image
A pedestrian was reportedly seriously injured near the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday after strong winds blew down a palm tree.

A section of the walkway along the Croisette, the main boulevard that runs through the seaside resort, was closed as emergency workers cleared debris. The accident occurred near the Mademoiselle Gray Plage Barriere beach, a venue where many parties and events are held during the festival.

A spokesperson for Cannes confirmed that a pedestrian had been injured, but referred other inquiries to City Hall. A spokesperson for City Hall did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It was not immediately clear what injuries the person had suffered, but according to Screen International, “A man was…seen lying on the ground with blood coming from his head, being attended to by fellow pedestrians, and emergency services were called.”

Another witness told the Afp: “There was a terrible...

New Marvel Deal Changes the Hierarchy of Power for MCU VFX Artists
Image
For years, Marvel Studios has continued to dazzle audiences with its blockbuster films. However, the VFX artists responsible for bringing these cinematic spectacles to life have faced grueling work conditions.

Reports have highlighted the issues, such as excessive overtime, lack of breaks, and immense pressure to meet deadlines, factors that have contributed to what many described as a ‘toxic’ work environment.

However, after enduring years of unhealthy working conditions, they have unionized, leading to a significant shift in the industry’s labor dynamics by finally aligning their rights for fair pay and healthier working environments.

Marvel VFX artists ratify their IATSE contracts for better working conditions

In a significant step forward for the VFX industry, the visual effects artists behind major Marvel, Disney, and Avatar projects have ratified their first labor contracts, securing a range of standard union protections.

Producer Jason Michael Berman Hits Cannes With New A/Vantage Pictures and ‘Highest 2 Lowest’
Image
Producer Jason Michael Berman feels he has an advantage with the launch of A/Vantage Pictures.

The former president of Mandalay Pictures has built his career identifying the space where artistry meets impact. Now, with A/Vantage, he’s placing that mission front and center, starting with the Cannes Film Festival premiere of the Spike Lee-directed “Highest 2 Lowest,” starring Denzel Washington.

Launched in April, A/Vantage is committed to culturally resonant, commercially viable films. The name reflects its goals: “A” for authentic, “Vantage” for a unique point of view, and a nod to Berman’s childhood as an Av club kid.

“I’m an Av kid at heart,” he says with a chuckle and smile. “This is about perspective, giving filmmakers the vantage to tell stories that matter, and giving audiences a vantage to see the world differently.”

Berman has long supported visionary storytellers with something personal to say.

Top 10 Ryan Reynolds Movies Ranked by Fans
Image
Ryan Reynolds has been a Hollywood staple for years, though he’s now best known for his iconic portrayal of Deadpool—a role he seems made for.

His diverse filmography spans more than just comedies, which is why fans came together to rate all his movies. Let’s take a look at which ones made it to the top 10.

10. ‘Safe House’ (2012)

Reynolds teams up with Denzel Washington in a 2012 one-man-army action thriller. Despite the star-studded cast, the film received mixed reviews from critics, with its weakest points being the storyline and action sequences.

9. ‘Just Friends’ (2005)

Just Friends has a premise that even Deadpool would probably mock, but it’s still a decent choice if you’re into feel-good romances and holiday films. Ryan Reynolds stars alongside Amy Smart and Anna Faris, though critics agree that the movie isn’t quite as funny as you’d expect from a Reynolds comedy.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is known for its surprising casting choices. Throughout its existence, the superhero franchise has shocked fans with its ambitious and bold casting, underscoring the MCU’s reputation for making bold and effective casting choices.

However, there has been a recent rumor going around claiming the legend Daniel Day-Lewis is being eyed to play Magneto in the franchise. While he is back from retirement for a short while, it seems a little far-fetched, even for Kevin Feige’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, that they would be eyeing an actor like Ddl.

This Exceptional Denzel Washington Thriller Terrifies on Prime Video
Image
It’s saying something that my favorite part of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II wasn’t one Paul Mescal, but instead one of this generation’s greatest living performers, Denzel Washington. He was even widely considered a front-runner for an Oscar nom this year. Upon his snub, he remarked to The New York Times, “On the day you didn’t get a nomination for an Oscar, you’re working on Othello on Broadway.” Incredible.

It helps that Gladiator II is one in a long line of worthwhile Denzel Washington vehicles. The two-time Oscar winner loves a character drama as much as he does some action schlock. Seriously, no one does it quite as well as he does. It should come as no surprise, then, that one of Washington’s most successful franchises in recent years recently fought its way into the Top 10 Prime Video charts.

Per Prime Video: Denzel Washington...

Denzel Washington’s Most Unnecessary Sequel Starring ‘Better Call Saul’ Star Is a Netflix Hit After 6 Years
Image
Inside Man: Most Wanted didn’t need to exist, but here it is, sitting pretty on Netflix six years later as a surprise hit. It never lived up to the legacy of Spike Lee’s original, and adding Better Call Saul star Rhea Seehorn didn’t exactly fix that. The sequel felt like a straight-to-stream cash grab with none of the original’s brains or tension.

But somehow, folks, it’s found an audience now. Maybe people just can’t resist a good old-fashioned heist, even when it’s wrapped in a forgettable follow-up. It’s chaotic, unnecessary, but weirdly watchable, and that’s probably enough for Netflix.

Denzel Washington As Race-Swapped Magneto Rumor Reportedly True, Racist Backlash Has Already Begun
Image
One rumor is gaining serious traction (and backlash): Denzel Washington is stepping into the role of Magneto. According to recent reports, the legendary actor is confirmed to play a race-swapped version of the iconic X-Men villain. While many fans are hyped to see what Washington brings to the table, not everyone’s on board.

The announcement has sparked waves of racist outrage online, proving once again how deep-rooted bias runs in fandom spaces. As Marvel continues pushing for more inclusive casting, this move could reshape the MCU and challenge some uncomfortable truths along the way.

Denzel Washington Reportedly Earns $35 Million for Streaming Movie Roles
Image
A new report has revealed Denzel Washington's alleged salary for starring in streaming movies and, perhaps unsurprisingly for an actor of his caliber, it's a hefty sum. The two-time Academy Award winner has demonstrated range and versatility throughout his storied acting career, which spans four decades and encompasses playing diverse characters across a variety of genres, with notable performances in the likes of Malcolm X, Training Day, and Gladiator II, but he has also signed on for several streaming projects in recent years.

According to Screen Rant, Puck has reported that three sources "familiar" with the situation have indicated that Washington is getting a $35 million pay packet for his role in Netflix's newly-announced heist thriller Here Comes the Flood, in which he will star opposite Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones. The project was announced at the streaming company's third Upfront presentation, which is why it's currently a hot topic of conversation.

Denzel Washington and Robert Pattinson thriller coming to Netflix
Image
Back in 2020, it was big news in film circles when Netflix picked up the original script by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Simon Kinberg for Here Comes The Flood in an undisclosed seven-figure deal. Then, the agreement for this not-so-conventional heist movie seems to have fallen into the shadows, with the early possibility that Jason Bateman will direct an iteration that will never occur.

Five years on, and the whole project is back on track, with the directing duties, production team, and principal cast officially announced. Here Comes The Flood, based on Kingberg’s screenplay, will have a strong cast featuring Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Daisy Edgar-Jones in key roles.

Oscar-nominated Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles takes on directing duties, and Samson Mucke is executive producer. The production is yet to start, so no trailers or release date are available.

Image
Inside Man: Most Wanted, the 2019 sequel to Spike Lee’s classic crime thriller starring Denzel Washington, is now trending around the world on streaming. The direct-to-video movie was released on Netflix to little fanfare six years ago and has been completely overlooked by critics ever since, but has now made its way into the streaming platform’s global top 10. Rumor: X-men Reboot's Leads Revealed; Colman Domingo Eyed For Professor X, Daisy Edgar Jones For Jean Grey

The trades recently revealed that Thunderbolts*/*The New Avengers director Jake Schreier is set to direct Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot. Casting rumours have been swirling for several months, though, suggesting he'll have a limited role in deciding who plays the McU's mutants.

That's par for the course for any filmmaker who works on these movies, and two more big names have been added to the mix today.

Talking on The Hot Mic podcast, Jeff Sneider said he's heard that, similar to Vanessa Kirby in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Marvel Studios is building the X-Men cast around Charles Xavier/Professor X, Scott Summers/Cyclops, and Jean Grey/Marvel Girl.

Sneider no longer believes Harris Dickinson will play Cyclops, but following rumblings that Denzel Washington is being eyed for Magneto, Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man star Colman Domingo is reportedly in contention for Professor X.

Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones are to star in the Netflix thriller Here Comes The Flood, directed by City Of God's Fernando Meirelles.

Cannes Film Festival 2025 | Predicting the standing ovations
Image
Cannes Film Festival is known for its standing ovations and this year, we’re trying to predict how long they’ll last.

The Cannes Film Festival, perhaps the glitziest, most glamorous film festival of them all, is now in full swing. Celebrities and journalists alike have gathered on the French Riviera for 11 days of movie premieres and press conferences.

In the next few days, the internet will be full of reviews for the new films by Richard Linklater, Wes Anderson, Lynne Ramsay and even Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (here’s one!). We’re also going to be getting daily updates on the lengths of the standing ovations each film gets, a scoring methodology that’s Cannes’ own version of a Rotten Tomatoes score.

Most films presented at the festival will get a standing ovation and (some) headlines love to highlight the specific minutes the audience stayed standing up and clapping.

Netflix Upfront 2025: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, ‘Stranger Things,’ and Renewals Galore
Image
Netflix returned to the upfronts in fine fashion.

Netflix’s upfront event took place at the Perelman Performing Arts Center in Manhattan. The biggest name in streaming kept things intimate, with a scant 500 or so people in attendance. Compared to Disney, which filled a convention hall at the Javits Center, and NBCUniversal, which took over Radio City Music Hall, Netflix’s presentation felt downright cozy.

Jude Law and Jason Bateman opened the show with some discussion of Netflix’s reach and programming before some playful banter and hyping up their new drama series “Black Rabbit.”

Amy Reinhard, Netflix’s president of advertising, took the stage next, telling advertisers in attendance that Netflix shows are not just put on in the background and ignored. “When you compare us to our competitors, attention starts higher and ends much higher,” Reinhard said. “And even more impressive, members pay as much attention to mid-roll...

Denzel Washington & Robert Pattinson To Star In Their First Movie Together, And It’s A Bank Heist Thriller
Image
Robert Pattinson and Denzel Washington are now set to star in their first movie together. Pattinson got his start in young adult franchise movies, first playing Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and then taking the role of Edward Cullen in the massively popular Twilight franchise. After the conclusion of Twilight, he has starred in other blockbusters like 2022's The Batman, but he has also worked in smaller projects with a number of notable directors and co-stars including The Lighthouse (opposite Willem Dafoe), The King (opposite Timothée Chalamet), and High Life (opposite Juliette Binoche).

His newest co-star would certainly count among those notable names. There have been a great number of both critically and commercially successful Denzel Washington movies. In addition to blockbusters such as the Equalizer trilogy, Unstoppable, Safe House, and American Gangster helping push his filmography's cumulative worldwide box office haul past $4.9 billion, the...

Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones will star in Here Comes the Flood, a Simon Kinberg-penned crime thriller that Fernando Meirelles will direct for Netflix.

Meirelles is also producing the feature with Oscar nominee Kinberg and Audrey Chon, the latter two via their Genre Films banner.

Netflix picked up the original screenplay in 2020, making a splashy seven-figure deal to win a heated spec script auction. It was a markedly different era, with the streaming wars in full swing and the streamer’s film unit being run by Scott Stuber, who always had Netflix’s wallet open. Still, the project survived (at one point Jason Bateman was in talks to direct an iteration but a deal never took), and now five years later has attracted top-shelf talent.

Logline details are being kept in the dark, but Flood is being described as an unconventional heist movie about a bank guard,...

The Unnecessary Sequel To Denzel Washington's Hit Crime Thriller Becomes A Streaming Success Six Years Later
Image
Hollywood has been betting on sequels for decades as they are almost always guaranteed hits, especially after the huge success of a first installment. However, the recipe doesn't always work.

In 2006, two-time Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington starred in Spike Lee's successful, star-studded movie Inside Man. It was a critical and commercial hit, and over a decade later, Inside Out: Most Wanted was released. Although the sequel didn't make a splash, it achieved success on Netflix, debuting in second place in the global streaming charts, per Tudum.

Although this is not Inside Man: Most Wanted's first stint on Netflix, the movie was back in the charts for the week between May 5 and 11. It amassed 12.3 million views and 21.8 million hours viewed, debuting in second place just behind Vince Vaughn's new feel-good comedy Nonnas. The heist film entered the Top 10 in 69 countries, and became the number one film in 21 territories across the globe.

Tom Cruise Hopes Splashy ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ Cannes Premiere Helps Restore Franchise to Box Office Glory
Image
Tom Cruise’s global game of promotional hopscotch planted him in Cannes this week, where he will unveil “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” following stops in Japan, Korea and London. Brooding closeups of the star’s dirt-and-blood caked face have peppered the Croisette on 4K LED screens and the premiere promises to be one this year’s glitziest.

While Denzel Washington, Jennifer Lawrence, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Mescal and Halle Berry will all take turns on the red carpet at the Grand Palais, Cruise is the one pulling out all the stops for his last go as field agent Ethan Hunt.

At 62, the movie icon is dancing harder and faster than ever before to get global audiences to theaters. Last week, he scaled the top of the massive BFI Imax theater in London. The following day, he jumped feet-first out of a helicopter with a camera strapped to his chest.

Broadway Box Office Has Finally Recovered, Overtaking Pre-Pandemic Returns for First Time
Image
Last week, Broadway grosses for the season-to-date surpassed 2018-2019’s record season-to-date box office for the first time.

Total industry box office hit $1.8 billion for the season, propelled by hits such as Good Night, and Good Luck, starring George Clooney, which was last week’s highest earner, with $3.8 million, followed by Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, with $3.2 million and Glengarry Glen Ross, starring Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk and Bill Burr, with $2.4 million.

Good Night, and Good Luck and Glengarry Glen Ross both announced that they had recouped their capitalizations, with Glengarry Glen Ross breaking the Palace Theatre box office record with a gross of $2.4 million.

Some shows also appeared to get a boost from the Tony nominations, including Death Becomes Her, which saw its grosses shoot up close to $270,000 from the prior week to $1.3 million, Buena Vista Social Club, which saw a close to $90,000 gain to $1.2 million, Maybe Happy Ending,...

Broadway Box Office For 2024-2025 Season Surpasses Pre-Pandemic Record
Image
Update, with additional figures Broadway reached a major post-pandemic milestone last week, with season-to-date box office receipts of $1,801,023,860 for the 2024-2025 season surpassing the same week of the record-setting pre-Covid season of 2018-2019.

The figure is in no small part due to the massive weekly box office tallies of star-driven productions such as Good Night, And Good Luck, with George Clooney; Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal; and Glengarry Glen Ross, starring Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk and Bill Burr. The former two production have routinely grossed in excess of $3 million per week, a remarkable number for Broadway plays (with remarkable ticket prices as well – premium tickets can cost upwards of $800 per seat).

Glengarry Glen Ross, while not hitting the $3M heights, typically grosses in excess of $2M, as does the much-revitalized Wicked, a long-running musical that received a big resurgence in popularity with the release of the hit movie version.
