“This is Deb’s origin story too”: ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Season 2 Can Focus on Debra and That is the Biggest Tribute to Jennifer Carpenter
Image
Portrayed by the immensely talented Jennifer Carpenter, in the original series, Debra was truly integral to the show’s huge success. Her performance not only offered emotional intensity and complexity to the show but also deviated from the otherwise dark themes of the show. With Season 2 of Dexter: Original Sin officially in the works, creators have the opportunity to properly explore Debra’s backstory, honoring the legacy Carpenter has left behind.

With Original Sin being renewed for a second installment, anticipation and excitement among fans are at an all-time high. The series will dive deeper into exploring the inner workings of Dexter Morgan, a serial killer in the making. However, that’s not all. Another equally compelling opportunity of delving deeper into the formative years of his sister, Debra Morgan’s life stands as a promising arc.

Sam Esmail: ‘Mr. Robot’ Had to Be a TV Series Because Hollywood Always Falsely Represented Real-Life Hackers
Image
Sam Esmail intended his cult hit USA Network series, Mr. Robot, as a feature film initially. He soon realized, midway through writing the script, that it had expanded considerably. Esmail shared during an interview that he was fascinated by the hacker culture and wanted to make a project that accurately represented it. He found that a TV series format was best suited for his story.

The series, starring Oscar-winning actor Rami Malek and Christian Slater, explores the story of a hacker with social anxiety disorder, clinical depression, and dissociative identity disorder. Mr. Robot ran for five seasons, with Esmail serving as the writer and director of multiple episodes in addition to his showrunning responsibility.

“You would lose all of that kind of charm”: Real Reason Why Patrick Gibson Didn’t Mimic Michael C. Hall as Dexter in ‘Original Sin’
Image
Stepping into the shoes of a character as iconic as Dexter Morgan is by no means a small feat. The enigmatic vigilante serial killer with a code has been a fan favorite for well over a decade. So when Patrick Gibson was cast to play the role of young Dexter in the prequel series Dexter: Original Sin, he was presented with the overwhelming task of upholding the image Michael C. Hall so effortlessly ingrained in pop culture memory.

Rather than attempting to directly imitate the original portrayal, Gibson chose to bring his unique style to the role. He made his path and strived to justly encapsulate the spirit of a young Dexter without completely replicating the previous performance.

“How can everything not be enough?”: ‘Firefly’ Isn’t ‘Mr. Robot’ and Nathan Fillion Probably Knew That a Long Time Ago
Image
The love for Firefly isn’t dying any time soon, and Nathan Fillion would like to keep it that way. While the series wasn’t allowed the luxury to run more than a single season at Fox, Fillion might be satisfied with his run as Captain Malcolm Reynolds in that one season. The Rookie star wasn’t so eager to jump on the ‘bring back Firefly’ wagon, because he believed it was enough.

Fillion’s take shouldn’t be overlooked, as Firefly probably dodged a bullet when it ended with a single season. It didn’t have to face the fan complaints of a boring or forced second or future seasons. The series probably avoided the fate of USA Network’s Mr. Robot, which had a great beginning that was ruined by a below-average second season.

Fox cancelled the series after airing eleven out of its fourteen episodes. On paper,...

‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Season 2 Can Make Jennifer Carpenter’s Debra Truly a Hunted Prey in the Original Series
Image
Dexter: Original Sin offers deeper insight into Dexter’s early life and his complex relationship with his adoptive father and mentor, Harry Morgan. In addition to exploring Dexter’s formative years, the prequel series also touches on his adoptive sister, Debra Morgan, and her own complicated dynamic with Harry.

With the show renewed for a second season, fans are expecting more of Debra and Dexter’s developing bond, along with the chilling possibility that Debra may have been targeted by Brian Moser long before the events of the original series.

Dexter: Original Sin Season 2 could add a chilling layer to Debra and Brian’s twisted relationship

Portrayed by Jennifer Carpenter in the Showtime flagship, Debra endures immense trauma throughout Dexter’s eight-season run. While her life has always been complicated, viewers witness her emotional struggles right from Season 1.

‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Season 2 Needs to Make the Same ‘Mistakes’ That Made Me Fall in Love With the Show
Image
Dexter: Original Sin struck a nerve by embracing the messy, uncertain beginnings of its iconic antihero. Season 1 didn’t shy away from Dexter’s missteps, it showed him fumbling through his early kills, testing codes, and reckoning with the emotional weight of his impulses. It was far from polished, but that’s what made it work.

As Season 2 approaches, I’m eager to see the show double down on that unrefined journey. There’s still so much ground to cover, his flawed experiments in vigilante justice, the murky moral choices, and the gradual shaping of the ‘code’ that defined him in the original series.

These early mistakes aren’t bugs in the story; they’re essential features. Watching Dexter stumble, learn, and evolve is what makes his transformation compelling.

Michael C. Hall Explains How Dexter: Resurrection Won't Make New Blood's Biggest Mistake
Image
Michael C. Hall points out the one single misstep that Dexter: Resurrectionwon't be making.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, franchise star Michael C. Hall and showrunner Clyde Phillips explained how the upcoming Dexter: Resurrection will avoid committing one of the franchise's most egregious sins. When asked if the next entry was viewed as a limited or one-off series, Phillips replied with, "We've got the strongest franchise in Showtime's history, and we plan to do this for years."

"Years with an s. The thinking is not to come back for a sort of self-contained one-off again, but leave it open to further exploration. The intention, and hope, is that the story will continue beyond this," Hall added. The star went on to note that, even if the story to come were to end after a single season, it would be hard to imagine that keeping Dexter Morgan off the small screen for very long.

'The Batman' Stars Zoë Kravitz and Robert Pattinson May Be Reuniting... With a Twist
Image
Zoë Kravitz is undoubtedly one of the most prolific actors of this generation. From starring in one huge film franchise to another, she recently proved that her talent can extend beyond acting with the release of her acclaimed directorial debut, Blink Twice, just last year. Now, Kravitz may be stepping behind the camera once again after the successful theatrical debut of the psychological thriller. According to Deadline, the actress-turned-filmmaker is in talks to direct Sony Pictures' How To Save a Marriage. It is reportedly still in early stages of development.

While plot details about How To Save a Marriage remain under wraps, sources close to Deadline say that the film exudes "edgy undertones" akin to Blink Twice. The film's dark nature reportedly pushed the executives behind the project to choose Kravitz as its director. Kravitz's critically acclaimed directorial debut follows cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie), who must discover the truth...

Brushy Bill Roberts
Billy the Kid meets Pancho Villa in Young Guns 3: Dead or Alive
Brushy Bill Roberts
Back in 1949 / ’50, a man called Brushy Bill Roberts claimed to be the legendary Wild West outlaw known as Billy the Kid, having reached the age of 90. There was a lot of evidence to back up his claim and he had the support of people who were known to have associated with Billy the Kid, but the authorities discredited him. One person who believes that Brushy Bill Roberts was Billy the Kid is Emilio Estevez, who played Billy the Kid in the 1988 Western Young Guns and its 1990 sequel Young Guns II (where he also put on old age makeup to play a couple scenes as Brushy Bill). That’s how Estevez is able to move forward with Young Guns 3: Dead or Alive, a project he has been developing with John Fusco, the writer of the Young Guns films, since 2019. Last month, it was confirmed that Young Guns 3 has secured a...

They say you should never work with children or animals, but that’s not stopped movie stars teaming up with animal co-stars. There are usually mixed results – even the can’t-lose buddy pairing of “Tom Hanks and a French mastiff” definitely didn’t end happily for both of them (spoilery details here). Dexter: Original Sin sheds light on several aspects surrounding the titular character’s journey to become the vigilante killer, particularly his relationship with his father, Harry Morgan, and the long-debated question of why Harry gave in to Dexter’s dark urges by creating a code for him to kill.

While the series explores the complexities of Harry’s decisions and his internal struggle, the upcoming season, potentially bringing Harry’s demise into focus, must also confront the emotional fallout that extends beyond Dexter.

Christian Slater explained why Harry Morgan acknowledged Dexter’s urge to kill

Image
Everything you need to know about Dexter: Original Sin Season 2(Photo Credit –Prime Video)

Well, let’s be honest, fans of the Dexter franchise are dying to see more of young Dexter Morgan’s twisted journey. The prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, starring Patrick Gibson as a fresh-faced (but still very stab-happy) Dexter, dives into his early days at the Miami Metro Police Department, long before he became the cold, calculated killer we first met in Dexter.

After the mixed reception of Dexter: New Blood, many thought Showtime had buried the franchise for good. But nope, they’re all in on Dexter-mania, with Original Sin setting the stage for the upcoming Dexter: Resurrection (which will finally bring Michael C. Hall back). Showtime clearly has big plans, and with season 2 officially on the way, Dexter: Original Sin isn’t just surviving, it’s thriving. Time to sharpen those scalpels,...

Showrunner and executive producer Clyde Phillips will return to the series. Though production dates have yet to be set, TheWrap has learned the writers room for this upcoming season will be opening soon.

This renewal is far from surprising given the popularity of Season 1. ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Renewed for Second Season at Paramount+ With Showtime
Image
The young Dexter Morgan’s transformation into a serial killer will continue into a second season.

Paramount+ With Showtime has renewed Dexter: Original Sin for season two, following the conclusion of its 10-episode first installment in February. A writers room for the second season is set to begin work soon, with creator and showrunner Clyde Phillips again at the helm.

Original Sin‘s first season takes place in 1991 and focuses on Dexter (Patrick Gibson) as he makes his first kills, guided by his father, Harry (Christian Slater), while also working as an intern in the Miami Metro Police Department.

Phillips told The Hollywood Reporter midway through the season that the prequel allowed him and his fellow writers the chance to highlight the origins of key elements of the Dexter flagship series, which stars Michael C. Hall as the adult Dexter (Hall also narrates Original Sin). “This season’s a whole Easter egg hunt,...

From creator, showrunner and executive producer Clyde Phillips, Dexter: Original Sin is the first prequel series in the expanding franchise following serial killer Dexter Morgan. Michael C. The 10-episode original drama series is set in 1991 Miami and follows Dexter (Gibson), a student refining his killer skills with the help and support of his adoptive father Harry (Christian Slater). ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Creator Confirms a Major Character’s Fate in Season 2 That I Can’t Wait to See: ‘We plan on keeping him around for a long time’
Image
Dexter: Original Sin has revitalized the franchise in many ways. It brought renewed attention to the series with a deeper look into Dexter’s early life and the characters around him, including Debra Morgan and his adoptive father, Harry Morgan, who trained Dexter and gave him the code to manage his dark urges.

While we saw Harry throughout the original series, it was mostly through the lens of how Dexter viewed him. But the prequel series really offers a more bleak and complex look at who Harry truly was.

And the prequel does seem to have a lot in store for him, as the showrunner has shared that he’s not just ready to let go of Harry and plans to keep him around for a long time.

'Murder in the First': Kevin Bacon Gave His Best Performance in True Story Thriller
Image
Standing in the middle of San Francisco Bay with its stone walls and foreboding presence, Alcatraz Island, the former prison once thought to be escape-proof, has long captured the public’s imagination. For decades, the penitentiary served as an inspiration for movies based on the real events that took place behind its walls. In 1995, one year removed from the highly successful release of the prison drama The Shawshank Redemption, came Murder in the First. Loosely based on the trial of Henri Young (a case that would change how prisoners on the island were treated), the film’s greatest attribute is the performance of Kevin Bacon, who is completely unrecognizable in the role.

Bacon’s iconic performance aside, Murder in the First is one of many films with Alcatraz as its focal point that spend too much time portraying the institution as a symbol of barbarity that turns hardened criminals into anti-heroes,...

‘Dexter: Original Sin’ May Have Set a Benchmark in Getting Prequels Right and I Can’t Wait to See What Season 2 Has in Store
Image
In an era where franchises dominate both TV and film, lackluster sequels, prequels, and reboots have become all too common. So when Showtime announced Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel to one of its biggest hits following the vigilante killer Dexter Morgan, public skepticism was inevitable.

Fans feared that a prequel might dilute the beloved series, as is often the case with franchise extensions, especially after the mixed reception of Dexter: New Blood. However, Original Sin proved those doubts wrong.

Now that the prequel has been released, many have come to appreciate it as one of the best prequels in recent years. And like many others, I’m also eager to see what it has in store for a potential next season.

How Dexter: Original Sin defied skepticism to become a standout prequel

Sheridan is best known for his expansive Yellowstone universe spanning multiple spin-offs, which served as an inspiration for Phillips to explore the origins of the beloved TV character, Dexter, through a prequel series.

How Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone inspired Dexter prequel Original Sin

In an interview, Phillips revealed that he loves the Western drama series and “had seen Yellowstone, 1883, and 1923.” Inspired by Sheridan’s approach, Paramount executive Chris McCarthy challenged him...

Image
Exclusive: Emmy winners John Lithgow and Jimmy Smits are set to reprise their roles of Arthur Mitchell aka the Trinity Killer and Miguel Prado, respectively, in the Showtime original series Dexter: Resurrection. The show has been in production in New York since January.

For playing the diabolical Trinity Killer, Lithgow received an Emmy Award, Critics’ Choice Award, and a SAG Award as well as a Golden Globe nomination. Smits received an Emmy nomination for his Season 3 portrayal of Miguel, the Ada-turned-lawbreaker hellbent on revenge.

At this point, fans of the ‘Dexter’-verse aren’t surprised when news emerges that dead people are being resurrected. Especially when Lithgow is concerned, as he appeared in flashback scenes in the limited series Dexter: New Blood. The New Blood continuation series is titled Resurrection, so at this point, anything goes. This is Smits’ return to the franchise,...

“Dexter: Original Sin” Comes to SteelBook Blu-ray in June
Image
“Dexter: Original Sin” will be released on SteelBook Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD on June 10 via Paramount.

Created by original “Dexter” showrunner Clyde Phillips, the prequel series takes place in Miami 1991 — 15 years before the first season of “Dexter.” When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter Morgan (Patrick Gibson) must learn to channel his inner darkness.

With the guidance of his father (Christian Slater), he adopts a code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.

Special Features:

Patrick Gibson, Christian Slater, Molly Brown, Christina Milian, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, Reno Wilson, Patrick Dempsey, and Sarah Michelle Gellar star, with Michael C. Hall narrating as Dexter’s inner voice.

“He’s an unreliable narrator”: I’m in Awe of ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ True Genius With Harry That Makes the Original Show Much, Much Better
Image
Watching Dexter: Original Sin has completely changed the way I see Dexter as a whole. For years, I bought into the idea that Harry Morgan was the wise and composed father figure who saved his adoptive son from becoming a mindless killer and gave him a purpose with the ‘Code.’

Dexter | Credit: Showtime

The original series painted his character as a man who, despite his questionable methods, genuinely cared for Dexter and did his best to raise him under a strict moral code. However, Original Sin flips the narrative, revealing a Harry we never expected, adding depth to Dexter’s character and his psychological conflicts.

The prequel spin-off Dexter: Original Sin reveals the real Harry Morgan

Given Harry Morgan died ten years before the events of the original series, we only ever saw him through Dexter’s (Michael C. Hall) memories – memories that, as it turns out were unreliable at best.

Image
Dexter: Original Sin, the prequel spin-off, focuses on the early life of the titular antihero and his journey to becoming the avenging serial killer that viewers fell in love with in the original Showtime series. And the show has opened new possibilities for the franchise’s redemption after the disappointing sequel, New Blood.
