Jack Black Ruined His Role In A Sylvester Stallone Sci-Fi Movie
Image
When "School of Rock" debuted in 2003, it felt as if Jack Black just came out of nowhere to assert himself as one of the best comedic stars of the early 2000s. A man with his outsized charisma seemed like he could march into a Hollywood studio and charm the execs into giving him a leading role, and that's very much how it felt for kids who saw his breakthrough family comedy. In reality, of course, things didn't quite work that way.

Black's breakout role actually came three years prior with 2000's "High Fidelity," after which he showed up in films like "Shallow Hal" and "Orange County" before gifting us all with the unendingly charming classic that is "School of Rock," becoming a superstar in the process. He's remained in the spotlight ever since, most recently by leading the box office smash that is "A Minecraft Movie." But if you cast...

'Howard the Duck' Documentary About Marvel's Disastrous First Theatrical Feature Acquired by Anchor Bay [Exclusive]
Image
Long before the MCU was raking in billions and telling large, interconnected stories with beloved characters like Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Captain America, there was Howard the Duck. Marvel's first theatrical feature film, which tried to capitalize on the success of the wisecracking, womanizing anthropomorphic duck, was a legendary disaster that had the comic book giant reeling for over a decade from its failure. For as plagued with controversy, contractual disputes, and odd creative choices as it is, though, its tale is fascinating. A new documentary titled Howard the Doc (Or: How I Learned to Start Quacking and Love the Bomb) now looks to tell that story for the first time in film form. Collider can exclusively share that Anchor Bay Entertainment has acquired the project and will release it in theaters this fall, followed by a physical and streaming release.

Howard the Doc takes viewers on a deep dive...

Before ‘Ted Lasso’, There Was a Similar 37 Year Old Kevin Costner Movie That Every Studio Rejected
Image
Way before Ted Lasso charmed us with its underdog charm and fish-out-of-water feels, Kevin Costner had already played a similar game, but back in the ’80s. Nearly 37 years ago, Costner starred in a sports flick that shared major Ted Lasso energy: heart, grit, and a whole lot of emotional payoff.

However, every studio flat-out rejected it. And while it didn’t have a mustache-wearing football coach at its center, it proved that feel-good sports stories don’t need hype to score big. Sometimes, they just need a heart.

Long before Ted Lasso gave us locker room therapy sessions, Ron Shelton’s Bull Durham was out here playing a very different kind of game, and studios didn’t want anything to do with it.

Image
One of AppleTV+’s most talked-about apocalyptic shows just took a huge step towards its return to screens. Led by an all-star cast including Rebecca Ferguson and Tim Robbins, Silo delivered huge viewership for the streamer when it debuted in 2023, and the second season continued to build an audience for the mystery series set in a toxic future where communities exist in huge underground bunkers called Silos. Now, a new social media post has confirmed that Season 3 has now wrapped.

Including a celebratory behind-the-scenes image of Fergusson, the post confirms that the new season is in the can, and now the hefty amount of post-production can begin. Currently, there has been no word on when fans can expect to see Season 3 debut on the platform, but chances are it will be some time early in 2026. 'Silo' Season 3 Digs Up a Massive Update
Image
We're officially one step closer to stepping back inside Silo 18. Apple TV+ announced via X with a behind-the-scenes photo that filming has wrapped on Season 3 of its critically acclaimed dystopian series Silo starring Rebecca Ferguson. Work isn't done just yet on the Hugh Howey adaptation, though, as the series lead previously teased to Collider and later confirmed that the fourth chapter of Juliette's story will be filming back-to-back with the upcoming season. For those at home, however, it means the countdown is on until the show picks up from where that shocking finale left off. A release date has yet to be set.

Based on Howey's Wool trilogy and helmed by Graham Yost, Silo has centered on the remnants of humanity who have been kept sheltered from the inhospitable conditions outside in deep, suffocating multi-layered facilities known as Silos. The series has primarily followed Juliette Nichols as her investigations...

Silo Season 3 Gets Major Filming Update With BTS Photo Of Rebecca Ferguson
Image
Siloseason 3 completes a major milestone, celebrating the occasion with a photo of star and executive producer Rebecca Ferguson. The Silo season 2 finale begins to explain how the show's dystopian world came to be, referring to a dirty bomb and issues between the U.S. and Iran. It introduced new characters, a reporter and a politician, who will be key to unraveling the story. But the end is not in sight just yet, considering that Apple TV+ has confirmed that the popular Hugh Howey adaptation will end with season 4.

The streamer has confirmed that Silo season 3 has wrapped filming, sharing a photo of Ferguson from behind the scenes. The Golden Globe-nominated actor, who plays Juliette Nichols, can be seen standing in the center of the frame while doing 'rock on' signs with her hands. The show's third installment does not have a release date yet. However, given that filming has concluded,...

The Underrated Comedy That Jack Black Is (Surprisingly) Most Proud Of
Image
Jack Black and Kyle Gass first met in the mid-1980s, when the two young men were performing with the Actors' Gang, a performance troupe from Culver City, California. They bonded over their mutual taste in music, and the pair would end up spending a lot of time together at Gass' apartment, where Gass would teach Black how to play the guitar. By 1994, they had written one (1) song together, and performed live for the first time. As the lore goes, they hadn't settled on a band name yet, and put out a few choices to the audience. Their choices were the simple Pets or Meat, the silly Balboa's Biblical Theater, or Gass' favorite, The Axe Lords Featuring Gorgazon's Mischief. Eventually, though, the pair sort of insisted the audience choose Tenacious D, a term they got from a local basketball announcer (as in: tenacious defense).

Few remember the "Tenacious D" TV specials,...

The 10 Worst HBO Shows Ever
Image
Long considered the gold standard of television, HBO continues to dominate the small screen with broadcast hits and streaming successes (via the platform Max). In the 2020s alone, it's produced a range of shows that mostly define what audiences expect from modern TV. Just as every crime drama has aspired to be "The Wire" or "The Sopranos" since the early 2000s, now every corporate thriller wants to be "Succession," every teen drama "Euphoria," and every fantasy "Game of Thrones." Of course, not every one of these aspiring shows can reach the high bar HBO has set -- and that includes its own series.

Indeed, HBO has developed its fair share of duds in the past. Sometimes, it seems as though they desired to repeat the success of previous triumphs like "Sex and the City" or "Veep"; others might have gotten too swept up in the ambitious vision of once-reliable artists...

Green Lantern Star Ryan Reynolds Reveals The Biggest Things He Learned While Making The Failed 2011 DC Movie
Image
Ryan Reynolds has never shied away from letting the world know that he hated Green Lantern. The 2011 movie was a critical and commercial flop that very nearly killed the actor's career (he wouldn't regain his leading man status in Hollywood until after Deadpool's release in 2016).

During a recent appearance at the Time 100 Summit in New York City, Reynolds admitted that Green Lantern is his 2-year-old son Olin's "favourite movie," and explained that he "learned all the most amazing lessons I could ever have in the creative space from that movie."

Elaborating on the latter point, Reynolds said, "A lot of people when they talk about things, they frame it like a Ted Talk or something, where it's like, 'I knew at the time.' I realized I was internalizing these ideas but I couldn't have told you at the time, 'This is what it is.' But too much money,...

There’s a Reason ‘The Studio’s’ Griffin Mill Feels Familiar: Tim Robbins Connection Explained
Image
Hollywood loves its sassy callbacks and reboots, and no one understands that better than Seth Rogen; his new AppleTV+ show, The Studio, is a testament to the same. For cinephiles who know their stuff well, the similarities of Griffin Mill with an iconic 1992 movie character stick out as obviously as a sore thumb.

To the novice viewer, Bryan Cranston as Griffin Mill might seem like another menacing studio boss who couldn’t care less about his employees. But for anyone who has been around long enough to remotely know the 1992 movie The Player, this name hits different. And no, it is not a coincidence, it is very much done on purpose, it is nerd bait!

Kevin Costner Took Vodka Shots & Hit Batting Cages To Earn Bull Durham Role: ‘They Didn’t Know Who He Was Yet

Kevin Costner Batting Cage Night(Photo Credit –Instagram/Prime Video)

Before Kevin Costner became the go-to guy for American epics, he was just an actor trying to prove he could swing like a pro. And for Bull Durham, he didn’t wait for the cameras to roll to show off his skills, he hit vodka, batting cages, and the parking lot to lock down the role of Crash Davis.

Writer/director Ron Shelton recalled the wild pre-filming ritual in an interview with The Ringer, Costner had already been brought onto the project, but he wasn’t exactly a household name. So, he decided to show, not tell, he had the grit and grace to play a washed-up minor leaguer with poetry in his soul and swagger in his stance.

“We put a bunch of quarters in the slot,” Shelton said. “People were walking by him all the time. They didn...

‘The Studio’ Easter eggs: 4 inside jokes you might have missed
Image
Los Angeles plays itself in the new Apple TV+ comedy series The Studio.

The scathing Hollywood satire from co-creator, -writer, -director, and star Seth Rogen is perhaps the most accurate portrayal of the entertainment industry in years, featuring not just several celebrity camoes but many famous locations around the city (including the Warner Bros. lot and Burbank’s Smokehouse restaurant).

“We wanted to paint a real, very accurate picture of a Hollywood movie studio,” Rogen said earlier this month after the show’s premiere at the South by Southwest Film and TV Festival in Austin, Texas. “We wanted to use people that you believe a studio would get excited about, so you believe people who love film would be passionate about.”

“I remember watching the Entourage movie, and they’re having a big party, and Bob Saget is the most famous guy there,” Rogen added. “I love the guy but it’s always like,...

Bryan Cranston's The Studio Character Is A Deep Cut For Movie Nerds
Image
"The Studio," Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's newest series, is a hilarious satire of Hollywood and a love letter to its rich history. When Rogen's character -- a studio chief named Matt Remick -- visits work every day, he overhears a tour guide talk about how the lot is a temple of movie magic. It's a sentiment he wants to believe in, yet he's disillusioned with the system and feels like his workplace is more like a tomb. Indeed, Matt hates his studio's insistence on creating billion-dollar franchises about Kool Aid characters at the expense of genuine art, although he still has to answer to one man: Griffin Mill (Bryan Cranston).

Griffin is a billionaire studio overlord who's solely motivated by profit, so much so that he's happy to bury a swansong Martin Scorsese project about the Jonestown cult. After all, an auteur-driven movie about people "drinking the Kool...

After 'The Studio,' Fans Should Revisit Bruce Willis in 'The Player'
Image
Seth Rogen's new comedy series might feel fresh, but it's not exactly original. The Studio, which is streaming on Apple TV+, follows a fictional studio executive as he meets with real-life actors in a show with the main purpose of satirizing Hollywood. The Studio is not the first show or movie to do this, as The Player had a near-identical premise but with a plot that makes it much more like a thriller than a comedy. The Studio even makes at least one reference to the film.

The Player was based on a hit book and received critical acclaim when it came out, with 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film might have gone under a few people's radars as it was distributed by a small studio that was absorbed by Warner Bros. However, it's now streaming on Max, and it's worth checking out.

‘The Studio’: Five Takeaways From the Debut of Apple’s Hollywood Satire
Image
[This story contains some spoilers for the first two episodes of The Studio on Apple TV+.]

The idea of a movie studio considering a film based on Kool-Aid — the sugary drink with an anthropomorphic pitcher as logo — sounds just plausible in the current IP-obsessed era of the entertainment business. It’s also just crazy enough to be the inciting incident of Apple TV+’s Hollywood satire The Studio.

The series opener, written by creators Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Alex Gregory, Peter Huyck and Frida Perez, finds movie executive Matt Remick (Rogen) elevated to the head of the fictional Continental Studios after his predecessor, Patty Leigh (Catherine O’Hara, whose character, Rogen has said in interviews, is inspired by former Sony Pictures head Amy Pascal), is ousted following a string of flops. Matt professes over and over to be a cinephile who really, really wants to make great films, but he only gets the top job after assuring his CEO (played by Bryan Cranston...

‘The Studio’ Is a Hilarious Love-Hate Letter to Hollywood
Image
In the new showbiz comedy The Studio, Bryan Cranston has a recurring role as Griffin Mill, the craven movie executive played by Tim Robbins in the 1992 film The Player. It’s not the only homage that The Studio, co-created by and starring Seth Rogen, pays to Robert Altman’s classic movie satire. Every episode features at least one extended shot presented as a Player-esque single shot, a.k.a. a “oner” — the second episode, called “The Oner,” is just that. But the oners are usually presented in self-aware fashion, with...

The Net (1995)
The Net | Bill Gates was supposed to play the villain, director confirms
The Net (1995)
1995’s cyber-thriller The Net starred Sandra Bullock – but it nearly co-starred Bill Gates as the villain. More on the story here.

Go all the way back to 1995, and the cyberthriller The Net envisaged a world where you could get internet access on a beach, where you ordered pizza on a computer, and where some people used the world wide web for nefarious reasons. Pah, bloody movies, making stuff up.

The director of the film was Irwin Winkler, the Oscar-winning producer of movies such as Rocky, Rocky IV, The Right Stuff and Goodfellas. And he’s the latest guest on the Film Stories podcast, as he promotes his new movie, The Alto Knights. There’s a review of that at the bottom of this article.

With The Net though, a tale did the rounds that Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Bill Gates was in line to play the villain of the film.

‘The Studio’ Review: Seth Rogen Crafts a Rich Satire of the Hollywood Machine
Image
Is there a major comic actor who purely loves movies more than Seth Rogen?

In Hollywood history, there may be comedians with better track records. But it’s hard to think of anyone who seems so excited to be making cinema, whether enlisting David Gordon Green to bring both indie lyricism and ’80s action-comedy violence into the stoner buddy comedy “Pineapple Express” or staging a full-scale apocalypse with dozens of stars playing themselves in “This Is the End,” his directorial debut alongside longtime creative partner Evan Goldberg.

Now Rogen and Goldberg, alongside co-creators Peter Huyck, Alex Gregory and Frida Perez have undertaken one of their most ambitious projects yet with “The Studio.” It’s a satire of the contemporary and constantly imperiled Hollywood machine, shot in richly cinematic textures and a series of uninterrupted takes, featuring an ensemble packed with both stars in major roles and in playing-themselves cameos. Naturally,...

Oscars Best Supporting Actor breakdown: Why Kieran Culkin is coasting to victory
Image
Originally published Feb. 8, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. Pt; updated Feb. 23, 2025 at 9 p.m. Pt

The Oscars race for Best Supporting Actor has lacked the drama of other categories this year — so it's fitting that the clear favorite is nominated for his role in a comedy. A Real Pain star Kieran Culkin leads Gold Derby's odds to take home the statuette on March 2 — and it doesn't look like Yura Borisov (Anora), Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), or Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice) can do anything about it. But who has the best shot at pulling off the upset? Let's break down the category.

Frontrunner: Kieran Culkin

In A Real Pain, Culkin plays Benji, an obnoxious yet charming drifter who accompanies his cousin, David (Jesse Eisenberg), on a tour through Poland to honor their late grandmother. Two years after his Emmy win for Succession, nearly every Oscar expert predicts...

Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas Novel ‘Climbing in Heels’ Gets Peacock TV Deal, Darren Star Attached
Image
Peacock has won the rights to develop Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas’ upcoming novel “Climbing in Heels” into a TV series, Variety has learned.

Peacock has given the drama project a script-to-series commitment. It was first reported in December that Universal TV was taking the show to market, with Goldsmith-Thomas and Darren Star set to serve as co-writers and executive producers.

“I am thrilled that ‘Climbing In Heels’ was taken off the table so quickly by Peacock,” Goldsmith-Thomas said. “It is the perfect home for Darren and I to bring these fabulously complicated and colorful characters to life”

The official description of the show states that it is “a fictional tale following the rise of five ambitious secretaries navigating the glitzy world of 1980s Hollywood while offering a glimpse into the boys-will-be-boys club and the women who wanted a seat at a table where they were expected to serve.”

The novel will publish...

Peacock Nabs Darren Star & Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas’ ‘Climbing In Heels’ With Big Commitment
Image
Peacock has landed Climbing in Heels, Emily In Paris creator Darren Star and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas’ drama series adaptation of her upcoming novel of the same name, with a script-to-series commitment. This marks the first big sale for Star under the multi-year overall deal he signed with Universal Television last year.

Deadline first reported of Universal TV preemptively buying the rights to Climbing in Heels in December, ahead of the novel’s April 29, 2025 release via St. Martin’s Press. The adaptation was taken in January, with Universal TV sibling Peacock quickly taking it off the market with an aggressive script-to-series bid.

Star, who also created Sex and the City, and Goldsmith-Thomas will co-write and executive produce the proposed series, which he describes as the “ballsy and bawdy love child of Mad Men and Sex and the City.”

A story of friendship, betrayal, survival and ambition, Climbing In Heels follows the rise of...

5 gripping shows like From you need to binge-watch next
Image
After an incredible third installment, the hit sci-fi horror series From was renewed for a 10-episode fourth season in November 2024, and fans have been buzzing with excitement ever since. Everyone wants to know what new horrors await the residents of the nightmarish town, but unfortunately, we won't be seeing this beloved show return to our screens until sometime next year.

From season 4 was confirmed for a 2026 release when the renewal was announced. Production on the fourth season is slated to begin this year in Nova Scotia, where the previous three seasons were shot, but a filming start date has not been revealed. Also, given that this show heavily utilizes special effects, we can likely expect a longer post-production period. This is likely the reason why we won't be seeing From season 4 until next year. It's the lengthy filmmaking process. While this is extremely disappointing for fans, we're expecting the wait...

Green Lantern Director Martin Campbell Reflects On Biggest Regrets With Failed 2011 DC Movie
Image
When the news broke that Goldeneye and Casino Royale director Martin Campbell would helm Green Lantern, it inspired great confidence in the DC Comics adaptation. Unfortunately, the 2011 movie was a disaster.

Very little about it worked; the special effects were subpar, the story was all over the place, and most agreed that Ryan Reynolds was miscast as the heroic Hal Jordan.

Doing the rounds to promote his new movie Cleaner starring Daisy Ridley, Campbell admitted that he wishes Reynolds had got involved with Green Lantern's screenplay.

"Look, Ryan’s terrific," the filmmaker told ComicBook.com. "We actually had a very good time making the movie. It was a tough one to make, and he and Blake Lively were great to work with. He’s always such a witty guy, you know ... I wish he’d written the script! I think he would have done a great job."

As for what he'd change about Green Lantern,...

Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard Sing ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ on ‘SNL50,’ But Don’t Reference Sinéad O’Connor Controversy
Image
Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard appeared to honor Sinéad O’Connor during “SNL50: The Anniversary Special” on Sunday night.

The duo, who also performed during the “Saturday Night Live” concert special two nights prior, this time performed the Prince song, “Nothing Compares 2 U.” The 1985 track was made famous by O’Connor when she recorded it for her second studio album, “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got,” in 1990.

In 1992, O’Connor performed a cover of Bob Marley’s “War” on “Saturday Night Live.” At the end of the episode, hosted by Tim Robbins, she ripped up a photograph of Pope John Paul II. As she threw the pieces onto the floor, she said, “Fight the real enemy.” Following the performance, she shared that she made the move as an effort to call out sexual abuse happening in the Catholic Church.

She was then banned by “Saturday Night Live,” mocked...

Berlin According to…’Paul’ Director Denis Côté
Image
Ahead of returning to the Berlin Film Festival to premiere his latest auteur film, the feature documentary Paul, Denis Côté talked to THR about how to navigate the festival frenzy.

Throughout his career, the Canadian auteur has deliberately shunned big-budget features or mainstream Hollywood to make low-budget films out of French-speaking Quebec. His latest documentary, Paul, portrays a young man who, beset by depression and social anxiety, finds refuge in serving women who invite him to clean their homes.

Before Paul debuts in Berlin with a world premiere on Feb. 15, Côté revealed to THR what he’s looking forward to, and what he is aiming to avoid, during his latest appearance at the Berlinale.

You’re a Berlinale veteran. How are you feeling ahead of this year’s festival?

I’m amazed that despite changing directors, Berlinale keeps following my work and inviting me. My films are fragile art films,...

'I Wish He Had Written the Script': Green Lantern Director Addresses Ryan Reynolds' Jokes About the Movie
Image
Ryan Reynolds is now automatically linked to the role of Deadpool, which he has played in different forms for over a decade and a half. However, in between his commitment to the Merc with a Mouth, Reynolds played a different superhero in 2011's Green Lantern.

Reynolds first played a different version of Deadpool in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but it wasn't until 2016 that he got his own standalone film the way he had envisioned it. In 2011, he took a role as DC Comics character Hal Jordan/ Green Lantern but the movie wasn't the success Reynolds had hoped, and has spent the last decade poking fun at the movie. Speaking to Polygon, director Martin Campbell revealed his honest thoughts on Reynolds' ongoing mockery of the film.

The Best Viking Movies of All Time
Image
Viking movies have been a consistent film genre since the 1950s, but the concept has received a place in pop culture due to the widely successful TV series Vikings Valhalla and its predecessor, Vikings. The movies based on these Norse people have varied in prominence and historical accuracy. However, most of them cover similar themes, focusing on the brutal and brave lifestyle of the Viking warriors.

Many fans of the Viking genre are interested in the historical accuracy of the narrative but are also invested in the entertainment and cohesiveness of the storyline. Some successful movies have impressed these viewers, including The Vikings and The Northman. Other underrated films, such as The 13th Warrior, have also captivated viewers despite the initial criticism they received. This collection of Viking movies is the overall best in the niche genre.

Why Did the Algorithm Choose This ‘Silo’ Season 2 Character?
Image
Editor's Note: Spoilers ahead for Silo Season 2.Silo Season 2 ends on a fiery note, and one that leaves many things up in the air for the upcoming Season 3. Among the many questions we have is one related to the Sims family: Why did the Algorithm only allow Camille (Alexandria Riley) to stay in the vault and not her husband Robert (Common) and their son Anthony (Oscar Coleman)? They are in the middle of a rebellion that is threatening the survival of their silo, so, given how Robert is the Judge and has just become Bernard Holland's (Tim Robbins) shadow, shouldn't he be allowed in, too? What is so special about Camille that made the Algorithm single her out?...
