12 Best Travel Movies Ever, Ranked
Image
More than 1.4 billion people are estimated to have traveled in 2024, while the number of tourists was expected to grow to more than five billion in 2025 for the first time ever. We're no sociologists, so we won't pretend to know exactly why travelers feel the need to escape from their everyday lives in search of ... what exactly? What beckons billions of people the world over to traverse the roads, seas, and skies to arrive at a new destination beyond their familiar surroundings? Many things: pleasure, entertainment, adventure, peer pressure, Fomo, Yolo, Ig-worthy backdrops for their social media (#takemeback), and self-discovery.

Cinema has sought to capture this essential drive for a century. We're celebrating the best by highlighting travel movies, which we define as "movies where characters go from A to B for personal reasons." So we won't be looking at movies about traveling for work ("Midnight Run") or set in a...

Tom Cruise Advises Next Generation to Learn What Isn’t Taught in Film School: “Understand the Lens and What It Can Do”
Image
Tom Cruise has some key advice for the next wave of actors.

As one of the biggest movie stars in the world, he didn’t attend film school or have a technically trained background. Instead, Cruise told the audience on Monday while receiving the British Film Institute Fellowship honor that he learned his skills by watching movies.

And Cruise encourages the next generation of talent to focus on what goes into making a movie. “It is important to understand the tools around you. There is tech,” he said. “It is like understanding the stage as an actor but for a lot of artists it is not taught in film school: how to understand the lens and what it can do, and why there is eye movement and recognize the effect it has.”

The Risky Business star continued, “I always tell actors, ‘Spend time in the editing room, produce a movie,...

12 Hollywood Celebrities Who Are Huge NBA Fans
Image
The NBA has always been part of Hollywood. Not that they run it or anything, but it might as well be their favorite game. Over the years, basketball has embedded itself in many places, gaining a huge fan following and becoming a key actor in the world of entertainment. At this time and age, it’s not just about respect and scores but also about the spotlight and showboating, something Hollywood loves.

Whether it’s appearing in movie plots, celebrity interviews, or red carpet conversations, the NBA has found a permanent place in the heart of Hollywood. Many Hollywood actors are die-hard NBA fans. You can see some of them courtside more than some season ticket holders, and reacting to buzzer-beaters like their lives depend on it.

Some of these actors’ obsessions have even come on screen, writing, producing, or starring in basketball-related movies that genuinely show their love for the sport.

"He's Like A Crooner That Knows How To Carve Up A Monologue": Tom Cruise Reflects On Filming Jack Nicholson's Famous Courtroom Speech In A Few Good Men
Image
Tom Cruise discusses filming A Few Good Men’s famous courtroom scene with Jack Nicholson. Going toe-to-toe with an Oscar-winner may not have been as dangerous as jumping out of an airplane, but future-daredevil Cruise nevertheless faced a major challenge as the star of Rob Reiner’s Aaron Sorkin-penned 1992 military courtroom drama, acting opposite one of film history’s most revered figures. The tension in Cruise and Nicholson’s big A Few Good Men showdown moment was as palpable as anything in the Mission: Impossible movies, the scene going down in history as an acting masterclass.

Cruise recently recalled shooting that 1992 hit film alongside Nicholson, discussing the veteran actor’s process, and praising the Oscar-winner’s thorough understanding of how to use his voice and body (via Deadline):

“He was finding his character. And you could see every movement slowed. He became more and more centered as we were going through it.

Tom Cruise Talks Dueling With Jack Nicholson, Forcing Studios To Embrace International Markets & Why He Spent Years Avoiding Proposals For ‘Top Gun’ Sequels
Image
Seven films down with an eighth and final edition launching in cinemas this month, Mission: Impossible is undoubtedly one of contemporary cinema’s most enduring franchises.

But back in 1996, what made a young Tom Cruise, red hot in Hollywood thanks to hits like A Few Good Men and Interview with the Vampire, board the spy thriller?

“It was the music,” Cruise joked this evening in London, where he took part in a wide-ranging discussion about his career onstage at the British Film Institute. “I loved the theme music.”

The first Mission film was Cruise’s first credit as a producer, and he told the crowd in London that he sought the franchise out because he was interested in investigating how he could change the action genre.

“It was about looking at Mission and thinking ‘what can we do with action’,” he said. “It was about how I can evolve action...

5 Movie Scenes Made Possible by Torture
Image
We know this is a shock to some people, but movies are make-believe. They’re just actors playing pretend, not real nuclear physicists or secret agents or mall cops. By “some people,” of course, we mean renowned directors, who don’t seem to understand that actors can display emotion without being relentlessly harrowed.

5 Paul Thomas Anderson Scared Mark Wahlberg With Firecracker Noises for Three Days

A huge reason why the drug deal scene in Boogie Nights is so unbearably tense is the random explosions of firecrackers thrown by a boy whose presence is mercifully never explained. It seems like that would be bad enough in the moment, but to get Wahlberg really on edge, Thomas Anderson made a habit of slapping two-by-fours together to simulate the sound even when Cracker Boy wasn’t around. That’s a real Pavlovian response we’re watching.

Tom Cruise praises Nicole Kidman on Eyes Wide Shut, cites Jack Nicholson’s influence on him
Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Tom Cruise has worked with some of the greatest directors ever. But at the top might be Stanley Kubrick, who directed Cruise and then-wife Nicole Kidman in his final film, 1999’s Eyes Wide Shut. And despite a nasty divorce, Cruise still has wonderful things to say about Kidman – along with some other notable Hollywood luminaries.

Cruise recently spoke to Sight and Sound (via Deadline) for the May issue, wherein he recalled meeting Kubrick and ensuring that Kidman get the role of his wife in Eyes Wide Shut. “I flew out to his house and I landed in his backyard. I read the script the day before and we spent the day talking about it. I knew all of his films. I spoke to [The Color of Money director Martin] Scorsese about him and [The Firm director/Eyes Wide Shut co-star] Sydney Pollack… so I knew what he did and how he worked. Then...

Dennis Hopper movies: 15 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Dennis Hopper was the Oscar-nominated performer who experienced many ups-and-downs throughout his career, with his off-screen antics often overshadowing his onscreen talent. Yet many of his movies have stood the test of time. Let's take a look back at 15 of Hopper's greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Born in 1936, Hopper made his movie debut at the age of 19 in "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955), where he became fast friends with James Dean. He had an even bigger role in "Giant" (1956), which would be Dean's last film before his untimely death in 1955. Hopper struggled for several years trying to find his voice, making small appearances in such films as "Cool Hand Luke" (1967) and "True Grit"(1969).

He burst onto the scene with the counterculture phenomenon "Easy Rider" (1969), which he also directed and co-wrote (with co-star Peter Fonda and Terry Southern). The story of two bikers (Hopper and Fonda) traveling across the country...

Tom Cruise Avoids Political Question at Mission: Impossible Press Event
Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning (2025)
During a press event in Seoul promoting Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Tom Cruise declined to respond to a question concerning former President Donald Trump’s proposed tariff policy on films produced abroad. The question referred to the film’s international shooting locations and whether the production might be subject to such tariffs.

“I’d like to ask this question to anybody who’s up for it,” the reporter began, according to a translated exchange at the event. “I saw that it was filmed in many different locations around the world, including Africa. We all are aware of the tariffs that President Trump has been imposing on overseas productions and films. So, is this particular movie under that tariff? And how much of the film was shot overseas?”

Cruise responded off-mic to the moderator: “We’d rather answer questions about the movie. Thank you.” The moderator acknowledged the direction and moved the conversation forward.

Tom Cruise has spoken for the first time about how he suggested to Stanley Kubrick that his then wife Nicole Kidman star opposite him in 1999s Eyes Wide Shut “because obviously she’s a great actress.”

The actor makes the rare public acknowledgement of Kidman’s thespian abilities in the May issue of Sight and Sound, the film magazine published by the British Film Institute.

Cruise will be honoured by the BFI on Monday with the awarding of a distinguished BFI Fellowship.

He joins the ranks of other BFI Fellows including giants of the calibre of David Lean, Bette Davis, Akira Kurosawa, Orson Welles, Thelma Schoonmaker, Derek Jarman, Martin Scorsese, Satyajit Ray, Barbara Broccoli, Michael G Wilson, Spike Lee and Christopher Nolan.

Kevin Costner’s Hollywood Breakout Owes Everything to The Best NBC Crime Drama Show Starring Don Johnson
Image
Kevin Costner has established himself as one of the biggest stars in Hollywood through his grit and talent. While the 70-year-old has starred in dozens of projects, it was one of the 80s’ superhit shows, not even his own, that defined his career.

Like every aspiring star, the multiple Oscar winner was once a promising actor trying to find his footing in Hollywood. It was Brian De Palma’s breakout hit, The Untouchables, in 1987, that changed the script for Costner. However, as is the intrigue of Hollywood, the Yellowstone star was not the first choice of De Palma for playing the charismatic G-Man in the slick action film.

In fact, Costner landed the role of the Prohibition agent only when De Palma’s original choice Don Johnson refused. Johnson’s refusal, on the other hand, can be attributed to his success as the lead actor of one of NBC’s iconic dramas.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ Will Ruin Christmas in the Best Way Possible
Image
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is all set to hit the theaters right in the middle of the holiday season. Announced for a pre-Christmas release on December 17, 2027, this new chapter in Middle-earth is perfectly timed to pull you out of your cozy holiday routine and into a world of epic adventure.

As a lifelong fan of the franchise, I can’t help but grin at the thought of history repeating itself, because if you remember, the original Lord of the Rings trilogy also dropped around Christmas, turning December into a magical mix of festive cheer and Middle-earth mayhem. The release will surely shake up Christmas plans for many, but what true fan would miss it even for a second?

Netflix’s Ted Sarandos Says He Loves Movies. Do You Believe Him?
Image
It’s been a long time coming. Like Jack Nicholson’s Col. Nathan R. Jessup in “A Few Good Men,” finally admitting that he ordered the Code Red (“You’re goddamn right I did!”), Ted Sarandos, the visionary co-ceo of Netflix, recently outed himself as someone who believes that the experience of going to see a movie in a movie theater is an antiquated idea. In an interview with Time magazine editor-in-chief Sam Jacobs at the Time100 Summit on April 23, Sarandos said, “Folks grew up thinking, ‘I want to make movies on a gigantic screen and have strangers watch them play in the theater for two months, and people cry and [there are] sold-out shows.’ It just doesn’t happen very much anymore.”

Asked by Jacobs if the movie-theater experience is “outdated,” Sarandos said he thought it was. And asked if the desire to make movies “for movie theaters, for the communal experience” is “an outmoded idea,...

“Bhog, A Fear Feast Of Unimaginable Ramifications” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Not a fan of the horror genre, I was taken aback by how shaken I was with the business on hand in Bhog (in Bengali on Hoichoi) largely for its central performance. Actor Anirban Bhattacharya’s jolting performance as a working-class bloke who transforms into a possessed entity, right in front of our disbelieving eyes, echoes Jack Nicholson in The Shining.

There is an unsettling normalcy to Atin’s behaviour, his environment and his near ones at the start. Admittedly, Atin lost his mother when he was young. But he was more than compensated for by a mother-figure Pushpa (Sudipa Basu), whom Atil treats with a mixture of reverence and mischief.

How is he, or we, to know that Pushpa would disappear into thin air, literally with no forwarding address?

There is a chilling finality to the eerie happenings in this sturdily ominous fear feast, based on a short story by Avik Sarkar.

Jack Nicholson May Be a Genius, but I Definitely Don’t Agree With His ‘Lord of the Rings’ Opinion That Didn’t Age Well
Image
Jack Nicholson is a legend, no doubt about it. The man could mumble a half-sentence and somehow sound like the smartest guy in the room. But even geniuses have their off days, and when it comes to The Lord of the Rings, I seriously can’t get behind his opinion, which (to me) feels like one of those takes that aged worse than Gollum’s skincare routine.

In a world where Frodo, Gandalf, and the entire Middle-earth saga are basically sacred, Jack’s old-school take just sounds painfully out of touch now. I get it, not everyone has to love hobbits and epic quests. But come on, this is Lord of the Rings we’re talking about.

MCU Box Office: Marvel Spent Only $130K On Their Cheapest Movie & Enjoyed Whopping 299% Higher Earnings – No It’s Not The Incredible Hulk!

Marvel’s Most Low-Budget Movie Ever(Photo Credit –Marvel/Hotstar)

When people think of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the mind often jumps straight to billion-dollar box office figures, jaw-dropping VFX sequences, and star-studded ensembles. Marvel is, without a doubt, a machine built on scale. But it wasn’t always like this. The MCU had to prove itself before the sprawling multiverse, the time travel plots, and reality-shifting battles. And that journey started with tighter budgets, sharper storytelling, and much more risk.

It’s easy now to assume that every Marvel film has a blank cheque attached to it. With Disney’s financial power and Marvel Studios’ track record, budgets often climb into the hundreds of millions today. But go back far enough, and you’ll find a time when every dollar counted. Every explosion had to be justified, and every casting decision weighed not just for character fit but affordability.

The 7 Best New Movies Streaming on Max Right Now
Image
Max‘s May film acquisitions include gems that came out both 80 years ago and as recently as just a few months ago. Indeed, the streaming service’s new movies range from 2024’s longest Best Picture contender to a classic Hollywood musical and an Oscar-winning, genre-bending 2004 drama. In case that was not enough, a pair of iconic horror movies and one fantasy masterpiece have also made their way to the platform this month.

Here are seven of the best movies that are now streaming on Max in May.

“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (Focus Features) “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (2004)

When he was promoting “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” Jim Carrey equated getting Charlie Kaufman’s script for the film with watching Moses come down from Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments and winning the lottery. They are apt metaphors for a film that feels, quite simply, miraculous.

When Jack Nicholson Revealed The Real Reason For Passing The Legendary Role Of Michael Corleone In The Godfather
Image
Jack Nicholson Turned Down Michael Corleone In The Godfather ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

The release of The Godfather marked the entry of a true cinematic marvel in theatres. With its rich and nuanced storytelling, the story became a classic hit, thanks to the powerful performance delivered by its actors. One such signature character from the movie was Michael Corleone, played by Al Pacino.

But here’s something not everyone knows: the role of Michael Corleone, Pacino’s iconic breakout, almost went to someone else entirely. And not just anyone, it practically went to Jack Nicholson, arguably Hollywood’s most charismatic actor of his generation. Before Pacino ever delivered that cold-blooded line, “It’s not personal, Sonny. It’s strictly business,” the role was of Jack’s to take.

Jack Nicholson, riding high off the success of Easy Rider and already becoming a household name, was in a prime position. Studio heads saw the commercial appeal.

The Beloved Tom Cruise Drama That's Dominating Tubi's Charts
Image
Our time on this planet is agonizingly brief, which, among other bummers, means that we'll leave loads of great movies unwatched. Ultimately, you've got to prioritize which filmmakers and types of films matter the most to you, while, and this is crucial, making sure you block out time to screen movies that are well out of your wheelhouse. Dive into the wilds of experimental cinema. Explore the many modes of African filmmaking. Acquaint yourself with Italian neorealism. The broader your horizons, the better you understand the lives and struggles of people in places you may never personally visit. As Roger Ebert once noted, movies are "empathy machines." Also, you might just find a new favorite filmmaker along the way (like I did with Chadian director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun via The Criterion Channel).

You should always be craving new experiences, but, let's face it, sometimes... Okay, a lot of the time you...

‘Dangerous Animals’ Director Sean Byrne Used Real Sharks and Praises Jai Courtney’s Serial Killer Turn [Exclusive]
Image
In a crowded sea of horror this summer season, Dangerous Animals stands apart. Not just for its originality but for the way it upends a summer genre staple: shark horror.

Dangerous Animals swims into theaters on June 6, 2025, and stars Hassie Harrison (“Yellowstone”), Josh Heuston (“Heartbreak High”), and Jai Courtney (The Suicide Squad) as the unsettling killer featured in our exclusive image (above).

The Loved Ones and The Devil’s Candy director Sean Byrne and screenwriter Nick Lepard blend the shark movie with serial killer thriller to exhilarating results, with Byrne injecting his style of intense horror to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Nerve-fraying horror aside, it’s the type of bold reinvention that’s long overdue in this particularly crowded subgenre.

It’s man who’s the most dangerous one here. Dangerous Animals may feature cinema’s favorite aquatic predator, but they’re merely animals being used as...

I’m Still Terrified of Tom Cruise’s Scariest Interview That He Needs to Evoke Again in His Upcoming Movie as a Villain
Image
“You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth!” Sure, that line belongs to Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men, but if you’ve ever watched Tom Cruise stare down Australian journalist Peter Overton like he was about to laser-beam him into next week, you’d think Cruise wrote it himself.

Yes, I still remember that 2000 interview like it was yesterday: Cruise, calm but coiled, like a lion in a silk suit, telling Overton to “put your manners back in.” I didn’t just flinch; I froze. That wasn’t a man answering questions; that was a psychological grenade with a press smile.

And now, with Alejandro G. Iñárritu casting Cruise in a role where he tries to save the world but ends up wrecking it? Goosebumps. Real ones! If Cruise leans into that Overton energy, we’re in for something Oscar-worthy, maybe even Magnolia-level magic. Or mayhem.

Since Payne’s “The Holdovers” takes place in 1970, it’s only natural for it to take notes from Ashby’s comedy-dramas. But, it goes further than emulating the visual palette of those movies, providing thematic and characteristic similarities. Tipping his hat to the master, Alexander Payne created one of the best comedy-dramas of recent years.

Ashby delved into other genres too, but he is best known for his comedy-dramas like “Harold & Maude,” “The Last Detail,” “Shampoo,” and “Being There.” Illustrating the counterculture movement of the time in an introspective manner, the social satire of these movies has stood the test of time. Alexander Payne may have created a...

This 1 Scene Has Me Convinced That Kenneth Branagh Was Not Lying About Tom Cruise and His Acting
Image
When I say the name Tom Cruise, the first thing that probably pops into your head might be his high-speed motorcycle chase, a jaw-dropping scene from Mission: Impossible, or his smirk in Top Gun. For decades, he’s been the face of blockbuster entertainment and a global superstar who commands the screen.

But I feel like his million-dollar smile and daredevil stunts often make people overlook how great of an actor he is. So when Kenneth Branagh, one of the finest artists, praised Cruise, I had to revisit one scene that convinced me of his acting talent.

Kenneth Branagh on Tom Cruise’s acting Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire | Vinyl Films

Kenneth Branagh recently dropped a truth bomb about Tom Cruise that I can’t ignore. He acted alongside Cruise in Valkyrie, so we can take his word for it. Moreover, the British Film Institute has awarded him with a BFI Fellowship,...

Kiefer Sutherland Gave One of His Best Performances in a 33 Year Old Movie Where Tom Cruise Overshadowed Him
Image
Kiefer Sutherland can play the protagonist in the story, like Jack Bauer from 24 or Tom Kirkman from Designated Survivor. And he can easily slip into a cruel antagonist, like David from The Lost Boys or Freddie Lee Cobb from A Time to Kill. The variety of roles in Sutherland’s filmography, spread over more than four decades, speaks volumes about the actor.

However, there is one role for which we never appreciated Sutherland enough. In 1992, Sutherland took on the supporting role alongside the likes of Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, and Kevin Bacon in A Few Good Men. He had a limited role in the film as Lt Jonathan Kendrick, but this villain performance of the actor was different from his others.

Kiefer Sutherland’s often-overlooked performance in Tom Cruise’s A Few Good Men Kiefer Sutherland as Lt. Kendrick in a still from A Few Good Men...

Why Stephen King Didn't Let Anyone Else Write His Apple TV+ Series Lisey's Story
Image
Stephen King has only occasionally written film or television adaptations of his own stories, including the 1989 "Pet Sematary" movie, the 1994 miniseries version of "The Stand," and the 2016 film "Cell" (which is King's lowest rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes). Be that as it may, King was adamant that only he would be allowed to adapt "Lisey's Story" for the small screen.

"Lisey's Story" is one of King's most unique books. It's not a horror tale as you would traditionally expect from King, but it is suspenseful. It's mainly a love story that spans decades of marriage between Lisey and Scott Landon: the petty fights, the romantic moments, the "Alice in Wonderland"-style language the couple invents, and the difficulties of sharing a life with a famous creative.

After his death, Lisey is left to sort through her husband's study. There, she comes across the nostalgic objects of their shared memories and his unfinished writing.

1989's Batman Was Nearly A Bizarrely Overcrowded Movie From A Classic James Bond Screenwriter
Image
1989's "Batman" made Tim Burton a box office hero, exposed mass audiences to a truly dark interpretation of the Dark Knight, and ensured Joker actor Jack Nicholson never ran out of money for the rest of his life. The movie was a major success, changing how Hollywood marketed blockbuster movies going forward and influencing every single superhero movie that came in its wake. Burton himself is a big part of why the movie worked as well as it did, holding fast to his artistic vision for the character even as Warner Bros. tried to steer him away from it at multiple turns. But we also wouldn't have that vision without Sam Hamm and Warren Skaaren's script, which contains some of the most memorable lines in superhero movie history, from Joker's "Where does he get those wonderful toys?" to Michael Keaton's legendary "I'm Batman."

Interestingly enough, that script took...

Daniel Day-Lewis movies: 12 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
In the summer of 2017, Oscar-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis surprised Hollywood, London and the entire entertainment world when he revealed that he retired from acting and would make no more films. His final performance in Paul Thomas Anderson's "Phantom Thread" (2017) brought Day-Lewis his sixth Oscar nomination, his eighth Golden Globe nom and his seventh BAFTA bid (losing all three to Gary Oldman for "Darkest Hour").

One of the most respected actors of his generation, Day-Lewis is the only man who has won three Oscars for Best Actor. Those victories were for “My Left Foot” (1989), “There Will Be Blood” (2007), and “Lincoln” (2012). In fact he is one of only three men to win acting Oscars three times; the others are Walter Brennan and Jack Nicholson. In addition, he has won two Best Actor awards each from the Screen Actors Guild and the Golden Globes.

Most importantly (if retirement actually happens), he will...

Even forty-five years after its release, legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick’s cult psychological horror movie ‘The Shining’ is still regarded as a masterpiece of modern horror. And the climactic showdown continues to haunt the viewers. But what if we tell you that The Shining might not have ended the way it did, because there was an alternative ending? What was that ending, and why couldn’t it find a place in the final version of the film? Read on to know these interesting details.

The Shining Plot

The basic plotline of The Shining follows a budding writer and recovering alcoholic, Jack Torrence (played by Jack Nicholson), who takes up the job of a winter caretaker of a secluded hotel and takes his wife (Shelley Duvall) and son (Danny Lloyd) with him. Oscars: Film Academy Revokes, Then Reinstates Screenings Access for Widows and Widowers After Backlash (Exclusive)
Image
Over the past week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences terminated — briefly and, the organization insists, inadvertently — a longstanding courtesy that it had afforded to widows and widowers of people who had been members of the organization, sparking considerable backlash.

Since the 1990s, the Academy has allowed widows and widowers to continue to attend official member screenings in Los Angeles and New York, as they had been able to do with their spouse. But Irene Ramp, the widow of The Graduate screenwriter Buck Henry, says that she arrived at a screening last Saturday only to be told, “We don’t do that anymore.”

Ramp and some 300 others in her situation received written notice from the Academy this week that to “ensure priority access for our Academy members, a population that has grown to 11,000 and will continue to grow, our membership screenings must now be limited to Academy members and their non-press guests.

12 Best Danny DeVito Movies & TV Shows, Ranked
Image
Despite standing less than five-feet tall, Danny DeVito is a giant of the entertainment industry. With literally dozens of credits to his name, DeVito has towered over the film and TV worlds through sheer force of his talent for more than half a century, with no signs of slowing down. While he has made his name and earned his fame as an actor, he's also an accomplished director and a prolific producer. Heck, he has credits for screenwriting, editing, and even soundtracks! DeVito's a cinematic "Renaissance Man," and not just because he starred in a 1994 comedy with that name.

Despite DeVito's gargantuan cinematic contributions, this multi-talented, multi-hyphenated filmmaker has never won an Academy Award, and has only been nominated once, for producing "Erin Brockovich." Yet even while watching his buddies Jack Nicholson and Michael Douglas roll in gold, DeVito stays in good spirits, because that's the guy he is. Well,...

Jack Nicholson offered his home to Anjelica Huston during LA wildfires
Image
For close to two decades, Jack Nicholson and Anjelica Huston were one of Hollywood’s top power couples. And while the flame fizzled, Nicholson proved how much of a card he still is by offering Huston his home as a refuge for her as she evacuated during this year’s wildfires in Los Angeles.

Anjelica Huston recently spoke of how Jack Nicholson reached out, saying, “The phone just rang out of nowhere, and it was him. It’s always a comfort when he calls. It was heartbreakingly sweet. I’ve gone back over it several times in my head, and I think next time I’d accept the invitation.”

Anjelica Huston and Jack Nicholson don’t see each other much anymore, which comes down to a mixture of being busy and construction… “Life gets in the way. Also, for some reason, they’ve been doing endless rerouting and road work near his house,...

Jack Nicholson movies: 45 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Jack Nicholson has been in retirement for a while now. Taking a cue from the title of the last movie he appeared in, 2010’s “How Do You Know,” how do we know? When I talked to Nicholson for this reunion with director James L. Brooks – an unfortunate flop – I asked him why he waited three years to do another movie after his hit, “The Bucket List.” His response: “I’ve been reading scripts. Yes, they are all very similar. You just keep getting these stories about retirement, or the wife dying on you or going to Vegas. I’m definitely at the stage where I just don’t want to make another movie.”

Let’s then applaud this Oscar kingpin, who still holds the record among men for the most nominations and shares most wins (three) for a male actor with Daniel Day-Lewis and Walter Brennan. His victories were for...

The Dark Knight Star Michael Caine Reveals His Reaction To Heath Ledger's Joker
Image
Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" Trilogy benefits from some seriously stellar casting, and among the clearest bullseyes it hit was the decision to cast Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth. The British veteran has the exact right screen presence to match -- and, when necessary, one-up -- the specific energy Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne has, and more than enough gravitas to tell off the billionaire vigilante in a way that's utterly believable.

As a winner of two Academy Awards, Caine has been around the block as an actor and seen some seriously great performances. Still, even he had to do a double take when the trilogy's true Mvp entered the game. "The Dark Knight" remains Heath Ledger's best movie, thanks to his magnificent portrayal of the Joker. Caine's Alfred famously delivers the iconic description of the Joker and others like him in "The Dark Knight" (2008), and in his memoir "Don't Look Back,...

15 Authors Who Hated Movie Adaptations Of Their Books
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

For an author, getting their book adapted into a film can be seen as a great honor. It's a way for their work to be accessible to a wider audience and hopefully spark or renew interest in the original work. While the common adage is that the book is always superior to the movie, it could be argued that many movie adaptations surpass the source material.

Still, there will always be novelists who wish they never got mixed up with Hollywood in the first place. It's understandable for an author to hate an adaptation if it completely misses the point of the book or is just plain bad. But some authors hate stone-cold cinematic classics for one different reason or another. It might be unavoidable to an extent, with authors feeling absolutely precious over their works than anything else. Even...

Image
The Criterion Collection has announced their July 2025 slate of titles, delivering Stanley Kubrick, a film noir classic, an underrated New Hollywood gem, and more. Let’s check out what Criterion has in store:

First up is Fritz Lang’s The Big Heat (spine #1269), a scorcher of a noir that offers Glenn Ford and femme fatale Gloria Grahame in some of their finest performances (and don’t forget Lee Marvin!). With stellar black and white cinematography by Charles Lang (no relation), The Big Heat stands out in a decade crowded with some of the greatest film noirs ever. Special features include two new commentaries, an archival audio interview with director Lang (co-conducted by Peter Boganovich) and interviews with filmmakers Michael Mann and Martin Scorsese.

A pleasant addition is 1971’s Carnal Knowledge (spine #1270), one of just three Mike Nichols films featured in the collection. I always considered Carnal Knowledge one of the...

“We Don’t Have To Spoon Feed”: ‘The Pitt’ Producer Credits Show’s Success to Smart Audience
Image
The Pitt is Max’s latest success story that fans can’t stop talking about. The latest medical drama — which is the first in history for the streamer — debuted in January and garnered acclaim from critics and audiences alike for being the most authentic medical procedural available to watch. The show built up enough of an audience during its 15-episode first-season run that it was able to dethrone The White Lotus atop Max’s streaming charts on more than one occasion. The series was written and created for television by R. Scott Gemmill and stars ER veteran Noah Wyle. During a recent sit-down with CNN, The Pitt producer John Wells spoke about why he thinks the show became such a hit, crediting the smart audience and ability to tell a story that didn’t “spoon-feed” anything to its viewers:

"Audiences are very literate about story and about character, and we...
