This month brings sequels, star-studded adventure films, smart slashers and even Oscar-winning favorites to streamers like Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, Peacock and Max, and we’ve gone ahead and put together a curated list of the best of the best. Yes, there is a new sequel to the 2018 film “A Simple Favor” (see below) and yes, Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively are back for another round of murderous fun.

Snow always lands on top. Ralph Fiennes has been cast as the villainous President Coriolanus Snow in “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.” He joins previously announced cast members Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Maya Hawke as Wiress, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee, Lili Taylor as Mags and Ben Wang as Wyatt.

The formidable leader of Panem has previously been portrayed by Donald Sutherland in the original four films, and in his younger years by Tom Blyth in 2023’s “A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.” Fiennes’ Snow will fall between the two, 40 years after the events of “Songbirds” and 24 years before Katniss Everdeen’s time in the arena.

There were over a dozen producers chasing the project. Liz Lippman and Patrick McNamara brought in the project for Walsh and will be executive produce alongside Sophie de Bruijn.

De Bruijn is a writer and director with a passion for crafting high-energy, emotionally grounded comedies that center unruly female protagonists. In Chicago she studied and performed at the Second City Theater, and got an Mfa in Writing for the Screen and Stage from Northwestern University.

Here’s the synopsis: “A gallery of dynamic characters clash over the possession of a rare Native American artifact in this wildly entertaining modern-day western. Sydney Sweeney is an aspiring country singer who concocts a risky scheme to get some cash in the trailer for Americana.

Writer-director Tony Tost’s crime feature hits theaters Aug. 22 from Lionsgate after premiering at SXSW in 2023. Paul Walter Hauser, Halsey, Eric Dane, Zahn McClarnon and Simon Rex also star in the contemporary Western movie.

Americana centers on a number of people whose paths intersect as they try to track down a rare Native American artifact known as a “ghost shirt.”

“I got a really dumb idea I’d like to run by you,” Sweeney tells Hauser in the trailer. “I think something bad is going down.”

Later, as violence ensues, Halsey exclaims, “Right now, I’m apparently in the middle of a goddamn murder spree.”

Tost, who serves as the showrunner for the Peacock series Poker Face, marks his feature directorial debut with the film that he helmed from his own script.

Lionsgate brings you a new interconnected crime comedy with an all-star cast. Americana is the new film from Tony Tost, who both writes and directs. The new trailer has dropped, and among the critics’ raves, it’s being hailed as “a breath of fresh air” and is “like an early Tarantino film.” Lionsgate produces the film along with Bron Studios and Alex Saks for his Saks Pictures Company. It’s also made in association with Rhea Films and Hercules Film Fund / Creative Wealth Media.

Two of the stylishly violent spy comedies in the Kingsman franchise are finding new life on Hulu, over ten years since the first film made its debut. The movies are based on the Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons comic book series of the same name.

FlixPatrol reports that two Kingsman movies are charting high on the Top Movies on Hulu worldwide list for May 14, 2025. The Secret Service is currently #3 on the charts, with its sequel, The Golden Circle, taking the #2 spot. The only movie performing better than the Kingsman franchise on Hulu right now is Summer of 69, the newly-released Hulu original starring Chloe Fineman and Sam Morelos.

Casting for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is underway, and the production just announced another major cast member playing a previous Hunger Games victor. After the first Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, author Suzanne Collins announced in 2024 that she would be penning a novel focusing on the 50th Hunger Games, of which Haymitch Abernathy is the victor; a movie adaptation was greenlit shortly after. Sunrise on the Reaping is confirmed to be starring Joseph Zada as Haymitch, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, and Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner.

The latest news, via the official Hunger Games Xaccount, is that Mufasa star Kelvin Harrison Jr. will be playing District 3 victor Beetee Latier, previously portrayed by Jeffrey Wright in the 2010s Hunger Games movies. Harrison is the second actor playing one of the movie's adult characters to be announced, following Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee.

Director Michael Pearce’s thriller will begin streaming via Apple TV+ on June 13 — Domhnall Gleeson, Kyle MacLachlan, Fiona Shaw, Edmund Donovan and Rebecca Creskoff round out the cast.

Echo Valley centers on Kate (Moore), who is in the process of grieving a personal tragedy when her daughter, Claire (Sweeney), arrives at night covered in blood following a fight with her boyfriend. This leads the mother-daughter pair down a dangerous path.

“I know what you did,” Gleeson warns in the trailer. “I make one call, and all roads lead back to you.”

Later, Sweeney begins to have second thoughts about her decisions. “I’m freaking out right now because I read that bodies float,” she says in the footage.

By the end of the trailer, a somber Moore promises, “I took care of it — all of it.

Manners maketh man! And it seems like fans are going back to the mantra by revisiting the Kingsman franchise as it's reigning on Hulu charts. The British franchise is a brilliant lighthearted spin on the spy genre, full of humor, heart, and a lot of action. The movies have some brilliant performances and thrilling plots, so, no doubt fans are streaming the beloved films.

Domhnall Gleeson, Fiona Shaw, Edmund Donovan, Albert Jones, and Kyle MacLachlan also star. BAFTA winner Michael Pearce (Beast) directs, and two-time Emmy nominee Brad Ingelsby (Mare of Easttown) wrote the screenplay.

With films like “The Way Back” and “Out of the Furnace,” Brad Ingelsby made a name for himself as one of the better writers in Hollywood. It shouldn’t be surprising that British director Michael Pearce chose Ingelsby’s “Echo Valley” as his first directorial feature, which he didn’t write himself. Pear e has nothing but praise for the “Mare of Easttown” scribe:

“Usually I read either a script which has great characters, but they’re in need of a really compelling story, or I read very genre-driven material, but the characters feel like archetypes and they’re not really developed…when I read Brad’s script, it was in the bull’s-eye where I got everything that I wanted.

Feldheim was brought in to help lead The Walsh Co.’s push into TV, with a primary focus on the company’s renewed relationship with Apple TV+, which extended its overall deal with The Walsh Co. in March.

He was most recently department head at ABC Signature/Disney Television Studios, where he helped get multiple projects, both comedy and drama, into production across Hulu, Disney+ and Onyx, including Phony starring Connie Britton at Hulu, Holes at Disney+, and How to Die Alone at Onyx.

Before his time at ABC Signature/Disney Television Studios, Feldheim was an SVP at Paramount+ and its predecessor CBS All Access, where he helped launch the original series division. Select shows he oversaw include The Offer; Star Trek spinoffs Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds; The Good Fight; and Stephen King’s The Stand.

In a rare feat for a streamer as beloved for its onslaught of acquisitions as its original productions, the best new shows on Netflix’s May release calendar are all exclusive to the service. While I balk at calling Conan O’Brien’s Mark Twain Prize ceremony a full-on Netflix original, the most powerful streaming service in the world was smart enough to snag the rights — and schedule the premiere during yet another period of peak appreciation for our favorite late-night Irishman — so they deserve ample credit.
