In the Season 2 finale of “Elsbeth,” the title character (Carrie Preston) wound up in jail, where she not only had to jazz up her prison uniform and solve the murder of one of her fellow prisoners, but possibly miss seeing Kaya (Carra Patterson) before she left for her new task force assignment.

Happily, Elsbeth smokes out the murderer and is freed in time to wish Kaya farewell and good luck in Washington, D.C.

Ahead of the finale, TheWrap spoke to Preston and showrunner Jonathan Tolins about saying goodbye — for now — to one of the show’s original characters and how they pulled off that dazzling cell block dance homage to “Chicago” with guest stars Retta, Gina Gershon, Elizabeth Lail, Mary-Louise Parker and Alyssa Milano.

Season 2 of the CBS hit comedy, Elsbeth, has come to a close tonight, and it was a musical celebration both for audiences and for Kaya Blanke (Carra Patterson), who performed for her final time on the show as a series regular. As Deadline revealed exclusively last week, Patterson has pivoted to guest-star in Season 3 of the police dramedy.

In conversation with showrunner Jonathan Tolins and star Carrie Preston, who plays the titular former attorney consulting for the NYPD, at the CBS Fest celebration last night, the pair discussed what Season 3 with Kaya could look like.

Elsbeth has been a great hit for CBS in 2024-25, as viewers have come to love this unique mystery series. The setup has Carrie Preston reprising her Emmy-winning role from The Good Wife as eccentric attorney Elsbeth Tascioni. Coming to New York as part of a “consent decree” with the police, Elsbeth soon uses her quirky mind to help solve murders.

The show stands out for two elements besides Preston. The first is that it’s a “howdunnit” where most episodes open by showing the audience who the killer is. While some episodes can make it more of a mystery, the majority play on Elsbeth matching wits with the killer.

The second is that the show boasts a fantastic bevy of guest stars as the killers, each providing some fun entertainment.

Just one year ago, French Stewart was riding high. The actor, best known for playing the squinty-eyed, lovably clueless alien Harry Solomon for six seasons on “3rd Rock From the Sun” was at the SXSW Film Festival, earning raves for his turn as an emotionally abusive father in the Tracie Laymon’s debut feature “Bob Trevino Likes It.” The film showed Stewart, usually cast as likable characters, in a whole new light. Honestly, this episode of Elsbeth should have been called “The Mama Bear Mittens Are Coming Off.” There was no holding back on this culturally infused installment from everyone’s favorite Chicago attorney.

For one thing, how adorable was Henry, the tour guide? I don’t know who that actor is, but he is popping up more and more in different shows and movies.

However, the award for the most over-the-top acting on Elsbeth goes to Alyssa Milano. Was her character a little too much? Check the fingernails. But what the actor did with the role was epic.

It will be a long time before viewers forget the name Pupetta. Although, that’s probably because the character’s name sounds like a side dish that comes with eggplant parm.

It's time for Elsbeth Tascioni (Carrie Preston) to enter the Big Apple's world of organized crime. Elsbeth Season 2 picks up this Thursday with a new episode, titled "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant," which sees the titular defense attorney/investigator touring some of New York's famous crime scenes when one particular mafia slaying at a family eatery piques her interest. At the scene, she meets a fiery former mafia princess played by Charmed's Phoebe Halliwell herself, Alyssa Milano, with suspicions surrounding her that leave Elsbeth wanting to ask more questions.
