Henry Johnson Review: David Mamet’s prison drama boasts a masterful performance from Shia Labeouf
Image
Plot: Henry Johnson follows the title character as he navigates his search for a moral center after an act of compassion upends his life. Looking to authority figures he encounters along the way — including his eventual cellmate, Gene — Henry’s journey leads him down a road of manipulation and ethical uncertainty. The film is an exploration of power, justice, and the consequences of letting others choose your path for you.

Review: David Mamet is a name that has become synonymous with masterful writing. A playwright and filmmaker for over fifty years, Mamet’s works have become required reading in performing arts programs nationwide. Having written films including Glengarry Glen Ross, Ronin, and Hannibal, Mamet’s directorial projects have been no less influential. While my favorite is 1997’s The Spanish Prisoner starring Steve Martin, Mamet has helmed many movies based on his plays and original scriptwork. It has been twelve years...

Disney’s Upfront Went Hard on Sports — With an Off-Key Manning Brothers Musical — but Hardly Mentioned ABC
Image
Peyton and Eli Manning really want to develop their acting careers, if Disney’s upfront show is to be believed.

The Mouse House highlighted its sports programming more than anything else during its annual presentation to ad buyers Tuesday in New York City, parading the Mannings and several other star athletes in front of ad buyers and even connecting scripted Disney content back to what happens on the court and field.

The presentation opened with a marching band performance that lasted for more than five minutes, made up of musicians from Jackson State and Delaware State plus a gameday-ready Mickey Mouse as drum major. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley were next to take the stage at New York’s Javits Center, with Mahomes praising the “boldly original, fiercely competitive, undoubtedly magical” storytelling that makes Disney “the ultimate M.V.P.” before introducing Iger.

‘Every actor likes to play a villain’: Ron Howard on playing himself in ‘The Studio’
Image
Ron Howard has a pretty busy day job: As the co-chair of Imagine, he’s constantly juggling a packed slate of projects, from features to documentaries to his own films.

Turns out he also has quite a side hustle as a cameo performer.

“People are always asking me if I want to act, and my pat answer is, 'The only way I'd make time for it in my schedule is if [my daughter] Bryce [Dallas Howard] asked me to act in something she was directing,'” he tells Gold Derby, adding with a laugh: “I think my wife, Cheryl, would start leaning on me to figure out the schedule to make that happen.”

So he has been flattered when approached over the years, though he won’t name names, especially since those parts ultimately went to others.

But then there are the roles that only he can play: himself.

“I’ve done a fair amount of it,...

Disney Upfront: Here’s What Happened At North Javits With Bob Iger, Patrick Mahomes, Saquon Barkley, Glen Powell & ‘Alien: Earth’ Invasion
Image
Twelve months ago, Disney, fighting for space at the TV Upfronts against both Netflix and Amazon for the first time, flexed its muscles with over 150 stars including Emma Stone and Ryan Reynolds.

The Mouse House also had CEO Bob Iger, appearing for the first time in 30 years, highlighting the “radical changes that have transformed the business over the last three decades”.

Iger evidently enjoyed himself last year as he was back on stage with an introduction from Super Bowl winners Patrick Mahomes and Saquon Barkley. “I’ve not seen you since you won the Super Bowl,” he said to the Eagles running back.

Iger kept things brief, pointing out that it had been a “whirlwind few days for our company” with the launch of a theme park in Abu Dhabi – its seventh theme park around the world, as well as news about the new ESPN streaming service.

“I’m happy...

Comedy Stars From ‘Animal Control,’ ‘Going Dutch,’ ‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’ and More Bring the Laughs to Variety’s FYC TV Fest
Image
Meet the Makers: Going Dutch and Animal Control

There are plenty of similarities to be found between Fox’s two live-action comedies, Joel McHale’s “Animal Control” and Denis Leary’s “Going Dutch.” Both are single-camera workplace comedies with characters in uniform: A quirky group of animal control workers in Seattle on “Animal Control,” and a quirky group of U.S. Army soldiers stationed on a tiny Netherlands base on “Going Dutch.” Making things even more personal, McHale’s “Community” co-star Danny Pudi now stars opposite Leary on “Going Dutch.”

So how about a crossover inside the Fox comedyverse? “It makes perfect sense,” Leary said during the Variety FYC TV Fest. “The guys who are the creators of ‘Animal Control’ are guys I’ve worked with before. Great writers. And we actually discussed it at some point last year. So let’s talk Fox into it. But Fox hasn’t mentioned it.

‘Only Murders in the Building,’ ‘Paradise,’ ‘Doctor Odyssey’ casting director on ‘stressful scheduling’ and the audition that ‘blew everyone away’
Image
There's a high chance you've watched more shows cast by Tiffany Little Canfield in the past year than anyone else. The six-time Emmy nominee is the casting director on Only Murders in the Building, Paradise, and Doctor Odyssey, among others.

Little Canfield has been with Only Murders since the beginning, which means she's been there for every season finale murder that sets up the following season's mystery. "Usually, like way before we really, really start with the concept of it, that is a conversation that we start brainstorming ideas," she tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Casting Directors panel. "I'll get a call like, 'Ok, we're doing like this. I think it was literally like, 'We need to do the famous actor, like who's gonna play our three in the movie version?' And so that is where it sort of started. And there was lots of fun...

Kelly Clarkson’s New Song Was Inspired by Martin Short for Some Reason
Image
Not many popular songs have been written about cast members of Three Amigos — with the possible exception of Paul Simon’s “You Can Call Me Al,” which, judging from the music video, was all about hanging out with Chevy Chase in a windowless, purgatorial room.

But pop star and talk show host Kelly Clarkson just dropped a new track that was reportedly inspired by comedy legend Martin Short. Which is no small feat considering how few words there are in the English language that rhyme with “Jiminy.”

At first listen, the song, “Where Have You Been,” may not seem like it has any connection to Short whatsoever. It’s a pretty straightforward romantic ballad, containing sentimental lyrics like “Where have you been? What took so long?” and “Nothing could keep my eyes from driftin’ over to you,” but there are zero references to Clifford, and absolutely no Steve Martin put-downs.

4 must-watch movies and series coming to Netflix
Image
It's May, which means with the upcoming warmer months (north of the equator), we get more beachy films. Or, at least, a warmer and fluffier feel as far as the films we see on Netflix. The comedy will be fun, and the drama less emotionally upsetting. Well, maybe.

To be sure, we might get more Beach Bingo-type things than Ironweed. Both are fine films, though one is better suited for winter, while the other is more suitable for summer. We like both, but we need them at specific times of the year.

‘SNL’ Stars Say 50th Anniversary Was Like “Building Up To A Wedding” – Contenders TV: Documentary, Unscripted & Variety
Image
Saturday Night Live celebrated its 50th anniversary in February with a star-studded concert and an A-list primetime special, a “huge moment” for the NBC late-night show.

Ego Nwodim, who joined the cast in 2018 for Season 44, said during Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary, Unscripted & Variety event that the three-hour special February 16 felt like “building up to a wedding.”

“All throughout the season, I feel like we anticipated what the 50th was going to be. We didn’t know. I called it an SNL wedding, [even though] birthday is obviously more fitting. It felt like we were having a wedding, and it was like we’re building up to this wedding,” she said. “We had these episodes leading up to the actual 50th celebration, but all the while just knowing, ‘Okay, we’re working toward this thing, and that is going to be such a huge moment.’ You could just feel it in the air.

The definitive Godzilla viewing experience in 9 movies (and 1 show)
Image
Thanks to the recent successes of Legendary's Monsterverse movies and Toho's Japan-produced movies, Godzilla seems to have more momentum than ever. It seems like there's a new major movie in the franchise every couple of years, and all of them are stomping their way to huge takes at the box office. It's been 70 years since everyone's favorite radioactive dinosaur's first appearance and he's showing no signs of slowing down. If anything, Godzilla is consistently reaching a bigger audience all around the world than ever.

So far, there have been four main eras of the Godzilla movies — in Japan, at least; the American movies tend to be considered separate, and the Monsterverse movies constitute a distinct sub-franchise with their own canon. With one exception, the Japanese periods of the franchise are named for the reigning Japanese Emperor's era name, though there is some overlap between the different periods of the franchise and the different Emperors' reigns.

Netflix is dropping 55 movies and series this week
Image
Oof. Beginnings of months are difficult in terms of how many titles on any streaming service we are forced to say goodbye to. Each month, Netflix brings in many new items, meaning some older ones have to leave. Some months are worse than others.

May isn't worse than other months unless you are a fan of a couple of franchises. If you love Spider-Man, we have bad news for you. If you are addicted to watching Thomas & Friends, we have more bad news.

Perhaps the worst part is that a lot of comedies are saying goodbye. Wedding Crashers, the Fockers films, and a couple of the Friday flicks are going away. So are some Oscar-worthy films, such as Schindler's List and Whiplash.

A large number of titles are leaving Netflix this week (April 26 through May 2)

The weird 1978 version of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is also leaving.

Kevin Hart and Will Smith's 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles' Remake Stalls
Image
When Hollywood's original ideas fall flat, sometimes it's time to reignite the classics that worked. Take the critically acclaimed French film The Intouchables (2011), which was ultimately remade for America with The Upside (2017), which became a commercial success worldwide. The U.S. version starred Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart, the latter of whom was also once part of another exciting remake opportunity. Who can forget John Hughes' timeless holiday comedy, Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987), starring Steve Martin and John Candy? And what if the pair were replaced by Will Smith and Kevin Hart for a modern-day reimagining?

Film and TV writer Aeysha Carr (Woke) actually wrote said script with those celebrated actors in mind. MovieWeb recently caught up with Carr while she was promoting the new series she co-created, Government Cheese, and the talented scribe took time to provide an update regarding her John Hughes remake.

"That fell apart. There's so many reasons.

‘SNL’ Closes Out Season 50 With Hosts Walton Goggins and Scarlett Johansson
Image
“Saturday Night Live” is closing out its historic 50th season with one of the buzziest names in television and a longtime favorite. Walton Goggins and Scarlett Johansson have been tapped to host the final pair of episodes for this season of the NBC comedy, which will return in May.

Goggins, who has swept the spring TV season for his roles in “The White Lotus” and “The Righteous Gemstones,” will host for the first time on May 10. He will be joined by longtime “SNL” favorite Arcade Fire, marking the Grammy-winning band’s sixth performance. This appearance comes timed to their new album “Pink Elephant,” which will be released on May 9.

Season 50’s finale will then be hosted by Johansson on May 17, marking her seventh time hosting. The only other person who has hosted seven times is Christopher Walken — though Buck Henry, Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, Tom Hanks, John Goodman and Alec Baldwin...

People Keep Screwing Up This Detail About Steve Martin’s Life
Image
Steve Martin is known for being an actor, a comedian, a writer, a fancy art lover, a professional Martin Short defamer and a guy who once wrote a novel about a woman who shaves her public hair with toilet water for some unfathomable reason. But is he a member of the international smarty-pants club known as Mensa?

A recent New York Times crossword clue made reference to the “elite group whose members include Steve Martin and Geena Davis.” Since “Illuminati Reptilian Overlords” didn’t fit, the answer was seemingly “Mensa,” the famed organization full of high I.Q. individuals, including at least one four-year-old and a bunch of giant creeps.

The only problem is: Martin isn’t a member of Mensa. We know this because Martin himself took to Instagram to correct the puzzle. “Hey Nyt crossword,” Martin wrote, “Fyi, I’m not a member of Mensa and never have been.

Francis Ford Coppola is about to trade in his Razzie Award for an AFI Life Achievement Award.

The five-time Oscar winner has been named the 50th recipient of the American Film Institute's most prestigious honor. It couldn't come at a better time. Coppola's directing buddies George Lucas and Steven Spielberg will present the trophy on April 26. The televised special, titled The 50th AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Francis Ford Coppola, will air on TNT with an encore on TCM at a later date.

The swanky tribute will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, with other A-list guests and presenters including Gia Coppola, Roman Coppola, Robert De Niro, Adam Driver, Harrison Ford, Morgan Freeman, Dustin Hoffman, Ron Howard, C. Thomas Howell, Diane Lane, Spike Lee,...

Add another star to the Only Murders in the Building suspect list. Booksmart star Beanie Feldstein is joining the Hulu comedy mystery series for its upcoming fifth season. Deadline reports that Feldstein will recur on the series, but her role is being kept under wraps for now.

Feldstein is the latest big name to join the star-studded series, which stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as a mismatched trio of podcasters and amateur sleuths who find themselves solving a series of murders in their ritzy Manhattan apartment complex. Feldstein broke out as a control-freak high-school senior trying to cut loose in the 2019 comedy Booksmart; her performance netted her a Golden Globe nomination. She has subsequently starred in The Humans and Drive-Away Dolls, recurred on What We Do in the Shadows, voiced the title character in Apple TV+'s Harriet the Spy, and starred as Monica Lewinsky in the...

Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter’s Broadway Reunion Gets Opening Date
Image
Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter's next excellent adventure together has officially set its opening date, though it won't be in the world of Bill & Ted. Their previously announced Broadway rendition of Samuel Beckett's play Waiting for Godot is now set to begin previews at the Hudson Theatre, Broadway's oldest venue, on September 13. The curtain will officially rise on this strictly limited engagement starring the longtime friends on September 28, with dates running through January 4, 2026. Announcements for the full casting and design teams are expected soon.

Directed and produced by the acclaimed Jamie Lloyd, the show is a bit more of a serious affair for the dynamic duo than the most righteous time-travelling, rock-and-roll adventures they've typically embarked on together. Godot is a theatrical touchstone around the world, premiering back in 1953 in French and subsequently being translated into many languages with its leads, Vladimir and Estragon, being played by many talented actors,...

Total Recall (1990) – Wtf Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
We’ve recently looked at the of Michael Crichton’s best works and it got me thinking about some of the other heavy hitting sci-fi writers. One of the best who also happens to have quite a few adaptations to his name is Philip K. Dick. If you aren’t a big reader, then the titles We Can Remember It For You Wholesale and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sleep may not ring a bell, but I’m sure that Total Recall and Blade Runner are right up this audience’s alley. You guys seemed to really enjoy the breakdowns on Jurassic Park, Congo, and Sphere so lets take a look at one of the biggest action movies of 1990 and its source material and unpack Total Recall. No, not the remake. Never the remake for that one. Pull that tracker out of your nostril as we find out what happened to this adaptation.

'Only Murders in the Building' Season 5 is filming — here’s what to expect
Image
Keegan-Michael Key, Renée Zellweger, and more join the cast as filming kicks off in NYC.

I thought Season 4 of “Only Murders in the Building” was its best so far. It was funny (obvs), but also really well paced, with multiple storylines (both inside the building and out) that kept things interesting, and a mystery that kept me hooked right up until the finale. It somehow managed to feel fresh without losing any of the charm that made the show such a hit to begin with. And just like that, our favorite amateur sleuths are back on the case — Season 5 is now filming in New York.

Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez are all returning, along with a new round of big-name guest stars. If this cast is any indication, we’re in for another fun and twisty ride. Here’s everything you need to know about Season 5 of “Only Murders in the Building....

‘King of Kings’ Breaks ‘Prince of Egypt’s Decades-Old Record in Giant Box Office Debut
Image
Despite facing direct competition in the form of The Chosen's fifth season, which is now screening in its entirety in theaters, The King of Kings exceeded expectations in its domestic box office debut. The animated film finished second on the charts, behind A Minecraft Movie; it out-performed fellow new releases such as The Amateur, Warfare, and even The Chosen: Last Supper - Part 3. What's more remarkable is that each of these movies targets middle-American crowds. But thanks to an incredible audience response, The King of Kings was able to emerge victorious.

The movie is estimated to have generated around $19 million in its first three days of release, which happens to be the biggest-ever debut for an animated biblical film. The King of Kings broke the $14 million record set by DreamWorks' The Prince of Egyptback in 1998. That film ended up legging it past the $100 million mark domestically, and the $200 million mark worldwide.

Sacramento Review: Michael Angarano’s road trip with Michael Cera makes for great comedy
Image
Plot: Following the death of his father, energetic and free-spirited Rickey convinces long-time friend Glenn to go on an impromptu road trip from Los Angeles to Sacramento. Frustrated by Rickey’s Peter Pan complex, Glenn is encouraged by his pregnant wife Rosie to go on the adventure to reconnect. In the worn yellow seats of Glenn’s old college convertible, the two men confront their anxiety-ridden lives, addressing past mistakes and questioning what their futures hold.

Review: Sacramento has an equal amount of sweetness and sadness that it tries to balance. Starring two actors who spent their early careers in Hollywood playing teenagers, Sacramento shows us Michael Cera and Michael Angarano as what could be adult versions of any number of characters from their past projects. Co-written and directed by Angarano, Sacramento is a successor to films like Superbad if they were made through the lens of Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain.
