In 1983, Jim McBride attempted an English-language remake of Jean-Luc Godard’s 1959 cinema landmark, Breathless with Richard Gere. It broke one of Godard’s cardinal rules: It was in color. Although not as terrible an idea as Gus Van Sant’s disastrous shot-by-shot 1998 color remake of Hitchcock’s 1960 Psycho — which, like Godard’s forever-influential movie the year before, also broke all the rules of its genre — it is dismissed today with the original still finding new life with young audiences each generation, as France’s New Wave also continues to do.
With the truly wonderful Nouvelle Vague (New Wave), premiering today in Competition at Cannes (where else?), Richard Linklater smartly has not attempted a remake of Breathless but rather a certain regard and respect for the wildly creative cinematic period Godard and his contemporaries achieved with the French New Wave. A cinema revolutionary in spirit and deed himself — just watch his...

Has Cannes gone all political on us? The French film festival, which used to pride itself on, sometimes to a fault, being the apolitical “cinema for cinema’s sake” festival, appears to be storming the barricades.
The 78th Festival featured one of the most political opening ceremonies in living memory. In his speech accepting an honorary Palme d’Or, Robert De Niro lambasted U.S. President Donald Trump, labeling him “America’s Philistine president” and rallying the audience to “act now…without violence, but with great passion and determination” to defend democracy. “It’s time for everyone who cares about liberty to organize, to protest, and when there are elections, vote. Vote. Tonight, and for the next 11 days, we show our strength and commitment by celebrating art in this glorious festival. Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité.”

Arab cinema and its representatives are out in full force — and in the spotlight — on the Croisette this year, where the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival kicked off on Tuesday.
Case in point: Qatar’s film industry is gearing up for what insiders say will be its biggest-ever presence on the Croisette. The timing seems fitting given that the Arab Cinema Center (Acc) will, during the fest, bestow its sixth Arab Cinema Personality of the Year Award onto Fatma Hassan Alremaihi, CEO of Qatar’s Doha Film Institute, for her “noteworthy efforts to advance the Qatari, Arab, and global film industries.”
Egypt also has reason to celebrate. It returns to the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard lineup for the first time in nine years, with its “central role in regional production and distribution” as “the Arab world’s largest filmmaking hub” getting the spotlight in a...

Robert De Niro, in Cannes to receive an honorary Palme d’Or during Tuesday night’s glitzy opening ceremony, used his time in the spotlight to defend democracy and take aim at America’s commander in chief.
“In my country, we are fighting like hell for the democracy we once took for granted. That affects all of us here, because art is the crucible that brings people together, like tonight. Art looks for truth. Art embraces diversity. That’s why art is a threat. That’s why we are a threat to autocrats and fascists,” he said to applause inside the Grand Lumiére theater with Leonardo DiCaprio standing over his shoulder after an affecting tribute to DiCaprio’s frequent collaborator and acting icon.
“America’s Philistine president has had himself appointed head of one of our premier cultural institutions [the Kennedy Center]. He has cut funding and support to the arts, humanities and education.

When Cannes Film Festival Jury President Juliette Binoche was asked today why she didn’t sign a global film industry open letter condemning the “silence” over the deadly impact of Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza; The English Patient Oscar winner told a reporter “I cannot answer you.”
“You will maybe understand it a little later,” the actress said.
Binoche at this afternoon’s Cannes jury press conference was asked by Al Jazeera English about the open letter that was released on the eve of the festival with signatures from more than 350 cinema world figures including Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon and Javier Bardem.
“In Cannes, the horror Gaza must not be silenced,” read the letter.
Binoche was questioned on why she did not sign the letter herself, despite being “well-known for speaking out about a variety of causes.” After a long hesitation, she refused to answer but insisted that...

Halle Berry, Jeremy Strong, and Cannes jury president Juliette Binoche were immediately pressed on all things Trump at the festival’s first press conference on Tuesday.
They were joined by Alba Rohrwacher, auteur directors Hong Sangsoo, Payal Kapadia, and Carlos Reygadas, French Moroccan writer Leïla Slimani, and Congolese documentarist Dieudo Hamadi.
Of course, the conversation swiftly moved to the looming shadow of President Donald Trump whose spate of tariffs has upended the global economy. He has, in recent days, turned his attention to Hollywood: a 100 percent movie tariff on international films putting the fear of god into every producer flocking to the Croisette.
“I’m not sure I’m capable to answer that because it requires an analysis of the industry and cinema in the world,” Binoche said when asked how the proposed tariffs threaten the international film industry. “I understand President Trump is trying to protect… he was trying to protect his country,...

A best-selling smash before being adapted into a trilogy of similarly successful movies, author E.L James' "Fifty Shades of Grey" is a strong reminder that sex sells. The novels and their cinematic adaptations explored a central romance that dealt heavily in eroticism and uninhibited sexual passion. The story occasionally broached on darker themes, bordering on the thriller genre, but maintained its key narrative focus on the sensuality between its lead characters. Fortunately, for those looking for similar steamy stories or dark explorations into sexuality, there are a number of acclaimed movies to follow up the "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy.
Whether it's the ultimate in cinematic bad romances or neo-noir thrillers that have a decidedly erotic tinge, plenty of movies provide unflinching on-screen sensuality. To be clear, this isn't just a collection of movies that would make your parents blush but rather well-crafted films that happen to be linked by frank sexual themes.

Nicholas Sparks writes the kind of books you're likely to find on your mom's nightstand. His romances have captivated (mostly women) readers around the world for nearly 30 years, with over 130 million copies sold according to his website. Many of his novels follow the same formula, but clearly, he's found a winning one: stories of star-crossed lovers, often set in picturesque coastal American small towns, where a profound and enduring bond is tested by a tragic twist. Few authors can claim that all of their books have reached #1 on the New York Times Best Sellers list.
Nicholas Sparks' stories didn't make the leap to the silver screen until 1999 with the adaptation of his second novel, "Message in a Bottle." Star Kevin Costner fits perfectly into Sparks' universe, portraying the all-American, rugged man — stoic and guarded, yet warm. We've seen Kevin Costner play similar roles in some of his best movies, including...

Hollywood kingpin Barry Diller has, for the first time, shared his thoughts on the decades of speculation about his sexuality and his marriage to fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg in an excerpt of his upcoming memoir that appeared in New York Magazine on Tuesday.
The former Paramount and Fox boss said that while there have been a “good many men in my life, there has only ever been one woman” — von Furstenberg, whom he met shortly after getting the top job at Paramount in the mid-1970s. The pair were together for years in the ’70s, before breaking up and later marrying in 2001.
Diller, in the endearing and revealing excerpt, said he had been “realistic” that “everyone knows” in the entertainment world that he is attracted to men, but that he “never wanted to make any declarations.” But long-running rumors that his relationship with von Furstenberg is merely an arrangement or friendship are untrue,...

For better or worse, Edward Norton is known to fully commit himself to his acting choices. He earned an Academy Award nomination earlier this year, for his supporting performance in the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown. The movie re-established him as the star he'd always been touted as, right from his first-ever big-screen appearance in the courtroom drama Primal Fear, which, incidentally, earned him an Oscar nod as well. Directed by Gregory Hoblit, the movie was headlined by Richard Gere, and released to positive reviews in 1996. It has since developed a reputation as a '90s classic, and is now becoming quite a hit on streaming following its debut on Netflix.
According to FlixPatrol, Primal Fear has accumulated a total of 354 points in May, and is the 16th-biggest film on Netflix for the month so far. The movie is doing particularly well in Canada, several European countries, and the Middle East.

Since releasing his first feature in 2000, writer/director Sean Baker has built himself a name as an exciting voice in independent cinema. As his works have gotten more attention, from Tangerine being shot on multiple iPhones, to Willem Dafoe’s Oscar nomination for The Florida Project, Baker has grown in stature as a director. This leads us to Anora, the writer/director’s eighth feature which won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes festival, and manages to be another exemplary piece of cinema from the creative.
British viewers may find themselves surprised in this film’s opening moments, as a remix of Take That’s ‘Greatest Day’ plays while a line of exotic dancers perform for paying customers.

Richard Gere has revealed his one requirement to reprise his role as Edward Lewis in a potential sequel to Pretty Woman. The iconic 1990 romantic comedy was directed by the late Gary Marshall and told the story of Edward, a high-powered businessman (Gere), and Vivian Ward, a spirited sex worker (Julia Roberts). What begins as a business transaction turns into a modern fairy tale of love featuring class differences and personal transformations. Pretty Woman was a massive box office hit, grossing over $460 million worldwide, and cemented both Roberts and Gere as romantic leads in Hollywood.
The film has remained an audience favorite for decades, but despite sequel speculation, neither lead had been open about the possibility of revisiting the film. Now, while speaking with Peopleat the City Harvest Gala in New York, Gere stated that he would be open to stepping back into Edward's shoes, but only under one condition. Read...

In 1990, Richard Gere appeared in Pretty Woman alongside Julia Roberts. The rom-com recently celebrated 35 years since its release, and it's still one of the most beloved films in the genre.
In Pretty Woman, Richard Gere plays businessman Edward Lewis, who hires Roberts' sex worker Vivian Ward to keep him company for a week, but they end up falling in love and getting their happy ending. Although the rom-com premiered over three decades ago, the rom-com still stands and made a huge impact on the two stars' careers. In a new interview with People, Gere revealed what would take for him to reprise his role in a possible Pretty Woman sequel.
Asked about the idea of a sequel, Gere revealed he has one requirement: "It all comes down to whether or not there's a good script." His answer makes sense, but the probability of a sequel is low. Pretty Woman came from the late Garry Marshall,...

At the end of The Agency Season 1, the ground shifts on several characters as their secrets catch up with them. After a whirlwind romance with Martian (Michael Fassbender), Samia (Jodie Turner-Smith) is arrested. She is suspected to have been imprisoned in a secret prison, which becomes a major driving factor for Martian's shocking decision to become a double agent. The Agency is based on a French drama series Le Bureau des Légendes, and Samia meets the ultimate fate, something Turner-Smith hopes her character avoids in the succeeding season of The Agency. The actress told The Hollywood Reporter that she had talked to the show's creative team, hoping to sway them into writing a different fate for the character. "Because I’ve seen the show, the French version, I keep on trying to stalk the Butterworths to be like, ‘So can we make certain changes so that I can get some...

Almost exactly a decade since espionage thriller “The Bureau” became the first series in France to adopt the American writer’s room format, French-American producer Alex Berger is still reaping the laurels of its success.
At Canneseries to promote the festival’s opening night screening of “The Agency,” the George Clooney-produced adaptation of his French hit, the veteran reflected on his career and impact in the industry, recalling how the European country “wasn’t used to doing the type of shows we were aiming for in the rhythm we wanted to do them in.”
By “we,” Berger refers to himself and multi-hyphenate creative and “The Bureau” showrunner Éric Rochant. The duo founded independent production company The Originals Productions in 2008 and perfected their practice following the success of their hit show, coining a technique titled Structured Writing Workshop. The custom-tailored method mixes “the best of what France and the U.

Held under clear skies, Canneseries kickstarted Thursday with much panache via the out-of-competition French premiere of Paramount+’s ‘”The Agency,” a remake of the French hit thriller “The Bureau.”
For its eighth edition, the festival was slightly overshadowed, however, when jury president Norman Reedus of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” fame had to cancel at the last minute for other work commitments. He was replaced by jury member Jeff Russo, Emmy-awarded composer of “Fargo,” also credited for “Ripley” and “Star Trek: Section 31.” Co-jurors of the main competition remained “Pachinko” showrunner Soo Hugh, actors Louise Bourgoin, Lola Dueñas and César Domboy, who walked the pink carpet on Thursday evening.

As The Agency heads into filming season two, Jeffrey Wright and Jodie Turner-Smith have some specific thoughts about where they would like to see their characters’ storylines go.
Wright portrays Henry Ogletree, CIA London Deputy Station Chief and mentor to Michael Fassbender’s Martian, in Showtime’s espionage thriller from Jez and John-Henry Butterworth. An American remake of the French series Le Bureau des Légendes that originally aired in 2015, The Agency has been set closer to modern day so it can address current world issues like the war in Ukraine and crisis in Sudan. Because the timeframe is set a few years earlier, however, the Butterworth brothers previously told The Hollywood Reporter that the series wouldn’t address the real-time unfolding of the second Trump administration and its global impact. Yet there is one issue stemming from Donald Trump’s current presidency that Wright would like to see an exception made.

Kevin Spacey has not taken on a single role since 2017 due to his s*xual assault allegations, but this was not the case back in the day. The New Jersey-born actor was killing it in the 90s with action-packed roles like John Doe in David Fincher’s movie Se7en (1995), Kevin “Verbal” Kint in The Usual Suspects (1995) a movie by Bryan Singer, and Lester Burnham in American Beauty a film by Sam Mendes, to name just a few.
The actor has an amazing filmography and has bagged two Oscars as well. He is someone whose name in the cast would fill up theaters. However, even a great actor like Spacey can mess up in selecting his next role and miss out on movies that go on to become hits. This often happens in Hollywood—actors rejecting scripts or, at times, being rejected by casting crews or directors.

Costalegre, a 200-mile ribbon of Pacific coastline stretching between Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo, is one of the last truly wild corners of Mexico. There are no mega-resorts here. No spring-break beach clubs or 20-story condos. Just sandpipers skimming the surf, green sea turtles digging moonlit nests — and, every so often, Richard Gere strolling on the beach.
This is Xala, a 3,000-acre development so “low-density,” it’s practically invisible. Co-founded by Mexican entrepreneur Ricardo Santa Cruz and supported by Gere and a group of ecologically minded billionaires, Xala is reimagining luxury from the earth up. Instead of golf courses and gated estates, think turtle sanctuaries and organic mango groves.
Santa Cruz could have built thousands of hotel rooms on the property — he has environmental approval for 4,500 of them — but instead, he’s vowed to build just 93. The sole resort planned for the property, a Six Senses opening in 2027, will comprise 51 stand-alone pool villas and 42 branded residences.

Stars: Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson, Sophie Wilde, Antonio Banderas, Esther McGregor, Vaughn Reilly, Victor Slezak | Written and Directed by Halina Reijn
Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson star in this erotic office drama from writer-director Halina Reijn’s follow-up to last year’s horror favourite Bodies Bodies Bodies. Provocative and crackling with tension, Babygirl explores ideas of desire, control and illicit sexuality from a decidedly Gen Z perspective, while playing interesting games with established erotic thriller conventions.
Kidman plays Romy Mathis, the powerful CEO of a New York robotics company, who seemingly has it all, including two teenage daughters (Esther McGregor and Vaughan Reilly) and an apparently happy marriage to successful theatre director Jacob (Antonio Banderas). However, there are early hints that something is missing, because – in the opening scene – after faking an orgasm with Jacob, Romy sneaks off to a different room and masturbates to dodgy daddy porn on her laptop.

Only four people have been named People’s Magazine’s Sexiest Man of the Year on two separate occasions. Richard Gere, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, and George Clooney. You would probably find all four of those men in most women’s top-10 hottest actors list, without a question. But if there’s one guy who defined the term Silver Fox in Hollywood, it’s Gorgeous George. And this goes without any disrespect to Mr. Gere.
But what happens when your Silver Fox isn’t all that… silver anymore? Well, that is the current situation a lot of fans are dealing with, since Clooney is donning an entirely different ‘do. The Ocean’s ringleader has ditched his signature salt-and-pepper look for a darker, more clean-cut image. Now, he has his reasons. But will those reasons fly with the legions who swooned for the silver?

Production momentum is building for The AgencySeason 2, with a fresh update that should ignite excitement among fans of the espionage thriller. Showtime and Paramount+ announced in December 2024 that the series was renewed for a second season following rave reviews and an overwhelmingly positive reception. The decision was on the backs of the series' record-breaking debut, which garnered over 5.1 million cross-platform viewers, making it the most-streamed new series in Showtime's history.
Executive Producer Joe Wright, known for his work on films likeAtonementand Hanna, has expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming season. Films have a unique way of showing us how stories are built, broken, and reimagined, and nowhere is that more evident than in a well-executed plot twist. It reshapes the entire experience and forces audiences to question everything they have just seen.
A great twist flips the narrative on its head. It isn’t, however, just about pulling the rug out for shock value. None of it matters if the scene you’re building toward for the entirety of your film falls flat. We’re looking at you, the much dreaded, “It was all a dream.” Succintly put, a good twist builds on three very specific things – anticipation, revelation, and satisfaction – and it only hits hardest when it ties into your characters and themes.
In this instance, we’re taking ranking ten movies that make us sit up stunned with the realization that we’ve been played, perhaps in the best way possible.

When Michael Fassbender was first offered the lead role in The Agency, Paramount+ With Showtime’s cerebral spy thriller (an adaptation of the critically acclaimed French series Les Bureau des Legendes), he had a couple questions. Mainly, he needed help getting inside the head of his character, Martian, a CIA operative who has just returned from six years undercover. “I was like, who would want this job?” Fassbender said at a recent THR Frontrunners panel. “The question for me was, is this guy a sociopath or not?”
The production put Fassbender in touch with one of the show’s CIA consultants, and together they realized that the character — who is also the father of a teenaged daughter — checked a lot of the boxes. “I was like, Ok, this is who I’m dealing with now,” says Fassbender. “That’s not to say that he isn’t in some ways trying...

In 1973, when Henry Winkler auditioned for the role of Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli on "Happy Days," he was three years removed from having graduated from the prestigious Yale School of Drama, and making a living as an actor by appearing in commercials. This allowed him the freedom to take less lucrative theater and movie gigs, which is often the only way to get anywhere as an actor and the reason why the washout rate is so high.
Just prior to reading for the role that would completely change his life (and make television history in the process), Winkler landed a part in the coming-of-age comedy "The Lords of Flatbush." Set in Brooklyn, the film depicts the antics of four young Brooklyn greasers who cause mostly innocuous trouble around the borough. The movie was modestly successful, giving a small boost to its cast -- which, along with Winkler, included such up-and-comers as Perry King,...

There’s something about Edward Norton that sets him apart. He doesn’t just play a character—he disappears into it. Every performance feels raw, lived-in, and totally believable, like he’s not acting at all. Whether he’s a troubled narrator, a reformed neo-Nazi, or a genius with a secret, Norton brings layers and intensity that few actors can match. He’s built a career on complexity, always choosing roles that leave a mark. Honestly, he’s not just part of modern cinema—he’s helped shape it.
Blowing up in the late 90s with a string of Oscar-worthy performances, Norton quickly became the guy directors had to work with. He’s teamed up with visionaries like David Fincher, Tony Kaye, and Wes Anderson, shared the screen with legends like Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins, and delivered some of the most iconic performances that created a shift in the world of filmmaking.

If The AgencySeason 1 was a fraught, anxiety-inducing experience, brace yourself for an even tenser Season 2. Michael Fassbender stars in and executive produces the Showtime spy thriller show, and he recently appeared on a Deadline panel where he discussed the much-anticipated second season. The show improves on its first season as the spy world becomes even more secretive and the stakes are upped. "It just doesn’t let up in Season 2. The walls just keep coming in, and the vice grip keeps getting tightened," the actor said. "That tension and that jeopardy just heightens all the way through without any let up in the second season," he added, teasing a never-wracking second season. The show was already renewed for a new season that is currently in production.

The four stars of The Agency — Michael Fassbender, Richard Gere, Jeffrey Wright and Jodie Turner-Smith — were hesitant to spoil anything, just like their characters keep secrets and maintain their covers. As an executive producer, Fassbender had the authority to tease the upcoming second season.
“It just doesn’t let up in Season 2,” he said. “The walls just keep coming in, and the vice grip keeps getting tightened. That tension and that jeopardy just heightens all the way through without any let up in the second season.”
In the Paramount+ with Showtime series based on Le Bureau des Legendes, Fassbender plays Martian, a spy called back from his undercover assignment. That means the end of his marriage to Sami Zahir (Turner-Smith), who shows back up in his life. Gere plays Bosko, the superior to the agency characters, and Wright plays Henry Ogletree.
