Julia Butters, known for her work in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Fabelmans, is in talks to join the Freaky Friday sequel at Disney, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The studio first confirmed plans for the long-hoped-for film last year, and in March announced Nisha Ganatra of Welcome to Chippendales had been tapped to direct.
Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, who starred in the original, were also in talks to return, though the studio has not officially confirmed any of its cast, including Curtis and Lohan. Disney had no comment on Butters’ casting.
Andrew Gunn, who produced the 2003 movie, will produce alongside former Disney exec Kristin Burr.
Curtis and Lohan have spoken openly of their aspirations for a Freaky Friday sequel for years. “We would only make something that people would absolutely adore,” Lohan told the New York Times in 2023.

Julia Butters is in talks to join the Freaky Friday sequel at Disney. While no other cast has been confirmed, sources say Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are in talks to reprise their roles from the original pic. Late Night director Nisha Ganatra is on board to direct.
Disney and reps for Butters could not be reached for comment.
No word yet on the plot of the new film. Jordan Weiss wrote the script, with the original’s Andrew Gunn to produce alongside Kristin Burr. Whether the film will be for theaters or streaming isn’t yet clear.
Released in 2003, Freaky Friday revolves around Tess Coleman (Curtis), a single mother and uptight psychiatrist, and her rebellious teenage daughter, Anna (Lohan). Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have perhaps one of the longest friendships of any pair of actors in Hollywood. But Affleck felt his decades-long camaraderie with Damon also served them well when it came to selling movies.

Damon and Affleck have been friends ever since their childhood years. During an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Affleck reflected on when he and Damon first met.
“I met him when I was eight, he was 10, so he was a little older, he was a lot bigger than me,” Affleck said. “He was always quite a bit bigger than me because, you know, two years is a big deal when you’re eight and 10. We lived down the street from each other and we’d see each other at the park and stuff.

Were you hoping to see more Alaska crime-solving from True Detective’s Danvers and Navarro next season? Sorry, but you’re left out in the cold.
The upcoming fifth season of HBO’s crime drama anthology will feature “different characters,” a “different setting” and a “different story” than Season 4’s Night Country, showrunner Issa López confirms to our sister site Variety. That fits with True Detective’s pattern of refreshing its cast and setting each season, but some fans were hoping to see more of Danvers and Navarro, since López served as showrunner last season as well.

HBO’s “True Detective” took over television in 2014 with Woody Harrelson and Mathew Matthew McConaughey as two gritty detectives struggling to solve a seemingly impossible string of supernatural murders. Ten years and three seasons later, Jodie Foster and Kali Reis have taken over for “True Detective: Night Country,” ushering in the most-viewed season of the series to date.
As part of the Variety Indigenous Storytelling in Entertainment Breakfast, Variety‘s deputy awards and features editor Jenelle Riley sat down with Reis, co-star Isabella Star Lablanc and creator Issa López to talk about how they brought the latest season of “True Detective” to life.
“True Detective: Night Country” follows detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) as they investigate an incident at an Alaskan research station and the disappearances of young women from a local Indigenous community. Three of López’s six projects as a writer-director deal with the disappearance of women,...

Peter Bogdanovich's "Paper Moon" is a rip-roaring road movie with a lot of hijinks and heart, anchored by the incredible performances from real-life father and daughter Ryan and Tatum O'Neal. They play Moses Pray, a two-bit con artist who hoodwinks widows into purchasing Bibles, and Addie Loggins, a precocious nine-year-old with a permanent scowl who claims to be his daughter. With their streetwise charm, they unite to drive across the dusty Midwest, gradually increasing the stakes of their swindles. The sharp, black-and-white cinematography by László Kovács perfectly captures the sparse, unsentimental Depression-era America. But there's also a sweetness to "Paper Moon," especially in the development of Moses and Addie's complex and tenuous father-daughter bond. The film has a certain magic that can only come from the O'Neals' actual relationship, and it's something that makes "Paper Moon" such a joy to watch. Here are the main cast members still with us.

HBO’s “True Detective” franchise had been off the air for five years, since its third season concluded in 2019. But all of that changed this year under the stewardship of Mexican filmmaker Issa López (“Tigers Are Not Afraid”), when the series came roaring back into the zeitgeist — with “True Detective: Night Country,” led by stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.
The murder mystery revolved around a central question: How did the scientists at the Tsalal research station in Ennis, Alaska end up as a frozen pile of dead naked men on the ice? A corpsicle, if you will! The answer — as uncovered by the true detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) — took the women through a maze of questions, some of which seemed to have no logical explanation: but in the end, very much did. Through their investigative work, they healed themselves — and Ennis too.

When the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative released a report surveying film roles for Native Americans last October, of the 100 highest-grossing theatrical movies released between 2007 and 2022, only one had an Indigenous performer in a lead role. Yet when speaking to Native creatives and performers, there is an overwhelming sense of optimism for what’s to come for their representation in entertainment. “I feel very hopeful about where we are,” Jana Schmieding, who recently starred on “Reservation Dogs,” tells Variety. “I want to think that studios see the value in our storytelling.”
Variety’s inaugural Indigenous Storytelling in Entertainment Breakfast, which will take place June 5 in Los Angeles, will focus on both the value and future of such stories. Robert Downey Jr. is "surprisingly open-minded" to a return as Iron Man.The 59-year-old actor played the superhero for more than a decade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and would consider a comeback as the character because the role is in his "DNA".In conversation with Jodie Foster for Variety's Actors on Actors series, Robert said about putting on Iron Man's suit again: "It's just crazily in my DNA. Probably the most like-me character I've ever played, even though he's way cooler than I am. Robert Downey Jr Weighs In On Potential Return Of Iron Man. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
It’s been nearly five years since Robert Downey suited up as Iron Man. The gap might seem relatively small in human years, but it’s astronomical in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) years, considering they dole out a superhero movie/series every fortnight.
Robert Downey Jr. has portrayed the iconic character for over a decade and has endeared himself to fans worldwide. So, it was unsurprising that the character’s death in the third act of Avengers: Endgame left fans heartbroken. The devastation was exacerbated by the stark reality that they might never see Robert Downey Jr. play Tony Stark, aka Iron Man.
In the ensuing years since he departed from the MCU universe, whispers about his return have often sent fans into a tizzy. So, the recent news alluding to the possibility of Robert Downey Jr.

At nearly three-and-a-half hours, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon was already a long movie, but Jodie Foster thinks it could have been longer. In fact, she believes it should have been expanded into an eight-hour limited series.
Jodie Foster and Robert Downey Jr. chatted for Variety’s Actors on Actors, and both actors have recently had experiences with limited series, Foster with True Detective: Night Country and Downey Jr. with The Sympathizer.

A pivotal moment comes as the fourth season of “True Detective: Night Country” hits a thrilling end in episode six. Law enforcement officers Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis), find themselves at the entrance to the ice cave. Robert Downey Jr. first played Tony Stark in 2008's Iron Man, a movie which turns 16 this year. He'd go on to reprise the role in several MCU movies, ultimately bidding farewell to the Armoured Avenger in 2019's Avengers: Endgame.
It's been five years since the actor snapped his fingers and bid farewell to the role. Since then, Downey has won an Oscar for his work in Oppenheimer and all eyes are on what he does next.
Surprisingly, it seems an MCU return is somewhere on his list (and these comments come just hours after Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner also expressed an interest in reuniting with his fellow original Avengers).
Talking to Jodie Foster for Variety, Downey was asked if he'd consider suiting up again. "It’s just crazily in my DNA. Probably the most like-me character I’ve ever played, even though he’s way cooler than I am," the actor responded.

Robert Downey Jr.’s career has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. The Oppenheimer star has seen it all – the highs and the lows. From his early rise to fame, that was stunted by a crippling drug addiction and was at once threatened to stunt his career as well. But he bounced back in style. Since then, there has been no turning back for him. And he’s played numerous interesting roles. But on the top of his list would be a series which saw him take on the mantle of playing 4 roles.

Jodie Foster wanted more “Killers of the Flower Moon” — or at least, to see more “perspectives” showcased in the film’s retelling of the Osage Nation massacres.
The actress said during an interview with Variety that Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-nominated epic could have benefitted from being even longer, or perhaps reimagined as a limited series. Scorsese’s film already received criticisms for being too long at almost four hours; theaters began issuing an intermission during screenings, much to the dismay of editor Thelma Schoonmaker.

On a Sunday afternoon in late April, seven of this year’s Emmy frontrunners convened at The Georgian Hotel in Santa Monica. There were four Oscars and another 18 Emmy nominations between them, but the web of shared experience went far beyond hardware.
Earlier in their collective careers, at least a few of them starred opposite each other onscreen (Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Aniston among them); one actress (in this case, Naomi Watts) played the mother of another (Brie Larson); and still another actress (Jodie Foster) had graciously stepped in when a second (Kidman) had to bow out of a role. Griselda‘s Sofia Vergara and Aniston share an acting coach, Anna Sawai and Larson share a history in music, and Watts and Kidman share a friendship that dates back 40 years.
It all contributed to an hour of easy, intimate conversation, which covered everything from mentorship to menopause. Their time together...

Jodie Foster and Robert Downey Jr. have a long history. Their careers have intersected over time, starting when Foster directed Downey in her 1995 Thanksgiving comedy “Home for the Holidays,” where he played the sweet-natured but rebellious black sheep of the family. More recently, both were nominated in supporting categories at this year’s Oscars — Foster was nominated for her role as an encouraging swim coach in “Nyad,” and Downey won for playing a villainous government official in “Oppenheimer” — and played key roles in HBO limited series. Foster was a hard-bitten cop in “True Detective: Night Country,” writer-director Issa López’s reimagining of the crime franchise that centered on Alaska Native communities. Downey tackled four roles — a CIA agent, a university professor, a congressman and an indie filmmaker, each representing a facet of the American power structure — in Korean director Park Chan-wook’s adaptation of the post-Vietnam War novel “The Sympathizer.

Back in 2014, Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar rekindled people’s great interest in science fiction movies. The story of an astronaut on his way to a wormhole to find a new home for humanity attracted the attention of millions of viewers around the world.
Few of them know there was a 90s movie that literally paved the way for all modern sci-fi films. Since then it has gained a cultish status, but, nevertheless, it still seems underrated, especially given the fact that fans compare it to Nolan’s masterpiece.
The plot revolves around Dr. Ellie Arroway, a Seti employee who dedicated her life to the search for extraterrestrial life. After eventually finding the evidence of it, she faces skepticism from other scientists, politicians and media, but it’s high time to go further.

The Griselda star, who recently had extensive knee surgery, said on Thursday night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! that the cover shoot with Nicole Kidman, Jodie Foster, Jennifer Aniston, Anna Sawai, Brie Larson and Naomi Watts was less than two weeks after her operation.
So her team wanted her to cancel, with them telling her, “We don’t think you’re in good shape, you’re not looking good.'” At the time, she was relying on a walker to move around, as she couldn’t walk.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, as the eligibility period closes Friday, we discuss two last-minute limited/TV movie hopefuls.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re at the end of 2024 Emmys eligibility, and not without some last-minute entries. This week, Netflix added “Eric” to its stable of limited series contenders — joining fellow May release “A Man in Full,” as well as “Ripley,” “Griselda,” “Painkiller” and presumed frontrunner “Baby Reindeer.” Meanwhile, over at HBO, “The Great Lillian Hall” is here, a TV movie that puts Jessica Lange in contention for Best Limited/TV Movie Actress. It’s funny: Neither of these projects feels like they connected with critics and the late drops are always dicey when there are too many shows to watch in the first place.

Brie Larson may not be the most popular actress in a superhero suit around, but her advice to every actor who takes on such a role is noteworthy. Larson shared that she would reach out to these actors via email to give them insights into the training for the role and particularly costume advice. Handling a spandex is not an easy job as a superhero actor and Larson knows it enough to share her two cents on the matter.

Brie Larson knows the highs and lows of working in the superhero world. She made her own superhero debut in the 2019 film Captain Marvel, which earned over $1 billion at the global box office and became one of the top 25 highest grossing films of all time. She played the character again in Avengers: Endgame, which was released just weeks after Captain Marvel and earned almost $3 billion at the box office, briefly becoming the #1 highest grossing film of all time. We saw Larson’s Captain Marvel again in the 2021 hit Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, an episode of the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel, and last year’s The Marvels… which did not replicate Captain Marvel‘s success, making just over $200 million at the box office and becoming the lowest-grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are a lot of varying opinions about Larson’s performance and attitude, but...

The line-up for the new series of Variety’s Actors On Actors has been revealed, with high profile movie performers interviewing each other.
Variety’s Actors On Actors is one of the most delightful series you can watch as a film fan. The central conceit is that two actors sit down for a natter about their work, often going off on tangents, acting as a unique insight into the industry.
Generally, the pairings are quite surprising, with the actors concerned often never having worked together and, in some cases, seeming quite random, but each one is fascinating and, usually, an absolute hoot. You can see Kate Winslet shooting the breeze with Gary Oldman, for example, or Beanie Feldstein with Florence Pugh – we are still waiting for Jason Statham to make an appearence.

Jodie Foster may have been nominated at the Academy Awards for portraying a real-life rape survivor in “The Accused” (for which she ultimately won) as well as as a child prostitute in “Taxi Driver,” but now the actress is calling out the overwhelming trend throughout Hollywood history of male screenwriters relying on assault storylines to craft female characters.
Foster told The Hollywood Reporter that she was “always shocked” by how many scripts included a rape backstory for women.
“For most of my career, I was always shocked that so many of the scripts that I read, the entire motivation for the female character was that she’d been traumatized by rape. That seemed to be the only motivation that male screenwriters could come up with for why women did things,” Foster said. “‘She’s kind of in a bad mood, yeah, there’s definitely some rape in her past.'...

Martin Scorsese’s war with Marvel seems to be over as filmmaker George Lucas recently revealed that the director might have eased his opinions about the MCU. The Departed filmmaker came under fire back in 2019 when he compared Marvel with theme park rides and said that they were not cinema, sparking controversy and a bunch of memes.
While the filmmaker was commenting on the lack of originality in Hollywood and how the only films getting made were superhero films, many fans took issue with him insulting their beloved franchise. However, the director seemed to have calmed down about the issue, according to George Lucas.

In a major shockeroo announcement, Gold Derby can reveal that FX is shifting the popular “Shōgun” away from the limited series races for the 2024 Emmys and will compete in all the drama categories instead.
