From ‘Say Anything’ to ‘Palm Springs,’ Hulu nail every era of the rom-com.
Rom-coms are my favorite genre because when they really work, they deliver one of the best story experiences. Put simply, they both make me laugh and move me emotionally. Now, I’m not talking about the made-for-tv kind with generic meet-cutes and soft lighting, but the real deal: big-screen, laugh-out-loud, emotionally layered stories that actually stick with you.
So I started digging across the streamers, looking for the good ones. And while it’s obviously subjective, the best collection I found was on Hulu. Not the most rom-coms, but the right ones for me — a killer mix of 2000s nostalgia, indie hits, and buzzy modern entries that all hit that sweet spot. Here’s why Hulu is the best streamer for rom-com lovers who want quality, not quantity.
Everything you need to know about the best streamer for rom-com movies.

Pete Rose, one of baseball’s greatest baseball players who was banned from the sport for life in 1989, will finally be eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame after a ruling handed down Tuesday by the commissioner of Major League Baseball.
Rob Manfred ruled that MLB’s policy shall be that “permanent ineligibility ends upon the passing of the disciplined individual.” Rose, baseball’s all-time hits leader and a 17-time All-Star, died in September at age 83.
The ruling was spurred by an application by Rose’s lawyer and family, and came about as Rose was the first player banned after the tenure of baseball’s first commissioner, Kenesaw Mountain Landis — who originated the rule of no gambling in baseball in 1921 — to die while still on the list.

There's no need to keep anyone in suspense: that titular brilliant comedy — you know it, I know it — is Stephen Frears' beloved 2000 classic "High Fidelity." Based on the great Nick Hornby's bestselling novel from 1995, the movie adaptation led by John Cusack was (and still is) an absolute banger that completely swept critics and viewers away when it was released at the dawn of the aughts. So it's hardly a surprise that the film spoke volumes to "The Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson, too, who went on to say in a 2004 statement (via Variety), "I've been wanting to work with Jack Black ever since I saw him in 'High Fidelity.'" Adding, "I have no doubt Jack will make (Carl Denham) a truly memorable character," as a reason why he cast the comedian-actor-musician in his famous 2005 blockbuster, "King Kong," alongside Naomi Watts.

Sebastian Stan is back as Bucky Barnes, aka the ruthless, one-armed Winter Soldier in the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film, “Thunderbolts*,” but the highly trained super soldier is only one of his many great roles.
The award-winning actor is well known for his turn as an action hero, but he is also adept at comedy, dark psychological drama and embodying a number of real-life people on the big and small screen .
Here are our favorite roles of his so far:
Sebastian Stan in “Hot Tub Time Machine” (Credit: MGM/UA) Blaine in “Hot Tub Time Machine”
Not one of his “best” films, per se, but Sebastian Stan is one of the funniest things in this comedy as stereotypical ’80s bully Blaine, who flips out when he thinks time travelers John Cusack, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke and Rob Corddry are actually Russian spies. “They could be some kind of ’21 Jump Street’ spy battalion-type dudes,...

Two! Dollars! While the most regarded of John Cusack‘s films with audiences usually gravitates towards Say Anything, 1985’s Better Off Dead has been steadily growing its cult status and seems to be referenced and quoted more often. Despite both movies having Cusack as a lovelorn teenager, Better Off Dead‘s broader, Naked Gun-style of humor certainly has it stand out amongst the many teen comedies of the era.
Blu-ray.com has now reported on the new 40th anniversary edition 4K Blu-ray of Better Off Dead that’s set to release in early August from Paramount Home Media Distribution. While there haven’t been announcements regarding special features, the specs can be seen below. The description reads, “After his girlfriend ditches him for a boorish ski jock, Lane decides that suicide is the answer. Before he was the Winter Soldier, Sebastian Stan was a snow bunny trying to make ends meet.
The Oscar nominee recalled how royalties from his appearance in 2010’s Hot Tub Time Machine helped him survive before he landed his role as the MCU‘s James ‘Bucky’ Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).
“I was actually struggling with work,” he told Vanity Fair. “I had just gotten off the phone with my business manager, who told me I was saved by $65,000 that came in residuals from Hot Tub Time Machine.”
In director Steve Pink’s sci-fi romp Hot Tub Time Machine, Stan played the typical ’80s bully Blaine, who terrorizes a group of friends who travel back in time to their teen years at a 1986 ski resort.

There are many actors who come from humble beginnings (though less so these days) and remember a time when it was a struggle to pay the bills. And Thunderbolts* star Sebastian Stan is no exception. The Academy Award-nominated actor is sitting comfortably now thanks to numerous projects that have established him as one of the best actors of his generation, but before he arrived in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Stan was barely getting by. However, it was residuals from a largely forgotten 2010 comedy that helped him keep the lights on before he was cast in Captain America: The First Avenger.

Sebastian Stan is one of the most in-demand and most-respected actors in Hollywood. It certainly wasn’t always that way — not before Marvel came calling.
Stan told Vanity Fair he was “struggling with work” before being cast as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier for 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger.
“I had just gotten off the phone with my business manager, who told me I was saved by $65,000 that came in residuals from Hot Tub Time Machine,” Stan recalled.
Thank goodness for the role of Blaine the ski-patrol bully. (Stan had also done 11 episodes of Gossip Girl by then.)
Hot Tub Time Machine starred John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke as a group of guys who accidentally time-travel back to 1986 using a hot tub and must find a way to return to 2010. The supporting cast included Crispin Glover, Lizzy Caplan and Chevy Chase; Glover of Back to the Future fame,...

I feel a distinct sense of sadness whenever a high-profile filmmaker falls from grace. I recognize how challenging making one movie is, let alone dozens, and I earnestly believe even one hit under your belt is a worthy accomplishment. It’s challenging to keep up forever, though I still often wonder what went wrong. How does one move from A-list hits to B-movie nonsense in the span of just a few short years?
Take filmmaker Bruce Beresford. Beresford is a two-time Academy Award nominee among plenty of other honors. He was a staple in the 1970s and 1980s, helming such classics as Driving Miss Daisy and Crimes of the Heart. In the 1990s, Beresford shifted into less-acclaimed psychological thriller territory. Remember Silent Fall and Double Jeopardy? Yup, those are Beresford. The trend continued into the 2000s, at which point Beresford failed to attract much interest, including in this Hulu chart-topper...

“Film records the profound suffering that war brings to mankind.” That is how the Beijing International Film Festival explained a focus it has unveiled on war and peace in a special “Film and Peace” program that it is featuring during its 15th edition starting on Friday.
It will showcase “12 masterpieces” depicting “the tragedy of war” on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II this year to “immerse ourselves in history,” organizers said. “Filmmakers at home and abroad use light and shadow to remember the cruelty and endless pain of war and use memory, emotion and shocking reality to preserve recollection and sound the alarm for today.”
Among the movies screening at the Chinese fest will be the winner of the first-ever Cannes Film Festival in 1946, The Last Chance, a 1945 movie directed by Austrian-Swiss filmmaker Leopold Lindtberg. Also featured are such classics as Claude Lanzmann’s Shoah,...

Four decades after John Hughes’ The Breakfast Club helped define a generation of teen cinema, the film’s five lead actors appeared together publicly for the first time since its 1985 release. Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy, and Judd Nelson joined a panel at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) on Saturday, timed near the film’s 40th anniversary.
As the cast took the stage, the crowd greeted them with cheers and applause. The “Colonel Bogey March,” whistled by the characters during their detention day in the film, played over the loudspeakers. The panel covered a wide range of topics, including working with John Hughes, behind-the-scenes memories, and the film’s standing in a different media landscape.
“This is the first time that Emilio has joined us. We don’t have to use the cardboard cutout anymore because he’s here,” said Ringwald. “I feel really...

When one thinks of Bryan Cranston, it is his Breaking Bad role that first comes to mind and not his role as the hilarious Hal from Malcolm in the Middle. But audiences have the boon of hindsight now that they have seen the actor kill it as Walter White in the AMC drama. But back then, it was a tough sell.
The network reportedly wanted a star for the role of Walter White, but creator Vince Gilligan was Cranston’s biggest supporter. The duo had worked together in an episode of The X-Files, when Gilligan was a writer on the show. While Cranston fulfilled two of the showrunner’s criteria for Walt, there was one thing he had to nail to be the man for the job.

The Breakfast Club stars Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Anthony Michael Hall united publicly for the first time since the film’s 1985 release on Saturday, taking part in a 40th anniversary conversation at the C2E2 convention in Chicago.

When I first watched Geostorm (2017), I wasn’t expecting to care this much about satellites. But here we are—hooked on a movie where futuristic tech tries to control Earth’s weather, and of course, things go horribly wrong. It’s got action, a race-against-time plot, and that classic global disaster vibe. Directed by Dean Devlin and starring Gerard Butler, this film dives into the chaos that happens when science loses control. If you loved the tension, destruction, and the “we have to save the world” feel, here are some other movies like Geostorm that you might want to dive into next.
The Wandering Earth
This one totally reminded me of Geostorm because it’s all about Earth being in danger and humans scrambling to fix it. The stakes are insanely high—here, we’re not just dealing with storms, we’re literally moving the entire planet to avoid a dying sun.

The only thing more stressful than having the jitters before a special occasion is having an outside party intensify that wave of anxiety tenfold under the threat of death. In Christoper Landon's superb new thriller "Drop," which /Film's Ryan Scott lauded as a lean, crowd-pleasing ride in his review, Meghann Fahy plays a single mother who finds herself on the first date from hell when she starts receiving a series of threatening airdrop messages. Should she not follow the mysterious figure's specific instructions to kill her date, then her son will die, as will anyone she attempts to warn in the process.
Landon makes the leap from horror-comedy to high tension thriller with ease here, creating a gripping sense of paranoia as our main character grapples with the terrible predicament she's found herself in. You'll see a lot of folks comparing "Drop" to Wes Craven's "Red Eye," and they're not wrong.

Willa Fitzgerald has been exploding in film and television fan favor in recent years thanks to a buzzy performance in a twisted thriller and the ever-growing popularity of everyone's favorite series about a beefy man taking down baddies. However, some folks inaccurately believe that Fitzgerald is a star on the rise when in reality, she's been consistently working since the late 2000s. She's established herself as a formidable acting presence with a proven track record of versatility, portraying complex characters across a miscellany of genres on screens big and small. Fitzgerald truly shines with her ability to draw audiences in and see the characters as very real people, regardless of the world in which the project is set. Even under the most heightened circumstances, she'll make you root for her as the final girl in a slasher series or strike fear into your heart as a sadistic killer. As she's...

For anyone who grew up watching movies in the 1980s, Val Kilmer, who died Tuesday, was something of an anomaly among the young Hollywood actors whose careers blew up during that decade.
Compared to Tom Cruise, Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, Emilio Estevez, Robert Downey Jr., John Cusack or Tom Hanks, to name a handful of stars who emerged back then, Kilmer was not exactly a strapping action hero nor a smooth heartbreak kid. Nor did he come across as a brooding Method-style thespian, or as someone who could provide instant comic relief onscreen.
In some ways, Kilmer was all of these things at once, and therefore unclassifiable. He was mostly a great character actor with the looks of a leading man, capable of melting into roles that almost invariably had an edge to them.

Val Kilmer, the actor famous for taking on Tom Cruise in Top Gun, the Riddler in Batman Forever and Johnny Ringo in Tombstone, passed away on Tuesday at age 65. But before Kilmer cemented his reputation as a powerful dramatic actor, he kicked off his career with some of the funniest performances of the 1980s.
Kilmer made his film debut in Top Secret!, the Zucker brothers’ criminally underrated follow-up to Airplane!. After the success of their disaster movie spoof, the Zuckers and Jim Abraham mashed together a parody of spy movies and Elvis musicals. Unlike Airplane!, which featured a cast of fading movie stars, Zaz went with complete unknown Kilmer for the lead role of singer Nick Rivers.

“It is indefensible for an organization to recognize a film with an award in the first week of March, and then fail to defend its filmmakers just a few weeks later,” the open letter updated Friday and signed by AMPAS members across a range of genres, including documentaries, stated.
The AMPAS voters were reacting to a statement put out Wednesday by Academy leaders Bill Kramer and Janet Yang that suggested the beating and arrest of recent Oscar-winner Hamdan Ballal is something Academy members will have “many unique viewpoints” on.
Other well-known Academy members who signed the letter include Mark Ruffalo, Oscar-winning Zone of Interest director Jonathan Glazer,...

Seth Rogen's new comedy series might feel fresh, but it's not exactly original. The Studio, which is streaming on Apple TV+, follows a fictional studio executive as he meets with real-life actors in a show with the main purpose of satirizing Hollywood. The Studio is not the first show or movie to do this, as The Player had a near-identical premise but with a plot that makes it much more like a thriller than a comedy. The Studio even makes at least one reference to the film.
The Player was based on a hit book and received critical acclaim when it came out, with 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film might have gone under a few people's radars as it was distributed by a small studio that was absorbed by Warner Bros. However, it's now streaming on Max, and it's worth checking out.

The recent passing of the iconic and legendary actor Gene Hackman has led to innumerable accounts of his work ethic and the impact he made throughout decades of film work. Naturally, one of the other discussions has centered around how he inspired his fellow actors and actresses through those distinctive performances. The nature of his lengthy filmography is such that Hackman wound up working with many younger actors who are now titans of their generations. He had a fiery chemistry with Denzel Washington in the 1995 thriller "Crimson Tide," he worked with a young Willem Dafoe in the 1988 historical drama "Mississippi Burning," and in one of his last roles, he had to face off against John Cusack in "Runaway Jury." One actor with whom Hackman didn't exactly work next to, but who was still impacted by him, was Alec Baldwin.
It should be noted at the top that Hackman and Baldwin...

The upcoming thriller Fog of War brings World War II to American soil with a taut tale of espionage and suspicion. The movie takes place in Massachusetts in 1944, where evidence of the Allies’ developing plans for their D-Day invasion are taken by a German spy. The movie was directed by Michael Day, and written by Luke Langsdale.
ScreenRant is happy to present the trailer for Fog of War. In it, the thriller’s incredibly high stakes are quickly established as it’s clear that if the Nazi spy escapes, the balance of the world’s largest war could easily tip in the Nazis' favor. The trailer also promises a twisting, turning narrative that will have audiences unsure of whom to trust. Take a look at the trailer, which features the film’s stars Jake Abel and Brianna Hildebrand as well as John Cusack and Mira Sorvino, below.

Detective Chinatown 1900 reinterprets familiar characters within a setting steeped in early 20th-century San Francisco. The film places its protagonists in a bustling Chinatown during a period marked by significant racial and immigration challenges.
The production employs detailed period sets and authentic costume design to evoke the atmosphere of the time, highlighting how communities dealt with social prejudices and systemic exclusion.
The narrative follows an investigation into a double homicide that unfolds against the backdrop of charged political debates and shifting cultural identities. The investigation reveals tensions between established American institutions and the lived realities of Chinese immigrants, prompting viewers to reconsider long-held perceptions of heritage and modernity.
Moments in the film capture the essence of international detective storytelling while drawing from Chinese cinematic traditions. This interplay is visible in the careful staging of investigative sequences, where visual storytelling techniques echo classic mystery narratives and accentuate the impact of racial discord.

It's widely regarded as one of the best sports movies ever made, but there was a time when "Hoosiers" made Gene Hackman fear that he wouldn't work again. The film sees him play Norman Dale, a troubled coach tasked with guiding the Hickory Huskers basketball team to glory. Sounds like a fun rags-to-success story, right? Not for Hackman, who felt his career was on a downward turn in the 1980s and that "Hoosiers" would be its death knell. He was wrong about that, and did pretty well for himself afterwards. What's more, "Hoosiers" is a slam dunk that's still finding new fans in 2025.
According to data obtained by FlixPatrol, "Hoosiers" currently occupies the fifth spot in Prime Video's top 10 chart in the United States, which is a remarkable achievement for a movie that Hackman expected to flop back in the day. It isn't the only Hackman movie to top streaming charts since his passing either,...

One of the last movies of the late Gene Hackman has entered the Netflix Top 10 Global Movies chart 22 years after its initial release. Hackman was one of the most revered and successful actors in movie history, and enjoyed a strong filmography, which included a diverse mix of both blockbusters and character-driven dramas. He shot to prominence with early roles in movies like Bonnie and Clyde and I Never Sang For My Father before achieving global recognition and leading man status with the role of Popeye Doyle in William Friedkin's crime thriller The French Connection.
Hackman won an Oscar for his performance and reprised his role in the follow-up The French Connection II. He then went on to star in a number of successful and critically acclaimed box office hits, including Superman, Superman II, Mississippi Burning, and Unforgiven, for which he won his second Oscar. Does Johnny Depp always do everything he can for his friends? (Photo Credit – Prime Video)
Yep! Johnny Depp reportedly spent $3 million firing Hunter S. Thompson’s ashes from a cannon. Because that’s exactly what the gonzo journalist wanted.
“All I’m doing is trying to make sure his last wish comes true,” Depp once said (via The Guardian). “I just want to send my pal out the way he wants to go out.”
Thompson, the legendary writer behind Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, had made it clear before his death in 2005: he wanted his ashes blasted into the sky in a grand, fiery send-off. Depp, who played Thompson in the 1998 film adaptation of the same name, made sure it happened.

The recent death of Gene Hackman has prompted many cinephiles to revisit their favorite films featuring the two-time Academy Award-winning actor -- though, really, regardless of what's going on in the world, any movie lover worth their weight in celluloid is never far removed from watching a Hackman flick because the man made so many classic, rewatchable pictures. The most valuable thing we can do as film buffs right now is to turn younger cinephiles on to the man's multitude of brilliant performers, because some of these kids were born after his 2004 retirement from acting.
For those just becoming acquainted with Hackman, it's important to understand that there's no ideal way to watch his movies. You can throw a dart at Hackman's filmography, and even if you hit a lousy movie like "Loose Cannons" or "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace," you're at least going to get Hackman being an...

Prolific filmmaker Brian Skiba, who went from directing the slick action/thriller Pursuit, starring John Cusack, to the upcoming twisted Nicolas Cage western, Gunslingers, is ready to call it: Hollywood is in the midst of a Western resurgence. In a recent interview with MovieWeb to discuss the other western he recently directed, Guns of Redemption, Skiba said:
“Absolutely… there's a resurgence going on. You know, obviously all of Taylor Sheridan's stuff [Yellowstone, 1923, 1883, Landman] is really resurging. American Primeval on Netflix surged. I think people enjoyed Kevin Costner's film [Horizon]. Unfortunately, the format wasn't working. He should have probably just told the whole story all at once instead of trying to spread it out over three movies. But it was still a beautiful film and a lot of people responded to it.”

Ahead of her starring role in Steven Soderbergh’s thriller Black Bag, and as her London stage run in The Seagull continues, we look at the screen queen’s most commanding roles
Cate Blanchett played a pretty generic “wife” role in this interesting, somewhat forgotten US comedy about air traffic controllers from director Mike Newell, whose title is their slang for guiding planes. It was saddled with a terrible ending by its screenwriters, Glen and Les Charles (creators of TV’s Cheers), and blitzed at the box office by The Matrix. Its genesis is amusingly described by its producer, Art Linson, in his memoir What Just Happened? Blanchett plays the wife of hotshot young air traffic controller John Cusack, who has an affair with Angelina Jolie – who is married to Cusack’s workplace rival, Billy Bob Thornton.

Runaway Jury, one of the best legal thrillers based on a John Grisham novel, has entered Netflix's top 10. The film features an incredible cast, which includes John Cusack, Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, and Rachel Weisz, and was directed by Reacher's Gary Fleder. Runaway Jury currently sits at number seven in the United States and in the Netflix top 10 worldwide.
The movie is about a lawyer named Wendell Rohr (Hoffman), who is up against Rankin Fitch (Hackman), a shady jury consultant who is able to stack juries in the favor of the defense. In a high-stakes trial against a gun manufacturer following a workplace shooting in New Orleans, one juror (Cusack) and his girlfriend (Weisz) appear able to manipulate the jury to deliver the verdict they wish.

Just over a week ago, we had to share the sad news that director George Armitage, best known for bringing the world Grosse Pointe Blank and Miami Blues, had passed away at the age of 82. Armitage got his start in the entertainment industry at the start of the 1970s, writing the film Gas-s-s for producer Roger Corman and then going on to write and direct Private Duty Nurses and write Night Call Nurses, also for Corman. By the end of the ’70s, he had written and directed the films Hit Man and Vigilante Force, as well as the TV movie Hot Rods, and wrote the scripts for the film Darktown Strutters and an episode of the TV series Monty Nash. Oddly, he did not earn any writing or directing credits in the 1980s – but, of course, this was not for a lack of trying. In fact, Kevin Tenney, the writer...

Francis Ford Coppola, Clint Eastwood, Nathan Lane, Viola Davis, Josh Brolin, and Superman actress Valerie Perrine are among the stars mourning Gene Hackman.
The 95-year-old legend and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 63, were found dead on Wednesday, alongside their dog, in their Santa Fe, N.M., home. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office initially said foul play is not suspected, and there's an "active and ongoing investigation" into their deaths. In a search warrant affidavit released Thursday, authorities said their deaths are "suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation," and that there were "no obvious signs of a gas leak."

As always, Netflix brings the goods with the arrival of the new month. There aren't any new blockbusters on the schedule today; those are coming later this month. But a lot of great movies and shows hit the screen today.
Yeah, that's not exactly the best sales pitch, I know. But there's no shortage of star power, both in front and behind the camera. Ewan McGregor, Gene Hackman, Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, John Cusack, Rachel Weisz, Benicio del Toro, and Harrison Ford star, while filmmakers like Ridley Scott, Denis Villeneuve, and Taylor Sheridan craft the vision.
There are several modern classics on the bill, including a trio that are regarded as some of the best of their respective genres. Crime drama, science fiction, and war movies all get their due today. There are some originals, to be sure. A pair of anime series make their Netflix debut, as well as a Korean rom-com romance series.

There are several modern classics on the bill, including a trio that are regarded as some of the best of their respective genres. Crime drama, science fiction, and war movies all get their due today. There are some originals, to be sure. A pair of anime series make their Netflix debut, as well as a Korean rom-com romance series.

Beloved director of such iconic films as Grosse Pointe Blank and Miami Blues, George Armitage, has died at 82. A popular director in the '90s and Roger Corman protégé, known for his dark comedies, he also helmed the 1972 Blaxploitation film called Hit Man. The news was confirmed by his son, the writer-producer Brent Armitage.
Born and briefly raised in Hartford, Connecticut, Armitage's family moved to Los Angeles in the 1950s. His first job in the industry was in the mail room at 20th Century Fox, which led to him getting into production on television shows. He worked as an associate producer on the soap opera Peyton Place starting in 1967, and leveraged that experience to get in with the folks at Roger Corman's New World Pictures. Corman was a revolutionary in the industry, creating an entire ecosystem of micro-budget films that gave many Hollywood mega-talents their start.

George Armitage, the director of Grosse Pointe Blank and Miami Blues, as well as a close collaborator of Roger Corman’s, has died. He was 82.
George Armitage entered the business in the ‘70s but it took a while to find his footing. That came with 1990’s Miami Blues, which starred Alec Baldwin as a criminal fresh out of prison posing as a cop with a stolen police badge. Armitage would develop his mixture of crime and comedy later that decade with 1997’s Grosse Pointe Blank with John Cusack and Minnie Driver.
Even though he was a buddy of Corman’s, it does feel like George Armitage is too rarely mentioned in the list of notable directors who got their start working under him. But we can’t ignore where he got his start. George Armitage met Roger Corman at just the right time in the 1960s. In 1971, Corman hired him to write Gas-s-s,...
