After 3 seasons, John Wilson is tired of people questioning the integrity of “How To With John Wilson.” However, when you spend 18 episodes curating the most unbelievable New York oddities and storylines while sending crews out to film “houses that look like faces” or a “bunch of bottles of urine discarded on the sidewalk” (which are actually pretty easy to find in the city), the public can’t help but wonder if the subjects of his docuseries on HBO are really… real.
The master of weaving seemingly unrelated narratives and anecdotal tangents together into an (often emotional) truth about humanity sat down with Variety‘s Making a Scene to discuss why he was ready to address the disbelievers and unveil his process of creating the final season of “How To.”
So, for the penultimate episode of “How To,” instead of busting out the receipts, Wilson decided to lean in and stage...

Mark Andrews, director of Pixar’s Academy Award winning animated feature “Brave” and a writer on Genndy Tartakovsky’s “Primal” and “Samurai Jack,” is attached as the showrunner of animated series “Kyōryū,” about samurai dinosaurs living in a postapocalyptic Japan.
In development at Wellington, New Zealand-based Floating Rock, an animation and VFX studio, “Kyōryū” is set in Japan in a future where dinosaurs have outlasted humanity. Genetically engineered, they are far more intelligent than their pre-historic ancestors. That said, atavistic instincts can flare, making for tribal wars.
Unveiled last September, the “Kyōryū” proof-of-concept trailer went viral, with 1 million views in its first 10 days of release, now 2.1 million views to date on YouTube, and an estimated reach of over a million.
The trailer also attracted Andrews. “‘Dinosaurs in postapocalyptic Japan?’ I want to see that show without even knowing what the story’s about! We’re going to give the audience...

Director Fede Álvarez’s upcoming Alien: Romulus has generated significant buzz, especially with the recent release of a gripping new image featuring Cailee Spaeny. The film is set to blend the atmospheric horror of Ridley Scott’s Alien with the intense action of James Cameron’s Aliens. In a recent interview, Álvarez discussed how the movie transitions from the slow-burn terror that defined Scott’s original to the chaotic Xenomorph battles synonymous with Cameron’s sequel. He asks, To ask an Alien fan to choose between is a perverse question. So I thought, ‘How do I do both?’ This duality even extends...

Jan de Bont's "Twister" might be regarded nowadays as one of the most thrilling blockbusters of the 1990s, but when it hit theaters on May 10, 1996, the first, heavily-hyped summer tentpole out of the gate that year, it felt like a bit of a miss. Responses varied, mostly because you really needed to see the film on a massive screen in a theater outfitted with top-grade sound –- this way, the visual/aural sensation concocted by de Bont and the best of the best at Ilm and Skywalker Sound could blow you up, up and out of the cineplex, thus distracting you from the bland characters and preposterously thin plot. (Helen Hunt's character needs to face and survive an F5 tornado to exorcize her childhood demons.)
Actually, there's a world in which this is an awesomely preposterous plot, but "Twister" offers only mechanical blockbuster storytelling. The film –- from...

Variety hosted its inaugural Indigenous Storytelling in Entertainment Breakfast on June 5 in Los Angeles. The event included insightful conversations with Indigenous and Native creators, talent, and industry executives such as “Reservation Dogs” showrunner Sterlin Harjo, Bird Runningwater from “Fancy Dance,” Kali Reis from “True Detective” (who was joined by co-star Isabella Star Lablanc and showrunner Issa López) and many more. The program highlighted Indigenous storytelling and the achievements of Indigenous communities in film and TV and even included a surprise message from director James Cameron.
The event also explored how the industry is faring in creating opportunities for Indigenous talent on and off-screen. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Indigenous Native Americans becoming U.S. citizens, as President Calvin Coolidge signed the Indian Citizenship Act in 1924, inspired by the high rate of American Indian enlistment during World War I.

When Ryan Condal decamped for the U.K. in 2020 to begin work on a Game of Thrones spinoff, it hadn’t occurred to the screenwriter that he, his wife and their two young children wouldn’t return to Los Angeles anytime soon. “It was about two years later, when the show came out and everybody watched it, that I finally thought, ‘Oh, Ok, we’re going to be here for a while,’ ” he says.
The “everybody” in question was 29 million viewers, per episode, across platforms, a stat that minted House of the Dragon as HBO’s new flagship. It returns for a second season June 16, with at least a third and a fourth all but given. Fortunately for Condal, he brought a little of Hollywood to his home office in Central London. Ryan Gosling is making the dreams of “Saturday Night Live” writers come true.
In addition to reprising his iconic role for a sequel to skit “Papyrus,” penned by Julio Torres, it’s now been revealed that Gosling’s viral “Beavis and Butt-Head” sketch was a shelved idea from 2018, with Jonah Hill originally being set to portray one half of the cartoon-character duo.
“SNL” hair stylist Jodi Mancuso and makeup artist Louie Zakarian both told The Ankler that the skit was originally pitched when Jonah Hill was hosting a Season 44 episode in November 2018. However, it was canceled due to challenges with the necessary prosthetics.
“Even at that time it was late coming into the show, so there wasn’t a lot of prep time and I wasn’t fully happy with the wigs,” Mancuso said. “Then I think we tried it again, and again I wasn’t happy with it. So...

The year was 1989 when Michael Keaton first donned the cape and cowl for Tim Burton’s Batman, Cher wanted to turn back time, and Marty McFly bungled the most sure-fire get-rich-quick scheme in cinematic history in Robert Zemeckis’ Back to the Future Part II.
After the monumental success of Back to the Future, Univeral Studios approached Robert Zemeckis about creating a sequel to his film that had quickly become a pop culture touchstone. Hesitant about capturing lightning in a bottle twice, Zemeckis said he wouldn’t make the film unless Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd returned as Marty McFly and Doc Brown, respectively. Thankfully, both were game to gas up the DeLorean and push the speedometer to 88mph for another excursion through time. With Fox and Lloyd confirmed, Zemeckis arranged his ceremonial objects to summon his writing partner, Bob Gale, to determine where Marty and Doc would travel next.

Yaphet Kotto as Jean-Luc Picard? Wesley Snipes as Geordi? Jenny Agutter as Dr. Crusher?

The easiest way to make two rivals team up? Pit them up against an adversary who they can only defeat by working together. It's a tried and true storytelling formula and 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" is no different; after all, if you make the final battle actually be Godzilla vs. Kong, then there has to be a winner. If Kong triumphs, you alienate the Godzilla fans. If Godzilla wins, the Kong-heads will bow out. If it's a tie, you satisfy no-one. Much easier to make a crowd pleaser where these two monster movie icons team up (there's a reason the sequel "Godzilla x Kong" looked to buddy cop movie "Lethal Weapon" for influence). That way, both sets of fans can cheer as they wail on a common foe.
In "Godzilla vs Kong," that shared enemy is Mechagodzilla. True to its name, the being is a robotic replica of Godzilla created...

It’s the age-old argument: Alien or Aliens? The haunted-house horror movie, or the action-packed war film? The lean, dread-filled original, or the bigger, beefier sequel? Both Ridley Scott’s original Xenomorph outing and James Cameron’s exemplary sequel stand tall among the greatest sci-fi films of all time – each with a strong and valid claim for being the best of the bunch. But when deciding the direction in which to take his sequel, Alien: Romulus, filmmaker Fede Alvarez hit upon the ideal solution: why not a hybrid of the two?

In a pre-recorded video played at Variety‘s inaugural Indigenous Storytelling in Entertainment Breakfast, James Cameron said he tries to celebrate indigenous peoples through his films.
“I try to celebrate Indigenous peoples as guardians of our fragile living world and show their fight against the destruction of land and culture due to everything: extractive industries, deforestation… and I celebrate their fight against the plundering of the ocean and its wildlife,” Cameron said.
Cameron went on to explain the importance of centering Indigenous voices in the entertainment industry.
“But, it’s your stories we want to hear,” he said, “in your voice and in the way you want to tell them. And whatever you learn today, know that you already have so much to teach. So I greet you and I celebrate you speaking as a student and with humility.”

Only the learned can perceive the merit, goes the saying. Among the vast pool of talent in Hollywood, only a few have managed to bring across a resounding impact not only in terms of the box office but also by catapulting into everyday pop culture. The latest entrant to that hallowed fame is the cinematic genius and the 21st-century Dune adaptation’s director, Denis Villeneuve, whose worth has found immense praise from fellow film pioneer, Steven Spielberg.

Sylvester Stallone is credited to have created some of the best action movies of all time. Apart from the Rocky franchise, the actor’s portrayal of the war veteran in the Rambo movies is celebrated for their intense action sequences and emotional depth. Offering a compelling exploration of the effects of wars on individuals, the series is now a cult classic.

You don't need all your fingers to count the Marvel Comics stories more influential than "X-Men: Days of Future Past."
In the dark future of 2013, America has been conquered by the mutant-hunting Sentinel robots. Most of the X-Men are gone, mutants live in concentration camps, and the world stands on its nuclear brink as the other nations prepare to strike against the Sentinels. To prevent this apocalypse, X-Woman Kate Pryde travels back in time.
You see, things went to Hell on Halloween 1980. Mystique and her Brotherhood of Evil Mutants assassinated anti-mutant Senator Robert Kelly, intent on showing humanity they will supplant them as the Cro-Magnon did the Neanderthal. Instead, this event inflamed anti-mutant sentiment and led to the Sentinel takeover. If Kelly isn't assassinated, maybe this awful future will never happen.
"Days of Future Past" was Byrne's penultimate story on his original "X-Men" and he goes with a banger.

Exclusive: As Deadpool & Wolverine tracks huge ahead of its July 26 release and looms as a summer box office savior, we can reveal that director Shawn Levy is the top choice and is having early conversations to direct another Marvel Studios pic — the next Avengers movie.
Deadline hears that Levy has been given the latest script by Michael Waldron, though sources add that he has not given an answer on whether he will take the job, and the studio is still planning to meet with other directors while they wait on a decision from him.
Marvel Studios could not be reached for comment.

In space, nobody can hear you scream ... but even from orbit, you can probably hear the collective buzz unleashed by this heart-stopping new footage for the next "Alien" film. The first official trailer for "Alien: Romulus" has finally dropped, and the reactions are pretty much unanimous: Audiences simply can't wait to watch yet another cast of soon-to-be victims attempt to survive some of the most terrifying, chest-bursting, existential horror they've ever had the cosmic misfortune to experience. Neither Sigourney Weaver's beloved Ellen Ripley nor original director Ridley Scott are part of the action this time around, having passed the mantle down to rising star Cailee Spaeny and "Don't Breathe" filmmaker Fede Álvarez, but the new film sure looks like it's bringing everything else fans have come to expect from the classic sci-fi series. While Scott's divisive prequel efforts "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant" have garnered their fair share of supporters and detractors in recent years,...

As we've previously discussed, this summer movie season is surprisingly light on franchise fare.
That's partially due to the strikes that shut down Hollywood for much of the year, and partially due to the fact that superhero flicks just aren't packing 'em in like they used to.
But if you're a fan of sequels and nostalgia, fear not! Ridley Scott's Alien saga will be returning to theaters in August!
Yes, Alien: Romulus is set for release on August 16.
Scott is still on board as executive producer, but there's a new writer-director at the helm in the form of Evil Dead and Don't Breathe horror-meister Fede Alvarez.
Earlier today, 20th Century Studios dropped a press release, along with a trailer that's giving us some serious heebie-jeebies.

Back in the day I was with my parents and brother in one of our local malls and we were thinking about going to see a movie. This was when James Cameron's Aliens was playing and I kid you not, our mom, for a brief moment was thinking out loud, "Should we go see Aliens?". I was thirteen and my brother was ten at the time. I think she clued in to how bad a choice that would have been for us at the time because my brother and I looked at each other, "Is she for real? Doesn't she know what that movie is about?" Alas, we did not go see it thus saving our family from lofty therapy bills. I tell you...

The first full teaser for Alien: Romulus contains lots of nods to Alien and Aliens. Not only does it integrate the famous tagline for the first film, but we get plenty of cool guns, facehuggers on the attack, and even a xenomorph rising from the water. In other words, all things that made Aliens great.
The connections between Alien and Aliens make sense. Director Fede Álvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues have made clear that Romulus takes place between those two landmark films. However, the standout, most shocking scene pays homage to Alien 3, a movie so divisive that even director David Fincher disowned it.
In the final image of the trailer, a xenomorph approaches protagonist Rain and extends its inner jaw. Soaked with sweat and steam, Rain turns her anguished face away from the monster and toward the camera.

Another trailer for this August’s Alien: Romulus has landed, and it contains a lot more gore and swearing. You have been warned…
A new Alien: Romulus trailer has landed! We’re in a bit of a hurry, so we’ll just plonk the embed here and come back with a few more thoughts later.
We’d argue it gives quite a lot away, though, so bear that in mind if you’ve already decided to buy a cinema ticket. Also there’s quite a lot of swearing, so that’s something else to consider if you happen to be sitting in a busy office or something.
Take it away, director Fede Alvarez…

20th Century Studios has released the first trailer for “Alien: Romulus,” the upcoming science fiction film in the long-running “Alien” franchise. It is set for a theatrical release on Aug. 16.
Directed by Fede Àlvarez, the film takes place between the events of Ridley Scott’s “Alien” and James Cameron’s popular sequel “Aliens.” Cailee Spaeny, who played Priscilla Presley in last year’s “Priscilla,” is set to star in the standalone movie.

Fede Alvarez is no stranger to horror franchises with devoted fanbases. Having directed the “Evil Dead” remake back in 2013. That being said, with “Alien: Romulus,” Alvarez tackles another famed film property that first crept into the psyches of filmgoers back in 1979 with Ridley Scott’s “Alien” and was further made iconic with James Cameron’s “Aliens.” Since the beginning, the movies have provided a degree of shock, disgust, and gore.

Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise’s collaboration on the sci-fi action thriller War of The Worlds was hailed as one of the most exciting actor-director combinations. The film expectedly was a huge success and earned over $600 million worldwide while gaining a lot of acclaim from critics as well.

Spielberg also roped in veteran actor Morgan Freeman as the narrator for the H.G. Wells adaptation and elaborated on his very specific reasons for approaching him for the film. Incidentally, this blockbuster was the beginning of a serious feud between Cruise and the director that ultimately ended after 20 years.

Actress Kate Winslet is synonymous with the character of Rose from James Cameron’s disaster epic Titanic. The film saw her paired up with Leonardo DiCaprio in the doomed romance set aboard the ‘unsinkable’ Titanic in 1912. The film garnered her a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars and the film was the highest-grossing movie of all time then.
Despite earning billions, Titanic remains one of the many in Winslet’s amazing filmography. Though she is best known for her role in Cameron’s film, she has delivered far superior and mature performances since the big blockbuster. Here are three performances from Kate Winslet’s extensive filmography that are far better than Titanic.

In the late 1980s/early 1990s, Avatar, Aliens, and The Terminator director James Cameron had ambitious plans for a live-action Spider-Man movie.
After writing the screenplay with Barry Cohen and Ted Newson, he'd have directed the movie. While we've heard about many possible casting ideas the filmmaker had, Leonardo DiCaprio was expected to play Peter Parker.
It's one of those movies fans will likely always wonder about; instead, Sam Raimi helmed 2002's Spider-Man, with Tobey Maguire playing the web-slinger and a tone more in line with Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's comics instead of the R-Rated adventure Cameron likely had planned.
Electro and Sandman were expected to be Cameron's villains, though a quote attributed to the director at Cinematheque Francaise in Paris confirms he also had plans for Venom.
"And then there's Spider-Man, the greatest movie I never made," he said. "Because my version of the project didn't get off the ground,...

If you have Hulu (or Disney Star in Canada), you might have noticed that Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later is no longer available. Indeed, Disney lost the rights to the independently financed original film, with them now only owning the rights to the Searchlight-financed sequel, 28 Weeks Later. That’s why you can’t find it on streaming sites and why the Blu-ray Disc is out of print. Sony now owns the rights to the film, with it being part of the package they acquired when they bought the rights to finance the upcoming Danny Boyle/ Alex Garland sequel, 28 Years Later. So, presumably, Sony will be reissuing the film in the near future, and there’s a chance that when they do, it’ll look much better than it ever did before. But why?

Updated with new timeline. Paramount Global and Skydance have agreed to terms on a merger, a person familiar with the deal talks has confirmed to Deadline, with Paramount controlling shareholder Shari Redstone taking a final look.
CNBC reported the stepped-up timeline earlier Monday. As Deadline and other media outlets reported over the weekend, a revised offer from Skydance had gained more traction, though it did not initially appear likely that anything would be firmed up before Tuesday’s annual shareholder meeting. That event was already set to be a significant one, with the three executives sharing the Office of the CEO laying out their strategic plans for the company.
Redstone, through National Amusements, controls 77% of the voting shares of Paramount.

As Paramount Global approaches Tuesday’s annual shareholder meeting and a high-stakes town hall for employees the following day, new details are emerging about Skydance Media’s latest acquisition offer.

A simple story, non-stop action directed by James Cameron, and a charismatic villain with memorable lines are all it takes to turn a low-budget movie into an instant classic. The Terminator is a gripping thriller, a survival drama, and a time-travel science fiction movie. Three genres – one great movie.
Judgement Day is perhaps one of the best sequels of all time, which, like any good sequel, does not exploit the merits of the original, but reinterprets them. It was Judgment Day that forever cemented the franchise in the cultural code and made James Cameron the most important blockbuster director of our time.
After the second installment, however, the franchise began to decline. Rise of the Machines, Terminator Salvation and Genisys stagnated in the same place without giving the audience anything new, but 2008 brought Terminator fans a real gift – the Fox series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

The much-awaited science fiction – with a promise of delivering the best of both worlds on the horizon – might just end up outshining Hollywood’s treasured gems. Or at least that’s what Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez seems to attest to.

The debate about whether or not James Cameron’s gritty sequel to the 1979 Ridley Scott classic takes the cake is a tale as old as time. But it looks like the million-dollar question – Alien or Aliens? – may just come to an end with Alien: Romulus looking to outstrip its Academy award-winning ancestors.

Following the success of Steven Spielberg’s 1975 cinematic masterpiece Jaws, which captivated audiences with its tense and frightening portrayal of a great white shark terrorizing a beach town, the movie became an inspiration for upcoming thrillers. But there was one film in particular that shockingly used Jaws as a humorous dig.
Acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg | image: Gage Skidmore/Wikimedia Commons
Well, in 1978, after Universal Studios released the sequel to Jaws, director Joe Dante came up with Piranha, which was a playful parody version of Steven Spielberg’s suspenseful thriller. Taking a humorous approach, exaggerating the dangers of a school of deadly piranhas, the movie deliberately departed from Jaws’ serious and suspenseful tone.
However, Joe Dante’s campy spoof movie seemingly annoyed Universal Studios, which almost led to a lawsuit, until Steven Spielberg intervened to save the day.

Director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, is set to reach theatres on August 16th (you can watch the teaser Here), and during a recent interview he said that the film starts off reminiscent of Ridley Scott’s Alien, then gradually becomes more like James Cameron’s Aliens. Now, in an interview with Empire, Álvarez continued talking about the ways Alien: Romulus blends Alien and Aliens, while Empire unveiled a new image from the film, which can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Lately, it seems as if there are new headlines every day about the dangers posed by artificial intelligence — everything from the technology ruthlessly taking our jobs to it perilously increasing our carbon footprint to fuel the necessary computing power. The headlines are concerning, and some even predict doomsday-like scenarios in the near future. Just like many of humankind’s inventions, AI will surely prove to be both beneficial and harmful depending on its application, but it won’t be the substantial power it will consume or the jobs it will take that pose the biggest risks. It’s the threat to our creativity and thereby our humanity itself.
Our innate creativity is what sets us apart from all other living beings. It helps us relate to our world and to each other. From the earliest forms of communication, which can be traced back 64,000 years ago through cave paintings made by Neanderthals found in Spain,...

Almost thirty years after it completely blew the whole world away upon its release, James Cameron’s epic disaster movie Titanic now seems to be nothing but a perfection, where every detail couldn’t be showcased better. Still, back in the day the film underwent a whole list of changes that eventually helped it become the worldwide raving success that hasn’t really quietened down to this day.

Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos isn’t getting too worried about the rise of artificial intelligence in Hollywood. During a recent interview with The New York Times, Sarandos said he doubts AI platforms will ever replace Hollywood professions such as screenwriters.
“I have more faith in humans than that. I really do. I don’t believe that an AI program is going to write a better screenplay than a great writer, or is going to replace a great performance, or that we won’t be able to tell the difference,” Sarandos said. “AI is not going to take your job. "There is no future but what we make for ourselves" — the guiding principle of the Terminator franchise. Unfortunately, the real-life principle has largely amounted to, "There is no future but what Hollywood makes for the rest of us." This is one of those franchises where studios have rebooted, soft-rebooted, legacy-sequeled, and generally mangled what was once an innovative and interesting storyline into an incomprehensible mess — to the point that the saga's main star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is now done with the franchise.
It's a sad state of affairs for this once great sci-fi story. Still, there's hope as long as creator James Cameron harbors a desire to make another Terminator movie based on A.I. It's a sad state of affairs for this once great sci-fi story. Still, there's hope as long as creator James Cameron harbors a desire to make another Terminator movie based on A.I. For the time being, though, we're left with what has become an unnecessarily complicated Terminator timeline, leaving anyone trying to figure out the correct order to watch the Terminator movies confused. Even the first movie, 1984's...

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we take a look at Kate Bush's King of the Mountain, directed by Jimmy T. Murakami. With the recent passing of Roger Corman, I would like to look back at the work of one of his protegés, and especially his music videos. Many people are aware that Corman helped launch the careers of people like Martin Scorsese, Joe Dante, James Cameron, Jack Nicholson and many many more. But one of the lesser known names is Jimmy T. Murakami, even though I consider him to be quite great. Murakami started out as an uncredited co-director on Humanoids from the Deep, before making one of Corman's bigger budget...

One of the world's highest-grossing and most famous film directors started out as a special effects artist for the king of B-movies, Roger Corman, known for his ability to shoot quickly and cheaply. Perhaps it was Corman's projects that made James Cameron swear off making low-budget movies, eventually becoming the first director in the world to receive budgets of $100 and $200 million.
Today, Cameron is considered to be not only one of the most important science fiction directors of our time, but also one of the most successful directors in general, whose films break unattainable box office records and are incredibly loved by audiences.
But few fans know that at the very beginning of the 2000s, Cameron created a sci-fi project for the small screens starring Jessica Alba – Dark Angel.
What is Dark Angel About?
An electromagnetic pulse caused by terrorists in 2009 has left the US in a state of decline.

Review: Jennifer Lopez has been in five films over the last two years, and another, Unstoppable, is still on the way. After her acclaimed 2019 performance in Hustlers, Lopez has starred in two romantic comedies, two action films, and a bizarre music video-slash-biopic monstrosity linked to her latest album. Now, her second Netflix feature in as many years, Atlas, aims to be J.Lo’s Marvel-esque blockbuster but falls short in every conceivable way. Directed by San Andreas helmer Brad Peyton, Atlas is a special effects-laden foray into the most cliched science fiction genre offering I have seen in a long time.
