Mickey Rooney and the Invention of the Teen Idol
Image
This essay is excerpted from Hollywood High: a Totally Epic, Way Opinionated History of Teen Movies, by Bruce Handy, out May 20 from Avid Reader Press.

Leap Day, 1940. The city: Los Angeles. The place: the Ambassador Hotel’s Cocoanut Grove nightclub, where Hollywood’s biggest names were gathered for the 12th annual Academy Awards ceremony. Among the stars smiling for the cameras: Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier, Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, Bette Davis, Spencer Tracy, Jimmy Stewart, Greer Garson, Hedy Lamar, and emcee Bob Hope.

Professional jealousy was not the evening’s theme, not officially. So surely no one resented the fact that by one important measure — the measure — the answer to the question: Who is the biggest star in the room? was . . . .

None of the above.

Just a month earlier, the nation’s theater owners had conducted their annual poll and named not Gable, not Davis, not Stewart, but the young,...

Sarah Jessica Parker on Why She Didn’t Want to Be in ‘Sex and the City’: “I don’t think I’m suited for that life”
Image
Before becoming the face of Sex and the City, Sarah Jessica Parker wasn’t exactly sold on the idea of joining the show. She had doubts about whether she was cut out for the fast-paced, fashion-heavy world the series promised. In fact, she felt she wasn’t suited for that life at all, unsure if the glitz, glam, and nonstop attention aligned with who she really was off-camera.

But despite her hesitation, Parker took the leap, and the rest is HBO history. Looking back, it’s wild to think the woman who defined Carrie Bradshaw nearly passed on the role that changed everything.

Michelle Pfeiffer's Forgotten 1985 Fantasy Flop Is The Most-Watched Movie On Tubi's Charts
Image
The '80s weren't a great time for the fantasy genre, at least in terms of commercial success. The decade produced multiple fantasy box office bombs that, in retrospect, deserve a second chance, including the beloved fantasy classic "Labyrinth," which, it might surprise you to learn, was a certified flop upon its initial release. Even legendary director Richard Donner struggled when he unleashed "Ladyhawke" upon the world and was met with indifference at best.

The filmmaker had cemented the concept of the modern blockbuster with 1978's "Superman" before being unceremoniously removed from the sequel and replaced with director Richard Lester, despite the fact Donner had already shot most of the movie. After that, Donner fell into something of a dry spell. 1980's "Inside Moves" was received well enough, but Donner's Richard Pryor-led 1982 comedy "The Toy" was panned despite making a decent profit.

In 1985, Donner made the switch to fantasy with "Ladyhawke,...

The film is written by Coen and Tricia Cooke, who previously worked with Qualley on Drive Away Dolls, and also stars Aubrey Plaza, Charlie Day, and Billy Eichner. ‘Ferris Bueller’s Matthew Broderick & Alan Ruck Reunite In ‘The Best Is Yet To Come’
Image
Exclusive: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off stars Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck are negotiating to reunite in The Best Is Yet to Come, a comedy that Allan Loeb scripted and Jon Turteltaub will direct. The film is backed by MRC, and Lionsgate is in talks to distribute. It is based on the French film of the same title.

Amy Baer is producing through her Gidden Media banner, and the executive producer is Dimitri Rassam, who produced the 2019 original through his company Chapter 2. Loeb also will be an EP.

The last time Broderick and Ruck held the screen together, the latter played the disillusioned son of a wealthy man, a dad who seemed to prize his 1961 Ferrari 250 Gt California Spyder more than his son. That led the kid to launch the classic car out a glass window, a dilemma even his best pal Ferris (Broderick) is hard pressed to fix. Here,...

This Was George Clooney’s Excuse for Never Showing Up on ‘The Conners’
Image
Over the course of its seven post-Roseanne seasons, The Conners has welcomed a number of celebrity guest stars to the show, including Matthew Broderick, Candice Bergen, Patton Oswalt, Whoopi Goldberg and Dan Aykroyd, who thankfully resisted the urge to bust out his harmonica and force John Goodman into performing a Blues Brothers 2000 reunion concert.

But there are a number of actors from the original Roseanne series who, barring a last-minute cameo on tonight’s series finale, simply never appeared on The Conners.

Executive producers Bruce Helford and Dave Caplan addressed some of these absences in a recent interview with TVLine. On the subject of Leon, Roseanne’s former boss-turned-business partner, played by the late Martin Mull, the producers claimed that they wanted to find a way to include him on the show, but it became a “moot issue” after he passed away last year. “It would have been a conversation,...

The Criterion Collection has announced their July 2025 slate of titles, delivering Stanley Kubrick, a film noir classic, an underrated New Hollywood gem, and more. Let’s check out what Criterion has in store:

First up is Fritz Lang’s The Big Heat (spine #1269), a scorcher of a noir that offers Glenn Ford and femme fatale Gloria Grahame in some of their finest performances (and don’t forget Lee Marvin!). With stellar black and white cinematography by Charles Lang (no relation), The Big Heat stands out in a decade crowded with some of the greatest film noirs ever. Special features include two new commentaries, an archival audio interview with director Lang (co-conducted by Peter Boganovich) and interviews with filmmakers Michael Mann and Martin Scorsese.

Breaking Bad: Bryan Cranston Was Both Dramatic and Scary but Vince Gilligan Had Only 1 Demand for Walter White
Image
When one thinks of Bryan Cranston, it is his Breaking Bad role that first comes to mind and not his role as the hilarious Hal from Malcolm in the Middle. But audiences have the boon of hindsight now that they have seen the actor kill it as Walter White in the AMC drama. But back then, it was a tough sell.

The network reportedly wanted a star for the role of Walter White, but creator Vince Gilligan was Cranston’s biggest supporter. The duo had worked together in an episode of The X-Files, when Gilligan was a writer on the show. While Cranston fulfilled two of the showrunner’s criteria for Walt, there was one thing he had to nail to be the man for the job.

More celebs who attended included Adam Driver, Darren Criss, Matthew Broderick, Peter Gallagher, and Broadway stars Ali Stroker and NaTasha Yvette Williams.

The event was held in honor of what would have been Paul Newman‘s 100th birthday year. His daughter Clea Newman welcomed the audience by saying, “To Dad, changing the lives of kids with serious medical conditions was more than a vision, it was a mission. He would be so proud.”

SeriousFun Children’s Network was founded in 1988 by Paul Newman to create camps for kids with serious illnesses and give them a chance to just be kids,...

Americans Turn to ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ for Some Foreboding Education on Tariffs
Image
Does anyone know what happens when a country slaps massive tariffs on the rest of the world all at once? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Yesterday, President Donald Trump officially launched his world trade war as the White House announced sweeping tariffs on our every international trading partner in a move that confounded and frightened economists from across the political spectrum. While history has repeatedly shown that such aggressive taxing on imported goods both fails to fix a country’s economic woes and provokes retaliatory action from foreign governments that worsens recessions and depressions alike, Trump is poised to prove hundreds of years of precedent and the entire worldwide economics community wrong, even if that group includes Ben Stein.

Apparently, neither Trump nor his supporters are big John Hughes fans, as they may have been able to avoid the impending and fast-moving financial crisis if they had just stopped and looked...

Now, a Quentin Tarantino regular joins the cast.

Variety reports that Christoph Waltz has joined the cast of Only Murders in the Building Season 5. Waltz's role is currently under wraps, but it will be a recurring role in the filming season.

Matthew Broderick movies: 12 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Matthew Broderick is a true star of stage, screen and television who first came to moviegoers' attention over four decades ago in the thriller "WarGames." He then triumphed in comedies, dramas and musicals both on stage and in film. Add to that his long-term marriage to Sarah Jessica Parker, and there's a lot for him to celebrate.

For his stage work, Broderick has won two Tony Awards (as Best Featured Actor for 1983's "Brighton Beach Memoirs" and as Best Actor for the 1995 revival of the musical "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying"), as well as an additional Best Actor nom for 2001's "The Producers" for a performance that he brought to the screen in the 2005 film. In 1993, he was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy for his supporting performance in "A Life in the Theatre." And for his film work, Broderick earned a Golden Globe nomination for 1986's "Ferris Bueller's Day Off,...

Lights Shine For Broadway’s ‘Operation Mincemeat’ Marquee After Tariff-Caused Delay
Image
The marquee lights were shining bright for Broadway’s Operation Mincemeat musical last night, with the tariff-delayed shipment of the specialty Satco Decorative 11W LED Ceramic Yellow Indicator bulbs sourced in bulk from a China-based vendor having arrived yesterday and installed last night.

When the musical comedy began previews at the John Golden Theatre on February 15, lights for the marquee named “Operation Mincemeat” were still held up in the tariff red tape and so the show went on without the traditional name in marquee lights..

According to producers, the bulbs arrived in the United States Thursday, March 13, and the marquee was finally illuminated after last evening’s performance at the Golden.

In a statement, producer Jon Thoday said, “Broadway is shining just a little more brightly, thanks to the tireless teams who navigated labyrinthine...

1 of Matthew Broderick's Best Movies Is a 38-Year-Old Sci-Fi Film He Secretly Hates
Image
Quick LinksWhat is the Story of Project X?Matthew Broderick Made His Dislike For Project X Known While Making Another MovieProject X Isn't Nearly as Bad as Matthew Broderick Thinks It Is

Matthew Broderick became one of the most beloved movie stars of the 1980s with iconic comedies like Ferris Bueller's Day Off, thrillers like War Games, and acclaimed dramas like Glory. 1987's Project X, in which Broderick plays an air force pilot assigned to a suspicious top-secret military experiment involving chimps, unfortunately, didn't quite reach the same level of success as those other films. Despite this, it's one that still carries quite a positive reputation, with Broderick giving a likable performance alongside Helen Hunt. As it turns out, however, Broderick doesn't necessarily feel the same way. Unlike many other actors, he's never been one to express regrets about certain projects or speak out about any negative experiences he's...

‘Friendship’ Review: Tim Robinson & Paul Rudd Lead Anxiety-Inducing Bromance From Andrew DeYoung — SXSW
Image
With Tim Robinson’s first starring film role in writer-director Andrew DeYoung’s A24 debut Friendship, the comedian hits every cringe note with assistance from Paul Rudd and Kate Mara.

The anxiety-inducing dark bromance stars Robinson as suburban family man Craig, who quickly develops a man crush on his new neighbor Austin (Rudd), a beloved local weatherman with his own rock band and an eclectic collection of ancient artifacts.

But his desperate attempts to impress his new pal only makes things disastrously awkward, reverberating through his life and impacting his marriage, job and entire wellbeing as he gets recurring nosebleeds throughout, which Robinson uses as a hilarious physical comedy device.

“This is why guys shouldn’t have friends,” Craig gripes in one scene, which feels like a good thesis for this film who’s desperate for connection but keeps getting in his own way.

Rudd is the ultimate match for...

And soon after, she loses custody of her daughter, Angela to said loser ex-husband. Godzilla 1998 Is Streaming For Free On Tubi
Image
Filmmaker Roland Emmerich’s much-maligned Godzilla (1998) is never going to make any Top 10 lists featuring the King of the Monsters' must-see installments from the film franchise. However, if fans and/or newcomers want to give the movie, which so poorly represents the world’s most famous kaiju, a chance — there will never be a better time to do it. The Matthew Broderick-led Godzilla is now available to stream for free on Tubi.

The main problem with co-writer and director Emmerich’s take on the 71-year-old monster, which is almost too egregious to comprehend, was the way 1998’s Godzilla was inaccurately designed to look more like a dinosaur from Jurassic Park than the all-powerful kaiju. Plus, it didn’t help that Emmerich’s film decided to pull a King Kong (1933) and kill off the ambiguous creature to wrap things up. The flick’s co-writer and producer, Dean Devlin, said in...
