Havoc, John Woo, and how action cinema crosses cultures and continents
Image
The action cinema of John Wick, Havoc and John Woo’s The Killer has constantly evolved as it’s travelled between filmmakers and eras.

Now on Netflix, writer-director Gareth Evans’ Havoc is an ultra-violent stew of influences. It’s set in a benighted US city, but was shot in Wales; its bullet-strewn action is directly inspired by Hong Kong filmmaker John Woo.

Then again, action cinema has always been a particularly international genre, taking in disparate bits of American westerns, low-key French thrillers and more besides. When John Woo directed A Better Tomorrow, released in 1986, its contemporary gangland setting and ferocious shoot-outs changed the look and feel of action cinema forever. Widely credited with inventing what was later dubbed the ‘heroic bloodshed’ genre, it made a star out of its lead, Chow Yun-fat.

Woo continued to hone his signature style – slow-motion photography, close-quarters action, and his characters’ habit of holding...

Netflix Unpacks Apac

Singing from the same Kim sheet: Sara Merican headed to Tokyo this week for a Netflix Asia Pacific showcase event, which brought together many of the streamer’s key players from the region. Amid the manga and k-drama deluge, she sat down with Minyoung Kim, Netflix’s VP of Content for Apac to discuss everything from the streamer’s multi-billion-dollar program and movie investment in Korea to how she hopes zombie films from Indonesia and Thailand will land later this year. She even got into talking about the chance of live sports coming out of Apac (spoiler: not likely). An interesting nugget was the disclosure that Netflix is potentially on track to spend even more...

Luc Besson Talks Risk Averse Studios & Joy Of Making L.A. & Smartphone-Shot Romance ‘June & John’: “It Was Just Two Actors & A Director”
Image
Four decades have passed since Luc Besson found fame as an emerging 26-year-old director with thriller Subway starring Isabelle Adjani and Christopher Lambert.

His feature credits since range from early stylized breakouts The Big Blue and Nikita; to sci-fi hits The Fifth Element and Lucy, and historic dramas The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc and The Lady, at the same time as building film company EuropaCorp and producing blockbuster franchises Taxi and Taken.

As the 40th anniversary of his big screen breakthrough approaches this fall, Besson is rolling out ultra-low budget romance June & John. Shot entirely with smartphones in L.A. during the Covid 19 pandemic with a 12-person crew, the guerilla-style production took Besson back to his early filmmaking years.

“It was very joyous. It was really two actors and a director because of the lockdown. From the time they were first in costume to the time we...

The 25 Greatest Action Movies of All Time!
Image
What are the greatest action movies of all time? It’s a controversial question, isn’t it? Any time any publication or site puts out a new list of what they consider the best action movies of all time, it can’t help but generate a ton of controversy. Nevertheless, we here at JoBlo have decided to throw our hats into the ring with a list we really hope generates some nostalgia among our viewers but also encourages them to seek out the movies on this list that they may not have seen. But first, some may wonder where superhero movies are on this list. Given how broad that genre is, we decided to stick to old-school action, so we have left them off the list, as they deserve their own ranking. There are also a few absences from the list, notably some Jackie Chan Hong Kong films (like Police Story...

Scarlett Johansson's Polarizing Sci-Fi Action Movie Becomes A Netflix Hit After 11 Years
Image
Luc Besson's outlandish 2014 sci-fi actioner "Lucy" was a bigger hit than you remember. Modestly budgeted at only $40 million (much of which likely went to the salary of star Scarlett Johansson) and armed with an incredibly ludicrous plot, "Lucy" made over $450 million at the international box office, baffling just about everyone. Critics were merely warm on "Lucy," giving it largely indifferent and/or vaguely positive reviews. The movie has a 67% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 236 reviews), with the words "silly" and "ridiculous" being used a lot to describe it.

As of this writing, "Lucy" is becoming a hit again on Netflix, with /FlixPatrol reporting that the film has ranked among the service's top 10 movies in the U.S. since (at least) April 15, 2025, on through to April 21. No one can really say why an 11-year-old sci-fi thriller has suddenly grabbed the attention of so many Netflix subscribers, but we...

Scarlett Johansson in Lucy (2014)
Lucy (2014) Ending Explained: Will Lucy Survive An Unexplainable Human Experience?
Scarlett Johansson in Lucy (2014)
Lucy is an American action thriller with many undertones of spirituality laced into action sequences, the characterization of a super-human female who unlocks every cell in her brain. The film is a close look into the brain’s functionality that works on a level unknown to humankind. It is fiction supplying enough thrill for us to understand and align with the science of possibilities for the future of humankind.

Director Luc Besson moves us with a film that boggles our brains (pun intended considering what the film talks about) with facts that make us think about the possibilities of the brain functioning at such high levels; the consequences of the same seem almost ridiculous. Contrarily, the way medicine and the world are going, and it does not sound entirely impossible.

Lucy (2014) Movie Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

Natalie Portman Reflects On Being “Really Sexualized” As Child Actor: “A Long Lolita Phase”
Image
After making her onscreen debut at 11, Natalie Portman quickly learned to separate herself from her public image.

The Oscar winner recently opened up about being subjected to “a long Lolita phase” when she was “really sexualized” as a child actor, making her debut performance in Luc Besson’s Léon: The Professional.

“I think there’s a public understanding of me that’s different from who I am,” she told Jenna Ortega for Interview. “I’ve talked about it a little before—about how, as a kid, I was really sexualized, which I think happens to a lot of young girls who are onscreen. I felt very scared by it. Obviously sexuality is a huge part of being a kid, but I wanted it to be inside of me, not directed towards me. And I felt like my way of protecting myself was to be like, ‘I’m so serious. I’m so studious.

Scarlett Johansson's Sci-fi Film From The Fifth Element Director Becomes a Hit on Streaming Ahead of Her Directorial Debut
Image
In between her role as Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Scarlett Johansson starred in a very successful sci-fi film. In 2014, she teamed up with The Fifth Element director Luc Besson for Lucy.

The Oscar-nominated actress played the lead character, a woman who gained psychokinetic abilities after being injected with a synthetic drug. The sci-fi film was a huge commercial hit for Universal Pictures, which distributed the film internationally, although it didn't boast the best reviews from the audience. 11 years after its premiere, Lucy found success again on streaming, Tudum reveals.

Lucy just returned to the charts on Netflix, debuting in fourth place in the U.S. charts. The sci-fi film only made it in the top 10 domestically, but it was enough to enter the global charts, too, in ninth place. In the week between Apr. 7 and 13, Lucy received 2.6 million views and 3.8 hours viewed.

The French director wrote and directed the film,...

Natalie Portman Says She Was Scared by Being Sexualized in 'Leon: The Professional'
Image
Natalie Portman is often seen as a serious figure, but that isn’t exactly how the actress looks at herself. While in conversation with Jenna Ortega for Interview Magazine, the actress revealed how her early start in the industry, and the sexualization that came with it, led to her putting up barriers that many people just see as being her.

Portman made her movie debut at the age of 12 in Leon: The Professional, in which she played a young girl with an uncomfortable relationship with Jean Reno’s middle-aged killer and courted controversy for the “Lolita” style appearance in the film – which was actually meant to see the pair become lovers in an early draft of the script. Speaking to Ortega, Portman said:

“I think there’s a public understanding of me that’s different from who I am. I’ve talked about it a little before—about how, as a kid,...

Jason Statham Played A Small Part In One Of The World's Biggest Video Game Franchises
Image
No, the headline of this article is not a reference to Jason Statham's leading role in Uwe Boll's roundly mocked film "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale," one of the most derided of all video game adaptations. Instead, this refers to some voice work that he did early in his career. It seems that Statham played a minor voice role in the very first "Call of Duty" video game in 2003. "Call of Duty" was a military-based shooter game set during World War II, released on the PC, and eventually for the XBox 360, and the PlayStation 3. It was a big hit in the early 2000s, and spawned a massive franchise that is still going strong to this day. There are five games in the original World War II continuity, eight games in the "Modern Warfare" spinoff series (set in the present), seven games in the "Black Ops" spinoff,...

Popular Movies You Didn’t Know Are Actually Foreign Movie Remakes
Image
Hollywood might be the world’s largest film industry, but even the entertainment powerhouse has drawn ideas from international films. While remakes have always existed, most cinema buffs remain ignorant that some of their beloved Hollywood blockbusters owe their origins to overseas classics.

The rise of remakes in Hollywood is no coincidence—studios often lean toward stories that have already proven successful. But in doing so, the originals sometimes get overshadowed. Here’s a look at ten Hollywood hits that were actually inspired by international films, proving that great storytelling transcends borders.

Martin Scorsese’s The Departed is often hailed as a modern classic, but did you know it’s actually a remake of a Hong Kong crime thriller? It is the remake of a film named Infernal Affairs. The movie became very popular and also paved...

Gary Oldman & Bruce Willis’ 28-Year-Old Sci-Fi Film Polarized Critics En Route to Becoming One of the Most Successful Films of the 1990s
Image
In a decade of sci-fi blockbusters, the 90s delivered some of the genre's biggest hits, from The Matrix and Jurassic Park to Men in Black and Starship Troopers. But most sci-fi of the time followed a familiar formula: sleek and somewhat serious. That was until The Fifth Element, a neon-soaked sci-fi comedy that brought space operas, high fashion, and wild, comic-book energy.

Starring Bruce Willis as a cynical ex-soldier and Gary Oldman as a cartoonish villain, the film bent the genre rules. And, while critics didn’t know what to make of it, audiences did. It became one of the highest-grossing sci-fi films of the decade, turning its opposing style into part of its legacy.

The Fifth Element Is a Dystopian Classic

The Fifth Element follows Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis), a former special forces soldier turned taxi driver in a futuristic New York. But when LeeLoo – a genetically modified alien...

A Tribute To 'Amelie' Director Jean Pierre Jeunet— Whimsical Worlds of Imagination and Coincidence
Image
When we think of French cinema, there are many influential names that come to mind including Francois Truffaut, Agnes Varda, or Luc Besson. Two sides are drawn when analyzing French movies where one is a realistic approach to the art form and the other is of a more romanticized, fantastical style of storytelling. Reality and fantasy are a French director’s two paths to choose. Jean Pierre Jeunet is an exception as he manages to take inspiration from both of these sides while also finding success in major film markets outside his native homeland. Prevelant across all his projects is his charming idiosyncratic style in which he uses the genres of fantasy, romantic comedy, science fiction, and even war to “create idealized realities or give relevance to mundane situations.” His films are some of the most accessible French films to international audiences and this article will provide a feasible guide...

Vine Alternative’s CEO James Moore on Village Roadshow’s Bankruptcy, the Legal Fight With Warner Bros., and What’s Next for the Company Behind “The Matrix’ (Exclusive)
Image
While the fate of Village Roadshow, the prominent producer and financier of films such as “The Matrix” and “Joker” which filed for Chapter 11 in the U.S. earlier this week, is up in the air, Vine Alternative Investments, the former white knight which rescued the company from heavy financial woes in 2017, is ready to move on.

But it won’t run away, says CEO James Moore, speaking to Variety while on a business trip in Paris.

Village Roadshow’s financial strain (estimated at $223.8 million in asset-backed secured notes and $163.1 million of senior secured debt according to court documents) have been an open secret in Hollywood: they even made it onto the Writers Guild of America’s “strike list” after allegedly failing to pay its writers on several projects. The company also lost its well-respected CEO, Steve Mosko, back in January. Yet, the news of the bankruptcy filing has been met with skepticism within the industry.

When It Comes to Female-Driven Action Movies, This 35-Year-Old Powerhouse Remains One of the Best and Most Influential
Image
Back in 1990, Luc Besson's fourth feature film, La Femme Nikita, hit U.S. arthouses, and few action aficionados could have possibly seen it coming. The French filmmaker was barely known on these shores, but the film's unique premise immediately made waves, as it followed a troubled street criminal, played by Anne Parillaud, whose sentence for murdering a police officer is commuted in exchange for her reinvention as a trained government killer. The late, great film critic Roger Ebertheralded the film, and America ate it up. At the time, Hollywood had mostly become inured to the more passive "Bond girls," who rarely got involved in the action. That would soon change.

"You Need Space To Put In Injections & Needles": Milla Jovovich's Science Rationale Helped Create The Fifth Element's Most Iconic Costume
Image
The Fifth Element star Milla Jovovich reveals how her science rationale helped to create the film's most iconic costume. Directed by Luc Besson, the 1997 sci-fi stars Bruce Willis as Korben Dallas, a cab driver who becomes caught up in a quest to find a great cosmic weapon. Jovovich costars as Leeloo, the titular Fifth Element, who joins forces with Korben to defeat Zorg (Gary Oldman) and an evil force threatening Earth. For some of the film, Leeloo wears an outfit that consists only of white bandages, which, combined with her orange hair, made for an especially memorable character design.

In a recent video for GQ in which she breaks down her most iconic characters, Jovovich reveals that she played a crucial role in the development of Leeloo's bandage costume. Jovovich recalls brainstorming the character's look with Besson before suggesting that there would be a practical and scientific reason for Leeloo...

“That Was Just An Outtake”: Gary Oldman’s Iconic “Everyone!” Line Delivery Was Never Meant For The Final Cut Of Leon: The Professional
Image
Léon: The Professionalstar Gary Oldman reveals that his iconic "Everyone!" line delivery was never intended to make the final cut of the movie. Released in 1994, director Luc Besson's action thriller stars Jean Reno as Léon, an assassin who takes the 12-year-old Mathilda (Natalie Portman) under his wing after her family is murdered. Oldman plays Léon: The Professional's main villain, Stansfield, a corrupt and violent DEA agent. One of the most iconic lines of Oldman's career comes when he demands that a subordinate bring him "everyone" as backup before he then repeats the word in an exaggerated yell.

During a recent interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Oldman reveals that his shouting delivery of the word "everyone" was actually intended as a joke for Besson. The actor recalls wanting to make the director laugh on one particular take, but then the moment ended up in the final cut of the movie.

Why Liam Neeson Felt Embarrassed By The Script For One Of His Biggest Hits
Image
When the trailer for "Taken" first started making the rounds in 2008, no one thought it was terribly out of character for Liam Neeson to star in a straight-ahead action flick. With films like "Darkman," "Rob Roy" and "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace" on his resume, the 1993 Best Actor nominee for "Schindler's List" certainly seemed comfortable making genre movies. The surprise was the five years that led up to it. After failing to snag a well-deserved second Best Actor nomination for "Kinsey" in 2004, he segued to supporting parts in "Kingdom of Heaven," "Batman Begins" and "Breakfast on Pluto," which suggested he was either getting passed over for lead roles, didn't fit the star type for whatever was being offered, or entering the character actor phase of his career.

After the moody Western "Seraphim Falls" failed to catch on with moviegoers (despite the intriguing pairing of Neeson and Pierce Brosnan), next up was "Taken.

Martin Klebba, Chris Pratt, Alan Tudyk, Anthony Mackie, Devyn Dalton, and Millie Bobby Brown in The Electric State (2025)
6 Movies To Watch If You Liked ‘The Electric State’ on Netflix
Martin Klebba, Chris Pratt, Alan Tudyk, Anthony Mackie, Devyn Dalton, and Millie Bobby Brown in The Electric State (2025)
Movies To Watch If You Liked ‘The Electric State’ on Netflix: Anthony and Joe Russo have had one of the most fascinating career trajectories of any filmmakers working in Hollywood. Despite having only a few comedy features to their name, the duo was hired to revolutionize the Marvel Cinematic Universe when they crafted “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which was instantly hailed as one of the greatest comic book films ever made. Although the Russo brothers continued to earn praise for their subsequent work on “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Avengers: Endgame,” their work outside of Marvel Studios has been rather disappointing.

The Russo brothers’ latest film is “The Electric State,” a post-apocalyptic science fiction action comedy that is based on an acclaimed graphic novel of the same name. Although a $320 million budget and the involvement of stars like Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown would suggest great things,...

After some smaller roles in the late '80s, Jovovich first rose to stardom with her turn as Leeloo in Luc Besson's The Fifth Element. The years since have seen her star in everything from Spike Lee's He Got Gameto Ben Stiller's Zoolander and its sequel, as well as David Harbour's Hellboy reboot.

Her most notable project to date, however, remains that of the Resident Evil movie franchise, an adaptation of Capcom's survival horror video game series of the same name. Partnered with her husband, writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson, Jovovich carried the role of heroine Alice through six movies, while also having starred in Anderson's adaptations of The Three Musketeers and George R.R. Martin's In the Lost Lands. Gary Oldman Reveals His Iconic ‘Everyone’ Scene From ‘Léon’ Was Meant as a Joke | Video
Image
Gary Oldman’s iconic “Bring Me Everyone” scene from “Léon: The Professional” was originally just an outtake the actor filmed to get a laugh out of director Luc Besson, but the filmmaker ended up keeping it.

“I did a couple of takes, ‘Bring me everyone, everyone.’ And to make Luc Besson laugh as a joke, I went to the sound guys and I said, ‘I’m going to be really, really loud,'” Oldman explained during a sit-down with “The Late Show’s” Stephen Colbert. “And I did that, and he kept it and put it in the film — that was just an outtake. It was just me having fun.”

The “Slow Horses” actor went on to give more details about his time shooting the movie in New York, mentioning that during a building explosion scene and while a huge crowd was watching the crew work, a real-life bank robbery took place across the street.

“When I Saw The Finished Product, I Felt Like He Was Mad At Me”: Milla Jovovich Thinks Her 1999 Historical Epic Was Torpedoed By Her & The Director’s Real-Life Divorce, Which Left A Career-Best Performance On The Cutting Room Floor
Image
Actor Milla Jovovich saw her breakthrough role in 1997, when she played Leeloo in The Fifth Element. Jovovich had taken on supporting roles in movies such as Chaplin and Dazed and Confused, but her bigger role in The Fifth Element made Hollywood aware of who she was. The sci-fi movie was also significant in her life in that it brought together her and director Luc Besson. Besson and Jovovich entered a relationship and married in 1997.

However, Jovovich and Besson's romantic bond was not long for this world. While the pair would go on to make another movie together, The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc, in 1999, their marriage ended up falling apart. Besson and Jovovich got divorced in 1999, after only two years of marriage. Now, the actor has been married to director Paul W.S. Anderson, who she also met on a set, since 2009. But reflecting on her divorce, Jovovich recalls...

Christina Ricci Missed Out on Starring in 'Léon: The Professional' for a Ridiculous Reason
Image
Christina Ricci has been an accomplished actress and has starred in several popular films and series since her big screen debut in Mermaids (1990). But one role she missed out on was that of Mathilda in the classic 1994 film, Léon: The Professional, losing out to Natalie Portman. And in a new interview with the YouTube show, First We Feast (via The Wrap), Ricci reveals the ridiculous reason why: she was "too common and healthy looking."

That may come as a surprise to some, considering one of Ricci's most famous roles was the rather gothic Wednesday Addams in the early 1990s hit film, The Addams Family and its sequel. She explained to her Yellowjackets co-star Melanie Lynskey why she lost out on her "dream role:"

"I really wanted to be in 'Léon: The Professional,' but I was too common and healthy-looking. What a time to be twelve."

"I Was Too Common & Healthy Looking": Christina Ricci Reveals The Awful Reason Why Her 12-Year-Old Self Lost A Major Role To Natalie Portman
Image
Christina Ricci talks about how she lost a major role to Natalie Portman. The Yellowjackets star started her career as a child star, featuring in the 1990 movie, Mermaids, and scored her big break portraying Wednesday Addams in the 1991 movie The Addams Family. She transitioned into more adult-themed roles in 200 Cigarettes, The Ice Storm, Buffalo '66, and many more. In the Tim Burton-directed Netflix series Wednesday, she appeared as Marilyn Thornhill, a teacher at Nevermore Academy.

Most recently, Ricci played a sadistic healthcare worker in the hit show Yellowjackets. The show follows a group of girls who are stranded in the wilderness after a plane crash, taking place in dual timelines. Ricci's character, Misty, is one of the survivors in the present timeline who is still haunted by what happened to them in the woods. While promoting the show's season 3, Ricci reflects on her childhood career, where she admits...

Milla Jovovich Reveals How 'The Fifth Element' Changed Her Career
Image
The Fifth Element is widely regarded as one of the best sci-fi action films ever made, due in no small part to the amazing performances from stars Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich. Their on-screen chemistry was off the charts, and though Willis was already an established actor by 1997, the film helped make Jovovich a global superstar early on in her career. Now, the In the Lost Lands actress has revealed which specific scene it was in Luc Besson's movie that completely changed her life.

Speaking with GQ about her more than three-decade career, Jovovich fondly looked back on The Fifth Element to recall that it was the scene where her character of Leeloo is encased in glass and being hounded by government officials that sent her career on a trajectory she never could have imagined. The reason, she said, is because it really taught her about what it meant to truly be an actress.

“That Was The Scene That Changed My Life As An Actress”: Milla Jovovich Reveals The Fifth Element Scene That Was So Impactful It Still Makes Her Cry
Image
Milla Jovovich explains why one Leeloo scene in The Fifth Element had a profound impact on her as a performer. Released in 1997 and directed by Luc Besson, the sci-fi adventure film stars Bruce Willis as Korben Dallas, a cab driver who becomes wrapped up in a quest to find a legendary cosmic weapon. The Fifth Element, which marks one of Jovovich's first major acting roles, features Jovovich's Leeloo in a prominent role as the titular element, and she comes to team up with Korben to defeat a great evil that threatens Earth.

In a recent interview with GQ in which she breaks down her most iconic characters, Jovovich looks back on The Fifth Element, singling out her first big scene as Leeloo as the one that she found particularly powerful. This Jason Statham-Guy Ritchie Collab Is Better Than Its Rt Score Suggests
Image
While Jason Statham may owe his acting career to Guy Ritchie for giving him his start, critics felt differently after panning their third cinematic collaboration, Revolver. Torpedoed by ungodly expectations caused by Snatch and Lock,Stock and Two Smoking Barrels before it, Revolver is a much better movie than credited for, requiring repeat viewings to see through the style-over-substance charge the movie has been leveled with.

As Revolver celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2025, giving the film another spin is recommended for Statham and Ritchie fans. With a screenplay co-written by venerated French filmmaker Luc Besson, Revolver was unfairly dismissed during its initial release and deserves another shot. It may not be the best work by the talent involved, but there's no way Revolver should hold a lowly 13% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Fifth Element Director's 8-Year-Old Action Flop Becomes Netflix Streaming Hit

Not every movie released in theaters has success, and some of them end up losing studios millions of dollars. However, some of them end up winning some of their investment back on streaming.
