This June, Movistar Plus+ will unveil “Pedro x Javis,” a three-part documentary series paying tribute to the life and work of celebrated Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. Created and hosted by celebrated filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known locally as Los Javis, the series blends documentary storytelling with musical performances and reimagined scenes from Almodóvar’s films in a bold new format.
At the heart of “Pedro x Javis” is an intimate, in-depth conversation between the three directors. Filmed over several days, their exchanges are rich with unexpected confessions, emotional memories, and previously unrevealed insights into the two-time Academy Award winner’s creative journey. “I think I’ve talked too much,” Almodóvar wryly commented on the process.
The series features contributions from many of Almodóvar’s most iconic collaborators, including actresses Penélope Cruz, Julieta Serrano, Rossy de Palma, Bibiana Fernández, Loles León, Carmen Machi, Lola Dueñas and Leonor Watling. It...

2025 has been one of the weaker years for the film industry as high-budget films like Captain America: Brave New World and Snow White have failed at both impressing the audience and at the box office. The Anthony Bourdain A24 biopic “Tony” is looking to be as authentic as possible — and have real chefs star alongside “The Holdovers” breakout Dominic Sessa, who is portraying late icon Bourdain. Atomic Honey Casting posted an open casting call seeking “real restaurant kitchen staff with unique, dynamic personalities” to play roles in the film. IndieWire confirmed with A24 that the casting will take place for a shoot in Provincetown, Ma from May through July 2025.
While no prior acting experience is required for the aforementioned roles, prior kitchen experience is a must. The casting call is looking for males of all ethnicities.
Sessa stars as a young Bourdain in the origin story of the “Kitchen Confidential” author and “Parts Unknown” host. Antonio Banderas co-stars in an unspecified role. “Tony” will be directed by Matt Johnson (“Blackberry”) with Todd Bartels and Lou Howe writing the script. The film was announced in April 2025, with Bourdain’s estate producing.

In 2010, a few months after the last episode of The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien aired, O’Brien embarked upon The Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour. Through the spring and summer of that year, he traveled around the U.S. and Canada with a variety show based on the titular idea: After NBC canceled his version of the long-running late-night show and replaced him with his predecessor, Jay Leno, O’Brien contractually had to wait before launching another show. Less prominent was the fact that O’Brien’s TV time-out was conditional on the exit package he had negotiated, which paid him $32.5 million, plus $12 million for his former Late Night staffers, who had moved to Los Angeles when O’Brien was promoted to The Tonight Show — so while he was certainly done wrong by NBC, it’s not like he was actually entertainment’s biggest victim, despite how he portrayed himself.

Apparently, Max subscribers are looking for something steamy -- because this erotic thriller starring Nicole Kidman is a top choice on HBO and Discovery's proprietary streaming platform.
According to FlixPatrol, the movie is crushing the Max charts — so, what is it about in the first place? For the uninitiated, "Babygirl" — which hit theaters in 2024 and is written and directed by Halina Reijn — centers around Romy Mathis (Kidman), a New York City CEO who has a "happy" home life with her husband Jacob (Antonio Banderas) and daughters Isabel and Nora (Esther McGregor and Vaughan Reilly), except for one thing: she's deeply unfulfilled sexually. Enter Samuel, one of Romy's new interns, as played by Harris Dickinson (who's known for projects like "Triangle of Sadness" and "The Iron Claw"), with whom Romy starts an affair ... but when Samuel starts pushing boundaries by showing up at Romy's home and interacting with her...

Pedro Almodóvar did not hold back on his opinion of Donald Trump as he accepted the 50th annual Chaplin award from Film at Lincoln Center on Monday evening in Manhattan.
As the celebrated Spanish filmmaker expressed his gratitude for the honor at Alice Tully Hall, he said, “I doubted if it was appropriate to come to a country ruled by a narcissistic authority, who doesn’t respect human rights. Trump and his friends, millionaires and oligarchs, cannot convince us that the reality we are seeing with our own eyes is the opposite of what we are living, however much he may twist the words, claiming that they mean the opposite of what they do. Immigrants are not criminals. It was Russia that invaded Ukraine.”

Check out the box office results from 2024, and you'll have to scroll down a while to find a film that isn't part of the barrage of Hollywood sequels, remakes, adaptations, and spinoffs. In fact, you have to go all the way down to the 21st-most-successful film of 2024 to find a wholly-original property. That movie was John Krasinski's "If," and chances are that one'll probably get a sequel too.

Paddington in Peru hasn't been out for long, but it may already be available to stream in some regions. For instance, in the United States, it is already available on Amazon Prime.
That’s where it can get awkward, as some regions get the film on the streaming platform at different times. It’s been in UK cinemas since November last year and hit US movie screens in February. That staggered date approach also applies to when it is released on Netflix.

A24 has officially announced its posthumous Anthony Bourdain biopic, titled Tony. The Holdovers‘ breakout star Dominic Sessa has been confirmed to star in the titular role, with Antonio Banderas also being cast in an undisclosed role.
Matt Johnson (BlackBerry) is set to direct from a screenplay co-written by Todd Bartels and Lou Howe, according to Variety. Tony will be set in Provincetown, Massachusetts in 1976, approximately two years before a 20-year-old Bourdain graduated from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA).
This marks the second time Bourdain’s life has been brought to the screen. In 2005, his exposé/memoir on the culinary industry, Kitchen Confidential, was adapted into a sitcom starring Bradley Cooper.
A posthumous documentary, Roadrunner, was released in 2021 and used AI technology to deepfake Bourdain’s voice as the narrator of the film.
A release date for Tony has yet to be revealed.

Antonio Banderas has joined the cast of the Anthony Bourdain biopic “Tony,” as production kicks off next month with director Matt Johnson, A24, Star Thrower and Zapruder Films announced Wednesday.
The companies also confirmed that “The Holdovers” breakout Dominic Sessa will officially star in the title role as Bourdain.
The film is written by Todd Bartels and Lou Howe. The logline is underwraps but insiders say the film takes place during the summer of 1976, when a young Anthony Bourdain has a life changing summer in Provincetown.
Bourdain achieved global fame with his unflinching book “Kitchen Confidential,” which pulled back the curtain on the cutthroat world of culinary arts with acerbic wit. He then turned that fame into critical acclaim as a travel documentarian, first with the Travel Channel show “No Reservations” and then with his CNN series “Parts Unknown,” the latter of which won 12 Primetime Emmys.

“The Holdovers” star Dominic Sessa will officially don the apron of kitchen legend Anthony Bourdain, alongside Oscar nominee Antonio Banderas in a new biopic from A24.
Banderas’ role is under wraps, and Sessa was reported as in talks for the project from director Matt Johnson (“Blackberry”) last summer. The film, titled “Tony,” will take place in 1976 when a young Bourdain has a life-changing experience working and living in Provincetown, Mass. Cameras are set to roll next month.
Bourdain enrolled in culinary school two years after the film is set. The former executive chef of New York’s Brasserie Les Halles made his name with the 2000 memoir “Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly.” The winner of a posthumous Emmy for his contributions to the unscripted space for series like “No Reservations” and “Parts Unknown,” Bourdain died in 2018 in the French city of Strasbourg, at age 61.
Johnson directs a script from Todd Bartels and Lou Howe.

Sister Actactor Whoopi Goldberg is leading Hollywood's tributes to Pope Francis. The leader of the Catholic Church passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88 after having been in ill health for some time.
Goldberg took to Instagram to share a message of condolence for the late Pope. "He was the closest in a long time that seemed to remember that Christ’s love enveloped believer[s] and [non-believers]," she wrote in the caption alongside an image of herself and the pontiff. "He felt more like Pope John the 23rd who made belief real. Sail on Pope Frances with your love of humanity and laughter."

Martin Scorsese has honored the late Pope Francis with a touching tribute following the news of his death at 88 years old. The legendary director is a regular at the Vatican and had met with the pope several times over the course of his career, building a rapport over their mutual appreciation for art.
“There is so much that can be said about the significance of Pope Francis and everything he meant to the world, to the church, to the papacy. I will leave that to others,” Scorsese said in a statement to Variety. “He was, in every way, a remarkable human being. He acknowledged his own failings. He radiated wisdom. He radiated goodness. He had an ironclad commitment to the good. He knew in his soul that ignorance was a terrible plague on humanity. So he never stopped learning. And he never stopped enlightening. And, he embraced, preached and practiced forgiveness.

Stars: Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson, Sophie Wilde, Antonio Banderas, Esther McGregor, Vaughn Reilly, Victor Slezak | Written and Directed by Halina Reijn
Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson star in this erotic office drama from writer-director Halina Reijn’s follow-up to last year’s horror favourite Bodies Bodies Bodies. Provocative and crackling with tension, Babygirl explores ideas of desire, control and illicit sexuality from a decidedly Gen Z perspective, while playing interesting games with established erotic thriller conventions.
Kidman plays Romy Mathis, the powerful CEO of a New York robotics company, who seemingly has it all, including two teenage daughters (Esther McGregor and Vaughan Reilly) and an apparently happy marriage to successful theatre director Jacob (Antonio Banderas). However, there are early hints that something is missing, because – in the opening scene – after faking an orgasm with Jacob, Romy sneaks off to a different room and masturbates to dodgy daddy porn on her laptop.

Olivia Colman once ruled the screen as Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown. Now? She’s trading Buckingham Palace for bear-sized mayhem—starring alongside the late monarch herself. Yep, the Queen (as in The Queen) makes a posthumous cameo in Paddington in Peru, and she’s in some star-studded company: Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, and Ben Whishaw all return for the ride.
But let’s talk about the real scene-stealer—Olivia Colman as The Reverend Mother, the film’s new baddie. And honestly? She’s the perfect dose of chaotic energy this sweet marmalade-slicked franchise didn’t know it needed.
Colman dives into villainy with the kind of delicious flair that makes you wish she’d been stirring up trouble from the very first jar of marmalade.

While the vampires in Sinners draw blood (and lots of it) from their victims, filmmaker Ryan Coogler has revealed that he drew something very different from an unlikely source when crafting his new action-horror movie. The director made a surprising revelation during a recent episode of Get Rec'dwith Straw Hat Goofy on YouTube, where he admitted that his vision of fear was hugely influenced by none other than DreamWorks Animation's Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, the 2022 sequel to the Shrek spin-off film Puss in Boots.
It wasn't the adorably big-eyed tabby cat at the center of the Puss in Boots franchise that caught Coogler's attention, but rather the menacing white wolf that reveals himself as Death. He explained how the animated movie's primary antagonist helped him to bring the vampires to life in Sinners, saying, "Think about the villain Death, think about his defining features [the eyes], think about his demeanor.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, 11am, Film4, Wednesday, April 9
Looking for some midweek anarchy? Then Bikini Bottom is definitely the right place. Its residents have always been cheerfully unhinged and Stephen Hillenburg's creations stepped up surprisingly well from television to film. This enjoyably surreal sequel carries on that fine tradition with a plot concerning the theft of the secret Krabby Patty recipe by a pirate but that's really just something to hang the general mayhem on as SpongeBob takes a slapstick swim through time and space and the jokes arrive in waves. If you get a hankering to soak up a bit more SpongeBob, the fifth spin-off film, Plankton: The Movie, was recently added to Netflix.

Glen Powell picked up CinemaCon’s Star of the Year award Thursday night, and he dedicated a piece of his acceptance speech to sharing a story about one of his early jobs when he was, well, not the movie star he is today.
The gig came courtesy of Robert Rodriguez’s 2003 franchise effort, Spy Kids 3: Game Over, and it marked Powell’s first film role. The part was so small that he’s listed on IMDb as “Long-fingered boy.” But something happened on set that Powell has never forgotten.

Spy Kids star Carla Gugino looks back on one major problem she had with her role in the film franchise. She played the kids' mother, Ingrid Cortez, alongside Antonio Banderas as their father.
Gugino told People that she felt too young to be the mother of two preteen children when filming Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids movie, which was released back in 2001. "I was 27 when I did that role, so I was way too young to play the part, because I was supposed to have been a spy for 10 years, and then I had two kids, who were like 9 and 11," she said.
She was given some wise advice by Antonio Banderas, with the seasoned action star telling her not to worry about her concerns too much. "Robert looked at me and was like, 'You do your job and no one will notice.'" Banderas' words of wisdom worked, and the...

The Action Scene explores the form, history, and visceral power of action cinema through its set pieces.Haywire.Violence erupts in a sleepy Upstate New York diner at the start of Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire (2011). Seated in the back, Mallory Kane (Gina Carano) is joined by her hungover, bleary-eyed associate Aaron (Channing Tatum), who has been sent to pick her up. She refuses to budge. As Aaron is served his coffee, the camera peers at them from a few yards away, peeking around the counter at knee height, like an eavesdropping waitress wiping up spilled food. He feigns a sip, then abruptly pitches the cup’s scalding contents at Mallory. She clutches her face in pain, but no reaction shot follows: the camera retains its distant vantage on the pair, off-center in the frame, as if it, too, hasn’t fully processed this jolting disruption of a banal scene.Aaron...

Antonio Banderas keeps his mouth shut, and his gun loaded in this divisive action thriller, which is now making some noise on free streaming. Released back in 2017, Acts of Vengeance evokes the best kind of action B-movie in this tale of a lawyer who doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut, vowing silence and revenge after his family is murdered.
Directed by Isaac Florentine, who is certainly no stranger to the genre, as demonstrated in his frequent collaborations with underrated action icon Scott Adkins in the likes of Ninja: Shadow of a Tear, Undisputed II: Last Man Standing, and Close Range, Acts of Vengeance stars The Boys’ Karl Urban, as well as Paz Vega and Cristina Serafini alongside Banderas. The action outing, which proved deeply divisive at the time, is now getting a second shot at success thanks to the free streaming platform, Tubi, where it currently stands #7 in the top 10.
