Four-time Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe is set to team up once more with Brazil’s Bárbara Paz in near-future drama, “Cuddle,” Paz’s fiction feature debut.
Dafoe was an associate producer of the documentary “Babenco: Tell Me When I Die” (2019), which Paz directed as an ode to her late husband, Argentine-Brazilian filmmaker Hector Babenco and which represented Brazil at the 93rd Academy Awards.
Dafoe’s ties to Paz and Babenco began with “My Hindu Friend,” Babenco’s semi-autobiographical 2015 swan song, in which Dafoe portrayed a dying filmmaker closely modeled after Babenco himself and Paz played a small but pivotal role.
In “Cuddle,” Dafoe plays Dante, a professional cuddler who offers platonic comfort to strangers craving connection. His clients range from the overwhelmed to the emotionally fragile, people searching for human touch in a world where affection has become rare and transactional. Behind his calm exterior, Dante struggles with a painkiller habit and a lonely existence,...

Last week, HBO announced that The Last of Us scene-stealer Kaitlyn Dever would be campaigning as a guest star, as opposed to a supporting actress, for the zombie apocalypse drama. That left an opening in Gold Derby's Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy odds that has since been filled by ... drumroll, please ... her costar Isabela Merced.
Dever plays Abby, a soldier who seeks revenge against Joel (Pedro Pascal) in Season 2 for the death of her father in Season 1. Since Dever has only appeared in two episodes (so far), she's eligible to compete as a guest star for The Last of Us because of the TV Academy's "less than 50 percent" ruling. The 28-year-old will also be on the Emmy ballot for Apple Cider Vinegar in Best Limited Series/Movie Actress.

The Emmy race for Best Drama Actor just received a shot of adrenaline.
For the first time since Gold Derby's 2025 Emmys predictions center opened in February, Noah Wyle is leading the odds in this topsy-turvy category. The Pitt star has overtaken Adam Scott (Severance), who has been in the No. 1 position since early March. Before that, Gary Oldman (Slow Horses) was the frontrunner.
Max's real-time hospital drama has been on a major upswing since its final episodes streamed in April. In one buzzed-about moment, Wyle's character, Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, had a mental breakdown after a concert shooting brought dozens of patients into his emergency room, including his quasi-stepson's new girlfriend. Wyle is a five-time Emmy nominee for ER (1995-99), but this would be his first win.
For Best Drama Series, The Pitt is now tied with The Last of Us in second place, both behind Severance. Taylor Dearden as...

ABC has picked up the drama pilot “Rj Decker,” based on Carl Hiaasen’s 1987 novel “Double Whammy.”
The one-hour pilot hails from writer and executive producer Rob Doherty, with Paul McGuigan attached to direct and executive produce. Hiaasen is also executive producing along with Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman of Timberman/Beverly Productions. 20th Television is the studio.
The official logline for the series states:
“Rj Decker, disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con, starts over as a private investigator in the colorful-if-crime-filled world of South Florida, tackling cases that range from slightly odd to outright bizarre with the help of his journalist ex, her police detective wife, and a shadowy new benefactor, a woman from his past who could be his greatest ally… or his one-way ticket back to prison.”
This marks the latest attempt to adapt a Hiaasen novel for television in recent years. Apple TV+ currently has the series...

Ben Stiller frequently engaged with Severance fans during the airing of the hit Apple TV+ show. The actor/director says that he found the interactions with the show’s fans “inspiring,” because he didn’t have the chance to do that growing up. Stiller has directed 11 episodes of the series and acts as the show's executive producer.
Season 2 of Severance earned a huge fan following, with people soon taking to social media to comment on theories, romantically pair together their favorite characters, and predict what they thought would happen in the season finale. Stiller was often seen liking and interacting with these fan posts, which were sometimes as fun to follow as watching the show itself.
During a Sxw panel the filmmaker said the huge critical and fandom reception is a testament to the show because audiences had so many options to choose from. “In this day and age, it...

Following the conclusion of “Severance” Season 2, Oscar-winning actress Patricia Arquette will portray Maggie Murdaugh in the upcoming Hulu series “Murdaugh Murders.” For Arquette, it’s a story that’s “always” been fascinating.
“To be married to someone who turns out to basically be a malignant narcissist is so interesting to me,” Arquette told Variety at the “Severance” Season 2 FYC event on Saturday in Los Angeles. “The way they have this kind of enchanted life together and how completely destroyed everything got. It was such a sad, rotten American tale.”
The series is based on the reporting of journalist Mandy Matney, creator of the “Murdaugh Murders” podcast, and will revolve around the powerful Murdaugh family that became accused of fraud and murder. Arquette’s character, Maggie Murdaugh, was found dead along with her son, Paul Murdaugh, in 2021. While playing a character like Maggie who is no longer alive proves a great challenge,...

The stars of the hit sci-fi thriller Severance reconvened Saturday night for a hilarious grilling by Conan O’Brien.
The Q&a, at Apple TV+’s FYC space at the Hollywood Athletic Club, started with a few mishaps, including a missing chair for O’Brien and a shortage of microphones, which left Ben Stiller, the show's executive producer and primary director, without an amplification device. “Really? You guys have to share a mic?” O’Brien asked with a trademark incredulity when Severance costar Tramell Tillman passed his microphone to Stiller. “It’s Apple! They make a billion dollars a second, and they had to find me a chair at the last minute, and you two are sharing a mic.” Over loud laughter from the crowd, Stiller joked, “They spent all the money on the rooms upstairs.” O’Brien nodded before quipping, “It’s the tariffs.”

The world of "Severance" might look similar to our own, but a closer peek at its technology adds layers to the show's central mystery. The most glaringly obvious example of this is the computers used by the Microdata Refinement (Mdr) team on the severed floor at Lumon Industries, which appear more retrofuturistic than dystopian. This might not make sense at first, as Lumon has mastered the ethically dubious, highly controversial severance procedure, highlighting the technological leaps that have already been achieved by this society. But the computers used to carry out the "mysterious and important" work at Lumon aren't sleek or ergonomic — they're nostalgic, almost surreal in design, with a bulky trackball lodged beside the dual-toned keyboard. The narrative themes of corporate hegemony and manipulation (which were partly inspired by "The Stanley Parable") can be gleaned solely from these designs, as these keyboards feature every button except Ctrl and Esc.

Netflix has a strong Emmy hand to play this TV awards season, positioning the seventh season of its flagship anthology series “Black Mirror” for a major awards run — and this time, the dystopian drama might be among its most formidable contenders yet.
Confirmed exclusively to Variety, the streamer is submitting three standout performances for lead acting honors in the limited or anthology series or TV movie categories: Paul Giamatti for the melancholic and moving “Eulogy,” and Chris O’Dowd and Rashida Jones for their resonant turns in the sociopolitical two-hander “Common People.” It’s a bold push that signals high hopes for a season already being hailed as a return to form — and possibly the series’ strongest outing since its Emmy-winning heyday.
Giamatti’s performance as Phillip, a solitary man navigating grief through digital means in “Eulogy,” has generated both tears and buzz. The 46-minute episode explores the ethics of AI-driven memorials,...

Variety has been given exclusive access to a first-look image for the film (below), which is currently in post-production.
“The Souffleur” sees Dafoe playing the tenured hotelier of Vienna’s InterContinental Hotel. An Emmy favorite has made a category decision that could have a huge impact on this year's awards. Gold Derby has exclusively learned that Allison Janney will submit as Best Drama Supporting Actress for the second season of The Diplomat. She is already a seven-time winner in acting categories at the Primetime Emmys, so an eighth win would tie her for the record with TV Hall of Fame inductees Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Janney joined the Netflix series for its second season, which began streaming on Oct. 31. She only appeared in two episodes as U.S. Vice President Grace Penn, giving her the option to submit either as a guest actress or supporting actress.
Her role in The Diplomat previously earned nominations for supporting actress at the 2025 Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. She was also nominated at the SAG Awards against costar Keri Russell despite the Screen Actors Guild...

Two of the stars of The Last of Us are on the rise this week in Gold Derby's Emmy predictions.
Pedro Pascal, whose beloved character Joel had a brutal run-in with a golf club in the second episode of Season 2, has jumped from fourth place to third place in Best Drama Actor. Meanwhile, series newcomer Isabela Merced, who plays the free-spirited zombie apocalypse survivor Dina, has ascended from ninth place to eighth place in Best Drama Supporting Actress. This would be Pascal's fourth career Emmy bid after receiving three in 2023 for The Last of Us, Saturday Night Live, and Patagonia; Merced is seeking her first nomination.
Series lead Bella Ramsey is still in second place in Best Drama Actress, behind only Kathy Bates (Matlock), who has claimed the No. 1 position since we began tracking the 2025 Emmys. Ramsey's defiant character Ellie must now learn how to survive without her father figure in her life.

Did Johnny Depp stand up for Patricia Arquette? (Photo Credit – Wikipedia)
The name Johnny Depp drips with drama almost as reliably as it does with box office gold. Every now and then, controversy seems to follow him like a shadow, long before and far beyond the chaos with Amber Heard.
Legal troubles have peppered his past as well, with flashes of aggression, scuffles with paparazzi and arrests that kept tabloids fed. As recently as January 2024, he faced new heat when Lola Glaudini claimed he verbally assaulted her while filming Blow, reigniting the question of who the real Depp is behind the makeup and movie magic.
Captain Jack with a Conscience
But for every sordid headline, there’s a softer counterpoint that scrambles the narrative. This same man who’s tangled with police and courts has also lent his voice, literally, to causes that reach far beyond the red carpet. In...

Apple TV’s Severance, starring Adam Scott, finished its second season in March 2025. The second season came three years after the first one, answering several questions and spawning many new theories. This sci-fi thriller show follows the employees of Lumon Industries as they sign up for an experiment to separate their personal and professional identities, dubbed “innies” and “outies,” respectively.
The characters on the show are quite layered, with their own share of secrets. One of these characters is Ms. Harmony Cobel, played by Patricia Arquette. The finale episode of Severance season 2, titled Cold Harbour, dropped a hint that Mark could be Ms Cobel’s son. So far on the show, we have seen the “innie” and “outie” versions of the characters; however, their families, especially Mark’s, have been a mystery.

It's often hard to nail down just which of Oscar-winner Martin Scorsese's films is his absolute best. Some say it's GoodFellas, whose stars are still keeping busy in Hollywood today. One of the supporting players, the late Louis Eppolito — aka "Fat Andy" — would go on to star in other films after a career in real-life law enforcement. And as it turns out, he was convicted for having actual ties to the mob, making his GoodFellas appearance all the more ironic. His wild story is the inspiration for Mob Cops, out now, and MovieWeb recently caught up with Jeremy Luke, the actor who portrays Eppolito in Lionsgate's new film.
Luke recalled a scene from Mob Cops where he found himself utterly channeling Eppolito's moment of on-screen glory from an entirely separate gangster movie. "I was in the Chinese restaurant, I go, 'How you doing?' And I grabbed the glass — because this character,...

Apple TV+’s science fiction psychological thriller Severance, which stars Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, and others, is rated as one of the most-watched and critically acclaimed shows. Fans had to wait almost two years for the second season of the show, but the wait was worth it. With just two seasons and an extraordinary storyline, direction, and performances, Severance has managed to garner a ravenous fan base.
The idea of individuals not carrying the burden of their work to the outside world and not thinking about the outside world while working is not only intriguing but also raises questions about labor, identity, and how corporate authorities tend to have control over their employees. The new, gender-flipped Disney+ series version of Holes has just announced its cast and some character details. It's shaping up to look very different indeed from the 2003 adaption of the famous book by Louis Sachar.
First off, Shay Rudolph of The Baby-Sitters Club will be playing the main character, who is no longer a boy named Stanley but a girl named Hayley.Deadline has the details on her: she will be "full of heart and tired of her family’s belief that fate is fixed; her arrival will inject new hope and optimism into her campmates."
Greg Kinnear will play The Warden, a gender-flipped version of the sinister character played by Sigourney Weaver in the original movie. He has what seems like a good reason for having delinquent girls come out to Camp Yucca (Camp Green Lake in the original) to dig holes, but he has a dark secret. Aidy Bryant will play Sissy,...

Disney+ has set the main cast for the pilot of the “Holes” TV series adaptation, Variety has learned.
The project, which Variety exclusively reported on in January, will star: Greg Kinnear, Aidy Bryant, Shay Rudolph, Flor Delis Alicea (“Love the Skin You’re In”), Anire Kim Amoda, Noah Cottrell, Iesha Daniels and Sophie Dieterlen in their television debuts, Alexandra Doke, and Maeve Press.
Full character descriptions can be found below.
Unlike the book “Holes,” the show will feature a female protagonist and mostly female characters, whereas the book followed teenager Stanley Yelnats as he is sent to a juvenile detention camp for boys in Texas.
The official logline for the show states, “In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl (Rudolph) is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden (Kinnear) forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.”
Disney Branded Television is behind the pilot.

Exclusive: Peter Berg’s next film looks to be in a full-on sprint towards production as sources tell Deadline that Ray Nicholson and Tom Francis are set to star in the director’s next film The Mosquito Bowl for Netflix. They join Nicholas Galitzine and Bill Skarsgård in the pic, which falls under Berg’s deal with the studio that he recently reupped.
Based on Buzz Bissinger’s New York Times bestseller The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II, the film is set after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when four of America’s top college football stars set their fame aside to enlist in the Marines. As they prepare for the brutal invasion of Okinawa, they play in a legendary game featuring some of the greatest players in history – a game that, for many, will be the last they ever play.

Noah Emmerich (The Big Cigar), Kathleen Wilhoite (Yellowstone) and Tommy Dewey (Saturday Night) have joined Hulu’s upcoming limited series about the Murdaugh Murders. The true crime drama series comes from showrunner Michael D. Fuller, who co-created the project with Erin Lee Carr.
The as-yet untitled series is based on the true story of Maggie and Alex Murdaugh’s “stranger-than-fiction family drama”, drawn from reporting by journalist Mandy Matney, creator of the Murdaugh Murders Podcast, and insider knowledge from years spent following the case.
Emmerich will play Randy Murdaugh. Strait-laced and by the book, he is the antithesis to his wild card younger brother Alex in life and in the legal profession. Their wildly different approaches have led to a lifetime of locking horns as they jockey for their father Randolph’s affection and approval.
Wilhoite portrays Gloria Satterfield. The Murdaughs’ loyal and doting housekeeper for decades, Gloria helped raise Buster and Paul from infancy.

Severancefans wondering what it would be like to be a macrodata refiner at the mysterious and important Lumon Industries may have just gotten one step closer. Per CNET,a company is making a replica keyboard just like Mark S., Helly R., Irving B., and Dylan G. used in the macrodata refinement department on Lumon’s severed floor.
Atomic Keyboard has replicated the macrodata department’s blue keyboard with no detail unnoticed. For now, those interested in purchasing the keyboard can sign up for preorder alerts on the Atomic Keyboard website. Although not yet available to purchase, the keyboard was originally set to cost $399, but due to tariffs, the price is not yet confirmed.
Per the description on Atomic Keyboard’s website, the keyboard is one “both your innie and outie will enjoy,” referring to the severed nature of Lumon’s macrodata refiners, who underwent a procedure to separate their work and home lives.

Just days after The Pitt's first season hung up its stethoscope, Noah Wyle's Emmy odds continue to rise.
The Best Actor contender, who plays Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, received rave reviews for the storyline in which he had a mental breakdown after losing yet another patient while working an all-day shift. One month ago, Wyle ranked in fifth place to win Best Drama Actor among the Gold Derby odds, but buoyed by positive word-of-mouth for his performance on The Pitt, he's now in the No. 2 position to claim his first career statuette. He previously received five supporting Emmy bids for ER (1995-99).
The only person standing in Wyle's way, according to the Gold Derby predictions, is Severance star Adam Scott. Lest we forget, Scott also received a goat-load of kudos following the finale of his show, particularly for the scene in which the "innie" and "outie" versions of his character,...

One of the greatest television spin-offs ever, which has since become the de facto flagship series for the "Law & Order" franchise, is "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." Commonly referred to simply as "Svu," the show focuses on police detectives investigating especially heinous crimes in and around New York City. Given the nature of their law enforcement specialization, the characters in "Svu" often face darker, more sexually oriented crimes than the other "Law & Order" shows. The series has gone on to become one of the longest-running scripted primetime television shows of all time, eventually exceeding its predecessor.
Running since 1999, "Svu" is an American television institution, and it has earned that distinction through excellently crafted characters and cases. Whether it's the fan-favorite duo of Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) and Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) or newer generations of detectives, "Svu" has maintained a steadily impressive level of quality. Of all the wild twists in the Severance Season 2 finale, the incredible marching band performance conducted by Mr. Milchick (Tramell Tillman) has emerged as a definite highlight. It has been the subject of countless fan edits, gifs, and memes, and is also beloved by the Apple TV+ show’s cast. Both Tillman and his costar Britt Lower told Gold Derby it was their favorite finale moment on the red carpet ahead of the Severance For Your Consideration event and panel at New Jersey’s Bell Works complex on Saturday. Moderator Stephen Colbert also expressed admiration toward the marching band sequence, while noting its "fascistic" undertones.
“It’s funny bc we weren’t specifically looking for a musical performance, because we’d had a fairly memorable music/dance scene in the first season, and we weren’t actively trying to go and replicate that,” Severance creator Dan Erickson said during the panel.

Witchboard is a reimagining of the 1986 film of the same name, but it will feature an entirely new cast. In addition to Bower, Madison Iseman, Aaron Dominguez, Melanie Jarnson, Charlie Tahan, and Antonia Desplat will also star in the film, which was written by Chuck Russell and Greg McKay, with Russell directing. Arguably the most talked-about moment (that didn't involve a death or tainted coconut milk) from Sunday's The White Lotus finale was when Carrie Coon's Laurie delivered her "I have no belief system" monologue to Kate (Leslie Bibb) and Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan) on their final night in Thailand. The awards buzz immediately started on social media, with fans suggesting it was a "give me that Emmy" type of speech. Take a look:

Two weeks after the Severance Season 2 finale first hit Apple TV+, the cast, crew, and fans all got to take a victory lap at a special event at New Jersey’s Bell Works office park. The building complex, which has served as a stand-in for Lumon’s main office building and first floor on the show, was filled with hundreds of Severance fans, cast members, and award voters on Saturday. The entire complex was decked out in Lumon-style decor, from “missing” posters for Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman) to recreations of the “Mammalians Nurturable” and “Macro-Data Refinement” workspaces. Actors walked around dressed like Lumon employees, and talked like them too. Guest star Gwendoline Christine even dressed as her character, Lorne, and participated in the performance art (see a photo below).

The work the macrodata refiners do on the severed floor in the Apple TV+ series Severancemay be mysterious and important, but the vehicles the characters drive also fall into that category. In the series, technology plays a huge role, specifically in the development of a procedure called severance that enables a person to split their work lives and home lives by placing a chip into their brain. Characters are also seen using smartphones, but notably, they drive cars that are decades old.
In an interview with BuzzFeed, Severance creator and showrunner Dan Erickson answered the question of why characters like Mark (Adam Scott), Harmony (Patricia Arquette), and Irving (John Turturro) drive such retro cars. For instance, Harmony drives a white Volkswagen Rabbit, which could be a reference to Alice in Wonderland, in addition to being a car from the 1980s. In Season 2 of the Apple TV+ hit series Severance, viewers were able to get more of an in-depth look at the world outside of the severed floor of Lumon. The show follows a group of macrodata refiners who have had a procedure to separate their brain into two halves - an “innie” who goes to work at Lumon and an “outie” for their outside selves.
Season 2 brought with it more glimpses of the outside world, including the town of Kier, P.E., which Lumon built for its workers, and the town of Salt’s Neck, where Harmony Cobel (Patricia Arquette) grew up and learned the ways of Kier. The second season also brought with it inspiration from another mind-blowing series, David Lynch’s Twin Peaks (1990-1991).

Severancefans were left with a nearly three-year gap between the April 8, 2022, Season 1 finale and the premiere of the Apple TV+ show’s second season this January. With the Season 2 finale having premiered on March 21, and the show officially renewed for a third season, Severance creator and showrunner Dan Erickson hopes it won’t take as long to create the third installment of the dystopian sci-fi thriller.
The critically acclaimed Severance follows the lives of workers at a mysterious company called Lumon, whose “innies” and “outies” have different personalities and identities, keeping their work lives and personal lives separated.
While there is no release date for the third season, given that the show was just renewed, Erickson told Entertainment Weekly he hopes Season 3 comes sooner than the three years it took for the second season. “I would love to finish the show before I’m 70,” Erickson said. For reference, Erickson is 41 years old.

One Severance star has opened up about her thoughts on the critically acclaimed Season 2 finale. Dan Erickson and Ben Stiller threw audiences for a loop when Mark (Adam Scott) ultimately chooses to stay at Lumon with Helly (Britt Lower) instead of leaving with Gemma (Dichen Lachman). This choice was made despite Mark working all season to break Gemma out of Lumon. However, his innie couldn’t contain his love for Helly. During a recent interview with Dazed to speak about the Season 2 finale, Lachman pulled back the curtain on her relationship with Mark, and even though he ultimately decided to stay with Helly, she still believes the two have a familiarity despite the severance barrier keeping them from fully knowing each other:
“I think in all of the iterations of Gemma’s innies, in their subconscious, they know each other. It’s why Mark makes the tree in season one.

The Ugly Stepsister, the first horror feature from Emilie Blichfeldt, is set to arrive in theaters on April 18, and the film just got an exciting new look. Collider is thrilled to partner with distributors IFC Films and Shudder to help promote its upcoming premiere by releasing a new poster for the film showing what appears to be a ballet shoe dipped in blood stepping carefully onto the carpet. The upcoming film will see Blichfeldt make her directorial debut after starring in other projects such as Nr. 24 (Sjur Vatne Brean) and Kruppel 16 (Johannes Blumenthal). The Ugly Stepsister is billed as a gorgeously crafted, twisted take on the classic Cinderella story, and it earned strong reviews out of Sundance earlier this year, including from Collider’s own Therese Lacson, who scored the film an 8/10 in her review.

With its macabre one-liners, revolving door of guest stars, and endless imagined homicides, "CSI" is one of the most recognizable network TV franchises of all time. Yet, despite well over a decade of success and extensive rerun appeal, the Anthony Zuiker-created property actually went off the air for a five year period. In 2016, the last "CSI" show that was still going, "CSI: Cyber," bowed out after just two seasons, and the TV world of the crime saga that began at the turn of the millennium went temporarily dark.
Like so many procedurals before it, "CSI" did eventually come back, offering up the Paula Newsome and Matt Lauria-led "CSI: Vegas" in 2021. That series returned to the show's trend of focusing on a different city (past hits have included "CSI: New York" and the infamously punny "CSI: Miami"), but it wasn't enough to save it. "Vegas" was canceled in 2024 after three seasons,...
