- DirectorRobert A. EndelsonStarsRobert JuddCatherine PeppersLela SmallA mean trashy exploitation picture about three convicts who escape from jail and hole up at the house of a black minister. There are a few nasty scenes where the minister's family is being repeatedly terrorized by the thugs. In the end the minister turns the tables on the 3 convicts and gives them their just desserts.A powerful film on race. Simultaneously the greatest blaxploitation and home invasion film ever made and featuring great characters, great performances and a solid, righteously angry script with sharp socio-political commentary. No film i've seen has executed exploitation better in both expectation and untapped brilliance.
- DirectorDuke MitchellStarsDuke MitchellLorenzo DardadoJim LoBiancoFamed nightclub performer Duke Mitchell is Paul, a paroled gangster with an unholy scheme: to kidnap the Pope and 'charge a dollar from every Catholic in the world' as the ransom. Shot in 1975, GONE WITH THE POPE was unfinished at the time of Duke Mitchell's death in 1981, and finally completed in 2009 from a rediscovered, unfinished print.Everything Like Father, Like Son is, but 5x better. Featuring some of the most funniest, emotional, insane scenes i've ever seen in a film (and some that are really ill-conceived), Gone With the Pope is a Haley's Comet in that it is true exploitation that transcends itself into true art.
- DirectorDuke MitchellStarsDuke MitchellVic CaesarLorenzo DardadoThe ruthless son of a Mafia kingpin blasts his way through Hollywood on a bloody crime spree.Mitchell is a man in a million. This film is not only responsible for the greatest trailer ever made, it is a bats**t, melancholic, excessively violent retort to The Godfather that bedazzles with it's tightrope act of megalomaniac ego and psychotronic majesty. One the most personal and successful vanity projects in cinema.
- DirectorLucio FulciStarsCatriona MacCollDavid WarbeckCinzia MonrealeA young woman inherits an old hotel in Louisiana where, following a series of supernatural "accidents", she learns that the building was built over one of the entrances to Hell.On the level of Eraserhead (and packs way more of a punch), The Beyond encapsulates everything great about Italian horror from the mood to the psychosis to the gothic dread. the apocalypse is very much strong in this one. The film to make me see the true value in Italian cinema and i've never looked back.
- DirectorAbel FerraraStarsZoë LundBogeyAlbert SinkysA timid and mute seamstress goes insane after being attacked and raped twice in one day, in which she takes to the streets of New York City after dark and randomly shoots men with a .45 caliber pistol.Probably the best feminist text by a male exploitation (at the time) director. It's one thing to address the problems women faced and still face, it's another thing to show it, solve it with violence, then lament on it's shallow, facile nature whilst never divulging into mansplaining. Whether Lund's character (powerful performance) is in the right or not is left an open question. One which there is still not a clear answer to. Ms .45 is how you do gender politics in film.
- DirectorTinto BrassStarsMalcolm McDowellPeter O'TooleHelen MirrenA dramatization of the ascent to Caesar and subsequent reign of Caligula, one of the most notorious leaders of ancient Rome. We see his ambition, his scheming, his perversion and decadence, his brutality and his lunacy.Never before, Never again!
Couldn't even watch it full the first time round as it was so alienating. However, give two or three viewings, this film conducts a unique spell. One of THE fascinating anomalies of cinema, this sadly failed attempt to launch a new 80's era of porno chic is a sprawling, tedious, impactful *beep* of ego, excess and egg whites.
A film i was endlessly fascinated with throughout college for its individuality, it's ambition alone is worth the price of admission. Good performances, great violence and some ok hardcore. Shame about the soul crushing pace tho. - DirectorLucio FulciStarsTisa FarrowIan McCullochRichard JohnsonStrangers searching for a young woman's missing father arrive at a tropical island where a doctor desperately seeks the cause and cure of a recent epidemic of the undead. Most favourite trash zombie movie. Bleak, cynical and gory. The locations are awesome and there are just too many iconic moments to count. One of the greatest Italian horror movies ever made.
- DirectorRobert HoustonKenji MisumiStarsTomisaburô WakayamaKayo MatsuoMinoru ÔkiWhen the wife of the Shogun's Decapitator is murdered and he is ordered to commit suicide by the paranoid Shogun, he and his four-year-old son escape and become assassins for hire, embarking on a journey of blood and violent death. The best Americanisation of any Japanese media. The feel of a fairy tale, fantastic violence, great compilation editing. What you wished every Godfrey Ho movie was.
- DirectorGiulio BerrutiStarsAnita EkbergAlida ValliMassimo SeratoLegendary Swedish sex bomb Anita Ekberg stars as Sister Gertrude, a cruel nun who discovers depraved pleasure in a frenzy of drug addiction, sexual degradation and sadistic murder. So much love for this film. Ekberg gives the performance of her career, sympathetic as well as psychotic. You'd never think you could feel so much for a morphine addict, but she makes it like she's related to you. Just wonderful.
The music is fantastic, the mood is sardonic and brooding and the flesh on display, lacerated or not, is most succulent. I can not recommend this one highly enough - DirectorLucio FulciStarsJack HedleyAlmanta SuskaHoward RossA burned-out New York police detective teams up with a college psychoanalyst to track down a vicious serial killer randomly stalking and killing various young women around the city.Heavyweight Psycho-sexual thriller in which Fulci manages to be really transgressive, yet completely in control, a balance i have not seen in any other movie.
- DirectorLucio FulciStarsLucio FulciBrett HalseyRia De SimoneA horror film director is stalked by a mad psychiatrist/serial killer bent on killing people to model the killings after the director's gory death scenes from his movies.Fulci's most personal film and a manifesto upon the desire to use genre to realise personal visions, and the many pitfalls and triumphs of that pursuit.
- DirectorWilliam LustigStarsJoe SpinellCaroline MunroAbigail ClaytonA psychopathic man goes on a killing and mutilation spree in New York City. Some of Savini's best gore and Lustig creates an atmosphere of urban decay that you can smell. If this film was a taste, it would be rusted sheet metal.
- DirectorDanny SteinmannTom DeSimoneStarsLinda BlairJohn VernonRobert DryerA teenage vigilante seeks revenge on a group of violent thugs who raped her handicapped sister and killed her best friend. One of the best exploitation films ever made. Great characters, story, style, everything. Lightning in a bottle as it serves both as a time capsule and as entertainment.
- DirectorNgai Choi LamStarsSiu-Wong FanMei Sheng FanKa-Kui HoRiki-Oh, a young man who has superhuman strength, is incarcerated in a private prison, where inmates are treated like slaves. He is forced to use his unstoppable form of martial arts to destroy the corrupt officials and their lackeys.Great manga action. One of the best adaptions ever.
- DirectorBuddy GiovinazzoStarsRick GiovinazzoVeronica StorkMitch MaglioA dangerously disturbed Vietnam veteran struggles with life 15 years after his return home, and slowly falls into insanity from his gritty urban lifestyle. One of the all time great nihilism films and one of most depressing films ever made in the state of New York. Triumph!
- DirectorRuggero DeodatoStarsDavid HessAnnie BelleChristian BorromeoTwo low-life punks invite themselves to a party at a posh villa and after being taunted by their snobbish hosts, hold everyone hostage and subject them to various forms of torture and mayhem.A spiteful attack against the rich and feckless. Though it's not without very suspect elements, DEODATO'S BEST FILM is one of the greatest home invasion thrillers ever made with unrivalled atmosphere, tension and most importantly, empathy for it's characters, no matter how vile they are. In your face as well as your house. Unmissable.
- DirectorBruno MatteiGilbert RousselStarsLaura GemserGabriele TintiUrsula FloresFour escaped male convicts seize control of a women's prison and proceed to terrorize the inmates, one of whom is reporter Emanuelle, incarcerated on trumped-up charges.Mattei and Fragasso's best effort. There, i made a much painful decision and am sticking with it. The acting and script and S&V is all here, but there is also suspense as well. A genuinely tense and engaging film.
- DirectorBruno MatteiClaudio FragassoStarsMargie NewtonFranco GarofaloSelan KarayAfter an experiment gone wrong, a virus that turns people into zombies spreads throughout New Guinea. A female reporter and her cameraman, and a team of four commandos sent to investigate try to survive the onslaught. The music's stolen, the acting is incredible, the script is Fragasso's best (MAYBE), the gore is amateur and if you have not seen this already and are at this point in the list, wanna DM?
- DirectorJohn GrissmerStarsLouise LasserMark SoperJulie GordonA boy kills a man and accuses his twin brother of the murder, and the innocent brother ends up institutionalized, while his psychotic twin goes free. 10 years later, the innocent twin escapes, which triggers his brother into killing again. My favourite slasher still and the one that got me seriously into the genre. You think slasher films like this only existed in Adult Swim cartoons, but here it is. It is a pipe dream of mine to make a film as car crash reckless yet relentlessly entertaining as John Grissmer and co's seen to be believed effort.
- DirectorPaul MorrisseyAntonio MargheritiStarsJoe DallesandroUdo KierDalila Di LazzaroBaron Frankenstein creates two "zombies" - one male, one female - planning to mate them in order to create a master race.Oh what a gloriously artful satire of grindhouse schlock this is and makes Hammer's output look more like museum pieces in comparison. A fine example of modernist filmmaking with all the madness occurring not losing its appeal due to the fact that you get the feeling that it all has a point. Gore, sex, comedy, atrocious accents, worse foley and yet its all so fun. Udo Kier's a boss in this, even if vowels are an alien concept to him. Everyone else gives complete deadpan performances throughout which i am extremely grateful for as i am a man of kitsch more than camp concerning my acting and besides there is enough visual oddity going on that anything else would be too OTT.
Pop art at its finest - DirectorRobert Hartford-DavisStarsAnn ToddPatrick MageeTony BeckleyA religious sect called the Brethren has taken control of widow Birdy, sending her unstable son, Kenny, into a spiraling descent into madness. No woman is safe when Kenny's religious mania overpowers him and leads to murder and chaos.Britsploitation insanity. Fist fights, psycho baptists corrupted by those Americans, incestuous overtones, mad soundtrack.
- DirectorJulian GilbeyStarsRicci HarnettTerry StoneCraig FairbrassThe life of career criminal Carlton Leach. One of the best British gangster films, if not gangster films period of the past decade. For a number of years, nothing in it's niche had come close to rivalling its impact. It also deftly blends American and British crime film sensibilities, creating a unique feel of class and crass, gloss and gratuitous. Even better in it's director's cut, it's a film that always keeps me on my toes.
- DirectorLiam GalvinStarsYvette RowlandRobin ReidJoe EganA woman is forced into a deadly game in which she has to kill five people or all her friends and family will be butchered. An all time great Britsploitation classic. And who said the British Film Industry was dead. All of you are looking pretty bloody stupid to the fifty of us right now. The most entertaining British genre film of the last twenty years, and then some.
- DirectorMarino GirolamiStarsIan McCullochAlexandra Delli ColliSherry BuchananAn expedition in the East Indies, encounters not only the cannibals they were looking for, but also an evil scientist and his zombie army.Great Italian zombie film. They're all great, but this one especially for welcome amounts of nudity and gore.
- DirectorJason EisenerStarsRutger HauerPasha EbrahimiRobb WellsA homeless vigilante blows away crooked cops, pedophile Santas, and other scumbags with his trusty pump-action shotgun. The only good Neo-Grindhouse film. A true storm in a cup that features a modern edge and unobtrusive retro aesthetic.
