Screening Salon / Saloon Part II Candidates
The late David Kleiler screened 201 films at his living-room "Screening Salon / Saloon," co-hosted by Jean-Paul Ouellette. This is a list of all the other films that were officially considered for future screenings, plus a few that got David's verbal approval.
They're divided into four groups. After the main listing are a group of 19 longer films that will be shown on Sundays in the colder months. There are then some films that are on the back burner because of recent screenings, and finally there are the films we've already done.
We've added (in the notes below the films) some extra information, largely about the film's critical reception. We've noted every film that is ranked in the top 2000 all-time according to the consensus of film critics, scholars and directors as compiled by They Shoot Pictures, Don't They. For films from the 21st century, we give their rank in TSP's separate top 1000 list, and the Rotten Tomatoes Average Rating (a more accurate score than Metacritic). For films from 1996 on, we cite the rank of the film in its year for mentions on year-end Top 10 lists, according to the annual top 50 compiled at Critic's Top 10. (And if you didn't already know about those two websites, we apologize for the free time you will be wasting!) The differences between the set of assessments can be very informative, as the RT score reflects the average critical response while the other data shows the film's passionate support.
