- Eric and Elin meet as adults and reminisce about when they met for the first time. Their parents were addicts but for a couple of months they lived together as a family. This time together still defines who they are and what they became.

- An elderly couple, the Lovgrens, are murdered at their isolated farmstead and Mrs. Lovgren's last word to Wallander seems to be "Foreigners." When this is leaked to the press a migrant labourers' camp is torched and a foreign worker shot by anonymous right wing vigilantes. Daughter Linda, dating a Syrian doctor, accuses Wallander of racism and, although Lovgren's brother-in-law tells the police that the dead man had a hidden fortune, which his murderers stole, and an illegitimate son, neither fact is immediately helpful. However, Wallander's obsessive pursuit of the owner of a car used in the revenge killing yields a result, though it almost costs him his job and the Lovgrens' slayers are finally cornered in a fairground.
- Lawyer Sten Torstenssen tells Wallander he believes his old father's death in a car crash was homicide but Wallander is reluctant to act until Sten is found hanged and the pathologist claims that he was murdered. Sten's secretary shows Wallander a postcard of Africa with a text threatening the lives of father and son and wealthy philanthropist Harderberg, a client of Sten's, admits to also having received one. All were posted from the same hotel, apparently by industrialist Jurgen Nordfeldt, who survives an attempt to kill him. Nordfeldt had stumbled on a racket importing body parts from Africa which Wallander, helped by ex-cop Anders, now Harderberg's security guard, must resolve.
- Three elderly men, Holger Eriksson, Gosta Runfeldt and Eugen Blomberg, are murdered in seemingly unrelated incidents. The smell of perfume on Runfeldt's suitcase suggests a woman's involvement. None are mourned by their families, who regarded them as bullies and womanizers, which shocks Wallander, whose own father has just died. A dedication in a book by Eriksson to a woman called Krista leads to the members of a former self-help group for abused women, attended by Vanja, Runfeldt's ex-lover. Is one of these women the killer?
- A tanker is heading towards the bridge. When it is boarded by the coastguard the crew are discovered to be missing. The only people on board are five youths, drugged and chained. Saga and Martin are assigned to investigate the case.
- Four individuals wearing animal masks post a video online claiming responsibility for the tanker Saga and Martin are investigating. Deaths are reported of people eating poisoned food. Are the cases connected?
- Saga and Martin continue their hunt for the eco-terrorists, who have realised the police are on their trail.
- The hunt is on for the leader of the eco-terrorists, with Saga and Martin hoping to stop any further attacks from happening.
- As the investigation moves forward a new group of four, animal head wearing, eco-terrorists post a video online. Saga is having some relationship "issues".
- A sunken boat containing skeletal remains is found, that appears to be related to the eco-terrorist case. Martin's son is taken into hospital in a serious condition.
- A chemical plant is attacked which threatens to contaminate a water source. Saga realises living with a partner is harder than she thought. Martin looks into Saga's past.
- Martin visits Jens in prison and seems to be getting to him. As they re-interview witnesses Saga suspects a statement has been tampered with. Laura regains consciousness and remembers what her assailant looks like.
- Saga and Martin have a sketch of the suspect, but can they get there in time to avert 'The Graduation'? Their friendship is placed under strain by Martin's inquiry into Saga's past.
- It becomes apparent that the case isn't over and Saga and Martin race to prevent another terrorist attack. Saga faces a decision that may destroy her friendship with Martin.
- When a well-known gender theorist, and owner of Copenhagen's first gender-neutral preschool, is found murdered at a construction site in Malmö, Saga has to cooperate with a new Danish colleague, Hanne, who has difficulty accepting Saga.
- Saga gets a new Danish colleague, Henrik Sabroe, and together they continue to investigate Helle Anker's murder.
- The police receive a video demanding a ransom in exchange for Hans' release. They manage to locate him, but when they are about to free him, they find that his kidnapper has been shot and Hans has been abducted again.
- Hans is still in a coma. Saga makes a mistake in a dramatic hostage situation, but they manage to arrest a suspect who is taken in for questioning.
- Lillian discovers a wound in Hans' mouth, which turns out to be a branding mark. The other two victims are examined again and they also have the same kind of branding mark. The perpetrator is probably branding his victims, but for what?
- Saga and Henrik see a connection between the victims and some artwork hanging in a museum. All of the artwork is owned by Freddie Holst, a well-known and successful Danish business man.
- An older couple is found murdered in a spectacular fashion in their house outside Ystad. They have a connection to a piece of art and they both have branding marks in their mouths, just like the previous victims.

- The hunt for the perpetrator and Freddie's newborn baby continues.
